Levi Sheriff - Elizabeth Wilson Marriage (Maryland) and Susan B. Sheriff (Birth/Death)

For the other part of you message regarding the wife, if you've not found this information already...

According to records from FamilySearch.org (the link to this record is included in the citation), Levi Sheriff married Elizabeth Wilson on 15 May 1810 in Prince Georges County, Maryland.

Source Citation

"Maryland, Marriages, 1666-1970," index, FamilySearch (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F4NN-N4D : accessed 23 April 2012), Levi Sheriff (1810).

* * *

One other thing that I noticed in your original message (in case you haven't already addressed the issue):

You mentioned a approx. birth year for Susan Beall Sheriff as 1770. The prevailing approx. birth year that I've found is 1820 (born Susan Beall Greenfield Young), and she died on 9 Jul 1912 at 92 years old. She was buried at Congressional Cemetery before she was moved to the Beall family cemetery.

Record, http://www.congressionalcemetery.org/sheriff-susan-b
Obituary, http://www.congressionalcemetery.org/sites/default/files/Obi...

Year Book of the American Clan Gregor Society, vol.
Re: Phillip Hill Sheriff

Thank you for your information.

Based on the research here at Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org on my maternal ancestors (mother's father), I found documentation related to the DC Emancipation and Compensation Act among other things. I was finally able to close the loop based on information from the death record of a ggg-aunt, which showed her parents' names and place of birth. The place of birth in the daughter's death record showed showed Bennings, DC for her father Wesley Jackson.

This crucial information finally closed the loop on my research on the family and provided information that I'm a descendent of slaves (Jackson) once owned by Lemuel Sheriff and Susan Beall Sheriff (1820-1912). The name Lemuel Sheriff was taken from the compensation petition of wife Susan (who identified herself as the widow of Lemuel Sheriff in her compensation petition addressed to the Circuit Court of the District of Columbia in April 1862).

Not only was Wesley Jackson (b. 1856) emancipated by the congressional action, so were his grandparents Frederick (b. 1807) and Dolly (b.1812) and their children Charlotte (Wesley's mother), Polly, William, and Frederick Jr. With this new information, I was able to trace back my mother's father's mother, who was Wesley Jackson's daughter - my great-grandmother in plain talk) side of the family back from the U.S. Census and the emancipation records to my gggg-grandparents.

I had been researching the history of that era, since there's a street also named after the Sheriff family. That's when I noticed that Sheriff Road appeared in the 1910 U.S. Census for the first time. Bennings Road (now known as Benning Road, NE in DC), on the other hand, has been around at least since the 19th Century, if not earlier. I used to go to a junior high/middle school during the 1960s with Benning Road in its address.

Phillip Hill Sheriff

Phillip Hill Sheriff(1861-1928)was born in Prince George's County, Maryland. He was the son of George Beall Sheriff (1830-1918) and Sarah Elizabeth Hill (1835-1918).George Beall Sheriff was the son of Lemuel Sheriff (1786-1843) and Susan Beall Young (1791-?) According to "Colonial Families of the United States," Lemuel Sheriff was the son of Levi Sheriff (c. 1766-1853). The Sheriff family were connected to the well known Beall family and George Beall Sheriff above was the last heir of "The Cedars" at Benning, DC (They owned Colonel Ninian Beall's old estate, "Fife Enlarged" on Benning Road, Washington, DC) I am hoping that this short genealogy will be helpful to some of you Sheriff family researchers. Would appreciate any information on Elizabeth Wilson (c.1770-?) of Prince George's Co., Maryland wife of Levi Sheriff above.
Hi Raema,

I have some distant Shirrefs/Sheriffs (many different spellings) that hail from South Shields - not my direct line - but I have trees for both (basically back to Alexander Shirrefs b.1759 (Gardener in Aberdeen) m. to Elizabeth Murray in Aberdeen in 1785. She died 1844. Their children were all baptised in Aberdeen. One child of this marriage David (b.1802 Aberdeen, died Sth Shields in 1851) married Janet Kay in Sunderland in 1837 (similar location in norht of England). Another son, Alexander (b. Aberdeen 1786) m. Harriot Jones in Southwark, London in 1816, but ended up in Tynemouth.
If any of this seems remotely like it might connect, get back to me.

cheers
Robin

Hi Sandra. Nellie's maiden name was Sheriff. I remember her telling me that she came from Newbury, Berkshire, England. I remember also that her birthday was January 1st. She was in her 80's when she passed away in 1968, so she was probably born sometime in the mid to late 1880's.

I believe she had at least one sibling - a sister named Julie or Julia. Julie's married name would have been Berry.

Thanks so much in advance for any help that you can offer.

Hello! I am one of Nellie's grandchildren. I am the son of her daughter Gladys. I believe that Nellie was born in Newbury, Berkshire, U.K. I don't know what year, but her birthday was January the 1st. She died in Newmarket, Ontario, and I believe that both her and Thomas Furman are buried in Park Lawn Cemetery in Toronto.

My mother was born in Germany under the name of Brigitte Sheriff in 1945 to Lilly Sheriff (unwed mother). As a young girl, she was taken from her family by the American troops that occupied Germany after the war and sent to Kinderheim Simon in Konigstein Ts. From there she was adopted to the US by an American couple. I know of an Aunt Edith and Uncle George that still live in Mannheim. I am looking to learn to full story of what happened to my mother and her brother Eric.

Does anyone have information on the husband __________?
SHERIFF of Sarah PLACE. He would have died prior to 1827 possibly in Exeter. They had one son Charles H. Sheriff born
July 28 1821 in Exeter.
