SCURR Felixkirk, Kirsk, Rough Lea, Merrington, Spennymoor - Durham and Yorkshire

Is anyone related to any of the SCURR's who lived in these places in Yorkshire and Durham?

My oldest SCURR ancestor is WILLIAM SCURR (c.1660-1712)who died in Thirsk, North Yorkshire. He had about 7 children, his sons were William, Thomas and RICHARD (1687-1752). Richard was born in Thirsk and died in Felixkirk. He had son JOHN SCURR (1712-1787) who married FRANCES STILLINGTON and they had son CHARLES SCURR (born 1736)who married ELIZABETH DALE. Their children were Thomas, John, Isabella, Christopher and William.

I am related to their son Thomas 1761-1850(who married Hannah STOREY). His son was Charles Scurr 1790-1885(married Jane WHELDON. Their son John Scurr 1842-1893(married Mary Nattress) and had many children including son Charles Scurr 1863-1944(married Annie RUDD). By this time they were living in Spennymoor (Merrington) on North Close Farm, which is still in my family.

Dear Everett

Of the Frances's you mention from Felixkirk I have the following information:
Frances Scurr bpt 1 Jun 1779 daughter of George Scurr & Ann (nee Brown) buried at Felixkirk 12 Mar 1795 died 6 Mar 1795
Frances Scurr bpt 21 Jul 1751 born 25 Jun 1751 daughter of John Scurr & Frances (nee Stillington) she married George Milner 11 May 1779 and died in 1803.

All I can tell you about Fanny Scurr bpt 21 Jul 1782 is that she was the daughter of James Scurr & Elizabeth (nee Bolton). She never appears again in any of the Felixkirk records, if sh died she is not buried there and there is no record of her marriage in Felixkirk or any of the other records that I have found regarding the name Scurr and in over 20 years of research I have never come across the name Waud in connection with any of the Scurr families of England.
However if she ended up in the USA I can well understand that as her younger brother Charles left England after his wife of just 18 months died.
He re-married in 1820 in MAINE. His wife Sarah Coulson was from Barnsville OHIO.They went on to have at least 11 children.

Sorry not to be of any further help
Sharon Buchanan

Sharon,
I am researching the John Waud family from Doncaster, Yorkshire. John married a Frances Scurr. I find two Frances Scurrs and one Fanny Scurr in Felixkirk on Family Search. I believe that the Fanny Scurr is the most likely wife of John because their ages, which appear in an 1850 US census has them born about 1782. I cannot find either John's DOB or a marriage record for them, which should have been around 1806 since their 1st daughter, Elizabeth Waud was born 1807. Can you shed any light on my problem.
Thanks, Everett Smith, evsmith@instawave.net

Hi
Betsy Payne nee Scurr contacted me some time ago asking for any information on her family before they went to the USA, which I supplied her with it is this information she has posted with no mention that she has never researched any of this.

I am a direct descendant of another Richard Scurr born 1687 and buried in 1752 in Felixkirk, his father was William buried 1712 and possibly a brother of Richard buried 1716 but as the records are in such poor state this may never be proved usless the Wills I need to look at give any family information

Your Esther was baptised Esther Elizabeth Scurr 19 May 1876 at St James, Ratcliffe London she was born 8 Feb 1876, her mother Esther Elizabeth Mary Costen was John William Scurr's 2nd wife his first wife was Mary Ann Wicks and she had 3 children to John before she died.

The information on Betsy's tree is well out of date and she has just contacted me last week for any new info or updates which I am inclined to ignore. I don't mind sharing the information with anyone but think it unfair to keep suppling the fruits of my labour's for someone else to post as their own work.

Regards
Sharon Buchanan

Hi

If you can connect Esther 1876 born Poplar to Richard died 1716 Felixkirk we have either been in touch before or you have been in touch with someone has has been given information from me.
Sadly the answers to your questions may never be answered I have not found them after 20 years of research.
William Scurr 1735-1783 had 5 children the mother is not shown on any of the baptisms and William did not marry in Felixkirk or anywhere close by.
It is not proven that Clare was the wife of William c.1663 only that at her burial she is described as a widow and that William had a daugher named Claire, William's own burial prior to 1730 has not been found neither has a marriage to a William to anyone named Claire.
Likewise Richard buried 1716 had 2 KNOWN children but no marriage has been found.
These events may have been in Felixkirk but the registers for the periods prior to the early 1700's are in such a poor state and are totally unreadable.
I hav spent many many hours over the past 20 years or so trying to find the missing information.
One possibility is that I have found several very early Wills for Scurr's of Boltby/Felkixkirk at The Borthwick Institute in York but as yet have not had time to examine them.
I am in the process of making much of my research available on the Internet but it will be a long process.
It can be found here:
<a href="http://uk.geocities.com/scurronename@btinternet.com/Index.htm" target="_blank">http://uk.geocities.com/scurronename@btinternet.com/Index.ht...
Dear Sharon

Have just started doing my Scurr fam hist. Through the census returns 1841-1901 have managed to do my tree!

The family originate from Boltby/Felixkirk area and then onto Hull, E Yorks. I am having difficulty in locating the marriage of one Richard Scurr & Jane. He was born 1791, brother Jonah 1793. He was the Landlord of the Carpenter's Arms in Boltby village in 1861 aged 69. He was also a Master Carpenter so maybe the pub was named after him?

Have we any connection at all, if so I wld love to hear from you.

Pam Ince.
