Re: SEGRAVES' in IRELAND

My ancestor, John (wf Catherine) came to Albany, NY in the 1840's, from somewhere in Ireland. The Segrave family name is derived from the place in England in which they lived before coming to Ireland, before 1300. The original English settlers in Ireland who became known as Segrave were not actually related to one another, they were just people from the same town. Spellings include Sedgrave, Seagrave, Seagraves, Segraves, and a host of other possibilities. Always check for names beginning with "L" as I found one census for mine, under "Legrane."

My Segraves were in Albany, New York by the mid-1840's. Two of them died in the cholera pandemic of 1849; survivors include James, John, Christopher and William. Ann may have been their mother; I assume the Jhon who died in 1849 may have been the boys' father, and that the James who also died of cholera was also related. We never have had many Segraves in Albany. They were Catholic; pillars of the Irish Catholic church. I have lots on the history of Segraves in Ireland, through Cromwell, and have perused "The Segrave Family -1066-1936" at the New York Public Library. Some members of the family lived in New York City and Brooklyn, and I have been in contact with a relative there. She says John Segrave was born in New Barn, but I don't know the source of that info. I travelled to Ireland last year, and visited Ardee, where my Devine/O'Hara ancestors were born, but didn't know just where to look for the Segraves. Hard to connect between our two countries around the time of the Great Hunger. Maybe you can tell me what to do next. Thanks for listening. Pat

I am currently researching my ancestry and have drawn a blank beyond a distant relation (Christopher Segrave/Seagrave). His marriage certificate states his father as Michael Segrave but I am doubtful that this is the same Michael you list. However, I wondered if your reserdch had found a Christopher who moved to England possibly late 1860's to early 1871 (the first record I have found: Marriage and birth of daughter Bridget (to mother Mary Riley - possibly Reilley). It is possible he moved due to the iron industry and is listed as born in Kings Court Meath. Any information would be of use even if just to exclude any family connection for my research. Many thanks. Andrew Local (Chester-le-Street: County Durham, England)

John Segrave may have died before the 1841 census was taken. A correction to the original entry is that John was married to Sarah Ann (Unknown), & Sam,uel ,arried Mary Ann Bell in Australia. Samuel died 1901 in Melbourne Australia. An entry in the 1841 census indicates there nmay have been an elder son, Chaerles, born to John and Sarah Ann Segrave.Any further info about this family appreciated.
Thanks.
Denise

He was the father of Sir Henry Segrave, of racing fame c. 1916, of the Dublin (Cabragh) Segrave branch. I believe the LDS library has one, and I know the New York Public Library has one. There are some private owners - I believe I saw an offer for a look up on a Segrave genealogy message board just yesterday.

vb -
If you are still looking for the parents of John Segrave of Leicestershire, you can find practically the whole family tree in Burke's Peerage, Burke's Gentry, Burke's Landed Gentry in Ireland, etc. His parents were John de Segrave and Juliana Sandwic, his parents were John de Segrave (2nd Baron Segrave) and Christian Plessitis, and his parents were the very famous 1st Baron Segrave, Nicholas, and his wife Maud de Lucy. His parents are Gilbert de Segrave, Lord Segrave, and Ambilia de Chaucomb, and his parents are Stephen de Segrave and Rodesia de Spencer, and his parents are Gilbert de Segrave, Lord Segrave, and from here we don't have their wives names (they weren't considered to be important), but his father was Hereward, and his father was Hugh or Hugo, and his father was Thomas, who was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1080. Beyond that, is prehistory.

Re: Segrave family

Hi Sally,

I've been doing extensive research into the origins of the Southern Segrave/Seagraves family. Francis and Lucretia Segrave of Isle of Wight, VA and later NC are the earliest American ancestors of this line (they had quite a few children, and my branch is descended from their son William Powell Segrave).
If you go directly to the source, you will find in the King James's Army List by D'Alton (the source many of the others used, including Charles W. Segrave, although he misinterpreted what he read there) a little segment on Captain Francis Segrave, among some Segrave cousins, in Maurice Eustace's Infantry, who was attainted of his lands (had them confiscated by the crown) in Rosberry and Friarstown, County Kildare, in 1691. He shows up in Isle of Wight, VA, in the records in 1694. William Powell Segrave was born after that. Lucretia Powell shows up in the records in Isle of Wight, VA in the 1680s in the will of her father, Nathaniel Powell, and her mother, Lucretia, as one of his heirs, a descendant of the early Virginia governor family.
The spelling of the family name changed sometime shortly after William Powell's generation to the current Seagraves. If you Google the spelling Segrave you will be amazed at what you will find. And yes, that's us! (smile)

No one has yet located any emigration records, passenger records, or anything indicating where exactly Francis sailed from before arriving in Isle of Wight, Virginia. Likewise his parents and marriage have proved incredibly elusive, but we know from various sources that he is descended from the Segraves of Killeglan, County Meath, in Ireland, and they are descended by way of Sir Peter who was sent to Ireland (Burke's Peerage, etc.) in 1320 from the Barons Segrave in Leicestershire, England. Research is continuing!

Deanna

I'm looking for any info on John Henry Segrave. I have a Masonic Knights Templar ceremonial sword with his name engraved on it. It's very elaborate and has an ivory handle. Pettis & Co. Troy, NY (engraved on back of sword blade). Some info that I found online: J.R. Pettis is listed in the 1866 Troy, New York City Directory under Hats, Caps and Furs at 374 River.
Any info about the sword or John Segrave would be helpful. I would be interested in finding any ancestors. Thanks!

Did you ever get a response to your email? I am just starting to research the Seagrave family of Arundel - but my Seagrave interest starts in late 1800's.

John Segrave whom you ask about is on a family tree that is printed in a tourist book that I purchased when I visited Arundel Castle in June 2004. It appears they had no sons and so Arundel Castle went to the Mobray family, then to Howard, and later Fitzalan-Howard.

Hi Anthony,
Thanks again! That's wonderful to have his portrait. He must have known the Power family in Dublin.
Were the Segraves R.C.? Do you know which parish church?
Did I read somewhere that he was in the military in Dublin?
My g-g-grandmother married sometime before 1845 to James Rourke, who was in the military and ended up living at the barracks in Charlemont, Armagh. They had sons Richard, John, James Joseph, and James Michael Joseph and daughter Rosina. They left Ireland by 1848 and never returned, so lost track of family there.
I would love to find anything furthere on the Power family of Dublin.
Thanks again!
Deborah
Hi Anthony,
I just re-read your message and realized that I didn't read it correctly. Please disregard my message. Is that all of your family history in Ireland? Does it help you to connect with
relatives here in the US? My great-grandparents are from
Ireland.Their names were- Robert Segrave and Mary Grimley-Segrave.I think that Robert was born around 1857, and Mary
was around 1865. I really don't have much information about
them. My grandparents were Christopher Segrave and Margaret Callahan-Segrave and they lived by Hoboken,NJ
If by some chance any of this rings a bell would you please let me know.
Thank you
Judy Yurenda
PS sorry about the mistake.

Becky, My data base includes a Josephine Seagrave who was born in Indiana 28 July 1902 to Ora O. Seagrave and Hessie Beaman. The source for this information is: "Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy", Vol VII Part 3 page 427.
The source also says that this Josephine died 29 June 1952. The source gives no locations for either event and does not say if Josephine ever married. Her parents were living in Blackford Co., IN at the 1900 census, so it is likely that Joesphine was born there.
This is sketchy, but it's all I have on the lady. If you are interested in more ancestry on her family, let me know.

With some help I've been able to track My Grandmother, MAUD DAVENPORT, {born in England} side of the family back 5 and 6 generations, but have run into a real stumbling block with the Segraves born in Ireland.
I would be great to exchange any information we might have, I'm afraid I don't have much to go on except his Birth Country, and his birth year, 1820. His son, John Segrave , married Margaret Vitty in 1876, in Castle Ward, Northumberland. In 1907 John Segrave and his son Thomas {my grandfather } came to the U.S., i have found their passage on line.
Again THANK-You So Much !!!!!!!!!!!
I'll be in touch
Judy

Hi,
Just thought I would add something to all of David's information. In case your ancestor was from Skerries, the Catholic Church there has a web site. It has a guest book where you can leave a message with your research details, and someone may reply. You can also ask Father Coughlan to do some looking up for you and he will - he did for me! There were quite a few Seagraves in the north County Dublin area. My families are also from this area, and if you find yours are too, contact me again and I can give you a few more details. The web site address is:
http://www.skerries.dublindiocese.ie/
Good luck!
Gaye

Hi - the 1891 census is not indexed alphabetically so you need to supply an address. Have you tried www.ellisisland.org for immigration details. It covers to about 1905
