She lived in East St. Louis, Illinois and St. Louis, Missouri and married Henry Schall in 1860. It seems like they could be the same people you are looking for... I'd love to find out!

Obit of David E. Shaw 1909

From the Chatsworth Plaindealer
Chatsworth,Livingston,Illinois

DAVID E. SHAW
FEBRUARY 26, 1909

Departed this life on the 8th of February, 1909, Major David E. Shaw, at his home near Belleair, Florida, situated on the beautiful Bay of Clearwater.
Major Shaw was born in Quincy, Mass. in 1824, but went west in 1850. After passing through many vicissitudes on the frontier he returned to Illinois, where he entered in the U.S. volunteer army on September 24th, 1861, in Company 1, 36th Regiment, Illinois Volunteers. He was present with his regiment at the battle of Pea Ridge, Ark., where he rendered valuable services, for which he received a lieutenant's commission from R. Yates, governor of Illinois. He was a charter member of two G.A.R. posts, also was charter member and W.M. of three different lodges of Masons in this and other states.
He was wounded in the battle of Perryville, Ky., on the 8th of October, 1862. He resigned the United States service and entered the state services of Indiana and was commissioned major by Governor O.P. Morton.
He leaves a wife and two sons, eight grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.
The funeral services were conducted by Rev. R.W. Hines, of Clearwater, at his residence, after which his remains were taken in charge by Clearwater Lodge, No. 127, F. and A.M. and conveyed to the cemetery at Belleair and interred with Masonic honors.---West Hillsborough (Fla.) Press.

Added by the Plaindealer: Major Shaw resided on a farm northeast of Chatsworth for many years and was well known to the older residents of this community. He left here a number of years ago, and had since made his home in Florida.

Re: John Shaw B 1670 D 1722 M Susannah Haworth

"If we are talking the same John Shaw B1670 in England and D 1722 in Bucks Co., PA. His dad was James Shaw B 12-24-1626 Halifax Co., Yorkshire Eng. D 1679 Middleboro, Plymouth Co. Mass. Married to Marcy C. Mitchell 12-24-1652 , Plymouth MA.
His father was John Shaw B 1596 Eng. D 2-15-1688 Plain Dealing, Plymouth Co., Ma. Married to Alice Phillips B 1606 England D 3-6-1564 Plymouth Co. MA. married 1621 Eng. His father was Richard Shaw."

The above is an awful tangle of authentic information and misidentifications. Where to begin? How about with "John Shaw B 1596" and his alleged wife "Alice Phillips"?

The John Shaw who was born 1596 (actually circa 1597) is my mother's direct male-line ancestor. His parents are unknown, as is his place of birth. Whatever his father's name was, it is extremely unlikely to have been "Richard," since that name never appears among his children, grandchildren, or great-grandchildren. He did live at Plain Dealing, but he did not die there, and he did not die in 1688. He actually died about 1663/4, probably at Middleboro, Massachusetts. His wife (perhaps his second wife, and if so not the mother of his children) was named Alice, died 1654 (not 1564), but her maiden name is unknown.

There was a John Shaw in Massachusetts who married an Alice Phillips around this general period of time -- but those are a different John and Alice. The John Shaw who married Alice Phillips was born 1630 in Halifax, England, the son of Abraham Shaw of Halifax.

Now then, my ancestor John Shaw did have a son named Sgt. James Shaw, who was born perhaps circa 1626, presumably in England. James' wife was named Mary Mitchell (not Marcy C. Mitchell -- an impossible name, since English women in those days did not have middle names, and thus she could not have a middle initial), and they had two sons and at least two daughters. Their children were born in the 1650s and 1660s. One of their sons was named John.

However, all of the children of James and Mary died without leaving any surviving issue. This we know because a deed of Nov. 1699 shows James' land in Dartmouth had been inherited by his nephew Lt. Jonathan Shaw. If James had any living children or grandchildren, they would have inherited his land rather than his younger brother's son.

Therefore it is impossible to trace a lineage back to any child of St. James Shaw of Plymouth and Dartmouth, Mass.

Note also that the John Shaw who was born 1670 would have been too young to be one of the children of Sgt. James Shaw. Plus we have the statement that John Shaw was born in England, not Massachusetts.

It is clear, then, that John Shaw, born 1670 in England, who settled in Pennsylvania, could not possibly be the John Shaw, son of Sgt. James Shaw of Massachusetts. No one is descended from James' son John.

It does sound similar but I don't think he was married prior to Elizabeth. So at this point I can't connect him. He died in 1858 and his tombstone says 80 years at the time of death so 1778 or 1779 as DOB I sure. Thanks for your reply!

That's the family. I've picked up some of your Thomas's family from others of that side. I come from this Robert Johnson Shaw. There's also another Robert Johnson Shaw, possibly from Richard's family. Richard seems to be the son of Thomas Shaw and Elizabeth Johnson. The struggle is in going backwards from there. If the other RJ Shaw is Richard's brother, then Thomas may be from Middleton Tyas.

Hey Anne
Wondering if this will reach you and rehashing my Shaw tree. Because of the death cert of Barbara Shaw by husband Alex saying her father was Neil I am still not 100% convinced without evidence that Barbara is actually my Archie and Catherines ....I don't have Archie and Flora having a Barb either...this is Athol Robertsons tree...my Neil 1809 seemed to young to have her.

I did not in Matthews line a Catherine Shaw m Auley Mathews I wonder who she was.
Did your family have picture of Barbara around somewhere, one would think they might. It sure would help to compare to my own - I have recently found more pictures.

Hope all is well
Sherri

Larry, it is very interesting that you have Tackett ancestors. The only Shaw connection that I have is that my brother, Thomas A. Tackett, married Patricia Shaw in California. Thomas and Patricia went to Hawaii to visit her family and just never came back to live in the United States. They had two sons together, before divorcing.

Where are your Tackett family members from? Would be interested in learning a little about them.

Thank you.

Shelby

If you have found 11 children, then the census says that there were 12, but 3 died. There are quite a few Shaw children dying at age 0, in Ulverston, so unless you have checked each one, then one of those babies could be your missing relative. I still think you have found her. There are no Minnie Shaw's registered in the years in question, in Ulverston, which is where the family remained, and where the parents were married, and the children were born.

Thanks again for your help.
I only know of the existence of Minnie because I was given a funeral record relating to her brother Samuel who died in Canada in 1946. This contains references to those of his eleven siblings who were still living – including “Mrs Minnie Norcross of Lancashire”. (She was born in Lancashire and quite possibly had returned there in 1946.)
I have never been able to find any birth record, reference in census records, or any other records relating to her until I found her in the 1911 census. The fact that Agnes Shaw aged 58 born Gleaston, Lancashire was a visitor at the home of Minnie in that census confirmed that I had the “right” Minnie Norcross, the details matching those of her mother.
My failure to find records prior to 1911 census supports the view that Minnie and Martha Jane were one and the same person. There are one or two doubts and complications, however.
There was another Martha Shaw born in Gleaston in 1879 – the daughter of William and Elizabeth, christened 17/12/1879. “My” Martha was the daughter of Thomas and Agnes.
A Martha Jane Shaw, dau of Thomas and Agnes Shaw was christened 28/07/1778 at St Matthews, Dendron.
A Martha Jane Shaw died in Ulverston Q4 1907. She was aged 28, so born 1879
(Gleaston, Aldingham, Dendron and Ulverston are all within the same area.)
The 1911 census record for Thomas Shaw (who also included his wife Agnes on the return –almost certainly an error because she was visiting her daughter) informs us that Thomas and Agnes had 12 children. If Minnie and Martha are the same person I have only 11 names.
Another interesting fact is that the surname of the lodger at the Shaw home in 1881, Fawcett, is the name of the man Audrey Attwood married....so i shall see if i can find any connection.

I am telling you the above because I thought that you maybe interested, not because I am expecting you to spend any more time on my “mystery”.
