Everyone I've made contact with has hit the same block - I'm beginning to wonder if they emigrated from somewhere or if their name was different prior to Magnus Shearer.

I have a Peter Shearer c.1803, one of eleven children to Thomas Shearer (1706) and Margaret Skea (1768) - I assume this is the match you're referring to?

Amie

I have the 'Kellenbergers and Shearers' book. My great grandfather was Silas Shearer, son of Catherine McCord and Jacob Michael Shearer. There are some errors in the book with regard to children belonging to Catherine McCord Shearer. She was married to Jacob Michael Shearer and after he died in a farm accident, she married his brother Andrew III.
Elizabeth Jane SHENKLE, Silas' wife was my great grandmother
James Garfield, son of Silas and Elizabeth was my grandmother, Orrie's brother. There is a Civil War book about Silas, 'DEAR COMPANION'. My mother, Alice lived to be 101, died in 2009.
Shearer - Costa Rica

I am looking for information on James William Shearer AKA Jaime Guillermo Shearer, who was present in Costa Rica in and around 1913.

This James William Shearer was married to Rosalia Saenz Hernandez, a Costa Rican woman, and they had a son also called James William (Jaime Guillermo) Shearer, born in San Juan Costa Rica in April 1913.

James William Senior may have been born in or otherwise associated with the area of Beeville/Skidmore Texas. This is a piece of guess-work based on his son's claim of the family having been from the area.

James William Senior's mother's maiden name was Douglas.

I believe that James William Senior worked in Costa Rica for the United Fruit Company, but I have had no luck so far in tracing their employment records.

Any assistance would be gratefully received!!!

Penny
penny@kingandwilson.com
Shearer - Help needed!!!

I'm trying to trace my nan's tree but am having no luck as it seems there are more than a few skeletons in this closet!

Violet Ruby (Doris?) b Aug 1918 (wedding certificate says she was 25 in 1947 though) born in Albert Road, Leytonstone (West Ham) London (Essex)- cannot find any birth details for her, married Arthur Peters in 1947 and died in 1999.

Siblings (am unable to find any birth details for most of them): Charles, Eddie (Edward), Peggy (Margaret), Rose, Leonard (born 1920 in Rochford, mothers maiden name Nottage which if I remember rightly was the name on nan's birth certificate!), + another brother who's name I do not know.

Father I believe was Alfred John Shearer who had died by 1947 when she got married (he is listed on Violets marriage certificate as a fruit merchant, but had possible been in the army (have exhausted the military searches). Their mothers name I believe is Ethel.

At some point it looks like there has been a name change, but several names are looking likely including Nottage and Lee....

The family moved around quite a bit, and lived in London, Essex and Kent. Ethel and several of the children settled in Southend, Violet in Luton where she died in 1999. The other siblings died prior to this.

Unfortunately, no living relatives are able to bare any light on this and am unable to find the birth certificate, only the marriage certificate (one of the witnesses was an M A Macdonald, and the wedding was at Luton Registry Office).

Does this sound familiar to anyone, or any of the names I have listed (I believe the children would have all been born between 1905-25)? Any help would be gratefully received.

Thank you!

Re: Shearer - Help needed!!!

Hi Mel, I thought you would have the information now as your posting was a few years ago. As for am I a Shearer. I think I am but cannot prove it. I believe my great grandfather was John Shearer son of Anthony. He got together with my great grandmother Rach(a)el Thorn (widowed 1853) and they a baby girl Maria Jane b 1857. Her birth cert. shows she was the daughter of Rachel Shearer, formerly Thorn, nee Wright and John Shearer.Coal Porter. (I have not found a Marry.Cert. for Rachel and John.) Unfortunately Maria died 1860 aged 3 years but the death cert.shows her as daughter of Rachel Thorn, Needlewoman, no mention of a father at all. When Maria died Rachel was 7 months pregnant with my grandfather. He was born same address that Maria died.My Grandfather William's Birth Cert.shows father as John Thorn but I think it is John Shearer. Rachel also had another baby girl in 1863 and called her Maria Jane again with John Thorn shown as the father. Again I think John Shearer is the dad. How many men would want his baby to be called after a baby Rachel had with another man. I have no information at all on John Shearer after the 1841 census until 1891 when he is in the Hackney Union Workhouse and in HU Infirmary 1901 where he died 27th August 1901 (Have death cert). I have seen a photo of Henry Shearer and he looks so like my grandfather!
Have you any info on John please? Be wonderful if you had
Glo

Hi Glo.... thanks for your reply, I have managed to piece things together as Edith was married before getting together with Alfred (married name Want), so Violet was listed as 'Want' rather than Shearer (although, she was actually a Shearer!). Have managed to go back to Anthony Shearer (1790ish-1848). Does this fit with your info, and are you a Shearer? Thanks, Mel

I come from the infamous Caleb Sherar through his son DeLorma. DeLorma's daughter, Della, married Joshua Hendrix and they were my great grandparents. Caleb was the oldest son of John Henry and Isabella. Where did we find the Stratton surname for Isabella? I was able to go back to Nicholville, NY about 5 years ago and searched the cemetery there. We found 2 other children of John Henry and Isabella, Margaret who died at 12 and Henry who died at 10. That brought the number of children to 9, that I have found. Has anyone found the family in Ireland or Scotland yet? What made Thomas Duke and Joanna move to Texas, I wonder? Joanna didn't seem to live too long after they moved there. I think I saw on a census that he had remarried and had at least 1 other child. I also wonder why other family members seemed to raise James' and Eliza's youngest children while they were still alive. It makes me feel we should all keep journals so our posterity will know why we did all the things we did. I would love to learn what else you have on the family.

Hi, sorry this is long after your post. I am a descendant of Magnus Shearer. My great grandmother born 1862 Paisley, Scotland was married to Robert Stewart. George Munro was her father, George b. 1823 married Mary Shearer in May of 1849. Mary's father was John Shearer and Ann Leask mother. Thomas Shearer b. 1760 and Margaret Skea were John's parents. Magnus b. 1740 was Thomas Shearer born 1760-father. I too can not find anymore information on Magnus Shearer. And as far as I know Thomas is Kathren Heddel (Heddle) children. I found this information from a Orkney, Shetlands Island Genealogy site. I habe copies of Birth record to note Magnus is Thomas's father. Good luck hope you have found more info by if so feel free to pass it on thx

Don't know how true their story was but that what I found out.
