Lorenz Seuffert

Hello,

I'm wondering if anybody is researching the Seuffert surname...? Specifically, I am searching for information on my g.g.g. grandfather Lorenz Seuffert (Americanized spelling variations "Lawrence Seiffert/Seifert") who was born 6 Jan. 1834 in Bavaria, Germany.

As far as I know, he immigrated to Ohio before 1854, to farm. He married Anna Schmitt (1831-1908), daughter of Casper Schmitt (1803-1887) and Johanna Anna Ziegler (1807-1883), in Cleavland, Ohio in 1854. They later moved to Illinois and finally to Poyner, Black Hawk, Iowa. Lorenz and Anna had the following children: John (b.1856), Sophia (b.1859), Lena (b.1864), Helena (b.1866), Caroline (b.1867), Clara and Ludwieka (both b.1869). Lorenz owned a flour and feed store in Burlington, Iowa in the 1890's. He passed away 30 Jan. 1895 and is buried at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa.

I am trying to find out who his parents were as this is the furthest generation of Seuffert's I've been able to trace. I have a hunch that Lorenz's mother lived in Freeport, Illinois, but I have not been able to substantiate this. If anyone has information on this family, I would be very happy to connect with you.

Thank you,
Oona Seuffert Orr

This is very interesting. I just learned that my gr-gr-gr grandfather, Frederick John Seiffert, was born in Brandenburg, Prussia in about 1781 and was in the army (lived most of his life in the UK.) I just received his Registration of Death a few weeks ago, and it stated his occupation as being "Musician." It would be great to be able to find a connection between this Seiffert and your Seifferts.

Roger

I recently received the DC for my GGM, Anna Seiffert. She was born in Beeskow, Brandenburg, Prussia in 1853 and her father was Friedrich William Seiffert.

Family lore says that the Seiffert family was well known in Germany and that Anna's father (now I finally know his name!) was a noted musician and conductor, and that one of her brothers, Franz, was a composer.

How should I try to follow this line of research? What sources should I pursue?
Paul A. Seiffert

I am trying to locate the ancestors of Paul A. Seiffert. He worked as a photographer in Orofino, Idaho, and died in a boat explosion around Coos Bay, Oregon around 1941. He was married to Bertha. On a census, he said he came to the U.S. in 1909. The only passenger lists I can find for him were for a Martha, Paul and Maria Seiffert in 1893, destination, Montreal. I have a WWI registration card for Paul Wilhelm Ferdinand August Seiffert b. 11 Jan, 1888. The 1920 census has Paul W. Seeferrt (the right age). Can anyone give me advice on this individual? Thanks for your help. My e-mail is tmmcgarv@clearwire.net

Ambrose H. Seiffert of Penn.
Ambrose H. Seiffert

Ambrose H. Seiffert, general accountant for the firm of Baugher, Kurtz & Stewart, was born in Dover Township, York County, December 1, 1838, and is the second in a family of seven children born to John and Elizabeth (Henise) Seiffert, of German descent. The parents of Mr. Seiffert were born in Dover Township, where they now reside. His paternal grandfather was John Seiffert, a native of Pennsylvania, but in 1833 he moved to Ohio, where he died. The boyhood of our subject was spent on the farm. He was educated at the public schools of Dover Township and York County Academy. In 1857 he began teaching school, at which he continued until 1872, when he accepted his present position. He was married in 1865 to Miss. Mary A. Daron, a native of Manchester Township, born June 9, 1845, and daughter of George and Lydia Daron. They have four children: John H., George R., Franklin M. and Maggie M. Mr. Seiffert is an earnest supporter of the Democratic party. In 1883 he was elected to represent the Fifth Ward in the borough council, and re-elected in 1885, and upon the organization of the council was chosen assistant chief burgess for the ensuing year. Mr. And Mrs. Seiffert are members of the German Reformed Church.

Taken from the book, “History of York County, Illustrated 1886” by John Gibson, Historical Editor

Hi Robin. I'm of Klukas descent and as I was researching through Klukas, I found mention of your relative, Charlotte Klukas. Unfortunately, it's not much but does confirm the marriage between Samuel and Charlotte. They were married on Nov. 16, 1878 probably in the area of Volhynia, what is now either in the Ukraine or Russia. Check out the site www.sggee.org They might also have info on Samuel. I believe in this record they spelt the surname Seifert. Hope this helps. If you can give me any info on Klukas you may have come across, that would be great.

You talk about Westafallon, and I think you mean WESTFALEN which is the area around Cologne/Koeln and some 1000 km west of Silesia. Seiffert si a very common name in Germany, it means hand-wash-maker.
