Thank you so much Avril, I feel quite touched to think that Dorothea Shardlow could have been playing from the book of Sonatas now in my possession, as an elegant young Edwardian lady, 17 years of age, exactly 100 years ago in 1912. It seems astonishing that something as ephemeral and so easily destroyed as paper can outlast so many generations of people, bringing in its music the same beauty and joy to each generation. In turn, it makes me wonder what will eventually become of my cherished books and works of art, and how many different people will have appreciated them by 2112. Best Wishes, Ian

Wonderful to hear from you so quickly and to learn that the book of music I have belonged to a lady. I'm guessing the book could be a century old. Do you have dates of Dorothea's birth & death and/or indications of where she lived?

I'm most grateful for your efforts, Ian

I will ask my cousin's in Queensland see what they come up with and check the huge tree for names and get back to you. The SHARDLOW tree is on here under John S Shardlow which is very extensive. As John from Nottingham paid his own way over to join his son Samuel along with other son's they had a business in Hughendon Queensland as each son had a different trade making a good building firm of Shardlow & Son's

email pevavdav@hotmail for more info
I recently purchased an old hardbound book of Beethoven Piano Sonatas in the Blue Mountains, NSW. It was professionally embossed, "D A Shardlow, Hughenden" on the cardboard cover.

It would be nice to learn something of DA Shardlow, as I suspect that he or she may have been an accomplished pianist.

Ian

Hi Judy
Your father and my father are first cousins. His mother Maude Shardow (my grandmother) was your grandfather's sister.

My dad is now in his 70's. He asked me about a year ago if I could find anything out his uncle John/Jack who they lost contact with. As you probably know Agnes Mcguire and John Shardlow only had two children before he died. My grandmother Maude and your grandfather John/Jack. My direct email address is deborahaldridge@bigpond.com. If you send me an email I can provide you with a bit more info, photos etc and hopefully you might be willing to pass on some information about Jack. In my search for John/Jack found a whole stack of info and now finally Jack! Very exciting for me to pass on to my dad. I look forward to hearing from you. regards Debbie Aldridge

I have a bit of a mystery about this chappie.

I'm researching a Powis family, and in the 1901 census, he's living with a Mary Powis , widow ,Chearles E Powis son aged 17, Herbert Ed 14, and Gilbert Shardelow is listed as son also aged 22, born Bermondsey.

However when I searched back, thainking that Mary Powis must have been married before to a Shardelow, it doesn't seem to fit.

Gilbert was born 1876, son of John Shardelow, and Eliza Wheeble, who were married 1873 in St Leonards shoreditch.

1880 Eliza Shardelow died.
1881 John and his children are at Southwark, described as a widower, along with his sister Cathering.

1883 Charles Edwin Powis is born, son of Mary Powis.

So that only leaves about 2 years in which Mary could have married widower John, left him, or he died, and then married Edward Powis?

Why else would they have listed Gilbert Shardelow as her son in the 1901 census, if he wasn't actually hers?

HI Avril
I have just looked at the photo you posted. I know it has been a few years since you were active on this site. The woman sitting second from the end with the hair bun to the side looks like my grandmother Anges Maud Shardlow. I have a photo of her which is almost identical and can scan and send it to you. I would dearly like to see some of your other photos. Do you know what year that photo was taken? I also have a couple of photos of her family (mother, father, brother) here in Australia and am trying to trace their origin and what happened to her brother John/Jack. My email address is deborahaldridge@bigpond.com. Regards Debbie Aldridge

William Shardlow of Aston upon Trent Derbyshire

Could someone who has seen the parish records for Aston please assist me in locating the CORRECT William Shardlow who married Catherine Thorpe at Ason in 1775. The various internet sources (IGI, rootsweb family trees, family history societies) all seem divided on this marriage. There are 2 contenders -
1. William Shardlow b. 1739 to William S. & Hannah Siddon.
2. William Shardlow b. 1753 to Joseph S and Sarah Baker
I have located a tombstone at Aston whose inscription reads "...William Shardlow who died August 4 1826 aged 70 (makes DOB 1756)...and his wife Catherine..who died April 16 1824 aged 82" (makes DOB 1742)
This would seem to make No. 2 the correct William, but I would be pleased to hear from anyone who can confirm / refute this.
Thanks
Catherine
