Re: Scollan/collins

My aunt, Joyce Scollon, researched this line many years ago. There was another brother named James (b 1836). He came to America on November 20, 1849. His parents are James Scollon (spelling variants on that...sometimes Scallon) and Rose McManus. There's a gap in ages of the sibs. I know that the four brothers (Phillip, James, John, and Felix) were in America. I have no documentation to support that the parents were ever here at the time that I am writing this. But, 1901 Census of Ireland lists James (91 years old), Rose (79 years old) and Charles (42 years old). So I am wondering if the four boys came here and one son, Charles, stayed there with his parents? As of this writing I can find no death information, but given that James was 91 years old...I suspect that he is in Ireland. Not sure about Rose. (I did think I ran across something about death in the US, but no supporting documentation...perhaps a gravestone or something.) Or Charles. I have no supporting documentation that these are in fact the right people, but they fit the timeline and other supporting data rather well.

I used this site and search the 1901 Census (I know that from other data on my family that he would have been very old in 1901)on Sc*ll*n for Surname, James for Name, Fermanagh (because I had that from his son's obituaries in Iowa), and male for gender.

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/search/

Once you are there, I chose James Scallon from Rahall because that was the only one that fits my criteria. (married to Rose, age would be about right), then you can see other links that go with the 1901 Census (make sure to expand the data or just go look at the original):

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Fermanagh/M...

to get Household Return (Form A):
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000779652/

Enumerators abstract:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000779646/

House and Building Return:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000779647/

Out Offices and Farm Steadings:
http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/reels/nai000779648/

Those are chock full of location data. My takeaway from that Census is that they did have another brother Charles. I'm not sure what accounts for the gaps in ages. That would still leave a huge gap in sibs...something like 13 years. And it still strikes me odd that they had all boys, but could happen. I'm thinking that there are more sibs that we don't know about, but the National Archives of Ireland only has two years online (1901 and 1911) so I don't think we are going to find them there. Charles was in his 40's at that point. We need an earlier resource or reference. But...there is a LOT of location information on the forms of these documents that could point to clues. If these are even the right people.

That fits my line. From John (1839) to Bartholomew (B.F. Scollon - my grandpa) to John F. Scollon (my dad) to me. I have a lot of information from Iowa and South Dakota, but I can't get much on John (1839) back to Ireland or anything that happened over there. Like hitting a wall in the census. Not enough information to get me over the ocean it seems.

bruggeman.sande@gmail.com

WOW! Do you mean you studied Scollon or Scollan?

Was Scollon a variation of a place name? What is the original spelling and where are the splits? Is there a reason for those splits?

Do you share information? I would love to see that. My family is the same as dscollon in previous posts.

Killian,

Thank you for your comments on the Scollan name. I am away from my Scollan family files and won't be able to send you a copy of Thomas Scollan's letter containing the Fermanaugh reference until later this week.

As a Leitrim area resident with the Scollan name I am wondering if you can help me determine the parents of my great-grandfater Patrick Scollan. Patrick came to the US in June 1857 at age 15. He was accompanied by Thomas Fanning from Fenaugh Parish, Leitrim. Thomas and brother Francis were early settlers of Milwaukee Wisconsin. Patrick went to Milwaukee with Thomas. Between 1857 and 1972 Patrick met and married Ellen Scollon (Scollins) who had left Ireland and settled in Auburn NY with her brothers and sisters. Ellen's family records are at St. Mary's Church in Fenaugh.

The 1880 US Census lists Patrick and having two brothers living with him in Milwaukee, Frank b.1847+/- and Thomas b. 1850+/-. Can't confirm brother connection. Frank's mother may have been Winfred Walpole.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,

Frank Scollan

Hi,

I was always told the etymology of the Scollan name came from the old Irish Gaelic Surname Ó Scolláin of Ballyscullion ("Ó Scullín's townland") Co Derry. The surname Scullion is a very popular name in Derry today. Another name derived from Ó Scolláin is Scully. The fact that name is most popular in the counties of Fermanagh, Cavan & Leitrim (where I am from) suggests the Derry connection. My Great Great Grandfather arrived in Fenagh, Leitrim from Irvinestown, Fermanagh in 1826 but there were many Scollan families in Leitrim before 1826. The idea of the shipwrecked French Sailor sounds very romantic and I would love to get a copy of the letter. I spell my name in Irish Cillian Ó Scolláin which adds to the first assumption.

Kind Regards

Killian Scollan

To be fair the way the spelling seems to go, especially in the early days in Ireland A's, I's, O's and I's seem to be interchangeable, that is certainly my experience. My Gt Gt grandfather I found initially in Tithe records as Scollin, after that thereafter the children appear in records with various spellings.

And my own surname has evolved into Scullion....!!

I would vote for all the above variations being housed on one thread.

I am looking for information on a James Scollon about whom I know rather little. He was born in Ireland, date unknown to parents unknown. Prior to 1865, he married Margeret McGrenery (also originally of Ireland). They had four children:

John J (b:?, d:?)
Mary Elizabeth (b:1865 in NY, d:1950 in PA, m:1890 William J Doyle in Philadelphia)
Margaret Jane (b:1867 in Philadelphia, d:1867 in Philadelphia)
Catherine Frances (b:1874 in Philadelphia, d:1916 in Philadelphia)

City directories for Philadelphia list Margeret as a widow of James by 1887 and while she is listed in an 1881 directory, James is absent and perhaps has already died by then.

His son became a salesman of segars (cigars?), daughter Mary married a contractor and it is through her I am descended, daughter Catherine worked as a teacher and died single.

Mary's descendants would pass down the spelling Scullian in family history.

I do not believe that your James and Mary Scollon of Philadelphia are related to the Barnsboro Scollons. There are 2 James and Mary Scollons. James Thomas Scollon and Mary Vornhold were my great grandparents. I have recently heard from a woman in New York who is also looking for the same James and Mary as you. If you are interested, please contact me.

My husband's ancestors were from Lisnaskea, County Fermanagh, in Northern Ireland.

Three Scollon brothers settled in Central Iowa in the late 1800's. They were Phillip, Felix and John Scollon all born in Lisnaskea. Phillip, born in 1833, immigrated to America in 1859. He was naturalized in Philladelphia and later moved to Illinois and then Iowa. John, born in 1839, immigrated in 1871. Felix, born in 1846,immigrated in 1867. They all eventually settled in Central Iowa where they lived until their deaths. Their parents were James and Rosa Scollon. Rosa came to the US in 1879. It is not clear if her husband came with her. I'm told that there were other brothers and sisters, but these are the only ones I know of.
a
My grandmother was Mary Scollon Sauvageau born in Phila. in
1886 to James and Mary Scollon. James was the son of Owen
and ann Scollon, both of whom were born in Ireland. Owen
was born in 1824 and his wife Ann in 1825. They had 7 children who's last name was Scollon: Sarah, William, James, Catherine, Frank, Elizabeth and Charles. They also had a daughter with the last name of Sweeney who's given name was Mary. All of the children were born in Penna. Mary was 3 years older than Sarah who was the elder of the 7 Scollons. If you have any information that you can share with me, I will be most thankful.

Alan
I see from various posts you know a lot about Scollans, Scollons and all the other variations in and around Leitrem and Fermanagh, and I wonder if you have come across these branches?
My starting point is my great great grandmother Sarah Scollon, wife of John Parker of Ora Beg, Cleenish, Fermanagh, who married around 1830.
The Tithe applotment 1834 records for Orabeg list
John and Thomas Scallan, and Patrick Scallan, as well as
Thomas Parker, and the 1862 Griffiths; Patrick Spollon and
William Parker (my great grandfather).
In 1888 a James Scollen (1864-1904) married William's niece, Sarah Jane Parker- though he changes the spelling to Scholan!, and emigrated to Connecticut, where descendents live today.
James was the son of Owen Scollen (1837- ) and Mary Gilmurry (1845-) of Carrickaloughran in the parish of Cleenish. Owen and Mary had 7 other children between 1866 and 1884.
I would be very interested in learning how these might fit with other branches you are aware of
Best wishes

FYI re the Scottish angle - my dad told me that his grandfather & most of the local men used to go over to Scotland for the potato season - they got more money picking potatoes in Scotland than at home - some then married Scottish girls and many never went home....I am a bit rusty as I haven't done any research lately.

I too believe that I have come from a line of Scollan, Scollon Scollin or Scollion in County Leitrim.

Vowels obviously seem to be interchangable!!

My Gt Gt Grandfather was Owen according to his son John's mariage certificate was married to a Maria Green, I have managed to discover that they appear to have originated in the Parish of Cloonclare (townland Carrickrevagh)....

John left for Scotland and the surname became Scullion .... here he married and had seven kids prior to being killed in action in WW1in 1918...

I have managed to find an Owen on www.familysearch.org (lds) who was married to a Mary Macgrainry or similar ...

I have a web site which has most of my research although I dont have much 'Irish' info....

There does appear to be a Patrick Scollion in the 1901 census of the area of Carrickrevagh...I assume this is a sibling of my Gt Grandfather ....

www.scullionhistory.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk

Loved to hear from anyone with any info.

John I would be very grateful to hear the results of your trip to Ireland. My ggg grandfather was a Patrick Scollon/Scollan/Schollon/Scollins/Collins/Scollans/Scollons, depending on which document you believe. He was born c1822 in Co Fermanagh, as was his wife Maria (nee Hart), but they married in Preston in 1848. Patrick's father was James, and Maria's was John Hart, a Cooper. I would be interested in any relevant info you stumble across while over there.
HI Gail
My brother came across your search for Scollons in Ireland. My name was Gail Scollon prior to marriage and I live in Canada. More specifically in British Columbia. I'm wondering if we are related. Please respmd if you get this message.
Gail
