I am on Jacob and Carolina's oldest son Jacobs line. Jacob jr and his wife Susanna moved to Kansas before 1880 and their parent followed in 1883. I believe the picture is of Jacob and Susannas children Joseph( b. 1875) and Rose (b. 1878).

I currently live in Germany and all my research on Jacob and Carolina and the earlier Schucks is very accurate. Originally I had help from a German historian who had included the Schucks in a book she wrote. Since then I have collaborated with several other Schuck relatives to discover as much information as I can.

Laura

Obituary? Anyway it's pretty clear our genes meet at Jacob and Carolina. My path follows Margretha.I've attached an excerpt from a family history that was written in the 60s by a granddaughter of Margretha. This is my current work. I'm trying to find evidence to support this story. I just can't find when they went to Newton. It wasn't until after 1884 (the birth yr of their youngest in OH). I called Newton Historical Society today. they may have some good stuff. I want to get my ducks in a row before I call the back after the holidays.

My interest in Joseph has to do with a picture I have (2nd file). Written on the back is "Rose and Joseph Schuck 1898". The hand writting is no one I know and somewhat faded. May be as old as the picture. I don't see where they would fit.

If you have any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. This is one of those things that get under your skin until you've followed every lead.

Jamie
In Jacobs obituary his wifes maiden name is given as Allas. I have the marriage record of Jacob Mathias and Carolina Alles attached to my ancestry file. I got this from the archives in Speyer. There are many census records showing the family, including both Margaretha and Joseph. Joseph was mentioned as a surviving child in his fathers obituary (1903), Margaretha (Zender) had already died.

There is also a different Jacob Schuck living nearby married to a Catharine. They have similar named cildren. I havent been able to find out if they are related.

Schuck was born March 3, 1917, in Greensburg, and passed away Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, in Fresno, Calif. She was the daughter of late Joseph Harris Schuck and Mary Anne Johnson Schuck. Margaret was a woman of her time and was an assistant manager of Murphy Co. at a time when women did not hold these kinds of positions. She retired after 41 years of service in 1982. Margaret was a former resident, as well as president and kitchen manager of Hempfield Towers in Greensburg. She was a member of First Reformed United Church of Christ in Greensburg for more than 40 years. Margaret loved attending church and taught Sunday school for many years. After the death of her nephew, Charles "Bubby" Mino, she moved to Fresno, Calif., to live with her niece, Gail Anne Mino Gaston. She enjoyed being with family and devoted her life to family, friends and helping others. Margaret would have never hesitated to give if she had it to give. She truly lived by the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."

I had sent this to an email account, but in case you did not receive it, I am reposting it here.

I thought you might be interested in what I have found about David Schuck’s desertion. It may also bear on David Schmitt.

I received copies of David Schuck’s service records. On 11 February 1862 he was promoted to Corporal by Special Order of Colonel Edward W. Serrell, the commander of the 1 NY Engineers. In the March and April muster records he was listed as demoted and confined. It says he was “illegally promoted”, whatever that means. My guess is the demotion, with no apparent fault of his, may have embittered him.

The July and August muster show him as confined at Key West for mutiny. The November and December muster shows that he deserted from Key West in Nov 1862. Subsequent musters continue to report him as deserted from Key West. The final muster, June 1865 shows him as mustered out at Richmond, Va, on June 30, 1865. It was confusing to see how he could have both deserted and been mustered out.

As much of an explanation as possible comes from “General Orders of the War Department, Embracing the Years 1861, 1862 & 1863”, Vol 2, Pages 117 – 120, and available from Google Books. There was indeed a mutiny, lead by Adolph Schramm. It named a few other probable ringleaders of the mutiny, as well as referring to “other members of his Company and Regiment”, though no Schucks were explicitly mentioned. Schramm was convicted and sentenced to be shot. Where it gets interesting is that Major General Hunter called for mercy, “Attention is respectfully called to the accompanying copy of a recommendation to mercy signed by the members of the Court. From a very full knowledge of all the facts in this case, I regard the Colonel of this Regiment (Colonel E. W. Serrell) as mainly responsible for all the repeated offences of mutiny and insubordination of which the men have been guilty.”

It looks like our ancestors served under an incompetent commanding officer, whose incompetence goaded them into joining a mutiny, but probably not playing key roles. If David Schmitt received a pension, it is likely because he served out his term or finished out as an active soldier and did not escape from Key West as did David Schuck. Since David Schuck already had three young children at home, he may have been motivated to escape to go back to provide for his family. The last muster, showing him mustered out, may show forgiveness, as recommended by General Hunter.

If you have any pictures of David’s sisters you would like to share, I would love to have them, especially because I have none of David.
In writing my books on the Page Family, back in the 60's, my brother did some research on the Schuck Family as my mother was Kathryn Marie Schuck, daughter of Peter Schuck, son of Wendel Schuck and Kathryn Seehi. My mother was born in Lincoln Co, NE, in 1901. My Page book contains several sheets on the Schuck Family. I would be glad to email the data to anyone who wants to develop a family tree on this family. Maybe somebody out there has already done so, I would be glad to exchange material with them. Contact me at donpage@digital.net.

Sorry I took so long to reply. Henrietta Schuck Clark was my maternal grandmother. I would love to have a copy of what information you have. She did marry Birley Austin Clark, date unknown, but my mother was born 12/9/1912 in Los Angeles. My grandmother later divorced him as he was considered quite the 'ladies man'. We have no pictures of him but he was said to look a lot like Clark Gable. He later remarried which also end in divorce. I have more information I am willing to share.

I have a scanned copy of many baptismal records from St. Joseph's including one for Henrietta born Dec. 17, 1876 to John Schuck and Mary Schneider. Baptism Dec. 20, 1876 with sponsors Wendel and Henrietta Schuck. She is a distant relative of my wife. I believe she married a Birley Austin Clark. Most of the information I have on her can be found on my genealogy site - a link to her specific record is http://www.thehalperts.com/genealogy/Default/PersPage_1409.h...

Yes indeed, David Schmitt WAS in the same unit as David Schuck. He was listed as an artificer as well. That unit, from the names I have seen in my GGGrandfather's pension file, must have been comprised of quite a number of German immigrants.David Schmitt also had a questionable "desertion" listed in his file...although it is uncertain if he was ill/injured and undergoing medical care at the time or what happened. He was subsequently discharged in 1864. Very intersting information, thanks for sharing, and for the additional links!

Hello Kathy,

I have unearthed more facts about David Schuck since my posting.

David enlisted in the 1st NY Engineers Regiment on 14 Sept 1861 at age 32 and left the army on 27 November 1862 from Key West, Florida. He was an “artificer” in that unit, which matches his census occupation of blacksmith. Perhaps your great great grandfather was in the same unit. For information on that unit please see http://www.dmna.state.ny.us/historic/reghist/civil/other/1st....

If you are an Ancestry.com member you can look up the two conflicting reports of his leaving the army:

Listed as David Schoech (the German pronunciation would be nearly indistinguishable to us) he is listed as a deserter. A source record says “also borne as David Schuck”. Please see: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv=1&rank=...

Listed as David Schuck, he is listed as mustered out. Please see: http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?rank=1&gsfn=D...

At the time of his military service, he already had three children, so perhaps there was some sort of hardship discharge. On the other hand, I haven’t found any pension reference for him. His military records should clear things up. Another child was born in August 1863 in Manhattan, so he must have returned directly from Key West.

The 1860 census shows David and family in Manhattan in the 5th District of the 17th Ward. This was bound on the west by 1st Ave, on the east by Avenue B, on the north by E. 6th St, and on the south by E. 2nd St.

Thanks for your help, and keep hunting!

Steve

Hello! I agree, it does sound like we may well have a family connection. My information regarding the Schuck family came in a round about way. David SCHMITT (my GGgrandfather) enlisted in the Union Army about 1 to1 1/2 years after he came from Germany. He served in a unit from NY. According to his very lengthy pension file, at the time of his enlistment, he was living with his uncle, David Shook in NY. Later, upon his discharge, he went to live with his mother's sister in Columbus, OH, Susannah Schwartz, maiden name SHUCK. He was applying for disability, so there are many affidavits in the file regarding his health, background etc from family and friends. One affidavit was from his brother Maximillian SCHMITT. It was from Max's death certificate that I found their mother's name was ELIZABETH SCHUCK, unfortunately, I only can find "Germany" as the place of Max's birth. So, it appears that David Shuck had 2 sisters, Susannah(Schwartz/Swartz) and Elizabeth (Schmitt). I have an estimate that Susannah was born 1821-22 according to her affidavit in my GGgrandfather's pension file. She stated in Feb 1895 she was 73 and born in Bavaria. I am not sure how they ended up in Columbus, but the Schwartz/Schmitts all lived in the "Germantown" area of the city, where a huge immigrant popluation resided. I have found an Elizabeth Schmitt in Columbus census records, appropriate age range, but such a common name, hard to know if she was once Elizabeth Schuck, especially since we do not know if she came to the US. The reference to Frankenthal Rhonish was from an early pension document,in which I believe the information was provided by David Schmitt himself, so I feel that is reliable data. It has been difficult to track the family through the census records, as you well know, as the spellings change, the family is sometime listed as Schmitt, Schmidt or worse yet, SMITH! That in a nutshell, is the info I have regarding the Schuck family connection in Columbus. Did David or any of his family serve in the Civil War? I have ordered several pension files of ancestors from the National Archives, and have found a wealth of information in these records. Just a thought. Thanks for sharing your info...good luck on your search. Kathy

Re: Schuck Family-Germany(Bavaria?)-NY-Ohio

My great-great grandfather was David Schuck, born about 1830. His wife, Elizabeth, was born in Columbus, OH in 1831. Her surname name was probably Hess, her father's name was David, her mother's I don't know. The Columbus connection suggests we may have some folks in common. David also had a daughter Susan, perhaps named after the Susannah you mention. David died 19 April 1888 and Elizabeth on 21 October 1913, both in Buffalo, NY. They had ten children that I know of, three of whom probably died childless. I am a descendant of their daughter Mary.

I have a David Schuck arriving in New York in July 1850, aboard the William Hitchcock, from Havre, France. The ship list says he is from Bavaria and 23 at the time. That gives a birth year of 1827, at the low end of a range of possibilities. It also lists him as a farmer, but all my other references have him as a blacksmith. Farmers often have many such skills, so perhaps he took that as his trade once here.

I have another David Schuck arriving aboard the St. Denis on 9 Aug 1853. This David is from Hesse and 23, giving the birth year 1830. This listing is also harder to read, so I am less sure. Here too, he is listed as a farmer.

In both cases, the David Schuck was alone, with no other Schuck passengers.

David and Elizabeth lived in Manhattan at least through the 1870 census, but were in Buffalo, NY in the 1880 census, and I have a Buffalo City Directory listing for him in 1874. The 1860 Census lists Bavaria as his origin, the 1870 Census lists him as from Württemberg, the 1880 census as from Germany, so what little information I have conflicts.

As to his age, the 1860 census list him at 32, giving him a birth year of 1828. The 1870 Census lists him as 43, putting his birth year at 1827. The 1880 census list him as Shook and age 51, putting his birth year at 1829. Finally, his cemetery records have him born in Germany, and just past 58 years of age at his death in 1888, giving 1830 as a birth year. That puts either of the Davids' ship arrivals in the ballpark. Your Frankenthal reference makes the 1850 arrival from Bavaria more likely.

I am sorry to say that I haven’t been able to follow David back to Germany with any certainty. Your reference to Frankenthal is my first clue, so thank you. Frankenthal is in the Rhineland Palatinate, long ruled by Bavaria but separate from it, at the northeast corner of France.

I would appreciate anything you can tell me about the Schucks. You may not be connected to the Hesses, but if you have information on them, I would appreciate that too.

Thanks and good luck.
YES, I still have the photo! I will have to dig it out a bit and check the handwriting. If the photo is a match to the same family, then my best guess is that it would be of the younger son. Feel free to reply to me personally; gopeachy@aol.com

I'm investigating my husband's family lines and he has a Franz (Frank) Joseph Schuck of Fond du Lac, born 1861 in Breslau, Germany and died 1936 in Fond du Lac. Could the "J" on the photo be an "F"? Frank also had a son Frank Joseph Schuck, Jr. of Fond du Lac born in 1886.

Thanks for checking...if you still have the photo.

Anthony Schuck Brooklyn NY 1885

I am trying to identify an Anthony Schuck listed as witness on an 1885 marriage record for Anna M. Schaefer and Johann B Fischer. I cannot find any Anthony Schuck on the 1880 or 1900 Kings Co. NYS Federal census. I believe he is related to Anna M Schaefer since her mother was Catharina Schuck from Waldaschaf, Bavaria.

Katherine SCHUCK

I am looking for information on Katherine SCHUCK Stadler. She was my Grandfather's first wife. I found the following news article from the Wellsboro Agitater dated Wednesday, May 1, 1907...

DEATH: Mr. Albert Stadler was called to Millvale, N.J. last Wednesday to attend the funeral of his sister-in-law, Mrs. Herman Stadler of Kane, McKean County, who was poisoned by a nurse Sunday, April 21st. The nurse administratered to her patient a large dose of carbolic acid by mistake and Mrs. Stadler, who had given birth to a child a short time ago, was in so weakened a condition that nothing could be done to save her life, although everything known to medical skill was done for her. Her husband and three children survive her. Mrs. Stadler was 30 years of age.

During the funeral services a high wind arose and blew down a large brick smoke stack on a factory in Millvale, killing three girls. The mother of one of the victems was in attendance at the Stadler funeral at the time.

The 3 children she left behind were: Herman Stadler Jr., Claire and the infant she had just given birth to, Katherine.
