Looking for information on Sgt. George Sergeant who served in the 2nd Regiment of York Militia during the War of 1812. He would have been living in one of several townships along the western shore of Lake Ontario. I have militia records from 1814 but no family history at this time.

OBIT Joseph Sargeant Sergeant 1921 Philadelphia PA father of David and Robert

From the Philadelphia Inquirer dated 05 Sep 1921:

JOSEPH SERGEANT
--------------------

Civil War Veteran Had Served Municipality for 40 Years

Joseph Sargeant, City Hall guard, in the service of the municipality in various departments for forty years, died at his home at 2011 Catherine street yesterday. Sargeant, who was 79 years old, served in the Civil War. He had been a City Hall guard since 1907, and prior to that time worked on one of the city's ice boats.

Death was due to a complication of diseases, following an attack of gastritis. Sargeant had just returned to work after his vacation when he was forced to lay off again on August 30. He is survived by two sons, Robert, employed in the Electrical Bureau, and David, a policeman in the Twentieth and Fitzwater streets station.

Please note: Two spellings are used within the obituary for this wonderful hero's surname. Sergeant and Sargeant.

I am not related to the deceased.

My ggggrandfather, David M. McCaslin was married to a Rachel Sargent around 1828 in Indiana. They settled in Crawford County, Arkansas and they are buried at the Morrison Cemetery in Rudy, AR. Perhaps she is a daughter of Robert and Rachel. I am looking for information on our Rachel Sargent's parents. The marriage of our David and Rachel are not consistent with the dates you have posted, but this may be worth looking into.

My grandfather was Samuel Seargeant, born Tullylish, Co. Down. N Ireland. 1891. I have a letter to him, from a brother, saying their grandfather, born c1820, came from Ballinasloe, Galway. His name was William Sergeant. I have searhed all Irish records and can only find one William Sergeant, born in Knockanour, Turlough, Co Mayo, 02/12/1821, son of William and Anne, Church of Ireland. Is this the William you refer to? Most of my family are in Ontario, Canada, though I was born in Ireland. I would like information about the move from west Ireland to N Ireland in the late 1840's.

Samuel Sergeant (1854), Yorks to Canada to New Jersey

I would be delighted to hear from you if are connected to or have information relating to Samuel SERGEANT or any members of his family. Samuel was born in 1854, Hunsingore, Yorkshire. He was a son of Charles and Ellen (nee Cutforth) Sergeant. (I am a gg-granddaughter.)

I have information regarding his life in the UK. I know that the family emigrated to Winnipeg, Canada. They then moved to the Galloway Township, New Jersey (family found on 1930 US census).

By 1930 the family looked like this:

Samuel
Effie (nee Blackburn) born 1879 Yorkshire. This was Samuel’s second marriage, and took place in 1909 in Selby, Yorkshire. His first wife Margaret died in 1905.
Children:
Sidney born 1912 Selby district, Yorks
Richard born 1913 Selby district, Yorks
Harold born 1915 Selby district, Yorks
Mary born 1918 Winnipeg
Charles born 1921 Winnipeg

It is my understanding that Samuel died in the early 1940s in the New Jersey area and Effie died in the early 1950s.

Thanks

Pip
I'm having trouble tracing my Sargeant's (or Sargents, or whatever)

My Grandmother is Elsie May Sargeant born 1905 in Berkshire (we think) I cannot find her birth anywhere.
She died in Winchester Hampshire in 1956 aged 51 years.

She married Herbert Henry Dyer in 1931 in Pangbourne, Berkshire. By 1933 they had moved to Andover, Hampshire.

All I have is her marriage certificate which gives the above info, plus her fathers name as William John.

I found a William John on the 1901 Census born 1878,
Ringwood Hampshire but I have no way of connecting them as yet; other than my mum thinking ringwood may be where they visited her grandparents when she was very young.

They (Elsie and Herbert), had three children - Nora, Leonard, and Joyce
between 1933 and 1936.

(plus there is a rumoured elder mysterious 'missing' sister Phyllis - but we don't know which if either of the two she 'belonged' to)

Anyone think there may be a connection - or have any knowledge - please reply or send me an email! I tried 1871 but not a lot of help as to her parents as she is a visitor (suspect relative but this doesn't help much). Birth index is more use: try ordering a certificate for Rhoda Jane Sergeant b. 1861 Q1 Lincoln 7a 416. A good few miles from my Sergeants in Marsh Chapel but you never know.

Cheers - Ian.

George, I see your posting was some time ago, but I wonder if you are still researching the Sergeant family. If so there may be a connection between our trees, though not between us personally. My great great aunt, Eva Johnson, married Gladstone Sergeant in Hull, Yorkshire, in 1915. Gladstone was the son of Harry and Hannah Sergeant. They had at least 5 children, one of whom, Vera, was born in Witherensea in 1897. Gladstone was born in Welwick, which is pretty close. Do you think there may be a connection? Would be very interested to hear from you if you think so.

Sargeant of Morris Co., NJ

Does anyone have information on Sargeants who
lived in Morris Co.,NJ prior to 1800? My ggg grand-
parents named their first son Phineas Sargeant Spaulding. My ggg grandmother was a Tichenor and her father was
from Morris Co. NJ and there are records of marriages
between Tichenors and Sergeants. I am trying to get a
handle on my ggg grandmother's family. If you have any
info, I would appreciate it very much.

Karl MacEachron
Fresno, CA
