I bought a copy of his book about 30 years ago. I can't find any ties to my Sebastian line, but that's because it seems to stop in King George Co., VA about 1830! If your line is from KY, you may have better luck. Other than never seeing my book again, is there something I can help you with? Perhaps I can copy some information & mail to you? I live near Seattle. Check my tree, Redman-Bunyea Families, & see if we could link up. Bonnie

Hello Joan. From my research this far back, lots of conflicting info out there. This would be my 8th-Great Grandparents - #1 Stephen Sebastian (b.1653)came to Maryland in 1674/75. His rights were proven June 15, 1675. How much time between his arrival and proven rights?,I don't know, but,I think he came with wife Elizabeth and infant son Stephen Jr.(b.1674). Still looking for ship list. Stephen Jr may have been born in England or on board ship. I have 3 other children. A short time later, the family moved across the bay to Stafford Co. Virginia.
7th Great Grandparents
Stephen Jr. married Elizabeth(mnu-maiden name unk)probably in Stafford Co Va. I have 1 child- Isaac Sebastian (b.1705 - d. 1735)
6th Great Grandparents
Isaac Sebastian married Rachel Spicer(b.1707) Child - Stephen Sebastian(III) (b.1731 -d.1785) Only tied 1 child to this couple. Info found they both died around 1735??
5th Great Grandparents
Stephen Sebastian(III) married Elizabeth Isaacs probably 1749. 2 children - Benjamin (b1750 in VA) I believe this family then moved to North Carolina. 2nd child - William Sebastian (b.1759 in Wake Co. North Carolina.
4th Great Grandparents
William Sebastian married Sarah Sally Embry in 1784 probably in North Carolina. They then moved to Madison Co. Kentucky. I have 5 children, of which Wiley is the 3rd child and my 3rd great grandfather.
From here on I have a prepared genealogy from Great Uncle Ernie that he did in 1933 that has been passed down through the family. I also have birth, death and marriage records that I have gotten.

Sebastian adopted into Hall Family

I am hitting a brick wall in researching my great-grandfather Edward M. Hall born in Kentucky in about 1876 last known to be living in Kansas in about 1920. He is not the one who was in McPherson, Kansas in the 1900 Census. He is the Ed M. Hall living in Fountain Township, Ottawa County, Kansas at the home of his in-laws the Gieseckes in that same census.

The problem is that the family lore has always been that he was born a Sebastian but his parents died in some sort of epidemic when he was a child (probably around 1885) and that he was taken in and raised by some Halls who may have been relatives. There was also the story that he was Portuguese which is not supported by the censuses I have which consistently list his father as having been born in Ireland and his mother as having been born in Germany.

There is also the fact that we have a 1906 newspaper report of him heading from Ottawa County, Kansas back to the Lexington, Kentucky area to take over the family farm left to him by his father’s estate. I suppose this could have been his adoptive father if the Halls were a childless couple.

I would just dismiss the whole thing as a fabrication if it hadn’t been for a phone call my parents received 20 years ago or more. The person who was calling was traveling through the area and had promised his mother to try to track down relatives. When my mom explained how the family name should actually be Sebastian, he became very excited and said that his family had the same story and his mother (or grandmother?) was a sister to Ed named Mary. We didn’t get any more details since he didn’t have time to stop by and we never heard from them again.

If anyone has any information about this, I would be very grateful to hear about it.

Thank you in advance,

Hi Dave,

I only just came across this site. My grandfather is Ben Sebastian from Sugar Island. His real name is William Wilson Sebastian, and he was married to LaVina (sp) Gravelle. I'm not familiar with the Blanche you'd mentioned, but June lived in the Detroit area and Kenneth is my (half) uncle, who lived here in Sault Ste Marie. After LaVina died, Benny married Agnes Waishkey (Bay Mills)and they had 4 children (my mother being the oldest), tho Calvin died very young.

Someone else mentioned John Sebastian. There are 2 of them, my great and great-great grandfather.

If I can help further, please don't hesitate to let me know.

I'm looking for information about William Sebastian. He was born in Missouri about 1821. He married Esther Annie about 1844. I do not know her maiden name. They lived in Quincy, Illinois and St. Francois County, Missouri. They had three children, Flora (1846), Sarah (1847), George (1849). He may died in the 1880's.
I love to hear from someone who has information on him and his wife.
My grandfather, Bradley Sebastian, was born 7/21/1899. I have tried to find a copy of his birth certificate and cannot locate one. It has been said that he was a twin, but I cannot find any evidence of this. He apparently maybe did not ever file for a birth certificate. I know he was born in Breathitt County Ky. His parents were Hiram and Charity (McIntosh) Sebastian. Can you help me with any information? I would love to see all the censuses you have on pdf. You can email me at glenda.schmidt@fuse.net
Thank you.

It does not mention this William's parents - but, of course, it does have the author's lineage.

The worst part of this book is separating the different lines. Every family has common first names, like Benjamin, William, Stephen, Lewis, etc. It's hard to trace your family with the book. So much is repeated and jumbled up in the different chapters. Luckily, my grandfather is listed in the book, and I was able to trace him back to Benjamin, b. ca 1740.

I searched the book over and over - I can only find info on the marriage of William Sebastian and Sarah Embry in Wake Co., NC on Dec. 12, 1784. It is mentioned twice in the book, but with no other info - no list of children at all. I'm sorry, but I know this doesn't help you in your search.

I don't know what country our Sebastians came from. The earliest proven information I have seen is on a DAR Record Copy it is for Stephen Sebastian b. 03 Mar 1733 Stafford Co, VA d (ante) 30 Sep 1785 Wilkes Co-probably North Carolina. Stephen is on the Roster of Soldiers from NC in The Amer. Rev. p. 293. His heirs received a land warrant for his service. His residence was given as Halifax Co, NC.

I have noticed messages regarding William Hobart Sebastian's book, can anyone tell me where his Sebastian family were from? My Sebastian family were from Germany, I realize there are Sebastian's from other countries. Just curious!!!! Thanks!
