I am indeed so; Emisire is my great grandfather.

I read the book called Flu and it was a powerful, moving story of that pandemic! it killed so many. with the present easy for families to declare a religious grounds for not having their children to be vacinated, it may take as few as five kids to create a new pandemic. This was reported recently on NPR.

It was probably the flu. 1918 was the time of the flu epidemic. My grandfather's brother lost his wife and son on the same day.

She was my g-g-grandmother, and today is her birthday. I know that she married 3x: John G Bowman / Bowmar; John Colman Ashby; and Charles Martin.

Children with John Bowmar were Walter, Charles, Annie, John T (my g-grandfather), Ollie and Lizzie. With John Ashby, she had a son, Sanford. The 1920 census shows her as Mary Martin, a widow.

Mary suffered in 1918. Both her husband, Charles Martin, and her son, Charles Bowmar, died on 10-22-1918. I'm curious about whether they were in an accident. Her son, John T, died in Dec 1918 of pneumonia.

I am related to the Francis Shahan who is listed with the David Ford family in the 1860 Illinois U.S. Census. I believe that the William and Charles also shown with David Ford's family are really William O Shahan, and Charles M. Shahan who is my great-grandfather, and brothers to Francis. You can reply directly to me at my email address: artshehan@cox.net

Don't know if she was 'officially' adopted or ????

She is a mystery to my cousin and myself.
thank you for your help.

In your search, have you discovered any information on my great grandfather Patrick Shahan who eventually was in Panola County, Texas around 1840 remaining there until his death. From what I know, he was born around 1811, came to the U.S. around 1825-26 (maybe through Canada). Any info would be appreciated. Thanks

About 5 years ago I bought a copy directly from Elizabeth Shahan, which by the way, at that time was the only place you could buy one. The cost was $25.00 which encluded shipping, also she signed the book, which I imagine she always does. Inside of the book she included a copy of a letter that gives info about her research, and at the bottom is an order form that can be used to order the book. If you prefer I can scan the letter in PDF format, and email it to you. Regards, Art Shehan artshehan@cox.net

My SHAHAN were in Mason Co., Ky; IL, MO, IA, OR, & WA

Shahan (?) run-ins with the KKK in Ripley Co., Mo....

Has anyone heard the following story? I've spent a few days looking at the boards here as well as on rootsweb.
I can't find any possible corresponding Shahans who died and were buried in Ripley County.
I'm assuming that the information at http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=REG&d...
is basically correct.
The following was given to me by my uncle:

I am Larry Lee Tuttle, son of Vinita Violet (Ketchum) and Lee Tuttle, Grandson of Barney Burney and Rosetta (Wallace) Ketchum, Great-grandson of Robert and Sophia (Shahan) Ketchum.
The following story has been told in my presence by some of my aunts and uncles. It has always been said, "Grandma Sophie said this happened to some of her family back in Ripley County, Missouri." We believe she meant the Shahan family, although it was never clear exactly what relation they were.
The family in the story lived near the railroad tracks, a feed mill, and sawmill.
According to Grandma Sophie, the most influential organizations in the area were the Missionary Baptist Church and the Ku Klux Klan, and some men of the community were very active in each. Her relative and several of his family quit going to the Missionary Baptist Church because of some pressure by some church members to join the "Klan." They received several 'visits,' 'warnings,' and 'admonitions' by those same members to 'encourage' them to return to the flock and 'join up with the Klan.' Some relented, some moved away, some refused.
At least two Shahan families stood their ground. Soon their business was refused by the store and feed mill.
One of the Shahans told his wife one evening after he came in from the fields that he was going to the next town that night to get some seed and food items for the family. He was going to go at night and walk the railroad tracks, to try to avoid any trouble. He would buy his supplies the next morning and catch the evening train back home and be back in 24 hours. When he didn't come home the next night, his wife thought the train might be running late. She went out to the barn to do the morning chores and found her husband hanging from the rafters of the barn.
The local 'officials' ruled it a 'suicide by a man whose mind had led him astray.' The family tried to get the people to see that it couldn't be suicide because: (1) the family didn't own any expensive rope like he was hanged with, (2) he was hanging in the center of the barn and there was nothing for him to stand on or step off of, (3) his wrists had bloody wounds and (4) his head had a deep gash over one ear. A sack of see and another sack of food was found in the barn. The family believed it was the work of the KKK. A piece of paper was found wedged in the barn door, dew had made a mess of the writing. Some claimed it was a suicide note, but the family believed it was the customary warning note the Klan left with those they 'reprimanded.' According to Grandma Sophie, the widow left the area and remarried. She may have relocated in Western Missouri or Oklahoma, some believe. This is the story related to me to the best of my memory. When I heard it being told, I was a teenager and maybe in my twenties and not as concerned or interested in family stories as I should have been. Those oral historians of my ancestry have all passed on and now it is I who must make that oral history a written one.
Written by: Larry Lee Tuttle on January 28, 2010.

Larry Tuttle sent this account to a relative, C. Herbert Breece, of Elsinore, Mo, who also had heard the story.
February 10, 2010, He writes:

"The story of the K.K.K. is what my grandpa Herbert M. Breece told and also my dad. Of the hanging in the barn. That house and barn was at foot of the road going up to the Antioch Cemt. The barn is gone and another house has been rebuilt there."

According to some maps, the man probably walked along the tracks to Naylor and rode back.

Further information from C. Herbert Breece (I've corrected some spelling but left a lot of the original 'flavor'):

"On my Aunt Deliah A. (Breece) Ketchum, she died Oct 2, 1887. Simon Solomon Ketchum died 1893 - no other information yet. Like to have his month least. Heard he died from a falling tree limb. I looked in the Doniphon, Mo of Ripley Co. library of the 1893 papers, no luck. Believe I'll try again to see if over looked it. All deaths didn't get reported in those days.
[...]
There has been alot of changes in Oxly and Doniphan Mo. since then. The brick store and the Adams-Spiliter Hotel, even the hanging tree. And even the hanging tree stump is gone. The town Oxly has really went down hill, just people living there now. There are no businesses now, they have to go to Doniphon or Poplar Bluff to do their buying. Naylor or Oxly gone down hill like a ghost town, of what I used to konw.
My dad was talking one time or many times. Of the K.K.K., a member or members trying to steal my aunt, my dad's sister. When they was living near Oxly of Ripley Co., Mo.. They had her in a big furniture box. Grandma E. (Martin) Breece seen them get her out of the box. So, she went and got my grandpa Herbert M. Breece. He took out after them through the woods. Grandpa was catching up with them, so they dropped my Aunt Alberty and let her roll down the steep hill side. They had hoods on so not know who they was.
Then another time, they came around grandpa house at night time. My dad, being a boy said he seen someone out side. Grandpa told everyone to be quiet. So, he eased and got the rifle and gave them buck shot in the behind. He said, grandpa, we'll know tomorrow at town of Oxly who it was. Because they would have to see a doctor to get the buck shot taken out. A small town everyone knows everything that happens. For a small town alot of big and small things happen abt. 100 to 150 years ago in that county.
My grandpa did gamblin in his early yrs., and won houses and property. Grandpa and some men had a cabin on Logan Creek near Oxly and play cards and gambling and drinking. His mother was a strict Church goer, cause his dad was a preacher at Fairdealing Church. That is how he died working for the Lord. He was coming home from church in the rain. Nathaniel A. Breece, grandpa's dad, got sick and died in Sept 1902. He is buried by his sister Deliah A. (Breece) Ketchum - Simon Solomon Ketchum in Antioch Cemt. Ripley Co., Mo. My grandpa and dad told this many times, and showed me.
Back to the K.K.K., when they did these things to my grandpa and his family. Cause my dad said that grandpa Herbert M. Breece would not join them. The Spiliter Hotel when it was torn down they found membership books and uniforms and hoods they worn. About 35 yrs. ago when I was younger and some of the older people still living. I was doing family tree and asking question of the Spiliter Hotel. Cause my grandma Ethel G. (Martin) Breece worked there 1918-1919. That is where my grandpa met her. A train run through Oxly at the time. Her family lived in Dent and Texas County Mo. Which is west of Ripley Co., Oxly and Naylor, used to be thriving towns, not anymore. Oh! about doing the research and asking questions. As you see in some shows, no one knew anything, they played shutmouth. Had to learn everything the hard way, even my dad wouldn't tell some things. If my Aunt Alberty (Breece) Hodges knew, she didn't mind telling. But she lived in southern Ill.
[...]
Some of the Cooper family lived down from the Antioch Cemetary going toward Doniphan. My Great Uncle Charlie Cooper's mom and dad lived in that area. My dad showed me, the house has been gone a long, long time. They was buried where a cluster of trees used to be. Like a homestead grave. There is a lot of them around, and have lost their family information locations. As we see on these real old western shows. Like wagon trains when someone dies and have to bury them. Then go off and leave them behind away from the family."
