yetta schwartz brooklyn emigrated to brooklyn around 1915

My grandmother's name was yetta schwartz hellman, and she emigrated here from Romania around 1915. Schwartz is her maiden name. I am told that she has a cousin who lived in New york named Sarah Posner, their mothers were sisters. I am interested in knowing what ever became of relatives from Romania after the war. My grandmother Yetta had three sister, whose names were Ruchel, Frances ( or faigie), and Rosie. Those three sisters unfortunately went from Romania to concentration camps, but then managed to emigrate to Israel. They had children and raised big families there. I am still trying to know the name of the town she was born in, my uncle tells me its outside bucharest and called "michelen" and I looked that up, to my knowledge there is no such town in Romania. They said it was right on the coast of the black sea, facing russia. If anyone knows the name of even knows my grandmother, please respond! Some other names of her cousins from brooklyn were Izzy and Rose Abraham, children Lester and Sidney. Sidneys wife is named Sylvia. I heard they owned a restaurant in Nj called SidAllens. There are also a Jay and Phil Furman who lived in great neck, LI. Thanks, Randi

Re: SWARTZ/SCHWARTZ/SCHWARZ etc, confused! OMG!

WOW! I was searching through the message boards and came across this message that I originally posted back in Dec 1999 regarding my Swartz line (my maiden name). Can you believe that I am STILL stuck with this line in the exact place I was when I posted this in 1999!! I still haven't been able to go any further back than 1811.

Here's this furthest back in my line that I have: Elias Swartz b:Nov 20, 1811 in Hatfield Twp, Montgomery Co, PA - d:Aug 31, 1894 in Danboro, Bucks Co, PA. Elias married Elizabeth Conver (Conover) b:Jun 11, 1814 in Hatfield Twp, Montgomery Co, PA - d:Apr 27, 1890 in Hilltown Twp, Bucks Co, PA. They were married in Hilltown Twp, Bucks Co on Aug 10, 1834. I have alot of info on their children and my direct line all the way to the present. But I can't figure out who Elias' parents or siblings were, that's where I'm still stuck at even after all these years.

I made a trip to PA in 2005 (I'm from MI), I did find Elias & Elizabeth's and their children's graves and got some great pictures of the headstones, but that's about it.

To me, this is my most important line since it's my maiden name and it's frustrating that I am still stuck in the same place after 13 years, how is that even possible! I really need some ideas on what to try, and where to look, who to contact, what I may have overlooked, etc.

Sarah, my dad's name is Elliott Schwartz, and it could be that we are relatives. Is your mom's name Susan??? I just now read your reply that was made on ancestry.com back 10 years ago. (You could say I been pre-occupied with other things since 2000, thus I have not checked back to this since then) Anyway, if we are related then I'd love to talk on the phone. :) I currently live in South Carolina and have a teaching career.
Hi there,

Not sure if there's any connection, but the tailor detail caught my eye. My great grandfather is Julius Schwartz, born 1897 in Poland. I know he was living in Brooklyn by the 1920s, where he worked as a tailor/dressmaker. Married to Lilly (also Polish; last name unknown), daughter Shirley and son Seymour. Have been unable to track down any further info on his parents/family. I have heard family stories that he left Poland with a brother. Please let me know if any of this sounds like a plausible fit.

Thanks so much.

Yeah, I've done quite a bit of research for some of my friends with Norwegian ancestry, and they also pased a law in the early 1900s about picking a name and sticking with it. Some took the patronymic name and are now "stuck" with one ancestor's name like Jacobson, and some took the name of their farm or town, like Stensaas. Somehow it seemed easier to figure out than our Eastern European Jewish names.

I see double names, so maybe Itzko Leib. It sure could be the grandfather. Who knows? It's so hard to figure out.

In Sweden, they also did away with patronymics legally. But I have cousins there TODAY who are still using them!! I'm not sure how they've managed to get away with it, maybe the law isn't enforced? It would be a pretty silly law to enforce anyway. One ancestor who came over was born with a patronymic (Nilsdotter) but ended up using the surname made from her father's patronymic (Petersson to Peterson).

I just hope they start filming some of these vital records and getting them online! I'm leery of sending money to places I don't know to people I don't know to get copies!

Yeah, I figured at some point it was a patronymic, but I thought perhaps it could be her grandfather who was Itzko (Isaac, perhaps?) - before they took actual last names. I don't recall how we came to think her father's name was Leib, but I thought perhaps her middle name Laub came from that.

Unfortunately Itzkowitz is not a surname, but a patronymic. It isn't likely that they're related due to that. I wish Iasi wasn't such a big place, hard to narrow it down with that.

Your Taube's father's name should be Itzko.

My great grandmother was Taube/Toby/Tilly Laub Itzkowitz born abt 1866 in Iasi, married Hyman Silberman/Silverman, and came to NY in 1909. I think her father's name was Laib, and I think she had siblings Rosa, Mendel/Max and at least one more.

I've attached two pictures of Taube. In the first, the angular face looks a little like your Sam. In the second, she looks very much like your Rebecca/Rivka.

Do you think we can make any connection? Do you suppose Rebecca and Taube could be sisters?

Probably should move this to an Itzkowitz thread, but not sure how to do that.

Isaac Schwartz | Russia film composer, 86

Isaac Schwartz, 86, the composer whose music adorned some of the most popular movies of the Soviet era, died Sunday at his home outside St. Petersburg, Russia, the St. Petersburg Composers Union said.
Mr. Schwartz started his career in the early 1950s, eventually earning fame for his romantic and melodic soundtracks to such beloved Soviet films as The White Sun of the Desert (1969) and The Captivating Star of Happiness (1975).

Helped by composer Dmitri Shostakovich early in his career, Mr. Schwartz went on to write the music for 110 movies and 35 theatrical performances.

He was born in 1923 in then-Soviet Ukraine. His family later moved to Leningrad, now called St. Petersburg, where his father was arrested on trumped-up charges by the Soviet secret police in 1936 and executed two years later.

Mr. Schwartz's family spent eight years in internal exile before being allowed to return home. -

Tony Curtis,

LAS VEGAS (AP) - Tony Curtis,
molded himself from a 1950s movie heartthrob to a respected actor, showing a determined streak that served him well with such films as "Sweet Smell of Success," ''The Defiant Ones" and "Some Like It Hot."
The Oscar-nominated actor died about 9:25 p.m. PDT Wednesday at his Henderson, Nev., home of a cardiac arrest, Clark County .
Curtis began in acting with frivolous movies that exploited his handsome physique and appealing personality but then steadily moved to more substantial roles, starting in 1957 in the harrowing show business tale "Sweet Smell of Success."
In 1958, "The Defiant Ones" brought him an Academy Award nomination as best actor for his portrayal of a white racist escaped convict handcuffed to a black escapee, Sidney Poitier. The following year, he donned women's clothing and sparred with Marilyn Monroe in one of the most acclaimed film comedies ever, Billy Wilder's "Some Like It Hot."
His first wife was actress Janet Leigh of "Psycho" fame; actress Jamie Lee Curtis is their daughter.

Curtis was born Bernard Schwartz in the Bronx in 1925, the son of Hungarian Jews who had emigrated to the United States after World War I. His father, Manny Schwartz, had yearned to be an actor, but work was hard to find with his heavy accent. He settled for tailoring jobs, moving the family repeatedly as he sought work.

"I was always the new kid on the block, so I got beat up by the other kids," Curtis recalled in 1959. "I had to figure a way to avoid getting my nose broken. So I became the crazy new kid on the block."

Schwartz, Carl Johan - baker

Hi! A Carl Johan Schwartz, baker's apprentice by occupation, fathered an illigitimate child who bore his name in Arendal, Norway, in 1859. There is no trace otherwise to be found of this person in Norwegian records, (only the mother's declaration of the infant's paternity in its christening record) and we assume that he may have come from Denmark or Germany, as several of the bakers in the town, as shown in the 1865 census, were from these countries. A descendant would like to trace the child's paternal lineage, and would very much appreciate tips about bakers by this name who may have served their apprenticeship in Norway. He may, of course, be Norwegian, and may be registered with a different surname in other records. Any suggestions appreciated!

Simon Schwartz was my great grandfather. He had a tailor shop on Beacon Hill in Boston, and married my great grandmother who had been an employee. My mother Alice Josephine Schwartz was the daughter of Simon and Lizzie's child Josephine, my grandmother.

My grandmother yetta schwarz came here thru ellis island from Romania in about 1911. she lived in Brooklyn. I think her name was changed to Schwartz when she got here. She married Louis Hellman, and they had two children, mildred and seymour. She had 4 sisters who stayed in Roumania and then emigrated to israel years later. It would be great to know if there are any close relatives around... thanks, randi. I am mildred's daughter. my address is joy0467@yahoo.com.

I'm sure we must be related. I am the GG granddaughter of Christian Schwartz through his daughter Mary who married Henry Bender. I have a small amount of information on the Wiersteiner family but would love to learn more. I have quite a bit of information about Old Economy and have some of the original records from there. I also have the original surveyors record of the property in Mink Shoals of the property which I believe your family owned until recently. Please email me at craftysbs@juno.com so we can share information.

I am very new at this, but I know I have an ancestor Named Christian Schwartz who lived in the Charleston, WVa area (where I was born)and was part of the Economy Community. I am the grandson of Conrad Wiersteiner (C's brother?). Your question has an old date so I'm not sure you are still around or interested. If you are, send me a note.

Manheim, Lancaster, PA Schwartz/Swartz

I am looking for further information on a Michel Swartz/Schwartz who married an Elizabeth. They lived in Manheim from at least 1840 (probably prior to this but its hard finding census information) to 1900. Michel was born in PA, June of 1810 and he lived until sometime between 1900 and 1910. Elizabeth was born in PA also, in 1812 and she died sometime between 1880 and 1900.

Their children are as follows:
William (1836 - )
Uriah (1838 - )
Harriet (1842 - )
Samuel (1845 - )
Mary Elizabeth (1846 - )
Abraham (1847 - )
Rebecca (1850 - )
Jacob (1852 - 1885)

Any information concerning this family would be fantastic and extremely helpful!

Thanks!

Tiggie,
I saw a change that you had previously added to an Ancestry.com website re: infants born in East Chester, Nova Scotia. I'd like to speak to you about that.
I am the U.S. spokesperson for a large group of people who all originated from the IMH in East Chester.
There were 3 Schwartz babies (three boys & one girl) who came to the U.S from East Chester, N.S. One was the son of Mildred Schwartz. The other boy was the son of Irving & Bernice Schwartz and the girl was the daughter of William H. Schwartz. The last one came to Newark, NJ. and I am already in contact with him. Which one of the Brooklyn trio are you?
Riva Barnett
