Re: Felix Seymour - Father

My 2nd great-grandfather was David Seymour. He was born 1 May 1824 in Ohio and died 28 Apr 1882 in Rankin, Illinois. His parents were both from Pennsylvania. We had a cousin, Nada Seymour, who had linked us to Jane Seymour, but her research has been lost and I am trying to make the connection to Jane. Could I please have information on Felix, so I can try to see if there is a connection to our family?

Jane Hearne Farrar Seymour - Columbus, Ohio

Jane Hearne Farrar Seymour, 95, died on Friday, April 27, 2012.

Born in Columbus, Ohio on March 29, 1917, she was the daughter of John Xerxes and Antoinette Hearne Farrar.

Mrs. Seymour attended the Eastwood Elementary School and graduated in 1934 from the Columbus School for Girls, where she was President of the Student Council.

She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1938.

During her sophomore year there, a story she had written was published in the New Yorker Magazine.
After college, she returned to Columbus, Ohio and worked as a reporter on the Ohio State Journal.

In 1940, she married James Owens Seymour. She shared her husband's love of reading, travel and the woods on their farm near Delaware.
During the 1940's and early 50's, she served on the Board of Managers of the Columbus Gallery of Fine Arts and as President of the Bryn Mawr Club of Columbus and of the Columbus Parents League.
She was editor of the Columbus School for Girls Newsletter in the late 1940's and much of the 1950's.
After resigning from her post as editor, she continued for 35 years to contribute brief essays about moments in the history of the school.
During the 1950's and early 60's she served as Alumnae Representative for the Bryn Mawr Regional Scholarship Program, interviewing potential applicants from Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and West Virginia.
In 1964, one of her ceramic bowls won an award at the Ohio State Fair.

In 1965, as a member of the Board of Planned Parenthood, she helped successfully lobby the Ohio State Legislature to legalize contraception in Ohio; the results were signed into law by Governor Rhodes.

Beginning the late 1970's, she turned her attention to placing books she owned of historic value in the libraries of Ohio colleges where relatives had studied.

Throughout the 1990's she made numerous gifts of books to Oberlin, Kenyon College, Bryn Mawr College and the Columbus School for Girls.
After she had succeeded in finding good homes for the valuable books from her own library, she began to search for and find neglected treasures in used bookstores and to place them appropriately.

She is survived by her daughter, Antoinette Farrar Seymour Lofgren of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and by her nephew and nieces, Jack (Betsy) Farrar, Caroline (Bill) Orrick, Ann (Scott) Yawberg and Betsy Edwards.

A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church, 125 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 11, 2012 the Rev. Richard A. Burnett presiding.

Donations may be made to Planned Parenthood of Central Ohio, 206 East State Street, Columbus, Ohio 43215 or the Beatrice Constant Marvin Scholarship Fund at Columbus School for Girls, 56 South Columbia Avenue, Columbus 43209.

Please visit www.schoedinger.com to share a memory or to extend condolences to the family.

Franklin County, Ohio
Most probably your friend was related to Thomas John Seymour who came from Camberwell. I don't know of any other Seymour family in M'burg or Zeeland. I only remember a dead sailor with the name of Seymour was once reported. I don't have any details on your friend or my relation to him. Perhaps you'll find more information on
http://www.zeeuwengezocht.nl/en/ Also use different spellings of the name, like seijmoer and seymoer.
Regards, Cees

George P Seymour and his wife Hannah, Oswego County, New York

My G G Grandfather through my mother's father is George P. Seymour. Census records have him born about 1857 in New York as were his parents. His wife Hannah was from Ireland and she was born abt 1858 and imigrated when she was 14, abt 1872. They lived their entire married life, as nearly as I can tell, in Fulton, Oswego, NY and raised a large family that I have been able to document in detail. But, I cannot find death dates or obits (probably between 1920 and 1930), or info on George's parents or Hannah's maiden name much less where from Ireleand she comes from despite the plethora of newspaper articles documenting their lives and their children's, grandchildren's lives and deaths in the Fulton newspaper archives. I would love to learn more about my G G Grandparents and any help or clues are eagerly appreciated!

For years I had looked for this name on behalf of Jac Seymour of Middelburg whom my family had known for years ,since 1944/45 when my father was billeted in Midddelburg during the advance through Europe. Unfortunately Co as we called him died some years ago but his daughter still lives in Middelburg. I dont know if Co ever made the connection ,but he always told me his ancestors had come from England. Are you in any way related to him.
Hi there

Thanks for your email. i have only recently got back to ancestry and doing the family tree. We must be related!!I am from Oliver & Martha's daughter Julia's line. I wasn't aware that Oliver came out with a brother and a sister. I remember finding a shipping document with a Mr Seymour from the US, i can't put my hands on it right now but was going to follow that line through. Martha was going to be my next project, i have been lucky enough to collect some information on her mother Harriet, a rather tragic life she had and there seems to be a big hole in Martha's early life. I would be happy to share info with you if you'd like.

thanks and look forward to hearing from you.
warm regards
sue

There are many spelling variations of Seymour/Seymourd/Simard. Many people were illiterate when events were being recorded, so spelling was down to the scriber. It makes it very hard tracing some people... I think my Seymour arrived in Australia a Seymour, but was born a Simard...

I'm very skeptical that this is your Harriet. Harriet's husband, Anson Webster, died in March, 1836. For her to have a child in 1837 is not out of the question, but she would have been 48 years old at the time.

Also, in a document from 1844, she is listed as "Harriet Webster" - which means she didn't remarry.

Your idea requires an out-of-wedlock child to a 48-year-old woman in the 1830s. None of these are out of the question, but they are all unlikely.

The only "Barbour" listed in the book is a Lina Barbour, who married Dudley Case and had a daughter (Mary Ann Case, 1812-1895), who married Sedgwick Seymour (1808-1859). This, however, is from a completely different group of Seymours than we've been discussing.
From what you sent to me I found a Harriet Seymour, daughter of Capt. Samuel Seymour. Samuel married Rebecca Osborn. Samuel's dates are 1754-1837. He and Rebecca had a daughter, Harriet (1789-1854)who married Anson Webster. Anson Webster died in March 1836.

On my Barbour tree there was John Barbour who was in a relationship with a Harriet Seymour. I've always questioned whether they actually married. I have no dates for either of them but they had a son, John Seymour Barbour (1837-1913). I do not know of any other children.

If I haven't missed something, following only the dates then these Harriets could be one and the same. Since I've not found any paper trail on "my" Harriet it could be that she didn't marry John Barbour.

I would be interested in your comments on this and any suggestions you may have for where to take my research.

The Oliver that died at Muttama was my Oliver too. He was riding his horse home and hit his head on an overhanging branch, fracturing his skull. He wasn't found for a few days, so his date of the death was either the 14th or 15th.. I have a copy of the report, so will try and attach it for you... I had your g grandfather as being born in 1873.. the youngest child of Oliver. They really liked the name William, as Oliver was Oliver William (mine) and another was George William....1863 Joseph their brother was gassed in the trenches in the First World War, and used to go mad, riding through town (Gundagai..) and ended up shooting his wife, children and himself... tragic story. Oliver William married Anna Martha Haley and had 11 children... the eldest being Sarah (Sally), then my grandfather William, who married Ephy Jamieson...they had 13 children. My mother was the fourth youngest... Hazel.
Great to hear from you!
Barbara

Hi Barbara, sorry for taking so long to get back to you.
My grandmother was Rose Seymour born 1898. She had 2 brothers William (Bill) born 1899 and John (Jack) born 1904 and a sister Martha born 1907. She also had a stepbrother. James Jarvey born 1884. The family lived on Collendina Station, Sth Corowa, and Corowa NSW. My great grandparents were William Seymour and Mary Kenelly. (She was Mary Jarvis in her first marriage). William born 1868 in Gundagai father Oliver mother Martha (Hoe) died 1952 Corowa.
MY great great grandparents were Oliver Seymour and Martha Seymour (Hoe)
Oliver born 1819 or 1820. The information I have recieved from cousin Terry is that they were married at Tambaroora (near Hill end) 1854-1855 Oliver killed in accident at Muttama Reefs (Gundagai) 1876 at time of death there were 5 living sons, 3 daughters and 1 son and daughter deceased. (William is the only son or daughter I can find. One may have been called Joseph).
Martha remarried in 1879 to John Farrer.
That's about all the information I have I hope it is accurate and correct and I hope to hear from you soon.
I'm sure if this information is correct then I believe we are related and would love to hear from you.
Andrew
Hello Andrew,
I have Oliver's date of death as 14th or 15th of February, 1876..certificate number 06555. He was riding home from the pub when his head hit a branch and fractured his skull. They didn't find him for a while, so date of death is not exact. I have seen the coroneal inquest report. His wife Martha (Hoe) died in the 1880's. Which child are you a descendent of? Oliver's son Oliver William, and his son William were mine.
Cheers,
Barbara

I am eager to get as much information on any of my ancestors as I can, so if you know about Olivers parents or siblings I would really like to know. I believe Oliver died in 1856, I dont have any information about Mary, and the circumstances of Olivers death.
I got the information that Oliver came from Kennedy from my cousin and I found this town near Jamestown New York which is not too far from Canada but your explanation may be right.
I hop to hear from you soon.
Regards, Andrew

I have found shipping details of an Oliver, George and Julia arriving here between 1849 and 1859 but they came from Britain, so must have gone from Canada to Britain to Australia?? Very confusing and hard to track. I have quite a bit on the lineage of Oliver who was my ggg grandfather. Thank you for the info on Martha Hoes later marriages. I was unaware of these.

Hello Andrew, I too am a descendant of Oliver, and I have a copy of the certificate showing Kennedy in North America. I have also seen Lower Canada mentioned. After years of trying to find Kennedy, it finally dawned on me that the way Oliver spoke would have caused Canada to sound like Kennedy. The Seymours were real bushies, and just remembering my grandfather William, and my great aunts, I am pretty sure this is the explanation. I have seen in another tree that he was from Quebec so would like to know what they have seen to assume this....would love to be able to trace them further. I believe he came out with his brother George and sister Julia.
Would love to hear from you,
Barbara in Tasmania

Does anyone have any Life story info on famous watercolorist and conserva-tionist / self-taught botanist Jane (nee Seymour) PINHEIRO? She settled into the Quartz Hill area of Antelope Valley, CA in early 1940s. Her husband was of Portuguese descent from the Azore islands.

I am seeking ANY / ALL info/pictures (esp.of herself at various/all ages, but also images of her watercolor paintings, too), as well as stories about her life and any genealogical info on her ancestry, too!

My family (grandparents and dad) were longtime friends with her, but sadly way before I was born. Trying to catch-up, after the fact!

I know she was raised in Salt Lake City and helped her mother w/a boarding house business her mom had there.

Are there any descendants of hers out there? I believe she had children, but this too I'm not certain of, so would love to know info on names/dates/places
of any of her kids and/or grandkids, etc.

Putting together a folio about her, as part of my family's history (a section on family friends and their lives). Thanks so very much, Sincerely,

Diane M. Spencer

Thank you so much for working with me on this.

I am working on the family tradition that John Seymour Barbour and Horatio Seymour (NY Gov.) were first cousins. If that was so, those two would have had the same grandparents, I think. For John S. Barbour (1837-1913), I have only a name for his father, John Barbour, but nothing for his grandparents. For Horatio Seymour(1810-1886), I have his parents as Henry Seymour (1780-1837)and Mary Ledyard Forman (1785-1859). Horatio's paternal grandparents were Moses Seymour, Jr. (1742-1826) and Molly Marsh (1752-1826. His maternal grandparents were Jonathan Forman (1755-1809) and Mary Ledyard (1758-1806). If I am figuring this correctly, then a child of Moses and Molly Marsh Seymour (there were 6) or a child of Jonathan and Mary Ledyard Forman (I know of only 2) would have been a cousin to John S. Barbour. If all of that is correct, then I would need to follow the spouses and children of those 8 known children.

I'm anxious for your comments on this - if I've narrowed it down correctly. I now think that I got off on the wrong track with Thomas Seymour. Would you then have information on any or all of those children?

Thank you again for your assistance and patience.

The link between Gov. Horatio Seymour and Thomas Seymour, the 1st Mayor of Hartford is not very direct. You have to go back three generations from Thomas (to John(2)) and then go down his son John(3)'s line.

In other words, they are second cousins, twice removed. (I think)

Horatio's entry is here:
http://www.s560.com/dokuwiki/book:244.horatio

And, again, if there is any entry from the book that will help your research that I do not already have up, let me know and I'll see about getting it transcribed...
Thank you for your reply and for leading me to that site with all of the information on Thomas Seymour. That has a wealth of data and I was able to get the names and dates of his children. However, now I see no connection between him and Horatio Seymour (1810-1886)let alone a connection to a Harriet Seymour who married John Barbour (that's the connection I'm seeking). But, now I have not one but two ladies by the name of Mary Ledyard: the Mary who married Thomas Seymour and Mary Ledyard (1755-1809) who married Jonathan Forman and had a daughter Mary Ledyard Forman (1785-1859) who was the mother of Horatio Seymour who became governor of NY.

I don't know where to go from here but I again thank you.

Does anyone know the descendants, including spouses, of this Thomas Seymour? I am searching for either a Harriet Seymour who married John Barbour and had a son, John Seymour Barbour, 1837-1913 or a Barbour spouse, of a descendant of Thomas Seymour, who is an ancestor of my John Barbour.

I am looking for parents of David Seymour (Seymore or Seamon) born 1 May 1824 in Ohio, and died 28 Apr 1882 in Rankin, Vermilion, Illinois. David was first married to Rachel Mains in 1845, then Susan Hardy in 1858.

David and Susan are my 2nd great grandparents through son Alvin (1861 to 1938).
I have genealogical records of the Seymour family beginning with Thomas Seymour (1752-1821) and wife Hannah Merritt. Records were compiled by daughter of Ida (Seymour) Thorn (1864-1936) and James Irving Thorn (1865-1939)of West Somers, Westchester County, New York. I am transcribing these handwritten records if any descendants of Thomas Seymour are interested.
