Found this family entering the US through New York on the ship Grosser Kurfurst in June 1903. They are indexed with the surname misspelled "Schiett". In the arrival record it shows that they last lived in "Hamm" Germany, sailed out of Bremen and were going to Lisbon Falls, Maine to live. It appears that Julius and Marie married in the US, had some children and then returned to Germany where daughter Anna was born.

There are four towns in Germany called Hamm that I could find in the map index I have. I don't know which one they were in.

I am not related to this family, but hope that this information will help in your search.

Been trying to locate anything from Germany on my great grandfather's family. He was Wilhelm Schütt who married Marie Reddersdorf (daughter of Carl and Sophie Zuhlke).
Wilhelm, Marie, Sophie and her daughters Lena and Bertha came here from Bremen to Baltimore to Chicago in 1881. The towns listed in Germany are Rollshausen, Gaveldorf or Caveldorf, and Kannover (Hannover) Vorpommern.

Anyone know what else I can do.

Meretje SCHUTT and Wilem SCHOUTEN

I have cause to believe that Meretje (Maritchue) SCHUTT/SCHUDT married Willem (William) SCHOUTEN on or about 25 March 1755 in Rumbout, Dutchess County, NY. I also believe that one of their sons was Ephraim SCHOUTEN (3 September 1758-16 December 1807), my g-g-g-g-grandfather. If anyone has confirmation of this, or if anyone has information related to either Meretje SCHUTT or Wilem SCHOUTEN, especially their ancestry, I would love to see it!

Thanks for the response. I've looked at the LDS film in Minzow, and the 1819 Census for Minzow, but I don't think Maria Schutt was born there. In the 1880 US Census her son Charles says she was born in Prussia and his father in Mecklenburg.

Charles was adopted as a young boy, and finding his parents was a happy moment. They moved to Canada in the early 1850s and both parents died within a few short years. Charles was raised by family friends in Canada - the Vicks - and he went by the name Charles Vick for the rest of his life.

Don't know if you have figured this out yet, but your best bet would be to get the marriage records from Minzow. They will name Maria's father and possibly mother and what town they were from. It is possible that she wasn't born in Minzow, but was working there when she met and married Johann.

I did find a Ginap (spelled Genab) family in Minzow in the 1819 census, but there was no Johann listed. Perhaps he was born after 1819?

Good luck in your search.
Laurice Johnson

PS the LDS church most likely has the Minzow records you need.

Hi,

I am still doing research on Alois L. Schutt of Cleveland, Ohio (a gunsmith). He was married three times (in Ohio), and originally came from Alsace in 1859. He married Anna Waldheger Hefner in 1877, soon after she was widowed from Frank Hefner (Hafner), and raised her two sons. He died in 1910.

Allen
allenamet@aol.com
I'm researching my GGGGmother, Maria Elizabeth Christiana Schutt, born in Prussia around 1825. Married to Johann Ginap from Minzow, Mecklenburg in 1849. Had a son, moved to Ontario, Canada, and died as a fairly young woman.

Minzow is a small town but Schutt is a very common name there.

Found: Lizzie Lee Schutt photos among other relations!!!

Yesterday I travelled to a great antique shop in Duncan, Oklahoma to look for old photos...my newest hobby. I always try to find ones with writing on the back to help me identify the persons in it and the family it belongs to. Then I spend the day searching the heck out of the internet and ancestry.com trying to find the right family to return the photos to.

Well, yesterday I hit a little jackpot of sorts. 10 photos that all have the same handwriting on the back in the same blue ink. Here's a little about each:

1. Mother & Young Toddler
Photographer: Bacon 254 East Main St Rochester, N.Y.
On Back: "Delia Eldridge and son Roy 1892"
I believe this to be Della D. ? born 1868 NY and her son Roy Clark Eldridge.
She married Eugene Eldridge b. 1859 NY.
Children: Roswell M b. 1886, Paul R. b. 1887, Roy Clark b. 1892, and Madeline b. 1899.

2. Husband seated & holding bible, Wife standing
Photographer: Morrison, Artist, Fillmore. (this is in NY)
On Back: "Clark Josiah Tanner Crandall Eldridge and Eliza Eldridge about 1895"
I believe this to be Clark (all those middle names) Eldridge born Aug 1848 died Apr 1915 and his 2nd wife Eliza Vickery born 1860 died 1950.
Children: Everett Eugene Eldridge b. 1884 d. 1973 (m. Edna Merritt, children: Lois Fiegl, Elsie Jean Perry, & Margaret Fishic), and Myrtie Frances Eldridge b. 1900 (m. Russell Ostrum).

3. Baby in Christening Gown
Photographer: Bacon 254 East Main St Rochester, N.Y.
At Bottom of Front: "Bessie Eldridge 1893"
I don't have any clue to her relation.

4. Lady with interesting necklace
Photographer: none listed
On Back: "Cora Locke Lyons"
I believe this to be Cora Locke born 1872 NY.
She's the daughter of William Locke & Sarah ?.
Siblings: Fred b. 1874, Hattie b. 1875 (m. Miles R. Cartwright, children: Wilbur E. b. 1905, Everett M. b. 1907)
She married James Lyons b. 1869 NY.
Children: Juanita Lyons b. 1900.

5. Lady with pearl chocker and earrings
Photographer: Brewer's Art Studios, Belfast, Fillmore, and Rusford, N.Y.
On Back: "Hattie Locke-Cartwright"
I believe this to be Hattie Locke sister to Cora listed above.

6. Young Man with top button buttoned
Photographer: none listed
On Back: "George McEwan"
I don't have any clue to his relation.

7. Young Man with pin on lapel
Photographer: Hewitt Union Block, Nunda, N.Y.
On Back: "Herbert Lee about 17yrs old about 1893"
I believe this to be Herbert Lee son of Benjamin Lee & Mary E. ?. He was born 1876 NY but is shown in Salisaw, Oklahoma in 1880 on census.
Siblings: James Lee (father of Clifford Lee b. 1898).

8. Toddler in gown sitting on fancy seat
Photographer: C.C. Hewitt, Mt. Morris, N.Y.
On Back: "Clifford Lee about 1899"
I believe this to be Clifford Lee son of James Lee and nephew of Herbert Lee as listed above.

9. Older Lady
Photographer: none listed
On Back: "Lizzie Lee Schutt"
I don't have any clue to her relation.

10. Lady with ornate gown
Photographer: From WM. Mables, Art Gallery, Canaseraga, N.Y.
On Back: "Lizzie Lee Schutt 1890"
I don't have any clue to her relation except that she is the same as photo 9.

Although I couldn't make connections between the different surnames I still think they are connected in some way since the same person wrote on all of them. I couldn't trace any good leds to live descendants nor could I find an active member on ancestry.com through the family trees. Hopefully someone will read this and genuinely be connected to at least a few of these photos. I'd love to find the family that has connections to them all....the lady who lost them to begin with would be great. But I know that isn't likely.

If you think you are related, please reply here or shoot me an email at avigailsmommy@yahoo.com
I can email copies if requested.

~Amber Harkins

Re: Schutts in Iowa / Nebrask

Hello!

My Schutt line - as much as I know anyway - is:

Hans Schutt (born ~1828) married to Dorathea/Dora (born ~1830) both born in Germany and are buried in Benton County, IA

Their children:

William or Wilhelm (1853 - 1917) married Wilhelmina Voss (1865-1938, he was born in Kiel, Germany, she in Holstein, and I believe they both died in Keystone, IA. I understand William was mayor of Keystone and I do have a couple of articles mentioning him as well as an obituary from the Keystone Bulletin that tells a little bit about his life. He had eight children - I have names and a little bit of info about them if you are interested.

Julius - I know very little of him.

Joachim - my direct ancestor - born ~1853) in Germany, married Henrietta Kloppenburg (1858-1881)born in Germany, died in Luzerne, IA. They had one daughter, Jessie Mabel Schutt - my great-grandmother.

I believe Julius and Joachim's mother was Dora, while William's mother was not. I believe William had a full sister, though I'm not sure of her name or what became of her.

Back to Joachim - I know he married a woman named Caroline and that they lived in Luzerne in 1885 and had a son Leo aged 2 and a daughter Elizabeth aged 0 at that time. My great-grandmother Jessie lived with them too and was 5 years old.

By 1900, when Jessie (my great-grandmother) was 20, she was living with other relatives in Keystone. I've found no other records of her father Joachim or step-mother Caroline, or Jessie's half-brother or half-sister.

I had heard that Joachim went to Nebraska, family records indicate that he ran a store of some kind in Omaha and I have found a couple of references to such, but I have not been able to find any other records of him. Can you help? I'd love to know what became of them!

I do have some documents about the Schutts during the Keystone period I'd be happy to share if you are interested.

Thank you so much for your reply - I'd love any relevant info you might have to share!

Sarah
SCHUTT, GEORGE

Rank and organization: Coxswain, U.S. Navy. Born: 1833, Ireland. Accredited to: New York. G.O. No.: 59, 22 June 1865. Citation: As coxswain on board the U.S.S. Hendrick Hudson, St. Marks, Fla., 5 and 6 March 1865. Serving with the army in charge of Navy howitzers during the attack on St. Marks and throughout the fierce engagement, Schutt made remarkable efforts in assisting transport of the gun, and his coolness and determination in courageously remaining by his gun while under the heavy fire of the enemy were a credit to the service to which he belonged.
