A little more about the DNA discussed in the private post:
My first cousin,a SEIBEL, did Y-chromosome testing a few years ago so my branch of the Seibel family has "our" Y-chromosome documented with FamilyTreeDNA.com, the premier group associated both with Jewish Genealogy and with the National Geographic Society (you might have heard of it through that association). I also asked the Brazilian branch of Seibels to participate. Such testing would be a sure way to determine if your family has Jewish roots.
Roni
It's hard for me to know because the given names are not typical Jewish names. One way to determine it is by DNA. I already had a male SEIBEL cousin participate and am trying to get a SEIBEL cousin in Brazil to send in the mouth swabs already(we are fairly certain we are related but would like to confirm this). It has to be a male with the surname SEIBEL going back, ie must be the male genetic line. If you think you might be interested, I can send you links to the DNA organization. Are there any other clues that they may have been Jewish at one time?

Hi Gail,
I do not know if we are related, but I have 2 records that must belong to your family. One is the birth of Chaje Drix in 1889. Parents are Abraham and Frymet. Town in "Glina" on the record which had other spellings and is not far from Lviv.
The other is the 1891 birth of Rafel Driks (spellings were not consistant on records especially since it was from the Yiddish). Parents were Frimet Seibel and Abraham Driks. The name Chancre Seibel is also in the record but I have not translated it all yet. The town is Pustomyty also near Lviv.
I would love to pursue this further. I can send you my family website. Please contact me via my e-mail Roni19@optonline.net. I also live in NY. Where are you in NY? I have company for the holiday, but will get back to you as soon as I can. Roni
I am trying to determine whether the Seibels in my family were Jewish. My mother's maternal grandfather was Anton Seibel of Lwow who served in the Great War. He married a Ukrainian woman by the name of Anna Bobelak. They were well off and lived in a large farmhouse and had servants. One of his daughters Stanislawa Seibel is my maternal grandmother. She became pregnant by a German man my grandfather, Aloys Hermann and married him. Their son Waldimar died of diptheria in 1940. My mother Gisela Hermann was born in 1940, her sisters Ingeborg(Ann) in 1942 and Elona in 1944(?) We believe Elona died shortly after she was born when the hospital she was in was bombed. We cannot find any records of our Seibel ancestors and believe that they may have deliberately been destroyed as the family attempted to pass themselves off as Poles. If you can help me at all or know anything of the Seibels of Lwow during this time please contact me.

Hi Laurie,
How wonderful that you are starting this research at your age. Seems to be something most of us do when it is too late to ask our grandparents questions. My maiden name is SEIBEL. I have a family website. Please take a look at the SEIBEL branch on the site and let me know if you see any connections. We know a few who are in the VA area. You won't be able to see information about living people (ie the dates of vital events) because only family members get to see that after registering. However, you will be able to see photos and names (except for one branch that asked to remain "private"). The url is http://x.liebowitzes.com/genealogy/
Do a search on SEIBEL.
The oldest SEIBEL listed there is Yecheskal Seibel who is Moshe Zvi and Yitzhak Yosef's father(we think). You can do a drop chart starting with him.
Although these are all Jewish Seibels, there is a family story that a generation of 8 brothers existed and 4 (Avram Moshe, Mendel (my great gf), Hersch Melech, and Shlomo)remained Jewish, but the other 4 converted to Christianity. We would love to find descendants of those other 4...we don't have their names.
Family came from Poland and what was Galicia, plus I think also the Ukraine.
Look forward to hearing from you. By the way, we have many Charels and Josephs in the family.
Best
Roni Seibel Liebowitz

Thanks for your response with all the wonderful information. I am elated! This is great! Do you know anything/history about Gustav and Anna. I can't find any social security info. on Gustav following his death. The information I have is basically through census info., draft records and so on. I do have post cards, a few letters, etc. that my grandfather, Joseph Vang, had kept from his wife (my grandmother) Carrie Seibel who died at age 39 in 1936. Any info on who they were, what their life was like, etc. I was wondering what made them move to Corning, NY. That is where Joseph met and married Carrie. I would be glad to make you copies of the family stuff I have - do you have any family info. Any info on any of their children, etc. would be appreciated. Why did they move to California. I know Gustav was a pattern maker. My name is Carrie (named after my grandmother:) I was born and raised in Corning, NY. This adventure of discovering my relatives is so rewarding. I am delighted that I have made contact with relative. Thanks, again!

How wonderful. Yes this is the same family. My cousin remembers that when her father died in 1913 her mother contacted her Aunt who had married a Hubscher. But she lost contact with the family. Now 94 years later, my 99 year old cousin has found a Seibel Cousin. She will be thrilled.
I am the great grandson of Charles Frederick Seibel (1854-1935), the Cigarmaker married to Magdalena Frank. Charles lived a very full life, and had three wives, the first of which was Magdalena. My grandmother, Anna (1878-1970), was Charles' first daughter. Other siblings were John H. (1876-1913), Charles (1874-); and perhaps two others, one male and one female. Charles also had a daughter, Eva L. Wilson nee Seibel (1889-1974), who was born in Connecticut to his second wife. I would be happy to speak with other relatives or exchange information on this family.

My SEIBELs were Jewish. They came from what was Galicia: Lviv/Lwow, Tarnobrzeg, Grebow, Rozwadow as well as nearby towns in Poland: Klimontow, Konary, Nadbrzezie and others. There is a family rumor that my great grandfather, Yitzhak Yosef (born ca 1825), had 8 sons, 4 who remained Jewish: Avram Moshe, Mendel, Hersch Melech, Shlomo and 4 others who converted. I would like to know about these 4. I have a great deal of info about those who remained Jewish. On my immediate line, my great grandfather Mendel left Poland in 1905 and settled in New York. Found relatives in US, Canada, Brazil, & Warsaw. Have a DNA Seibel project already started.
