Do you happen to have Robert M. Sheaffer b. 1874; d. 1945 in any of your lines...from Ickesburg, but buried in the Sheaffer Valley Church of God Churchyard, Tyrone Township, Perry County, PA. He married to Margaret "Maggie" Amelia Dobysn b. 1894; d. 1942. They had a son Robert L. Sheaffer b. 1913; d. 1994, buried at the Emanuel Lutheran Church, Saville Township, near Ickesburg.

Abner Harman Sheaffer was my great grandfrather's brother. My great grandfather was from Pennsyvania and they moved to Massachusetts. Why did the move to Massachusetts? What is in Chicago? Were they gamblers?

First, I am not a part of the Sheaffer family. However, among my deceased father’s book collection was a ledger book that belonged to Peter Sheaffer, born March 24, 1807 . On the same fronting page in the ledger he lists several other family members’ information: to wit –

Jamimah Sheaffer May 17, 1842

Columbus Sheaffer December 27, 1843

George W Sheaffer July 31, 1847, with an otherwise unassociated date of 1847 immediately below the birth date. I assume that this refers to a child who died within a short time after birth. The two year entries of “1847 appear to be written in pencil, while the rest of these entries are in ink. (Actually, the first 1847 is half ink (“18”) and half pencil (“47”) and the second entry is totally in pencil. Also, the penciled “47” is in a different hand – the penciled figures are differently formed than the ink entries.

Catharine Elizabeth Anna Sheaffer March 4, 1856

Sarah Allas Sheaffer August 6, 1858

Mr. Peter Sheaffer Born March 24, 1807

Mrs. Elizabeth Sheaffer was born 1817 and died Nov 4th 1885 Aged 68 years 11 months and 4 days.

The last two entries in the above list are written in blue pencil.

The rest of the ledger is primarily account records with individuals from November 20, 18 44 (Daniel Foose) to May 14, 18 69 (Elias Trostle). One later page is headed “1872 David Sweager”, but contains no other entry of any sort.
Also, page 17 contains a record of four payments to Elizabeth Sheaffer in 1876 and 1877, totaling $441.39.

In the back of the ledger is another list of births:

Harry H. Sheaffer born September 7, 1868

Maisy E. Sheaffer born July 15, 1870

William O. Sheaffer born January 17, 1872

Charles E Sheaffer born October 16, 1873

Aniy (?) Sheaffer born September 18, 1875 This first name is not clear. With a blue pencil it was later “edited” directly over the first name with what appears to be “rùe”, with a left leaning accent over the “u”.

Clarence J Sheaffer born October 30, 1878

David Sheaffer born October 30, 1878

The above two are twins. Perhaps David died before the age of 7, based on the entry below.

David G Sheaffer born August 14, 1885

My father probably came by this book at an estate sale in the Elizabethton, PA area. I am looking to restore it to its family, since it will mean much more to the family than to me. Is there any chance that your Eliza Rice bore a child named George W. Sheaffer on July 31, 1847 and, perhaps this same child died shortly after? I have a record of family births tht lists this date of birth, when your Eliza would have been 26.

With one exception, all these births are recorded from 1842 and later.

I am trying to find a proper home for this original record of Sheaffer family records.

If he was born anytime after 1750, it's most likely he was born in Lancaster or Berks. Most of the Sheaffers immigrated before 1750. I come from two different lines. One going back to a John Sheaffer, born 1782 and the other going back to a Nathaniel Shaeffer (spelling according to tombstone), born 1766. I know where both are buried, just not sure who they're parents were. John lived in Warwick in Rothsville and Nathaniel in Leacock, near Leola. Have you come across Nathaniel before at all? Or who his wife Rebecca was?

What year did your John die in? I think mine died in 1857 or 1867. I'm thinking 1867. I don't have the date with me right this second. And I know he was born in 1782. Married Elizabeth Keitt. He also had a son Peter in 1813/1814. He may had had a son Adam, but I'm not real sure.

There was a Peter Sheaffer, born around that time in Lancaster, PA who was a Revolutionary War vetern. He was the son of George Balzer Sheaffer (born in Germany). But this one lived until the 1840's and died in PA. Probably not the same one, but I just thought I'd throw that out there! Anna

I've seen that there were other Sheaffers in North Middleton, but I don't know of the relation. Also, aside from John, I couldn't find any of John's parents/siblings in North Middleton in the 1870 census. John B. Sheaffer married Susanna "Susan" Thumma in 1869. Susan was a native of North Middleton and was the daughter of Abraham Thumma and Elizabeth Shaw. Eventually John and Susan settled in Enhaut, Dauphin Co., PA where John worked as a contractor.

Seeking info on a Peter Sheaffer. I believe he was born around 1755, married, and had a son John. I'm thinking John was born in PA in 1782 and married an Elizabeth Keitt. Both John and Elizabeth are buried in Jerusalem Lutheran Cemetery, Rothsville PA. I have nothing on Peter, but looking for info on him. His family may have lived in Warwick Twp, Lancaster Co, PA. As there are two Peters in that twp in 1790. I'm also guessing Peter died after 1820.

Hanna belle was one of 5 children born to mary Louise & William Allen Fry. William died during the Civel War of typhoid fever. This was I think 1863. Two of the children died within the same year also of thypoid fever.That left Hanna & 2 brothers. Hanna & john had 3 living children. Myrtle, Bessie,*(my grandmoyher) & George Roy Allen; your side of the family.I would have to dig in my papers for more details. This might be old news Since I e- mailed you over a year ago. I was born & raised in Junction City, Ks. but left there over 50 years ago. Hopr on of Roy's side of the family picks up your mail.

I have started working on my Sheaffer side of the family and have a few names:
Edwarad Shaeffer, born Aug, 1872 in Clearport, OH; Emmanuel Shaeffer, born 1844 in Ohio; Joab Shaeffer, born 1815, possibly Ohio or PA; Isaac Shaeffer, born 1771 in PA; Abraham Shaeffer, born PA around 1746.

Sorry for missing this post Pat. None of those names are in my files. The only other people with similar names are a Margaret (Crane) Shaffer and a Mrs. Maude Shaffer. The name Shaffer may me misspelled. It could be:

Abner Harman Sheaffer and Annie Baer would be my great-grandparents and Edward would be my great-uncle. He was born in Holyoke and I know from family stories about his death in Illinois. I do have a picture of Annie Baer who died in 1925. Abner died around 1910. I actually have quite of bit of information on the Baer side of the family going back a few hundred years.

Your Abraham could possibly be one in the same as mine.
On his tombstone he's Abraham..but on the funeral home record of his son George , he is George Schaeffer..
The spelling depended on who was spelling..and actually Abraham's last name is spelled different on his stone as to his wife's right next to it.
And then somewhere along the line a fight occured between the family over one marrying a person of a different religion and they changed the spelling of theirs..from Schaeffer to Schaffer.
Let me know if you think there is a definate connection..and maybe if your Abraham went missing..then he could be him.

Joanne, My ancestors were from the York Springs area of Adams County Pennsylvania. There are three generations of Abraham Shaffer. (Spelling change from Scheaffer to Shaffer thought to have been made approx 1850-60.) I do not have record of an Edward and no one was in the Schuykill Co., area that we know of. My Abraham Shaffer was born 09-05-1812. I have a list of brothers and sisters, but no Edward. Let me know if you think this is worth pursuing. I am very much interested in any other information on Abraham Shaffer.
