Shadduck of the southern states

I'm searching for a "Jute Shaddix" or someone sounding like that name.
My grandmother gave me this information 30 years ago from my grandfather's side of the family from memory. The information was given over long-distance telephone and my grandmother had a heavy southern accent.

This is all the information I have:

Jute married Avilee Craig, sister to my grandfather(he was born in 1910). Avilee & Jute had a son "Leroy". Since then, I've been wondering about the name spellings based on my grandmother's accent. "Jute" could have been "Jude-a short form of Judiah" or maybe even a nick-name. Shaddix could have been any of the other spellings of this name (Shaddick, Shadduck, Shaddock, etc.). "Leroy" could have been "Lee Roy".
My grandmother (who lived in Georgia) said my grandfather had some brothers who lived in Alabama. They could have come from anywhere across that region (even maybe on to Texas).
I know this might sound vague, but this is all the information I have to go on. I've had no luck in tracing my Craig roots (based on my grandmother's information, and her information has been very accurate so far, I've managed to trace many of her ancestors).
I'd appreciate any help!

Actually, I'm a Sly descendant, so I'm not really researching Shadduck.
Joseph C. Sly married Elizabeth Amelia Coyle on 18 Oct 1872 in Menonomee, Dunn Co., Wisconsin. I am part of this line. Also, Joseph was born in Leeds Co., Ontario on 1 Jan 1838. Died 16 May 1912 in Latah, Spokane Co., Washington.

We think Joseph had a son before this marriage, however it is possible he had a daughter. Don't know the name of alleged son.

As you say, census info can be wrong and very misleading.

Sorry I don't have more on Shadduck.
Happy Hunting.

Hi Ruth,

It's possible, perhaps even likely, that Ella and Joseph had a daughter named Alice born in 1872.

It appears the marriage between Joseph and Ella was short as she in shown, in the 1880 census, as living with her parents, and Joseph is not mentioned. The household also includes Alice, age 8, and Ella, at age 29, is the only person in the household who is potentially the mother.

The 1880 census shows that the parents of Alice were both born in NY wheras I believe Ella was born in Pa. This may not be a fatal flaw as census data is notorious for getting these things wrong.

Ella was married three times, that I have found. She last married Charles Van Tyle on 17 Jan 1917 in Milwaukee so she died sometime after that.

I am interested in any information you may have about other descendents of Benjamin Shadduck. I also have his ancestry back a few generations.

John

Thank you for the reply. The dates that I have given you are from a family member that lives in Carrington, N. Dakota. I only have very sketchy information about this side of my family and would like to hear from you again. I will be returning to North Dakota this year and will touch bases with some of the family members and the local museum. Grace had actually taped a rememberence for the local museum. It has been mislaid and my hope is that it is recovered.

Keep in touch. Jmills

Hi Jeana, Good to hear from you again. I do have more info since we last exchanged e-mails. I would like to see what info you have before I post the most current update of what I have. Sometimes the entries in a family Bible can be very interesting especially in a family that large. It is interesting to know if possible when the entries started being made. It is sometimes hard to keep the various children's birthdays straight when you are dealling with 22 children, some of whom died before maturity. Seth was one of the younger children and there was a terrific age spread.
Some of the question I would have for you is whether there are references to any of the wives? Their maiden names? Places where people were living? Is every thing listed in front, on special pages or in the back or scattered throughout? Is there any reference to which child belonged to which mother? Any reference to the mother's origins? To children? To people you don't know about?
I having been working with census records and death records mostly for the last 6 months. I have discovered a number of interesting things.I hope to hear from you soon.
Pamela

Your reply is interesting. The birthdates are a bit off, but in that particular family we have found a number of birthdays off by quite a bit. There were 22 children and the siblings seemed to get each others birthdays mixed up. I'm suspecting that Ann Chadduck/Anne Shadduck may have been Lyn Ann Shadduck, daughter of Joseph Shadduck and Elizabeth Willard and actually born in Greenfield Twp, Erie County, Pa. The family had a practice of using the middle name instead of the first name. Who she married has been a mystery. The family had connections to Ohio and the name was spelled Chadduck a number of times, off and on for a number of generations. Are you fairly sure about her birthday? Often when one spouse was born some place, it was assumed that they were both from the same place or even in that family, misleading info was sometimes passed on to hid or break with history. In the extended Shadduck family, there were families in Ohio and North and South Dakota. The story about Grace is interesting. If we can place her in this family I can give you many generations.
Pamela

1900 census, Cecil Twp., Washington Co., PA. lists Alfred SHADDUCK as an inmate of Pennsylvania Reform School (I would love to know why he was there), b.Oct 1883 in PA.
1910 census lists him in McKean Co, PA, ED 0117, with wife Hattie (AHLES) and daughter Jessie.
Anne Shadduck

My great greatgrandmother was Anne Shadduck, married to Joseph Farquar around 1825, they were from Farquar/Faugier Co. Virginia. Their son William Farquar was born near Trenton, Ohio and married Sarah Jane Beans in Illinois. Does anyone have any information about where she was born, where her parents were from?
