Hello,

I was wondering if you can check the Shellman book you mentioned for a Sarah Shellman who was born July 21, 1794 in PA according to the 1880 census. She married a Ephraim Fish Williams and died on October 21, 1881, in Waterford, Erie, PA. She and her husband lived in Chenango, NY for many years farming. They had about 13 children.

The birth information may be off since I have seen two different dates in my research. I believe her father may have been a Conrad or Henry Shelman. Both I believe were Hessian Soldiers stayed after the Rev. War.

My email address is - rcharnden@yahoo.com

In advance, thank you for your help.

Regards,
Bob Harnden

My husband's Margis folks left Lithuania in the early 1900's and settled in Chicago, Illinois. There was a brother, my husband's grandfather and 2 sisters who emigrated. My son was contacted by one other Margis whose family farmed in the northern part of Lithuania. He was in England. His mother and father died during WWII. The rest of the family was scattered. One of the daughters did marry and move to Canada but that was after the war. He was the youngest and made his way to Britain and established his family there. Another sister they rescued from the Soviet section of Berlin after the war ended. I don't have my genealogy stuff here so I will post more when I get home.
Maureen Margis

I'm so glad to have found a Margis family line in the message board. I have just noticed on the death cert of my great great grandmother, Dorothy Jeanette Flowers, that her son-in-law was "Harold Margis". I don't know, yet, which of her daugheters married Harold. Jennie died in 1934, and she and her husband, John Robert Lickers, had eight children. JR Lickers was from Six Nations Indian Reserve in Ontario, Canada. They had five daughters, and of those, I have yet to determine the relationships of 3 of them. Harold would have likely been born in the late 1800's.
Thanks,
Carrie Lester
(nee Hall, through the Lickers / Cayuga family, through my mother)

The two of these older Shelman boys both married Lucas sisters (a third Lucas sister married Pleasant Stovall, for whom my direct ancestor was named after). These Shelman boys together joined the militia early in their young lives, near Macon (not far from their father, Michael). John Minor was killed in early to mid 30s, just as he was a rising star in his military life. Robert Bostwick (bolton sic) died about 4 years later, causes unknown. The Shelman brothers and pair of Lucas sisters had produced 15 children that were still living at the time. Unfortunately, one of the sisters died not long after her husband died and the total creche of children went to the surviving Lucas sister, Caroline, who took them to Montgomery, Al. All of the children seemed to have turned their lives to good fortune. But it is disturbing for some descendants who don't know whether their father was John or Robert!! Caroline Lucas Shelman Fuller (she remarried), was not much of a record keeper, it seems. Much of the lawyer needs seemed to have been under the Lucas family care (but I had hoped that some bible of Michael Shelman and Sarah Bostwick Shelman had survived, with grandchildren included. I've searched for Michael's will, but I could not find evidence it survived, either. It seemed improbable that an uncle James Meriwether should have kept up with those nieces and nephews... but thought I'd check.

Interesting of the remainder of brothers, only uncle Thomas C Peter seemed to have shown up in my relatives' lives (Charles T and Pleasant Stovall Shelman), while they lived in Cartersville. Perhaps I should check for his bible, especially given he taught at a seminary.
Thank you for reply.
Janet

Karen,
This is such a gift! Truly. I feel much like Francis Davis Shelman Clement (Fanny) as she wrote her letter to James' son -- a sense of gratitude, and a thrill inside to just let some kinsman know that your Shelman genes survived, even if your parents or ancestors perished before you were to old to be a sentient human. She and I have a bond that I never knew of before today.
What a lovely letter.
a bit more info - this slew of letters relates to the estate of John Schellman of Frederick, Maryland, who died in 1818 and left a piece of property in Washington DC that was still in contention in 1894! Identifying and locating all parties in the estate was the purpose of the letters.

Karen

Janet, I was so pleased to find something so meaningful right at the top of the pile. I had read this letter last year when my brother sent me the package, and found her delightful thoroughness in making the connection in response to Harry Shellman's inquiry.

If you recall my original posting, I said that my maternal grandmother was married in 1901 to Harry B. Shellman, son of Harry J. Shellman of the letters. They had one son, Keith. Harry died of a fever around 1905 or 1906, and Keith died 2-1/2 years later. Her second husband was my grandfather, so I have no biological link to the Shellmans. And I have no idea how she came into possession of the letters, but I surmise it was after Harry J's death when they passed to his son.

I did not read all of the correspondence, as a lot of the letters contained repetitive information or details about matters that I have no knowledge of. But for you they would be a treasure, I'm sure. One of them relates the story of how the Shellman family crest came into being. Another is probably a copy of a letter Harry J's wife wrote to a cousin during his last illness, quite touching.

I will be happy to send you the entire archive. The paper is quite fragile so you will have to find a way to store them archivally. Or pass them on to a historical society for preservation after you make copies of them. I also have two photos of my grandmother and Harry B. that I will attach here.

You may call me at 760 721 3091 or email me directly at 24kholmgren@cox.net.
Bingo!! I am attaching a copy of a letter from Fanny Clement of Macon, GA, dated June 23, 1887, in which she explains that she is the daughter of John Minor!! She also includes a lot of info about other family members. I will continue to look over other letters to see what I can find for you. They are, as you can imagine, quite fragile at this point.
Research takes twisted turns,

I am tracing Georgian Shelmans from mid 1900s to early 1800s (I've got the 1700s covered, though as always it is nice to know more).

Most of the Shelman creche seemed to come back to Georgia from Montgomery in the mid 1850s and 1860s. The women were Rebecca, Sarah (she I know belongs to John Minor), Margaret, Francis, Eliza, a Mary L (I think). Boys were Charles, Pleasant, John Andrew, Henry B, a couple of more which I've not yet confirmed (50:50 Sex ratio, it would seem!)
I do appreciate all you have regarding Shelman literature.
I am on tribalpages.com where you can see the Shelman tree that I've gathered thus far.
Janet

Christopher - thanks for replying to my inquiry. What I am trying to do is to find a link between Andrew F. Shellman's family, I believe he is your Grandpa Joe's father, and my side of the family, John Shellman born Aug 1846, immigrated to the US in 1871 and settled in Amor, Ottertail, Minnesota which is a few miles from Fergus Falls where your side of the family resided. They might have been brothers and that I what I am trying to find out. John Shellman immigrated from Sweden, Kjellmo Parish, Osterjatland (city).

Andrew F. Shellman had 5 children that I have found.

Charles E. Shellman, born Feb. 1867 a machinest/Engineer
Elizabeth Shellman, born about 1875 - died 10 June 1953
John Ludwing (S.) Shellman, occupation Doctor, born Apr. 1877 and died Nov. 1967
Amanda B. Shellman, born Jun 1879
Joseph Frederick Shellman, occupation Dentist, born 29 June 1882, married Pearl Chappuie, children: Jane, Marian, Fred. Died 18 Jan. 1979.

Hope this helps you. I could not track back to Sweden because most of the international search is in a foreign language (Swedish).

Please let me hear from you to see if we can make a connection between the two families.

I find no Daisy Shellman in my family. You mention no dates or places other than Corning...I don't know where that is.

My earliest known Shelman is Matthew in the 1700's in NY (still trying to ascertain exactly where). His son Nicholas Shellman settled & md in Michigan as did some of his siblings.

Sorry I couldn't be of help.

Thank you for your interest.

Roma

For whatever reason, I don't believe I received notification of your query. Better late than never.

The only Sarah Shellman I have found in my family is Sarah (b in 1844 in Mich), daughter of Nicholas (b in 1813 in NY). Nicholas was the son of Mathew Shelman (b 1781 in NY) & there my line stops.

Sorry I can't be of help...am still trying to pinpoint exactly where in NY Mathew & Katherine (only given name) were settled.

Thanks for your interest.

Roma

I am in possession of a collection of letters related to the Shellman family of Frederick, Maryland, and relatives (Schley, Baer, et al) in Georgia and New York City. Most of the letters relate to an inheritance matter from the estate of Col John Shellman (1723-1816), written by various family members and attorneys to Harry J. Shellman of Brooklyn during the period of 1887 to 1894. There are profiles in these letters of Col. John Shellman, Frederick Augustus Schley, and others, as well of lists of family members. Also an account of the origin of the Shellman family crest (German) written by M. Baer, dated Sept 30, 1865.

My grandmother was married to Harry B. Shellman, son of Harry J. Shellman. They had a son, Keith, but both Harry and Keith died prior to 1910 and she remarried, so I am not a member of the Shellman family and have no contact with any of them.

Karen Holmgren
Oceanside, CA
760 721 3091

Hi,

My husband's family name is Margis. They came from the Talsis (Telschu) region of Lithuania around 1911. His name was either Martin or Anton. He had 2 sisters, Mary and Betty who lived in Chicago and Waukegan. He lived in Roseland and later Calumet Park until he left his family and moved in with his sister in Chicago. He had 6 children.

I also am in contact w an Ervin Margis whose father Walter emigrated to England after WWII. They were from Taurage (Tauragon) near Vilnius. He had an uncle who emigrated here before WWII. His father does not remember his name.

The reference to being treated like royalty in Lithuania may be because a 17th Century Count Margis led a resistance against the invading Knights of another nation. There is a Margis Mound which may commemorate him near Telschu.

Maureen Margis

My husband's family is Margis also. My nephew in searching for that name said he came upon a Count MARGIS who fought against invaders in the 17th century. There is a Margis Mound in Lithuania and a Margis lake. Where did your MARGIS relations come from in Lithuania and where did they settle in the US? The ones I am searching for came from Talsis probably Telschu and Tauragon probably Taurege near Vilnius. The names we are searching for are ANTON or MARTIN MARGIS of Talsis and any relative of Walter, Ervin or Edward MARGIS of Tauragon.

In hopes we can help one another,
Maureen Margis

My father's name was George William Shellman. He had a brother named Tom who later changed his name from Shellman to Winrod. My father's father was John. I know very little about him. He was probably from Tennessee. My father was born in Linn Creek, Mo. which was flooded by the "Lake of the Ozarks". He grew up in Lebanon. Was born in 1897, left home at an early age. He had sisters named Alma and Nellie. Not sure which, but one of them was a real sister and the other a half. John, after leaving my grandmother may have married a woman named Mamie. That's all I know.

Anna Margeretta Shellman m. James Smith (Albany N.Y)

I don't have any dates or places or know where to find them on the census.

I have a social security application for GEORGE ALEXANDER SMITH, whose parents were James Smith and Anna Margeretta Shellman.

I'm not sure about the birthdate of George Alexander Smith, but he was born in Albany, N.Y. The census shows he was born May 7, 1878, but his social security application gives the year as 1888.
