tina:
I am sorry I didn't get back to you, My mother in law and I were very much planning to come to west virginia to look up family history. Unfortunely and with deep sadness, we had lost mom in 2001. Then my husband and I moved to georgia about 5 months afterward, and I haven't done anything in the way of family history since. I am starting up again, because I really want my grandchildren to know who they are part of. I guess I can start with the name Oscar Blake Sheets, and somewhere when I dig up what I have will be the name Plants. If you are still interested, I can sent the names of moms children and dates.
I am so sorry again for not keeping on this, but as usual life shows up and throws us off course some times. Hope to hear from you soon.
Betty Johnson

Hi Gloria, thank you for your reply to my query. I see that someone else sent a reply to your post before I had a chance to do so. I assume from your post that your friend at work is related to my family? I'd like to get in touch w/your friend to share the family history w/her. She's welcome to contact me directly at my personal mailing address. Would you please ask her for me? I'd really appreciate the opportunity to share family information w/your friend & to know more about my family too, as I know very little about this part of my family. My wife & I started researching my family history together about six years ago. Thank you for your help, John

Not my family, but the marriage is on the free Illinois Marriage Index through the Illinois State Archives; apparently occurred in DeWitt Co.

Put in Williams, L as the groom and it will come up...spelled Lafayett in the index. The index will give you the book and page number so you can obtain the original.

I am looking for any information about his sister Carrie Mae Sheets, my grandmother, any info of were she lived after being orphaned.
Also any info on the accident that killed Bob and Nora would also be great.

While I have been an Ancestry member for about 1-1/2 years, I just started my husband's tree and have much work to do.

I have added your fact that James signed up to serve in the Civil War at Menard County, IL. and that he died in a battle at Peach Tree Creek in Georgia in 1864.

Sheets is a more common surname than most people realize. There is no one "line" - see the Sheets Surname DNA project at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/sheets/ for details about the various family groups that have been confirmed through DNA. Most families carrying the name seem to have Germanic origins, often derived from names similar to Schutz (with an umlaut). It seems to have been an occupational name, similar to "rifleman," which helps explain its frequency. I've always found it interesting that there were several men carrying the surname in early America who were gunsmiths (although my earliest ancestor was a hatter).

There are multiple ways to spell the name. Some say there are some English families, perhaps more likely spelled Sheats and meaning "living on a knob or hill," but I'm not aware of any that have definitively traced their family to England (doesn't mean there aren't/weren't some families there; just that I don't know about them since I'm mostly interested in the Pennsylvania German lines).

The Wyandotte Co. marriage records, 1859-1918, have been microfilmed by the LDS Family History Library. You should be able to order the microfilm for a small fee to view at a local Family History Center. Assuming she is the mother of the oldest child (age 5 in 1880 census), they likely married about 1873-1874.

Or you might try contacting the Trowbridge Research Library - Google for the details.

Barbara Ann is the mother of my Aunt's mother-in-law. I gave up researching this line for my aunt several years ago when I kept hitting a brick wall. I just started working on this family again last week and discovered her first name was Barbara.

THANK YOU for the death index lookup! Her daughter Lu was living in Martin county and remained there until her death. I live fairly close and you've given me an excellent clue to continue the search!

I agree with your assessment on Ancestry family trees since I have discovered many inconsistencies when compared to my own research/documentation. They have been helpful though since I have been able to rule out some and that narrows down the possibilities.

Thanks again!
Kathy

The information you have provided is more or less consistent with Barbara Sheets, b. 1849, daughter of Daniel Sheets (1810-1884) and Adaline Wilson. According to at least one online tree at Ancestry, she died in 1935 in Martin Co., MN.

Ancestry Public Trees are notoriously in error, although they can provide clues. Unfortunately, I don't have time right now to wade into this deeper, but I will tell you that some of those trees say that this Daniel Sheets is the son of my ancestors, Andrew Sheets and Lydia Sigafoos while others say he is the son of John Sheets and Mary Peterson.

While I can't provide proof yet, I can pretty much assure you that while my Andrew and Lydia (Sigafoos) Sheets did have a son named Daniel, he was *not* this Daniel.

Sherri, I believed I talked to you on the phone. This is just to complete the posting for others. Jerusha Jane Dunn is my G-Grandfather David Harvey Dunn's older sister. She was born in Washington County, Ohio in 1843 to Samuel Dunn and Lucy M (Ellis) Dunn. Samuel moved his family to Atchison Co. Kansas from Wesley Twp Washington County, Ohio in 1853. They spent two years enroute stopping Iowa where they are recorded on the 1855 Iowa State Census along with Calvin Sheets. They apparently moved together to Atchison County and Jerusha then married Calvin Sheets.

Maryann,

I've not done "real" research in PA that early, but I briefly checked the FHL Card Catalog, and it appears there are deeds back to the late 1600s. You should be able to order the microfilm for a small fee and use it at a local Family History Center, plus there are numerous published abstracts of early Bucks records, including deeds. Use the old FHL catalog and search by place at:

http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.a...

In addition, the Pennsylvania State Archives has images of several of their early land warrant registers and surveys online. A good place to start if you find you're dealing with original grants rather than resale deeds is:

http://www.phmc.state.pa.us/bah/dam/rg/rg17.htm#Surveys

Be sure to also click on the Land Records link/tab in the upper right hand corner for additional information.

Connie
I found John Emerick Nunnemacker's will on the Buck's county site (it changed since you posted the link--but I found it. thank you)

It look like John's wife Judith inherited the land prior to their marriage. It also looks like the will was executed in Buck's Co, but John lived in Rock Hill which was Huntingdon Co. If the land went to Judith prior to the marriage then it would have been pre 1735+-. Do you know what land or land grant records are available for that era for Buck's Co? I am assuming that Judith was an only child or at the very least had no brothers for the land to pass to her. Her father was most likely one of the first settlers, had land granted to him and he died widowed, with no sons. From that record, we could get Judith's maiden name and her father's name. I am in MA and don't know what records are available. You've done quite a bit of Sheetz research and I'd like your thoughts.
Thank you
Maryann Flaherty

Hi Connie, thanks for your notes. I found Jacob listed on Ollie's death certificate and it was my great grandmother Elizabeth who was the informant listed. My grandmother has dementia and hasn't been any help at all with any of my research.

Could it be a Jacob that is older then Caroline, thus them not marrying and we are missing the connection? I am a rookie at this research and not sure where to go next to figure all of this out.

I misspoke when I said there were two Jacob Sheets in the 1880 North Carolina census of the right age to be the person you are looking for. There is no one of an appropriate age with that name, at least as currently indexed by Ancestry. There are people named Jacob Sheets in NC, but they seem too old or too young, although they can't be absolutely ruled out on that basis.

The other possibilities that come to mind: (1) he's there, but not indexed properly, (2) he was not enumerated in the 1880 census, (3) he's living in another state in 1880, but then you have to account for how he and Caroline Absher met, (4) he was enumerated with another first name, or (4) the informant for the name of the father of Ollie (Absher) Sheets was wrong.

As you may be aware, Ollie was enumerated in the 1900 census in Wilkes Co., NC as Olly Absher, with his mother Caroline and his grandmother. Caroline's entry states she is single and the mother of one child, one living, suggesting that if Jacob Sheets were Ollie's father they never married. Had Caroline ever been married, she should have been recorded as married, widowed, or divorced, not single.

There are two individuals in North Carolina in the 1880 census of the right age to be the Jacob Sheets you are looking for, although I haven't taken the time to consult a NC map to see which one may be the "best bet" based on geography.

Besides studying the lives of these two men thoroughly, I would suggest consulting Wilkes Co. court records (assuming they exist for the time period; they may or may not be microfilmed). There may have been a court case related to establishing who was responsible for his financial support (similar to child support cases today).

I was too excited after I read this post. Obadiah "Oscar" Sheets (born "no name" Sheetz) to Samuel & Lydia (nee Coffman) Sheetz on 7/27/1858. He married Margaret Smith 1883 in PA. He d. 4/22/1916. His son Thomas Sheets did live in Rosslyn Farms and was the County Treasurer. When he died his wife Lorna (Twichell)Sheets took over his position. My grandmother, Gertrude, was born to Oscar's daugther, Margaret in 1906 (out of wedlock) and was, therefore, named Gertrude Sheets. I believe 2 yrs later Margaret did in fact marry Bert Day and they had 2 children. Gertrude, however, got passed between relatives and ultimately went to live permanently with Tom and Lorna Sheets in Erie. I have lots more. cdingwell@msn.com

Oscar Sheets is my gggrandfather. His daughter, Margaret (Madge) was my grandmother's mother. Oscar was born in Virginia in 1858. On the birth records he was "no name" and later was named Obadiah and then it also appears as Obed. Last name was Sheetz. You will find him in the Census' under either of those names. His brother was William Sheetz. For whatever reason Oscar ended up spelling his name as Sheets. Seems like that occurred when he moved to Pennsylvania. I have a copy of his obit (PA). I will scan and email to you. It is late so tomorrow I will send you the family sheet with father and mother's name and back a few generations from there.

The Scrapbook of Avarilla Bell Hess contains the following entry: "Mr. Henry SHEETS got both legs cut off at Fayette City and died the same day, April 12, 1913".
This was my great-grandfather. I think his mom was Isabel Athey (not sure). Anyone with information on him please contact me at dblari@aol.com.
Thanks
Dave Lari
Baltimore, MD
