I have learnt some more. Martin's father was Laurence Sheerin (married to Margaret Doolan/Dowling in Killucan, Co Westmeath). Laurence's father was Martin too. My Greta grandfather Martin Sheerin was born in 1866, had three brothers, Thomas who may have gone to Boston in 1887(can see him in census in Boston in 1910), living on Broadway in South Boston. another brother John probably went to New York and a third brother Patrick- I do not know yet.

Hello Paul and Christine,

Lovely to hear from you. Yes, Pat did tell me about you. First, I just want to say how shocked and saddened I was to hear that Terry had passed away. I just found out last October when I was home for our sister-in-law, Yvonne's, funeral. Please pass along my deepest sympathy. I have very fond memories from when we were young and our Gran used to take me and Pat to visit Uncle Jimmy and Auntie Nora. One memory particulary stands out of Terry, Pat and I taking the train into London and actually going into Westminster Abby among other places. I don't remember how old we were but I think was about ten which would make them twelve and thirteen, Terry was a year older than Pat. Can you imagine that happening today?

Regarding Henry Sheeran - I have a few details about him:-
1. Copy of his Record of Service, WW1
2. Medals awarded - Victory and British. Liverpool Regiment, Labour Corp.
3. Merchant Navy info. He was on the Oropesa in 1922 and on the Aquitania in 1919.
4. Two desertion reports - first one in New York, from the Oropesa, in August, 1922 and the second time was in Wellington, N.Z. from the Westmoreland in February, 1923.
5. A very good quality photograph if him from the Southampton Archives.

This is as far as I have been able to trace him so far. I'm not giving up, yet. There has to be information on him somewhere. I will send you copies of all of the above if you wish. I also have a copy of Henry and Annie's marriage certificate that I will send as well if you would like. Our e-mail address is thomas.donohue@rogers.com.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Best wishes,
Irene.

Hi Irene,

I'm afraid we're not very active in looking for Henry Edward these days, but thought I must reply today, as it is the anniversary of both of our postings!
We are still very interested in finding out what became of him, but appear to have run out of idea's over the years.
I posted the original request on behalf of my wife, Christine (nee Sheeran), as Henry is also her long lost grandfather.
No doubt Pat has updated you as to who we actually are, and hopefully we can communicate at length by some other means?

Regards,

Paul.

You have certainly lit up my eyes just now finding the information that you have written - god luv ya! I'm so excited, I'm shaking. If you can get onto my family tree - Gibson/Short/Curtis/Lowe/Swords Family Tree - you will see that she is my great great great grandmother on my mothers side - whew, that's a mouthful ! The only information I have at present is what's on the tree. You are more than welcome to email me - I am in Sydney. Regards Julie

I am trying to trace the family of a kathleen Sheerin, who left the UK for America(?) in 1960 ish. She would have been born in around 1930, as she was about the same age as my mother. She worked in a private house called Glingerbank in Cumbria, having arrived there from ireland. My 82 year old mum would love to know what happened to her. prior to England, she lived at Cullingtree Road in Belfast. can anyone shed any light on her disappearance after she left England for the states?

Shearing in Australia

Hi,

Been on Ancestry for a while, but only discovered an Irish link recently - different spelling, too. I am a descendant of Margaret Frances Shearing aka Fanny Shearing. Fanny was born London 1829 and emigrated as a house servant, landing in Sydney in 1848 on the ship General Hewitt. She married John William Eames in 1850. They lived at Beechworth in Victoria, Australia where John was a gold miner. (The great 1850s gold rush in Australia!) John was born in Lewisham Kent 1822. John's parents were blacksmith Edward Eames and wife Sarah.

To get back to the Shearings, Fanny's Dad was a blacksmith, too - James Shearing born about 1805. He died sometime between 1836-1851, presumably in London. He may have been one of the Irish Shearings/Sheerins. Fanny's Mum and James' wife was Margaret nee Reaching born Cork Ireland about 1808 died Wandsworth 1880. They married in 1828 (St Luke's Old Charlton Kent). As well as Fanny they had Mary Ann (b. 1831 m. William Field in Wandsworth 1860.) John b. 1833 and Martha b. 1836.

Does anyone have any information about James Shearing/Sheerin or other members of this family? Would love to hear from you.
KR
Janet Lancaster Australia

My grandfather was Martin Sheerin born in Westmeath around 1870, possibly 1874. The first concrete trace I have is the 1901 census, when he was living in Portrane, Co Dublin as an attendant at the asylum there. His eldest child was named Lawrence which be the same as his father's name.

Any help?

Hello Paul,

Are you still actively searching for Henry Edward Sheeran (or Henry Thomas Sheeran)? Henry Sheeran was my grandfather, born 1892 in Liverpool. He was a Merchant Seaman and I think I have found him on the "Aquitania", a Cunard line ship, sailing from Liverpool via Brest to New York in February, 1919. He disappeared also. Could he be the same person you are looking for? We have only been on Ancestry for six months and have never checked the message board before.

Hope to hear from you soon.

Regards,
Irene.

Without checking my papers I can say this is the one and same Mary Sheerin!! My father (John Murphy who died last year )remembered Granny Murphy. She smoked a clay pie and could spoke the gaelic. Ive a photo of her and Nellie.
Thomas Murphy was married twice. His first wife was Annie Shee(?)(nee Haggerty)They were married 6.10.1892 in High st Glasgow They lived with his parents John and Margaret (Slaven)Annie was found dead at 24 Harvie St Glasgow ( no where near her house) I have Marys d.cert. She died of senility 18.9.1951 at her home in Forbes St Glasgow aged 76.So she must have been born in1875 and married when 26-7? Her parents were Edward and Mary nee Naughton. he was a farmer. My aunt says that they came from Killasa in Co. Mayo but we dont know anything more. I can trace the Murphys back to the 1850s in Glasgow. Prior to that they were in Ireland.
James Murphy (son )b 1913 died in Tunisia 4.6.43(w.w.2)Thos was b 27.6.1872 d. 7.9.1941 of leukaemia. My grandfather Thomas(Pop) was born 5.3.1902. His birth cert shows Mary & Thos date of marrage 30.4.1901. Pop was born in 11 Tarbet St. 5.3.1902, which was near High St Glasgow.
Hope this has been of some use - If you want more info re the Murphys from Glasgow let me know.
Do you live in Scotland? How are we related if Mary was my gt gmother?
Regards Marianne Murray nee Murphy

I have a copy of the marriage certificate. There can't be too many T Murphys of the same dates marrying the same Mary!!!! On the cert it shows 30/4/1901 marriage and staying at 11 Tarbet St, Glasgow.Marys parents are shown as Edward Sheeran and Bridget Sheeran and her maiden name is difficult to make out but could be ending in ... ton. , Thomas is also shown as a widower. Now there is a twist as the family think she was an orphan and come over from Ireland in 1900 as a 16 year old, but she is 27 when she marries.Thomas, James , Hugh, Edward and Nellie were the children.
Shirleyhm@talktalk.net-e-mail me .

Re: re-sheerin family

I'm from the Sheerin family in Manchester. My grandfather was Edward Cornibeer Sheerin (sister Doris Sheerin)and he was married to a Florence (obviously a different one) . They had two children, Edward (my dad)and Eunice. There aren't that many Sheerins in Manchester although the Sheerins in the UK are all found in the Lancashire/Manchester area. I tried to look in the Irish phonebook as to where the greatest concentration of Sheerins are (aside from Dublin) to get a fix on a place that may have been the origin of the name but Mayo, Meath, Donagal and Limerick were all about the same. I've recently started my investigation but does anyone have a fix on where the Sheerin family appears to have most likely started from?

Hello Wendy. William S was born in co. Limerick c.1813 and m. Catherine Duggan (b. co.Cork c.1813).By 1838 they were living in Bermondsey (London/Surrey) where the name is recorded nine different ways. My ancestor Patrick Henry S was probably his brother and b (Ireland) c.1809. By 1834 he was also in Bermondsey where he m. Hannah Mulcahy. William and Patrick MAY have come from the Croom area. Patrick's grandson William (my g-grandfather) had a distinguished career in local politics and was Mayor of Bermondsey 1917/18.
Does anyone reading this know of these people?
Hello Lynda. This may not be of much help to you but I have a William S who was born c.1812/13 in Co. Limerick and m. Catherine Duggan (b. Co. Cork c.1813) By 1838 they were living in Bermondsey (London/Surrey). I believe my ancestor, Patrick Henry S was his brother. He was born c.1809 and was also in Bermondsey by 1834 when he m. Hannah Mulcahy (b. Ireland). It is possible that William and Patrick MAY have come from the Croom area of Co. Limerick. In England William's family (for example) had its name recorded nine different ways! A nightmare to trace. Patrick's grandson William (my greatgrandfather) had a distinguished career in local politics and was Mayor of Bermondsey 1917/18.
Does anyone reading this know of these people, please?

Bridget Hayden and William Sheerin 1923

I have received information that my great grandfathers sister, Bridget Hayden, b. 1880 (Liverpool, we think), daughter of Francis Hayden and Ellen Quirk, may have married a William Sheerin in West Derby Liverpool in the 3rd quarter of 1923. Further digging found a Thomas Sheerin born a year later, his mother was a Hayden. We are hoping that this is our Bridget, her older siblings were sent to Canada in 1883 as British Home Children after the death of their father Francis at 27 Blake St. Liverpool on Christmas Eve1882. If anyone knows of any of these names, please reply. Thank you, Tami

I have an Ann Sheerin (1836-1903) married John Maguire in County Tyrone about 1860 and moved almost immediately to the Boston area before relocating to NYC in the mid 1860s where she died. Husband was from Maguire's Bridge, County Fermanagh and her parents were Thomas and Ann Sheerin, origins unknown.
She is said to have had a sister Ellen who married a man named Kane in the Boston area, and another sister Jane. A Thomas W. Sheerin (1833-1900) also lived in Boston but his relationship is unknown. Any matches?

Sheerins in Missouri and Texas

I had a ggf, James J. Sheerin who ended up in Missouri, He marries Catherine Philomena Claire Lynch. They had five sons--four of which survived infancy, Edward (b. 1898), Charles (b. 1895) John Joesph [my gf] (b. 1893, d. 1952), James J. (b. 1903), and (Dan b. and d. 1900).

I am trying to find any information about them. I have no Idea who my ggf parents were or why they ended up in Missouri. I don't know what happened to the children, other than my grandfather.

Thanks you.
