I have a book written by a Secord that has this Isaac and Sarah in its pages.
"A Genealogy of the Clifton, Leaton, Rourke and Secord Families" pg. 60
"William Z. Secord was born 13 October 1820 in New York State. He was the son of Isaac Secord and Sarah Wellman. He died 9 October 1883 in Williamston, Ingham County, Michigan. Isaac, a native of Canada, and Sarah, a native of New York, were married in Canada in 1808. William was the fifth in a family of nine children."

Would the marriage record in Canada in 1808 give you your answer?

Does anyone have any birth records on a Hulda Lucretia Secord b. 9 February 1883, either in Saginaw or Battle Creek, MI? Her death certificate reads that her parents are "John Secord and Iva Fuller". I have located a John A. Secord who married a Ida May Fuller on 21 January 1882 in Saginaw. These might be her parents. Another reason is that John Secord's own mother was named Hulda and it is common for a new parent to give a loved one's name to a baby. I just need to get my proof whether or not I am on the right track. Thank you for any clues you can provide.

Susan,
Just refreshing this posting to you.
I have information on Daniel Secord 1756 married to Elizabeth and their children.
I obtained a copy of Daniel's 999 year Brant lease. I then go through Daniel's son Daniel. I obtained my United Empire Loyalist certificate as a descendant of Daniel Secord who fought with the Indian Department Brant's Volunteers. He was given land by Joseph Brant, chief of the Mohawks after the American Revolution. Daniel settled near the Mohawk Chapel in Brantford, Ontario.
I have been in touch with 2 of Daniel's son Isaac's descendants. They shared family information.
I haven't done too much research on the Secord's since I got my certificate but am willing to share what I have. Give me some time to update.
Thanks Pat

Hi Susan
I am only related to Isaac thru his wife Sarah Wellman who would be a ggg-aunt(sister of my ggg- grandfather George William Wellman. Both were children of Zadock Wellman b.1760,Conecticutt.
Or so the theory goes.
Zadock Wellman was enumerated in Fairfield, Herkimer County,NY in 1800 with three daughters and four sons. Then he was listed on the Early Ohio Tax Lists at Ancestry.com in 1808 in Trumball County,Ohio and then later in 1820-27 in Wayne County, Michigan and finally in Oakland County, Michigan in 1830-45 with his sons Joel and Aaron. This was very near Pontiac were Isaac Secord lived. Also Isaac lived in Wayne County Michigan circa the same time frame as Zadock Wellman,1820.My direct gggrandfather (Joshua Wellman) was born in Oakland County, Michigan in 1826 and in his biographical note claims his father(George William Wellman) and his grandfather(? Zadock Wellman)were among the first white pioneers in Oakland County. This fits the historical picture.
The coindidental evidence of locations and time frames between the Wellman and Secord families are numerous and include Brantford,Ontario- Ohio- Detroit,Michigan -Oakland County, Michigan- Washtenaw County,Michigan- and Shiawassee,County, Michigan.
Just learned a short while ago that Zadock was a captain of a small sailing vessel running the British blockades on the Great Lakes during the War of 1812,(see the Dobbins Papers of the Buffalo Hist. Society.)
I have tried to learn as much as I can about these two families so as to enable me to trace my own relationships with them further. It gets confusing as they move from state to state and from Ontario to Michigan and Ohio numerous times. The Wellmans cross the border frequently during the 1800s and seem like citizens of two countries.
Started to ramble on and do apologize, Thanks again,Bruce

Hi Pat,
We've corresponded quite a bit before on our common Secord line. It's been a good and helpful experience. I lost contact with the other Secord researchers whom I had been corresponding with and now it's been a while and I'm trying to get back on track of things with my memory. I'll be going through my records here shortly.

So to begin, I am a descendant of Isaac Secord Sr. of War of 1812 m. to Sarah Andrews. Isaac's military record states that he married Sarah ANDREWS. I want to make sure and am looking for documentation if possible, but according to your findings, did Isaac later have another wife named Sarah Wellman, or is she one in the same?
Someone had clarified to me that he had later married a Sarah Welman and I think maybe that I got this info through you, though not sure. Can you tell me?

Thanks so much,
Susan
Bruce,
Thanks for the detailed info. I was glad to get your response and interest to this matter in straightening some of this info out regarding this family line. I have very similar findings and looks like we've gleaned from the same records. As far as any hard findings, I'll have to look through my records, but I had been working with several of the descendants on the Secord research. One by the name of Pat Kelderman, I notice is on this board doing the same research, so we can get together with her and compare records. I do have a copy of an original military/pension record which states a Sarah ANDREWS married to Isaac Secord Oct 1811 in Burford, Ontario.

I have a William Z. Secord who is (by my memory) a son, I think is a brother (don't have my notes yet) to Isaac Secord, Jr. (my gg-grandfather).

I have been busy with work, but have more flexibility now that allows me to get some time to get back into this research. I would like to find out more and get things documented to iron out some of the confusion regarding how many Sarah's we have married to Isaac and which one to we each belong to. Like I mentioned, the Welman line goes way back and I am wondering if you have come acrossed it, yet.

Thanks so much for your findings on our common family line,

Susan

Would like to know your line of descent from Isaac Secord, Sr. As I recall right now, he had Marvil, Isaac, Joanna, and William Z. It seems like that Z stands for Zadock, like you've guessed.

Thank you for your response. I think am related to Zadock Wellman. A George William Wellman, probable son of Zadock is a ggggrandparent of mine. He lived in Michigan circa 1820 near Zadock Wellman and his sons. This was at a time in Michigan (Oakland County) history when the total population was just a few hundred people.Issac Secord also lived there at this time (voting records of the city of Pontiac),and later moved to Washtenaw County circa 1830 where he is a notable early settler(see Washtenaw County History). There is a story in this book of his "escape" from Canada during the War of 1812.
I have never seen any hard evidence for the identity of Issac's first two wives, althougth I belive there are biographies of his son Issac Z. and Marvil) that mention Sarah Wellman.Always curious if the Z. is for Zadock?
Always interested in learning more about any of these families. I know a little about Zadock, his sons, and their movements West from Connecticutt to eventually Michigan. It is often nirrored by Isaac Secord and his family after circa 1812 up to circa 1840 and involves Michigan,Ohio and Upper Canada, Oakland,Washtenaw Wayne and Shiawassee counties in Michigan. Also the area around Brantford in Ontario circa 1810. George Wellman married to Deborah Elizabeth Myers, son of Zadock, had a son born there about 1816.
Any info you can share would be greatly appreciated. If I can help answer any questions feel free to contact me.
Silas Secord/Mary Rice

Trying to wrap up a poser. Is Sgt. Silas Secord (c1755) the son of Peter Secord (1726)? If so, who was Silas' mother? Abigail Emmett or Rebecca Brown? Is Sgt. Silas the husband of Mary Rice...or Polly (unknown)? Is Mary Rice wife of Sgt. Silas the same person as Mary Rice wife of Solomon Edwin Secord? Which way is up?

Re: DR. SOLOMON SECORD, MD (20th Georgia, CSA)

Secord travelled to Georgia ca 1859-60 to get relief from his tuberculosis. He was outspoken as an abolitionist, young, and a little cocksure that there wouldn't be any problems. Instead, he found himself arrested; fortunately he'd made some influential friends.

By 1862 his was seeing field service with the 20th Ga. He was left at Gettysburg with unmovable wounded Confederates when Lee retreated, and a few weeks later, was a POW at Ft McHenry. Given extra liberty by the guards, he escaped to New York City, where friends helped him return to the South and service with the 20th Ga.

His health deteriorated in 1864, and he was assigned to hospital service rather than regimental duty. By all accounts he was an excellent surgeon.

Andrew Johnson
benningsbrigade@comcast.net
http://home.comcast.net/~benningsbrigade
