General John O. Shelby, aka Gen. JO

For those with a special interest in Gen. Jo Shelby, the cavalryman who fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War, I suggest (if not all ready reviewed)the well documented narrative by Shelby Foote titled THE CIVIL WAR, (paperback edition), First Vintage Books Edition, September 1986, Copyright 1963, Vol. II, pp. 776-778, 779. These pages describe the famous raid from Arkansas into Missouri and back in great detail. Some believe the results of this raid confirmed Gen. Jo as the greatest cavalryman for the Confederacy surpassing Forrest, Morgan and Quantrill. Shelby was promoted to Brigadier General as a result of this famous raid.

Hello, I am a ggrandaughter of an Emma Baham Hyde who was from Madisonville La. Her brother was Arthur Joseph Baham so maybe Ophelia was her sister-in-law. Arthur and Emma were two of about 13 children of Louis Baham and Rose Scarza. Rose died when Emma was five years old. I have info that Rose was part Choctaw and born around 1848 as a free woman of color. I don't know if these are your wife's people or not but it certainly sounds like they are the same people. Hope it helped.

Larry, I know nothing about the Shoate/Choate family histories having never encountered them and also having no kinship with respect thereto. I also am not familiar with the Shelbys in your message. With more time, I might be able to identify them. I am currently packing for an extended four month trip. I did, however, look at my treasured book by Johnnie M. Johnson titled REES AND MARY SHELBY: Ancestors & Descendants. There was one reference to a Shoat in the section concerning Thomas Shelby and Hannah, his wife. Here is the entry which may lead you to where your Shoat people were at one time, perhaps.

" 29 April, 1822, Tennessee, Maury County: Thomas Shelby of Maury County in consideration of natural love & affection I have for my sons Eli and Levi, I have given them land in this county on waters of Duck River ... NW corner of Jonathan Broom to NW corner of Thomas Shoat/Shute. Signed Thomas Shelby; Witnesses: John Priest & George Shelby (a brother); registered 17 Feb 1823, source: Maury Co. Deed Bk ki, p. 78."

Good Luck

Seeking Michael/John/Daughter Choate/Shoat b. in TN?>>1860 in Butler Co, MO>> 1870-1880 in Jackson Co, IL>> d. ?? date in ?? place.

Here’s what I know with reasonable certainty:

In the 1880 Fed Census for Degognia Twp, Jackson Co, Illinois:
SHOAT, John N W M 24 Head Married Farmer KY KY KY
“ Emily W F 21 Wife Married Housekeeper IL OH OH
“ Claud E. W M 3/12 Son At Home IL KY IL
Browfield, Ben W M 15 Ad. Son At Home IL IL IL

The wife is Emily MNU Johnston, daughter of George Washington Johnston and Rebecca Rouse (Chester, Randolph, Illinois: Choate, John L / Johnson, Emily / 11/24/1879 D /33 199 / Randolph). I have not yet researched this Ben Browfield. John allegedly d. 13Jan1893, and is buried in Buchanan Cemetery, Degognia Twp, Jackson Co, IL. I have Emily and their 6 known children in the 1900-1930 censuses. Emily allegedly d. 14Mar1939 (not sourced yet), buried Buchanan.

In the 1870 Fed Census for Degognia Twp, Jackson Co, Illinois:
Demster, Reason 63 M W Carpenter PA
“ Margaret 40 F W Keeping Home Tenn
“ Marion 10 M W MO
“ Miles? 7 M W MO
SHOAT, Mary? 13 F W MO
“ John 18 M W Laborer Tenn

I am fairly confident this is the same 1880 John Shoat/Choate, because family legend states:
"Mike Choate, the father of John Liddel Choate, came to Tennessee from Either Northern England or Ireland (date on that unknown). About 1863 or 1864 Mike Choate brought John Liddel and a daughter, whose name we don't know, to Illinois to be left with a Mr. Dempster to be cared for. There was some relation between the Dempsters and the Choates. Mike Choate paid Mr. Dempster in gold to care for the two children. He and an older son returned back to TN . . . It was said they owned a plantation there." It has been hypothesized that 1870 Margaret Demster was born Choate, or at least that the “relation” is thru the maternal side, but any relation is possible at this point.

I conclude from this that Mary Shoat, age 13, is the previously unidentified “daughter”. I have additional evidence below. Others have concluded from this 1870 census alone, because Mary age 13 is shown ABOVE John, that Mary Shoat was born Demster and is John’s WIFE in the 1870 census. I cannot come to this “wife” conclusion. I have seen too many ages out of order in too many censuses.

Now comes the really interesting part. In the 1860 Fed Census for District 1, Butler Co, MO:
Isaac Shelby 30 M W Farmer Tennessee
Margret Shelby 35 F W Housekeeper Tennessee
John SHOAT 8 M W Tennessee
Margret A SHOAT 4 F W Tennessee
William Shelby 3 M W Tennessee
Jane F Shelby 1 F W Missouri
And John Shoat is shown with an X denoting he is a different family in the same dwelling.

AND, most interesting of ALL, in the immediately prior dwelling (presumably right next door) is a Michael SHOAT in the household of a George Smizer.
Michael SHOAT 30 M W Loafer? Tennessee
Also in this same large household, are you ready??
Resen Demster 47 M W Carpenter Pennsylvania
Does this guy look familiar? I mean C’MON! Other than the ages being a little off, this is the same man from the 1870 Census.

Sooooo, I HAVE to conclude from all this that this Michael, John, and daughter (Mary or Margret) SHOAT are the three from the family legend, and are indeed the family I seek. If anyone reading this disagrees with my conclusions, PLEASE email me to present your case, at ldwernle@aol.com. Of course, the 1860 census violates the legend, at least the part about leaving TN in 1863/1864. Instead, that could be when they left MO, for IL.

As a result, my questions are numerous:

What happened to Michael Shoat? Did he indeed return to Tennessee with his older son, as the family legend says? When? Where? Or did he stay in Missouri? Or move on to Illinois? Does anyone have this Michael SHOAT before or after 1860? If so, who are his parents? Who is the legendary older son? What about possible other children? Wife? PARENTS? When did the “four” CHOATEs/SHOATs leave TN for MO?

And what about Mary(1870)/Margret A (1860)?? Is she indeed the legendary daughter? Where did she go? Did she pass away? Or get married? If married, WHERE? MO? IL? Back to TN? Does anyone have her before 1860 or after 1870? Is Mary and Margret A even the same girl?

I also have unsourced information that Michael SHOAT’s wife was one Mary SHELBY. That’s right, SHELBY. The same name the two kids were living with in 1860.

And what is John’s middle name? Does anyone have a source for N? or L? or Liddel? Does anyone have sources for his death on 13Jan1893? His grave marker is in Jackson Co, IL.

And the most important question of all. Can anyone tell me where this family came from in Tennessee? CHOATEs and SHELBYs see to be all over the durn place in TN!

Any questions/comments/corrections or help would be most welcome.

Larry Wernle
ldwernle@aol.com
Joshua Shelby and Military Service

Joshua Shelby served with Capt. David McClure in the Virginia Militia during Dunmore's War of 1774. He was
paid on the Pittsburgh Payrolls in 1775. This information was found at the Library of Virginia. Joshua did not live in Virginia; as it was, Virginia had laid claim along with Pennsylvania and Maryland, to lands in what now is western Pennsylvania where Joshua lived in Fayette County.

Joshua was a member of Captain Thomas Gaddis's Company in 1783. Capt. Gaddis's militia was from Bedford
County, Pennsylvania. In a "List of Revolutionary Soldiers of Virginia" p. 398, it was stated that Joshua Shelby
was finally paid in 1791 for services at Pittsburgh or Ft. Pitt, Pennsylvania.

Joshua Shelby was listed as an inhabitant of Post (Fort] Vincennes, in Indiana Territory on the Wabash River
frontier in 1783. [See: Charles M. Franklin (Compiler). INDIANA TERRITORIAL PIONEER RECORDS 1801-
1815. Heritage House, 1983, p. 51.] Included in the reference is a section: "A List of American Inhabitants of
Post Vincennes, 1783 (Men and Boys.]The Wabash River campaign was a part of the Gen. Clark expedition.

Joshua Shelby [1759-1830], as previousl stated, served in the Revolutionary War in the Company of Capt. Thomas Gaddis' Virginia Militia. Joshua's card number at the National Archives and Records Administration in Washington, D.C., is 37405730. No personal papers were included in Joshua's file. Neither was there any application for pension or record of any land grant.

Joshua's name appeared on a list of Officers and Privates under the Command of Capt. Thomas Gaddis at Fort Liberty commencing Sep 9th and ending 1st January 1777. The list was not dated. But, the payroll indicated that Joshua Shelby's service commenced Sep 9, 1776,and ended Nov. 8, 1776, and that Joshua served for 61 days. The source of this information was M 881 "Compiled Service Records of Soldiers Who Served in the American Army During the Revolutionary War." Roll No. 1089, National Archives and Records Administration [NARA], Washington, D.C.

Fort Liberty was in the northern neck of what is now the State of West Virginia. It was but a couple of miles from the Ohio River, a major transportation artery during this era. The blockhouse fort was near to what is now the Town of Liberty, Ohio County, West Virginia. The fort became known as Black's Cabin and served as a territorial court for a time. During my visit to this area, I was unable to find the ruins of this likely small blockhouse fort. Fort Liberty was not far from where Joshua Shelby lived during this period of time and that was near to the Monongahela River in western Fayette County, Pennsylvania, at the mouth of Brown's Run.

Descendants of Joshual Shelby can be proud of their ancestor's military service. His male descendants are eligible for membership in the society known as the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR); the female descendants of Joshua Shelby are elibible for membership in the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (NSDAR).

For those wishing to perform on site research in an effort to discover vital statistical information concerning Joshua Shelby's wife, Susanna(h), I shall list here the sites which I visited without success. I reviewed the available documents and literature at courthouses, historical and genealogical societies, and libraries. I went to Westmoreland, Fayette, and Washington Counties in Pennsylvania. I also went to Mason County, Kentucky. Finally, I traveled to Wayne and Union Counties in Indiana. My last effort was to review the names of all the neighbors of Evan Shelby, Joshua's father, at the time the family lived in the Little Cove area of Pennsylvania. The hypothesis was that perhaps a young Joshua had met his wife among those who lived nearby to his home there in Little Cove. This search also failed. I have also scanned as many resources as have been made available at Ancestry.com and
Genealogy.com as well as at Family Search, the LDS Library. Perhaps this information will assist anyone who wishes to pursue the question of Susanna(h)'s family history in the future.

Evan Andrew>Theophilus>David>Joshua. My extensive research concerning Susanna(h), wife of Joshua Shelby, had not revealed her maiden surname, place and/or date of birth and death,or burial site. She died after Sept. 30, 1830, probably in Bethlehem, Union County, Indiana, in an unmarked grave. My visits to Union County on several occasions did not produce the home site for Joshua Shelby or his grave. I have assumed that he was likely buried on his acreage in the northwest corner of Union County near to the Wayne County line. Whatever marker may have been upon his grave there, if any, has been removed by the ravages of time.

Judy Trolinger has been burdened by other matters to the detriment of her outstanding efforts and contributions to Shelby surname history for which we are all thankful.
Evan Andrew SHELBY

Evan A. SHELBY was a son of Theophilus Hall Shelby and Elizabeth Monroe. He was born in November, 1857, in Breckinridge County, Kentucky; he died before November 7, 1925, in Vermilion County, Illinois. He married Indiana Gilkison on August 25, 1878, in Parke County, Indiana. The marriage license was signed by David Strouse, County Clerk, and also by H. A. Coffman who performed the marriage ceremony. She was a daughter of John Gilkison and Sarah Stever. She was born about 1861 in Indiana; she died before 1900 in Vermillion County, Indiana.

Evan A. Shelby married a second time to Eunice Thompson on March 28, 1886, in Vermillion County, Indiana. Eunice was born in January of 1864 and died before 1900. Thompson was her maiden surname according to a death certificate for her son, Everett H. Shelby.

The children of Evan Andrew Shelby and Indiana Gilkison were: Eli Roscoe Shelby, born May 1, 1881, Vermillion County, Indiana; died March 23, 1923, Clinton, Vermillion County, Indiana. And Mary Shelby, born October 1884, Vermillion County, Indiana. Mary was likely buried in an unmarked grave in the Johnson Cemetery, Vermillion County, Indiana.

Children of Evan Andrew Shelby and Eunice Thompson were:
Joseph Shelby, born about 1886. No further information was available concerning Joseph and he likely did not survive childhood. He was buried in Johnson Cemetery, Eugene Township, Vermillion County, Indiana. Everett Heidbreder Shelby, born April 15, 1887, Portertown, Vermillion County, Indiana; died May 23, 1963, Veterans' Administration Hospital, Danville, Vermilion County, Illinois. And Paul Shelby, born April 1895, in Indiana; he died March 6, 18198 in Indiana.

In the 1880 census for Vermillion County, IN, Evan was listed as ag 19 years and born in Indiana, working as a laborer. It was noted in this census that he had a mashed leg at the age of 19 years. At that time, he lived in a rented residence. In the 1920 census, he was living with his son, Everett, in Eugene, Vermillion County, IN, and he was 66 years of age.

Evan Shelby's will, dated March 9, 1925, bequeathed his estate to his son, Everett H. Shelby. The will was probated in the Circuit Court and filed November 7, 1925, in Vermillion County, Indiana. This information suggested that his daughter, Mary, born in 1884, likely died at birth or shortly thereafter, as probably also did her mother, Indiana (Gilkison) Shelby. No record of Indiana's death has been found. Also, Evan Shelby remarried only 18 months after the birth of his daughter, Mary, suggesting that his wife, Indian, likely died during child birth.

[Source of data: Francis W.
Be assured that the Shelby/Selby conundrum has needed resolution many times in the past by other serious Shelby family historians. Tangles with this issue in my research alerted me to the possibility. My first post could have been more forthcoming with the data thereby alerting readers that the Phillip Selby in question was not Phillip
Selby of Tregaron, Cardiganshire,Wales.

Kindest regards,

Android

Hello June: I have learned from reading your posts that when during your research you find unfamiliar Shelbys, you post the information to learn about them and also to attempt to assist others. Thank you for your posts.

With respect to the Benjamin Shelby in your post to which I am responding, I searched at Ancestry.com for Martha Darby. Then,I looked at family trees. While I am not a fan of such trees unless they are fully documented, they do at times offer some insights for further research. And too, some of them are documented enough to have some credibility as was the one below.

I have learned from my years of Shelby research that there are many instances of Selbys having been reported as Shelbys. I could name some of them but wish to get on to this matter.

In this instance, there was one Public Member Tree at
Ancestry.com named Tom's Roots owned by "Tallred." It had some documentation in the form of census data. Here are some of the particulars from that tree.

Benjamin Simmons SELBY, b 21 Apr. 1809, Union, SC; d Jun 1880 Yalobusha, MS. He married Martha Darby 11 Sep 1830, Lauderdale, AL. There was a long list of SELBY issue from this marriage.

This Benjamin SELBY was a son of Phillip SELBY, 1774-1833, and Mary SIMMONS, 1774-1870.

For some corroboration, see the 1850 Federal Census for Dist. 1, Lauderdale, AL; and, the 1860 Federal Census for Oktibbeha, MS. Benjamin was clearly listed as a SELBY.

Perhaps this shall answer your initial question. I could have provided this data in my original response to your query but saw no point. I also wish to point out that a search for a Martha Darby married to a Phillip SHELBY was futile.

Keep up the good work, June.
There was more than one Phillip Selby. The one to whom I referred and who was mentioned in the trees I read married a woman named Mary Simmons. Sorry to spoil your joke. I was only trying to point out that very often there have been Selbys who were thought to have been Shelbys and this apparently was another of those instances. You can read the trees and their documentation and decide for yourself whether this Benjamin was a Selby or a Shelby.

I certainly never meant to imply in any fashion that this Benjamin was a son of Philip Selby of Wales, the patriarch of the Shelbys in the USA.

Samuel Shelby was my ggg grandfather. I recently came by a newspaper article from Mt.Croghan, Chesterfield, SC. showing that after the death of Joel Meadows his widow Livinia (Vinny) Meadows married Samuel Shelby. In 1822 they sold the land to James Fields. I know of two sons by them, Calvin Shelby and Alfred Shelby both born in Livingston, Sumter, Alabama. They later moved to Tippah County MS which was divided in 1870 and part became Benton County. I am from Alfred's side andthey continued to live in Benton County until their deaths. It goes on from there. If I can be of any help let me know.......Larry Shelby

Looking for info on John Shelby b. around 1796 in Chesterfield, SC, and Samuel Shelby b. around 1790 in SC, both entered War of 1812 in 1814 from SC, discharged in 1815 SC. John married Martha Jones in SC 1816. Samuel married Lavina Meadows. Believe John and Samuel may be brothers, as joined war on same day, served in same company, and discharged same day. Believe both show up together in Lauderdale, AL at inventory estate sales in the years 1824 – 1826, and then again in 1831. They appear to be in the Maury, TN 1830 census. Believe they may be brothers to Rees who is in Lauderdale, AL from 1818 – 1835, who is probably son of Rees Jr from Chesterfield, SC. Don’t have any documentation, but am searching. If anyone has any info on either of these three possible brothers, or info to show they belong to some others please reply.helb

For what it may be worth, most of the public family trees at Ancestry have Benjamin as a SELBY, son of a Phillip Selby. This is not my research and family trees should always be approached with suspicion. You may wish to contact the contributors to learn more about Martha Darby and Phillip Selby.

I am searching for my Shelby family connections. I have good data up to John Clinton (d: 1839, Livingston, KY) and his wife Sarah “Sally” Shelby (d: 1855, Crittenden, KY). They are buried in Crittenden, KY in Piney Fork Cemetery.

My Clinton family records have Sarah as the daughter of William Shelby and Sarah blank.

Could this be the William Shelby that is the son of Moses Shelby (B: 1728 Wales, D: 1776 Mecklenburg, NC)?

William Shelby.
B: 1760 in Clear Creek, Mecklenburg, North Carolina, USA
D: Aug 1817? in Livingston, Kentucky, USA
I cannot find a record on his death date and data found varies widely.

I was also trying to track his wife Sarah. Her family name varies widely in family trees. I started searching through William’s records and found the most likely candidate:

Sarah Sally Neel
B: 1763? in Carrabus, North Carolina, USA
D: 23 Aug 1852 in Livingston, Kentucky, USA
Birth date varies widely.

Thanks for any information you can provide.
Janet

Your message is ambiguous with respect to what "family" you seek. Is it the Shelby ancestral lineage or the Stallcup ancestral lineage or the history of the issue from the marriage of Shelby to Stallcup to the present? You should be more specific and also provide information which you already possess such as dates and places, for instance, and also to avoid duplication of effort. Then, there are likely many who will be able to assist you.

The Shelby lineage is known and Judith Trolinger can be thanked for doing the research and documenting her findings and then posting it at her website as follows: Mary Pendell Shelby was the daughter of Richard P. Shelby and his 2nd wife, Rebecca Williams Mitchell. Richard P. Shelby was the son of James Shelby who married Mary Pindell. James Shelby was a son of the famous Isaac Shelby.

I do not know about the Stallcup lineages.

Jessie Shelby was a dau. of Wm. Henry Shelby, born 11 Oct. 1864 in Hardin Co., TN., and married in 1940, Stephenville, Erath Co., TX. William lived in Arkansas and married Sarah Dowdy on 7 Apr 1878. They had five children one of which was Jessie who married a Mr. Witt. The ancestors of this William Shelby are known. This is a 7th and 8th (Jessie) generation of Shelbys in the USA.

I am not related to this lineage and know nothing about Jessie's last 20 years. The data was found in a book by the wonderful lady and outstanding Shelby family historian, Johnnie Mullinax Johnson, aka "Pea Picker."
[JMJ. REES AND MARY SHELBY: Ancestors & Descendants. Published by the author in 1994, p. 198.

Looking for information on Jessie E. Shelby Witt, esp. her last 20 years. Used to visit her often when she lived at Lake Worth. When she disappeared quite suddenly we never knew what happened to her. She was my grandmother's cousin. Minnie Mae Dawdy Evatt. She was one of my favorite people and would love to know what happened to her. We visited her mom's grave just last week and her sister, Bessie in Erath County. Any help would be appreciated. My dad is 88 years old and would love to know about "Aunt Jessie". Thanks, Brenda Evatt

Hello to all of our SHELBY researchers.

Two of our foremost SHELBY researchers since Cass Knight SHELBY himself- CKS, namely Judith Ann Trolinger- JAT and Johnnie Mulinax Johnson - JMJ, would periodically appeal to serious SHELBY devotees to stop using unsubstanciated or dis-proven data.

I've noticed that several trees on Ancestory are using Evan "the black" (Dhu) SHELBY. Type in "dhu" on SHELBY boards in Ancestry or Genforum for JAT's and MJM's comments on the fictitiousness of using this colorful but unproven name.

I'm posting this to try and get a string going on "other" SHELBY data "myths" ( WAS there a Catherine DAVIS MORGAN ?, etc)

Post you biggest SHELBY pet peeve, with as much "proof" as possible.

LET'S LIVEN UP THIS BOARD : )

Maybe the best responders would be allowed to use their three initals like our mentors CKS, JMJ, JAT.
