I have just started back in my search, but 10 years ago I wrote to all the Shepard's in the Danville and Milton phone book(s) and had a reply from one who said her family name had been changed. I belive her relatives were from Poland and this surname rings a bell. It will be a while before I get those papers in order, but if you are still looking I'll make a note of it. Shepherd had a sister Elizabeth and another sister Patsey, who married John Foreacres (not sure of the exact last name spelling).

Mary G. Shepherd had a sister Frances and also a sister named Patsey, who married James Boughton.

Thomas Smith Shepherd (Sheppard) and Flora M. She appears in the 1920 Census with Thomas and Flora living in Bruton, York County, Virginia and is listed as 3 years and 9 months old.

John in Florida

Hi Ollie,
We have emailed before. I spent a few hours in the Clerk's Office in Tappahannock three days ago going through records and found a little new in
formation.
It looks like Smith Young Shepherd married Mary Gilly or Gilby Sheperd(2 differnt spellings in 2 different records), daughter of Reuben and Elizabeth (Betsy) Shepherd. Yes, Shepherd married Shepherd. They had one son Charles R. born about 1838. Mary G. died about 1840 and that is how Smith Y. got the land (Reuben's land) that Smith Y.'s 5 children inherited.
Smith Y. married Frances Brizendine after Mary G. died and had 4 more children; John E, James William, Mary F. and Emily Eudora.
All 3 of Smith Y.'s sons were in the 55th during the War of Northern Aggression ;-) and their names are on the Monument in front of the Courthouse in Tappahannock. Charles R was killed at Chancellorsville, William was killed at the Battle of Mechanicsville and John E. was seriously wounded, lost a leg I think. Not a good time for this family.
I'm pretty sure Smith Y.'s parents were Ephraim Shepherd and Rebecca Selton. Not sure of Rebecca's parents other than her father was a Shelton and her mother was a Young, the daughter of Henry Young Jr. Henry Young Jr. had a brother named Smith Young. Probably where her son got his name Smith Young Shepherd.
Smith Y. Shepherd'd mother Rebecca was the granddaughter of Revolutionary War General Henry Shepherd Jr. (1743-1817)
Charles R. Shepherd and Alice Ann Boughton's son Thomas Smith Shepherd had three wives; Mary C. Cooke, Rosa F. Courtney and Flora M. Brooks.
Hope this helps a little.
BTW, my ancestors James H Shepherd and his wife Nancy Collins lived on the land Smith Y. got when his wife Mary G. (Reuben Shepherd's daughter) died. Their names are mentioned in subsequent documents and lived next door to Charles R. in the 1860 Census. If you run across James H Shepherd or Nancy Collins in your endeavors, plese let me know. I'm sure the two families are connected, but have not yet found the connection.

John O. Sheppard
feel free to email me directly: jsheppard21@comcast.net

I am the 9th great grandchild of Thankslord Perkins and Ralph Shepard. I have been reviewing your post as well as others on the ancestry of Thankslord Perkins. Are you certain that Thomas Lord and Dorothy Bird were her parents? The probated will of Dorothy Bird makes no mention of Thankslord and I have read that there is question about the Lord connection. I have read reports were the Lords were considered her parents and other reports stating that the "lord" part of her name was just part of her given name, having no connection to Thomas and Dorothy and that her actual maiden name is Perkins. Can you clarify this? Thank you for your assistance. I can be reached at: sandykohn226@gmail.com

Hutchinson and Carrie are parents of Walter J. Shepard. I have not found any more siblings for Ralph M. and Vernon Shepard but I may have found the grandparents,Richard Shepard and Mary Ann Ford. They lived in Scott, Ontario North, Canada. They were both from England before emmigrating to Canada. Confirmation of Richard Shepard and marriage of Mary Ann Ford and where they were from in England would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Looking for a Vernon Shepard who married a Viola Kidder Turner. They had at least one son, William Eugene. William Eugene would have been born abt 1922. He shows up on the 1930 census but his mother has remarried a Storer by then. I do not know if Vernon is the first name. I do not know if Shepard has only one "p" but that is how it was listed on the census. This was in Ohio around Adams county area. Thanks

The birth dates listed on censuses are not always accurate because records were not as well kept as the are now. It is possible they were born in 1826 or 1823. Would have to find actual birth or christening information to verify it.

Good Morning
I am confused about my Isaac. The 1880 census gives his age as 53. The 1870 census gives his birthyear as 1826. I have him born Aug 14, 1826. And I have listed Catherine's birthdate as 12 Oct. Do you know when they were married? It was probably in OH.
My e-mail address is TNLion@aol.com

According to the 1900 census your Isaac's date of birth is listed as Aug 1823 and his wife of 45 years Catherine is listed as Oct 1823. It also says they were married in 1855. They spelled his name as Sheppard in that census. Your best will be to try and track down their marriage certificate if you can. Unfortunately this doesn't say where they were married.

The had 8 children all born in Indiana:
1. Anna b. 1853
2. John Greeley b. 1856 d. 31 Jul 1936 Laurel, Indiana
3. Douglas Stephen b. 1859
4. Thomas M b. Enlisted in Company K, 69th Infantry Regiment Indiana. Married Nancy Ann Barnhart on 22 Aug 1852 in Fayette County, Indiana. Have their marriage license. Jonathan and Nancy had 8 children: Anna, John Greeley, Douglas Stephen, Thomas M, Elta, Marshal, Harry and William. Lived in Fayette, Union and Franklin counties of Indiana.
