Hi Bernadette

I did some more digging this morning and found some good evidence that I have the right William.
A Benjamin Brad/Bradd was one of the fencibles who came to NZ from Ireland on the 'Oriental Queen' the same year as William & Simeon (1849).
On Williams marriage record to Ann Merrett on 1/5/1854 in Sydney, a Benjamin Brad and Jane Merrett witnessed. On the 12/6/1854 Jane Merrett and Benjamin Bradd married & William & Ann Shale witnessed.
Benjamin & Jane had 3 children (1st named William)in Sydney area and later died in Sydney.
It doesn't seem that Brad is a common name and it's possible that William simply lied on his marriage about being a bachelor.
What do you think?
Carol

Hi again,
The problem with the 2 William Shales is getting confirmation.
Both born Staffordshire about 1800.
NZ William's wife died 1850 but AUS William says single when married in 1855.
NZ William did not die or remarry in NZ.
NZ William is on 1841 census: Bath Lane, Rushall, STS, after he retired from the Marines.

What we need is William on a shipping list from NZ to AUS. And I wonder if any of NZ William's children passed on what happened to their father? 'Disappeared to AUS' would be good.

I do like that both Williams have Rhoda in their near descendants, it's not a common name.
Hi Bernadette

I have had some spare time so tackling family tree again. Did you get the copy of death certificate that I sent you for William Shale (1801-1859).

I am searching for more info on the William Shale "Fencible" from the Berhampore 1849 to see if he's possibly my GG Grandfather. I found info on Simeon Shale (pension allocation & death record) after they arrived, but can't find anything on William. Do you have any further info to help me on this? Do you have the census record for William & his family from 1841?
Carol
ps Was the Smith's that they came over with their in-laws

Hi Dale

I don't think I've ever spoken to you before. I am trying to trace info on a William Shale (my Great Great Grandfather on paternal side) I have a copy of his death certificate (d. 1859)which says he was born in staffordshire in england in 1801. He married Ann Merrett in Sydney in 1854 and in 1855 they had a son Edwin Joseph (Edwin Joseph is responsible for the adding of the "s" to Shale & he had lots of children (Port Macquarie area). I am having trouble tracing back from there. I did find a promising record of a William in NZ who came from staffordshire as part of the 'Fencibles'in 1849. He was born around same time, but unable to substantiate at this time.
Are you married to the same line?

I will try to get copy of death certificate or son's birth certificate to get more info.
He married in 1854 in Sydney, so I've been concentrating my search for approx 1820-1835.
Sorry might have more to go on later.
Thanks
Carol

Hey Steve,
I was never notified you replied to this. Yes we are cousins. Christian Shale was the brother of my GGG grandmother, Mary Shale Seybold. Please contact me at zap3048@yahoo.com, or ralph.sayers@navy.mil. I have some info on the John Horace Shale family, including a copy of the letter he wrote from Helena Ar, just before he was killed. I would love to find his grave. We also have a cousin Kevin Shale of Boston who has done research including trips to Germany. Are the Souders of S. Dakota still alive? They came to see my grandmother in the late 1970s. We got alot of copies of really old pictures of the Christian Shale family from them.

Hi Ralph, I`m descended from Christian Shale, who was a son of Ferdinand Shale(Scheel?) by his first wife, whereas John H. Shale was a son of Ferdinand`s by his second wife I believe( this is all from memory, so forgive me for any mistakes). BUT, I am a Civil War buff so I have been researching Sgt. John Shale quite extensively for the last five years or so. He probably lies in an unmarked grave at Memphis or is still at or around Battery C in some unknown site. I know from pension records that most or all of the children wound up with guardians as you said and there is mention of Henry I believe going into partnership with someone in a hardware store in missouri about 20 years after the war. As I recall he was listed on a school board of some sorts about 1890 also, but I could be mistaken( it`s Christmas eve now but when I get a chance I`ll look up the info in my papers). Did you Know about the other son who was supposedly given away before the war to a man around New Orleans? I`ll look forward to hearing from you, maybe we can fill in a few blanks for each other...........Steve

John remarries Rebecca Johnson on Aug. 18 1859 has a daughter Alice Victoria b. 1 Jan 1863. John is then killed in battle. Rebecca gives up the boys, remarries Mr. Meadow Sites. Desperately trying to find out what happend to the Shale boys. I have much info on the Shale lines from PA going back to the late 1600s. Thanks
Ralph Sayers

Looking for Shale or Shales

I'm looking to trace our family history and am looking for a William Shale who I believe came from England(sorry no idea where). He died in Australia in 1859. He married in 1854 to an Ann Merrett and had a son named Edwin Joseph Shale in 1855. I think his father may have been a William also. Can anyone help?

Alexander Blair Shales

Am interested in finding our cousin, Alex Shale. He was born Jan 1884, in Lewis Co, N.Y. He is first mentioned on the census of 1915. We know from the newspaper the story of his birth, attended only by 2 farm boys who went for help when their sister hemmoraged. He stayed at Cummins Rd, which is locally known as Blair Corners for the Blair families which had several homes in the area. I am related to the Robert and John Blair of that area. We know nothing of schooling or trade for Alex, and surely would like any info we can get.
It is thought that his mother may have been slightly retarded, but noone can tell us for sure. Thanks, Caroline
