Yes us sewell's continue to research as there seems to be many open slots to fill. One gets one generation but then a stray person doesn't get updated. I am a 4th great granddaughter to Dominicus 1734. I do have much info but still need more.
James Marion Sewell is my 2nd great grandfather. James has two sisters; Laura born about 1866 and Carrie born abt 1868.

If you have any information on the girls I am very interested. James died 1 April 1951 in Boulder,Boulder, Colorado. He was married to Mary Ellen Bangle. They were married on 18 Jul 1891 in Nebraska City, Otoe, Nebraska.

James was my mothers favorite person. She use to tell me that James once rode with the Buffalo Bill Show. In his older days he would refer to everyone as Bill. He would tell my mother stories about living on the plains. The only story I recall is the one where he's young and the family had to hide in the corn field while the house was being burned by the local tribe in that area.

I wish my mother could remember more of the stories he told her. Don't know if they were true but as a child I enjoyed hearing about my gg grandfather Jim.

email me if you have any questions - would be happy to exchange info. I like to know more about Sarah Galbreath.

My email is WL113@hotmail.com (all lower case)

Thanks - Walter

I do not know which sources you have checked. There are several books that have misinformation. They have confused the Sewall/Sewell family of Coventry to Mass. & Maine with our Seawell/Sowell/Sewell family of Northern VA to Maryland. I have learned to check as many sources as I can find to verify information. Good luck hunting ancestors.

Alice Willoughby and have just discovered from reading here that the parents I had for him are wrong. I'm a little confused, reading this string, on his ancestry.
The Y-DNA test results could tell whether there is a link between your Coventry Sewalls and one of the two branches of the one Sewall family from Coventry known to have living ancestors.

Keep in mind the reason tests are done is because the results and conclusions are not known prior to the test.

If your family is connected, the loss of records could mean that the names of the people who connect the families might never be known.

The Y-DNA test could show a connection to a completely different Sewall or Sewell family.

The only way to find out is to do the test. Few, if any of the Sewall or Sewell families in the FTDNA database have documented links back to England or Ireland, 'though probably all originated there.

Your Sewall family has a good link to County Clare and a link by family tradition to Coventry, Warwickshire. Good luck in rousing interest in the test !

Eben

Lest we forget the obvious. The Ulster Plantation in Ireland which commenced early 1600's planted not just Scots but a significant number of English as well. As the English put in trade embargos in Ulster for being more prosperous than England during the 1700's, many of the planters moved to other environs in Ireland and began immigrating to the American Colonies. Those who remained in Ireland for awhile longer began another wave of immigration to the United States, Canada, and Australia during the 1800's. It is entirely possible that a Sewell/Shewel of Coventry who did not immigrate out of England to the Colonies may have immigrated to Ireland. With out know who all those Sewell may have been and knowing only the direct lineage ancestors of some, seems to close the door on the possibilities that there were either other related families and/or other Sewell by surname in the immediate area of Coventry at the same time.

Do you have a male member by surname who may be able to DNA test???

Thank you so much for the information.

All I have to go on is the death certificate of John Sewell which states his birth as Clare, Ireland, and his parents, William Sewell and Jane Stevens, as being born in England. Whether they were from Coventry or not, I do not know.

The other piece I have is a family letter of Rev. William George Sewell, descended from Edward Sewell, who lived in Saint John, NB and was born in Ireland around the same time as John Sewell, likely his brother. He states that the Sewells were from Coventry and "raised blooded horses." This comes from a second hand email correspondence; I do not have the original letter. It may be true, or it may not.

More research needs to be done. I am intrigued by what you say about the Sewells in Coventry and I will see what I can find.

In the mid 1500s there were lots of Sewalls in Coventry England. There is some evidence the name was once Shewell. How these various families were related is not known, but there are enough of them to suggest if they were related, they had been in Coventry for 3-4 generations. Most of the families disappear from the record by the late 1600s -- in fact most can not be traced for more than two generations. In the 1642 protestation return, only one Sewall and four Shewells are to be found.

One family produced brothers Henry and William, who were both mayor of Coventry in the late 1500s and early 1600s.

William had only two daughters. Henry had two sons. One, also named Henry, came to New England in 1635 and is the ancestor of the family most commonly associated with Judge Samuel Sewall of Boston. The other son, Richard, stayed in England where he had three sons. One died unmarried during the Civil War; one, yet another Henry, supported the monarchy, was given a high position in Maryland in 1661, and has many descendants; the third disappears after having last been seen in London in the mid 1600s having left no evidence of a marriage or children.

The Massachusetts and Maryland branches have both had their Y-DNA repeatedly tested and, inexplicably, are not related to each other in spite of the paper trail that shows they should have been cousins. The FTDNA website has lots of other Sewells (and a couple Sewalls) who are not related to either the Massachusetts or Maryland Coventry descendants.

The really big loose end in this family is the son of Richard who disappeared in London after 1659, Samuel, born probably in the 1620s. Did he die, emigrate, have descendants, etc.?

To my knowledge, no other Sewalls or Sewells (the spellings were somewhat interchangeale) living today have claimed ancestry from a 16th or 17th century Coventry family. Thus my interest in the letter mentioned in an earlier post.

More details about the Massachusetts family may be found in Eben W. Graves, "Descendants of Henry Sewall" (Boston: Newbury Street Press, 2007), and Robert Charles Anderson, "The Great Migration ... 1634-5," (Boston: NEHGS, 1999-2011), vol 6.

There are other Sewell lines in New Brunswick, and I have heard about the connection to Salem, but I doubt a connection applies to Edward, Walter, and John Sewell of Saint John, unless they share a common ancestor in Coventry. Both census records and death certificates all confirm they were born in Ireland, and other sources put the immigration date to Canada around 1840s.

What do you know about the Sewells of Coventry? I would be interested in knowing what I can.

The apparent Irish origins of this family excludes their being descended from Dominicus Sewell, who went to N.B. from Mass. during the American Revolution. Dominicus Sewall was likely the great-grandson of Edward Sewall of Salem, Mass., and Exeter, N.H. (d. 1683 or 1684). He does have numerous descendants, mostly in N.B., methinks, but some now in Maine, however, and one should be careful.

I know quite a bit about Sewalls of Coventry, England, including their Mass. and Maryland descendants. The mention of a letter saying they were from Coventry suggests a Y-DNA test might be in order, as both the Mass. and Maryland branches of the Coventry, England Sewalls have been well tested.

Eben

James Sewell in Jamaica

I'm looking for ancestors of James Sewell, born approx 1820-1825, who was buying land near Christiana, Manchester, Jamaica in about 1845. He might have had a brother George, and his wife's (or sister's) name may have been Margaret. I'm not sure whether James was born in Jamaica or some part of the UK. His children were Louisa (Lulu), Kitty (Katherine?), Beth (Elizabeth?), Sal (Sally?) and George. It does not appear that he was related to William b 1801 or his son Henry Sewell of Arcadia in Jamaica b 1838.

I am looking for information on the Sewell family from Saint John, NB. The Sewells came over from Ireland sometime between 1820-1850 to settle first at Saint John, NB.

1. Walter Sewell b. 1817 Ireland, married Sarah McGuire/
i. Jane Sewell
ii. Walter Sewell
iii. M Annie Sewell
iv. Samuel McGuire Sewell
v. William E Sewell

2. John Sewell b. 1818 at Clare, Ireland, married to Maria Ward.
i. John Sewell b. 1859
ii. Edward Sewell b. 1860
iii. Walter Sewell b. 1864
iv. Catherine Sewell 1867-1894.

3. Edward Sewell, b. about 1826 Ireland, married to Mary Alexandria Kennedy
12 children.

According to John Sewell's death certificate, he was born in Clare, Ireland, though his parents, William Sewell and Jane Stevens, were both born at England. I have a letter stating that this family of Sewells were from Coventry, where they raised horses. For some reason, William and Jane must have moved to Ireland, and then either them or their children came to settle in New Brunswick.

I believe these three Sewells were brothers, though I cannot prove it yet. All three men with their families eventually moved to Massachusetts around the same time, around the 1880s.

Likely there were some sisters and possibly more brothers. If anyone has information on the Sewells of either MA, NB, Ireland, or Coventry England, drop me a line.

I can also be reached at chrisbissett AT gmail.com
I am particularly interested in finding out when Owen died & where he is buried. Katie is listed as a widow in the 1910 Census, so that is where the assumption that Owen died before 04/20/1910 comes from.

I would also like to confirm Katie's death date, as I have two contradicting dates, 11/10/1922 vs. 1/16/1929. It is said that Katie is buried in an unmarked grave in McVay Cemetery (a son from her 2nd marriage, Russell James Irvin, is said to be buried next to her, also an unmarked grave.)

I have that Owen & Katie had the following children:
Roma (1907-09/15/1915)
Ben (07/10/1909 - 6/1977)
Quinn (07/10/1909)

It is said that Quinn died at an early age.

According to the 1910 Census, Katie had 4 children with 3 living (the 3 listed above) any idea who/when/where the 4th is?

Will be happy to share what I have on Katie's family.

Thanks in advance for your time & assistance.

Pam
Wichita, KS
