Shadwells from Co. Meath, Ireland

I am related to Shadwells who were born 1847 to 1864 in Gibraltar, Kiltale, Co. Meath. Some of them appear to have emigrated to New Jersey (South Orange and surrounding area) including Laurence Shadwell, Thomas Shadwell, Patrick Shadwell (he moved on to Manhattan, NYC and died 1920's). I've no proof that the men are my Shadwells, but mine didn't have families in Ireland and ages in various US censuses from 1880 match up. Laurence md Mary Anne Cooney in 1877 in Our Lady of the Valley RC church, Orange, NJ. Thomas md Bridget Fox 1876 same church. Patrick md Jennie McAuley abt 1890 (NJ?). Do these names mean anything to anyone? Thanks.

it might be better if I could send info to you direct, my e-mail is ja_darcy@hotmail.com so if you would be willing to give me yours it might help. I have been in contact with other relatives of this family and feel that I cannot put on the net info that they might not like, so can I ask you firstly are you in contact with any other descendants, and if not and if they are willing would you like to be?

To be honest I think that most of the info I have is out there anyway, that is how I found it, but I am sure you would agree that to deliberately put out a whole family's history would not be right and that it should just be given to you. Regards Joan

Hello again Pamela, sorry to have taken so long to reply to your message.
I have been researching my son-in-law's family, Shadwell, and in those searches have come across a mine of info re other Shadwell families including yours.

I am quite sure that several of these families are connected somehow as if you take the 1881 census there were only 341 people living in England, Scotland, Wales, Isle of Man and the Channel Islands on census day, not a lot really.

Anyway, Rueben,

Rubing (Rueben) Shadwell was x 31st July 1720 in Caxton his parents were a Griffin Shadwell and Anne Rueben, Rueben married Elizabeth (no date) and they had 8 children, William x 1748 burial 28.7.1754, Elizabeth x 4h February 1753 she married Richard Laver on 23rd July 1775 at Caxton. Ann x 13th July 1755, Richard x 17th March 1757 married Susan who died 1827 aged 63, Richard died 1830 aged 75 at Caxton, Rueben x 19th November 1758, Mary x 19th April 1761, Sarah x 10th March 1763 believed she married William Howse 9/11/1789 at Bourn, Frances x 14th July 1767 married John Page 27th May 1788 at Harwick, Cambs.

Rueben and Susan (Susannah) possibly had 6 children, Rueben born 1796, William 1807, Frances 1786, Richard 1788, Mary 1795 John? buried 1809, Elizabeth.

Rueben born circa 1796 married Phoebe who was born circa 1796/7 died aged 73 in 1869 reg. St. Ives Rueben died 1868.

They had 9 children, William born 1817, Mary born 1821, Richard 1826 married Harriet Amos 19th February 1860 Frances 1828 married Joseph Childs 1852, Susan 1830 married 1864, John 1835, Elizabeth 1837 died 1871 reg. Bedfordshire, |Anderson Rueben born 1839, James born 1843

Now I have loads more but is this of use? and I do not want to spoil the search for you, if you want the rest just let me know and I cannot promise to deal with it immediately but promise I will get it to you. regards Joan

Dear Alison,
I stumbled over your post while Googling Shadwells and really hope you get to see this. My grandmother was Doris Marie Winstanley Shadwell, your aunt. She married Herbert Theodore Mayo and I am the daughter of Pauline Mayo, their oldest child. Mum is about to celebrate her 87th birthday and is very interested in family history. I have the bug, and have just recently discovered the link between the Shadwells and the Winstanleys.
If you see this please get in touch! I have a tree on ancestry called the Gunn/mayo tree so you can see what I have found so far.
Best wishes,
Lesley

Any information you may have about them would be great. I can't find complete birth/death/marraige/list of children records for Earl Shadwell.

She was the granddaughter of Hickman Hensley and Elizabeth Rentfrow, and if you have not already connected to the couple...look out for a onslought of cousins!

DearMargaret, thanks for your reply to my e-mail I am sorry that it has taken me so long to reply, I am not a Shadwell myself but it is my son-in-law's family that we are tracing. I am trying to locate a Willia, and a Gideon Shadwell who possibly left England in early 1900's, they would have come from East Sussex and after both of them married they just seem to have disappeared. You state that you are looking for any Shadwell and if they should be from England then I have plenty for you to choose from. Do you know if any of your forebears came from England? We know that some Shadwells or Chadwells went to America in the 1630's they came from Gloucestershire and apparently went to Massechusetts. You can contact me at ja_darcy@hotmail.com and I hope to hear from you, regards Joan.

I remarried in March of 2000. I sent your mom a bunch of stuff on the family several years ago, so maybe you didn't get it. You have some of the things wrong. Grandpa Harry was born in Clay County, Indiana. He was born January 19, 1890, and died October 3, 1959. Grandma Belva, and he were married May 24, 1919. Grandma Belva Almeda Poe, Shadwell was born January 11, 1899, and died December 17, 1953. They are buried at Reinhart, Poe Cemetery in the southern part of Effingham. Let me know if I can help any more. Just E-Mail me. Hope all is well.

Aunt Dot
Hello, my name is Sean Shadwell.

I have quite a few relatives from the Effingham area. My fathers name was Kenneth Shadwell.
My aunts names: Josephine Shadwell (Glascock was her married name) Dorothy Shadwell and my uncles names: Eugene Shadwell and Darrell Shadwell.

I suspect we may be related, albeit distantly.

When I was in Effingham I met someone with the last name of Poe who was a 5th cousin and my father mentioned we had many relatives in the Effingham/ Southern Illinois area. Unfortuanately, I was quite young so don't remember many names.

If anyone knows any info on my family, living or deceased feel free to send me an email at : nightoddity@hotmail.com (its the email I use to avoid spamming up my personal account).

I am particularly interested in finding out about my grandfather Harry Shadwell and who his parents were.
