My name is Teresa - I live in Northern Virginia. My Seelinger family lived in Millwood Creek and surrounding area of Erie PA. They are buried at Trinity Cemetery and attended church at Sacred Heart. I have an obituary for my relative which indicates Eva Knoll is his sister. Hmmm...... So for awhile I've been trailing emails and notes on Eva trying to figure out the earlier origins. My relatives name is Joseph Seelinger b. 1823 in Germany/Rheinish/Bavaria - the census has lots of different notes in this regard. I've been wondering about the family for a very, very long time. I don't have anything conclusive prior to his family coming to PA in 1850-51. I will save going on any further here and just let you (if you will) get back if you have any interest in helping me.

Thank you very much,
Teresa

My grandparents were Nicholas Seelinger and Regina Seelinger from Rulzheim. Nicholas's first wife was Magdalena and I don't know anything about her. All three are buried in Calvary in Erie as is my dad (Otto 1928-1975), his brother William (~1932-2009), and my sister Mary Theresa (1982). If Nicholas or Regina are in your tree, I can provide a little more info on them.

Yes, it's very addictive and can grow into a monstrosity if not managed. I hated the idea of having to document all of my families in a tree but it has indeed helped to keep things straight. I begin to focus on where the hits are coming from, so if I get one on my mom's side I spend a good deal of time on it before things get dry, then move to another family. Sometimes now it's hard to keep the dates and events straight.

I live in Virginia and we don't normally get to that area. With google maps and satellite capabilities we can see the areas we need to first hand. Most of the time the locations are redeveloped. The churches are my primary focus now and yes, maybe I'll get up to the ones in Erie for hopefully more info. Joseph is in Trinity too. Along with someone who I think is his sister Margaret Theresia, then Eva. I'm not sure about the others, Henry, Frederic, Balthasaur. But they lived close to the water and had saloons, I think Jos. had a brewery on State or Peach St. at some time. Maybe a photo of that exists.

Aw. Well, great then, thanks for the reply - got to get back to the day.

Please take care and keep in touch!

Theresa,

I love working on genealogy! It's fun to solve the mysteries that pop up and fit the pieces of the puzzle together :) From what I have read in the obituaries of the Knolls they were indeed a very respectable family in Erie. I have across some very interesting tid bits within their obituaries. It's neat stuff! I have many many Knoll obituaries I have printed off at the library here in Erie. If there are any that you are related that you would like to have a copy of let me know and I can scan them into a PDF and send them to you via e-mail. Also, I'm not sure where you are from but if it's not local (I am in the Erie area) and there is a certain obit or something you would like from the microfilm at the library let me know and I can try to get it for you even if it's a different family from the Knolls. The only Seelinger I looked into was Eva and it wasn't much (just the basics). She isn't in my direct line, kind of just a "shirt tail" relation. Her husband is the brother of my great gr gr gr gr gr grandfather. So I haven't done any Seelinger research. If I do find some stuff on them I can let you know. That would be neat if Joseph was involved in the oil industry in the area. There's a lot of good history in that!

As far as the Knolls being Catholic...I don't really know how to answer. It seems that some were and some weren't. It has been made apparent to me that they were a "Catholic family" per se given that some of their obits showed the funerals being at protestant churches or not at a church at all. It does seem that some were very devout Catholics though. If I had to guess I would say they were probably dominantly Catholic, but I could be wrong on that. Quite a few of them are burried in the 2 big Catholic cemeteries here in Erie (Trinity and Calvary). Another part to my genealogy project has been going around and taking pics of all the headstones. I have TONS of those too! There are some Knolls burried in Erie Cemetery as well and a few in other lesser known cemeteries. There was a Knoll (in the more later generations) who was a priest. As a Catholic, that sparked some interest for me but I didn't find much info other than his obituary.

As I said, let me know if there is anything i can do to help you with your search for Seelingers or Knolls or whoever.

Abby

Abby,
It's very nice of you to reply. I would bet that too. :) Oh, the mystery. I here the Knoll's were a very respectable family and well known. I read that Jos. Seelinger had some businesses in Erie and his hands in the oil stuff going on in Titusville. They were catholic. Were the Knoll's a catholic family?

Thank you and if you still do research and come across the name I hope you'll let me know. Maybe I can get up to Erie and do some local research one day.

Best regards,
Teresa

Frank,

Jacob Knolls brother is my great grandfather (6 generations back). I too believe that some of the children fell victim to an illness that was around. I have pictures of the gravestones of Jacobs family at Trinity Cemetery in Erie, PA.
There are a few of Jacob and Mary's children that I don't have much information on. I was wondering if you might be able to provide more.
-Bertha Knoll born about 1868. I don't have a death date or if she ever married.
-Rachel Knoll born about 1870. Did she marry? When did she pass away?
-Amanda Knoll 1858-1935- Married? Children?

Thanks

Abby
Teresa,

I have an Eva Seelinger in my tree. I am directly related to Knolls and have much more on them than I do Seelinger. I have 1833 as a birth year for Eva. She married Jacob K. Knoll and they lived in Erie. I would venture to guess if your obit says that Joseph Frank Seelingers sister was Mrs. Jacob Knoll that it probably is Eva. Sorry I can't be of more help to you. This is all I have.

Abby

I am researching Seelinger family of Erie PA who arrived in 1850. Frank Joseph Seelinger 1823 M. Elizabeth Stemmer (or Steiner). Their son Joseph Seelinger of Norfolk VA is my GGgrandfather. I can't find much on him, think he was buried at Trinity Cemetery. He was a liquor distributor/brewery owner. He may have had a sister named Eva Seelinger (m. Jacob Knoll) and brothers Thomas, Bolty.

Hi Frank, well we are probably related. I believe my Joseph Frank Seelinger was Eva's brother. He was born around 1823, she was later. His obit in Erie says his sister was Mrs. Jacob Knoll. Wondered if you could check anything you have that might confirm it. If so would love any further info available. He would be my GGGGgrandfather from Germany. Would love to confirm his Berne Germany origins. She is listed as Baden so I am interested to validate connection.

Revision: I believe there were a few other siblings in the area as well, perhaps a Thomas and a Balthasar or Bolty who also had businesses.

Teresa Adnan

Hi Frank, well we are probably related. I believe my Joseph Frank Seelinger was Eva's brother. He was born around 1822, she was later.

Teresa Adnan

Hello Frank. I too am doing research on Jacob Knoll and Eva Seelinger. They were my great grandparents on my mothers side. According to my records, Jacob was born in Herxheim, Germany,11-5-1828,son of Urban Knoll and Margurite Lehat. There were 2 other children-Francis and Barbara. The family emigrated to the U.S. about 1837.

I show Jacob and Eva having 7 children:
Edward,Born 7-7-1880
Died 2-15-1923
Anna M. Born 12-15-1873
Died 9-20-1910
This info from marriage license
to Harry Gray Smith. She was my
grandmother.

Anna Catharina Born 12-15-1872
This info came from baptismal
records of St. Joseph Catholic
Church in Erie, Pa.
According to a Knoll history found at the Erie County Historical Society prepared by a George J. Knoll in 1982 the following were listed as children of Jacob and Eva :
Joseph - Georg - Victor - Regina
I have no info regarding these 4.
I hope this info will be of some value to you. Please stay in touch, and I will be most happy to share any further info with you.

Dick Yoo

Seelinger Family

My Grandfather was Nicholas Seelinger and married to Magdelena (Lena) Bierstoffer. Arrived in the states around 1867 at age around 5. Lena arrived around 1861 about the same age. They lived in Ohio where my Mother Mathilda was born 1898 and her brother was Michael was born in 1892 (?). They moved to Erie Pa at some later time Maybe around 1910 (according to census. Lena died and Regina Seelinger (mother Maria Losch and father Jacob Seelinger who may have been Nicholas' brother) Came to nurse Lena but arrived too late. This was in late 1920s. My mother said Regina was a cousin, which I believe makes Nicholas Reginas Uncle. They were married and had two Children Otto and William. Otto died at an early age, but William is about 70 still lives in Erie. My Grandfather Nicholas must have been brought here with relatives because at his young age would have been too little to travel alone. I remember my mother talking about an aunt and uncle by name of Castella (or a name that sounds like that) and visiting cousins named Wienkammer in Warren Ohio. Not sure about spelling. Hope this may aid both of us in tracking the Seelingers.

I don't have any information before 1870. Nicholas Seelenger was adopted by Johannes Seelinger. Nicholas was the son of Margaretha Loesch who married Johannes.
I have a Johan Loesch, his son Jacob Loesch married Catharina Schranz. Their daughter was Margaretha (who Married Johannes.

Nicholas (Seelinger) married Lena Bierstoffer and had 2 children Mathilda (my mother) and Michael. Lena (Magdalena) born 1863 D. 1926 had a sister in the US a Mrs Fred Links, and a brother Jacob. They are record attending her funeral. Nicholas and Lena lived in Ohio where Michael was born, and Mathilda was born in Penna. Probably Erie or Erie County.

Nicholas Married Regina Seelinger Her mother was Maria Loesch and her father was I believe Regina,s father was Jacob Seelinger...The names being so much the same leads me to believe that Nicholas married his niece or cousin.
Nicholas had two children. Otto and William...William never married and lives in Erie. William B 1930 Otto b 1928 D1976 Otto married Louise ? and has 4 living children
Paul, Donald, and Gerald. and Mary I believe a daughter died.
Nicholas and Regina are from Ruzeheim I don't know where Magdelena was born in Germany. Perhaps Albersweiler or Gleisweiler.
I got a lot of this information from Celesteprichard@attglobal.net. You would find a lot of her correspondence on Seelingers....She is very knowledgeable
I was in Salt Lake city last year and tried to find out more, but was not very successful. where are you located? I live in California, but have many many cousins in Erie PA. Michael had 11 children.

Nicholas remarried Regina Seelinger 1897 - 1982

My grandfather was Nicholas Seelinger May 1870 d 1944 married to Magldelena Bierstoffer. 1863 d1926 His father was Johannes Seelinger Jan 13 d 1874 and mother was Margaret Loesch. Margaret was the daughter of Johann Jacob Loesch and Catharina Schranz.
and Johan Jacob was the son of Anna Maria Seelinger. that is as far back as I have. and the only dates
Nicholas and Magdelena had a daughter Mathilda (my mother
May 18, 1898 d 1988 and a son Michael 1892 d 1958 Nicholas then married Regina Seelinger 1897 d 1982 Her father was also a Seelinger and her mother a Loesch
Regina and Nicholas had 2 sons Otto and William William is still living in Erie Pa and never married. I have more information...My Seelingers seem to be all from Penna and Ohio. I don't know if Nicholas had brothers or sisters. Magdelena had a brother and a sister but I can't find any information on them yet....Maybe there is a connection...the names Kastella and Weinkammer from Ohio are also mentioned as relatives, but there again I have not been able to trace them....
Good Folks - It looks like my brach of the family may be a different line, but let me try. My great grandfather, Philip Fredrick Seelinger, entered the US from Germany in about 1840 and settled in Indiana. He in turn had a large family. My question: I don't know if he had any brothers, for example, who may have come to the US, so if any of you folks know of my line and can give me information, I would appreciate it.

Thank you.

Hope I am not too late. Philip M Seelinger would have been my great uncle. One of his brothers was my grandfather, Omer D. Philip's father was Philip Frederick (or "h") Seelinger, born 24 Dec 1820 in Germany and his mother was Katherine (or Catherine) Miller, born 27 Oct 1825 in Alsace Lorriane. Philip M was born 13 Jan 1845, in Versailles (Ripley) IN, died 31 Dec 1935 in Holton (Ripley) IN. He was married 5 Mar 1877 to Julia A Bradt (I, too, have two spellings) in Morley(?) (Mecosta) MI.

Clearly, these two Philip's are my namesake.

Please share any and all information that you may have found on the Seelinger family.

Thanks, Phil
