Re: Were does are name come from?

No-one seems interested in answering where our name comes from so here goes:
It is tempting to think that the name Shears has an occupation connotation like Hunter or Tucker but that is not very likely. The very large number of variations suggest that the more probable origin is the Old English (Anglo Saxon) word scir which would have been pronounced ‘sheer’ and it had two distinct shades of meaning: the first meaning ‘bright’ or ‘gleaming’ as in ‘sheer fabrics’ or in place names such as Shearwater, Shirwell or Sherborne which was originally spent ‘Scirburn’. The other meaning suggested ‘county’ as in modern ‘shire’. Another OE word ‘scieran’ had a sense of ‘to cut’ and became the modern word ‘shear’. The first of these seems to be most likely source of our name and which led to so many variations and its reference would be to hair colouring i.e. light hair. (Might that be a Viking?)

The spelling of names has always been capricious, mainly because the majority of the population were illiterate and those who could write spelled as they heard. Thus the first names in the series would have been Shear, Shere, Sheere, Sheir, Shier, Shire, Schire, Shyre, Shyer etc. At a fairly early stage the alternations with a ‘s’ on the end would have appeared, as a mark of familiarity or affection. These spellings would have been influences by regional accents and even as late as the middle of the 19th century Shears was very much more common in Devon for instance than in Yorkshire where Shires was the prevalent form. It seems that as the name moved further north the pronunciation became disyllabic giving rise to forms such as Shiress, Shirres, Shirras, Sherris and any other permutation with one or two r’s and one or two s’s and alternations of ‘i’ with ‘e’ and occasionally ‘a’. These are the prevalent forms in Scotland. Ignoring geographical distribution, during the century 1750 - 1850, of all those ending in ‘s’ by far the most common was Shires (about 28%) followed by Shears (about 19%). In USA Shear is more common that Shears.

There are currently a little over 3000 Shears living in England and Wales, approximately 10% of those in south Devon, and there are approximately 3500 Shears in USA with about 10% of those in California. There are probably two in Eire and one family in Northern Ireland. There appear to be no Shears living in Scotland.

The busiest centre in Devon was and still is Brixham (a fishing port)and there are significant nuclei of Shears in most ports up as far as Hartlepool on the east coast and Bangor on the west coast, clearly suggesting that these were seamen, probably fishermen, moving further afield seeking work. This can be confirmed by tracing ancestry of residents of some of these places. However there are significant nuclei away from the coast, at Salisbury, Rugby and Chertsey in particular.
I belong to the Chertsey lot that moved into SW London.

The next question is “How did they get there?”

I agree Jessa,

I've checked my research on Virginia and all Census reports relate that she was born about 1858 or 1859. That would match the 1860 Census and make her the daughter of Robert Shears. Strange ---- that's who I spent hours working years ago and dropped it thinking maybe John (Juan) was his brother. Now I need to find out why Virginia ended up with the Garlands instead of Robert and his new wife.

I studied the Cortina War quite a bit while I was in the area. It's quite interesting. Rice Garland (my grandfather) fled to Matomoras from New Orleans after getting caught writing a fraudulent bank draft They lived in Matamoras and then moved to Brownsville when it was created n 1851. He was a lawyer and had a part to play in the development of the City. I believe he lawyered some for Charles Stillman. Contact between Garland and Shears would have been easy since
Garland was the second Judge of Cameron County.

That's what I'm attempting to find out. My 3 great grandparents adopted Virgina Montez G. Shears prior to 1870. She lived with them until she married in 1890 in Galveston. Her descendants still have much of the Garland relics as well as their own. It's a great history and I'm attempting to piece it back together.

Wayne

You're welcome! It's possible we may have a match. I was never able to find out what the initials stood for, but I believe Robert and his wife C. Shears ended up divorced shortly after their marriage as he remarried.

It wasn't uncommon in Mexico for the baptism records to be incorrect when it came to the parents, especially the father's. Carmen may have possibly said any name for propriety [in this case if she stated Juan, it's quite funny considering Robert started the Juan Cortina wars in Brownsville].

As far as I'm aware, I haven't found any Garland family members in my tree. It's possible that the G was part of the mother's last name [as they usually have about three to four last names in Mexico].

Jessa.

Thanks for jumping in. My remembrance was that I could not connect Virginia to the Shears family who were dwelling in Brownsville at the time. The Frank Cushman Collection that includes the baptism records of the church in Matamoras states that Virginia was baptized in 1863 and that she was the daughter of Juan Shears and Carmen Montez. I was just provided a 1860 Census for Cameron County listing Robert Shears with a 22 year wife C. Shears and a 1 year old daughter V. Shears. Do you happen to know who they are? I realize that it could be Virginia but if would mean that she was 4 when Baptized in Mexico and her father's name does not match.

Virginia Montez G. Shears also carried that G in her name. We thought that perhaps Shears had a tie to the Garland family that would explain the adoption but I have not been able to find it. We also have a record that she wrote family in Kentucky.

Wayne

Everyone is always waiting for any answers to their posts!

What a great way to start out! To discover how close a match you have to the others! Sure hope it works out you're all related.

I don't fit in as my way back grandpa was a Shears/Shars/Shares (from all spellings I've found connected to him)from NY State.

Ruth

Hi Nan,

Looks like a match! Isaac Miller and Ann Shears are my Great Great Grandparents. Their children were Francis (Frank) M. Miller (M. Miza McKay) and that's the only one I know of positively.

The 1850 census has a daughter Cimantha A. Miller listed but I haven't been able to find anything more on her. A fellow McKay researcher said she has an Alfred Miller listed in the family bible as dying in 1936 with nothing noted as to relationship.

The 1850 Census also shows the Shears/Shars, Cyrus Pringle and the Millers all living in a group. Isaac was also a witness for Lucinda Shears marriage.

I'm afraid you know much more than I do about the Shears/Shars.

Ruth

NY, then Canada, and then in Port Huron Co. Michigan. Their children included: Ann Shears (m. Isaac Miller, m. Nelson Fox); Lucinda Shears (m. Cyrus Pringle); Charles Reuben Shears (m. Kathryn Cave, m. Martha J. Unknown, m. Bessie Engle); John Shears; twins Theadore Shars (m. Maggie Unknown, m. Elizabeth Margaret Bennett); Theadosia Shears (m.
Edward/Cynthia. My name is Keith Harry Shears. I am new to this and I don’t know whether I am to late to send a message. I noticed on the posting On the 5 Sept 2002 that Cynthia mentions her father being Thomas Shears and that he had two brothers Jack and Charles and two sisters Nell and Bess all born in Fulham. My father Harry Shears born in Fulham had two brothers and two sisters Jack, Charles, Nell and Bess, bit of a coincidence! all of which came from Fulham as did most of my immediate family. Could it be that you are not aware of Harry (my father) and I of your father (Thomas) it would appear that they could be brothers and I have an uncle and a cousin that I did not know about

My relationship to the Shears family is thru the marriage of my Great aunt Jane Munger. If your family is any of those from the Ottawa County Michigan then perhaps we do have some connection. There are several Shears family researchers who have extensive records on this family. They frequent this board and if you post a request for information they are sure to respond.

I come from the aformentioned Robert Shears line. I'm not 100% sure, but I don't think that the other Shears in Brownsville at that time is related to Robert's line as Robert's brother William H. stayed in Ky. There is another William Shears in Brownsville at that time though [b. 1869, Texas (1930 Census)] and there was a Virginia attached to that record.

Hopefully that helps you!

Last August my grandmother passed away and I inherited an old photo album. I so far cannot connect any of the photos to my family. Two of the photos are of "Mead" and "Dave" "Shears". These pictures are on card stock and look to be from the 1860s. Both men appear to be roughly 20 years old in the pictures.

My grandmother's family was from Wichita Kansas, Enid, Tulsa and Wewoka Oklahoma. It just seems like these photos should have some connection to your Shears family.

I would be glad to share the photos, Perhaps you can help me understand who these young men are?

I'm afraid I don’t have any other information about him but I would be very grateful if you could post this email on your website to see if anyone can help!

Many thanks

Sophie

PS If you have any information please email fred@jag10.freeserve.co.uk
Re: Shears Family of Fayette Boyle County, Ky

I have found that my son-in-law's family is related to the Shears of Fayette Co., KY. Robert Shears went to Brownsville, Texas and has MANY descendants on both sides of the boarder. I believe a brother may have come with him, William (there's a surprise) as, if I recall correctly, there is another Shears in Brownsville at the same time.

Hello, Edward.

I am a Shears by marriage, but will give you the information I know. I'm afraid I don't have much since my husband's father never talked much about his family history.

My husband is Paul Vernon Shears, DOB: July 1955, in Waukegan, Rural Shields TWP, Lake County, IL in the US Naval Hospital, Great Lakes, IL. His father was Roy (originally Leroy) Vernon Shears, who was born in Idaho in 1919. Mother was Lillian Ingeborg Dale (originally Rosendal), DOB: May 1916. Both parents are deceased. Paul had an older sister, Janice Shears who died of heart surgery complications before he was born.

Paul has one daughter from a previous marriage, Dawn Marie Shears, who lives in CA. We haven't heard from her since the late 1980s so I'm not able to give much on her.

I hope this will be of interest. We weren't aware of the Shears name being originally English. Paul thought it was Dutch. Thanks to this site, I'm able to start putting my and his history together. :-)

Thank you Edward and everyone else for your information and time. Barbara (Dodson) Shears OH,USA
