This is a story told to me by my Grandmother. How it works with the dates I have no idea. I heard they lived up the hill from her and when she would go outside Mrs Nestleroad would throw rocks at her. I don't have written proof, I guess I should have had her write it down. Wouldn't make any actual proof if it were though. Sorry I don't have proof positive for you only stories from my Grandmother.

Susananna Sherk married Frederick Nestlerode (Illinois database spells Nesselrode) 1855 Stephenson County, Il. The Sherks were living in Stephenson County 1850 and Susananna was 13 at that time. So How could the Nestlerode's (Dan and Margaret) be mean to Susan and throw rocks at her as she was not living in Pennsylvania? I have read they did not like Susananna and disowned Frederick. I don't see how they would even know her, as they were in Illinois. HELP

Also, cannot find the grave of George Herner, read somewhere he was buried on a small farm and then another stated he was in the cemetery where daughter Elizabeth Johnston is buried (Denison, Iowa).
Thanks.

Very happy to hear from you. I have a family tree posted at My Heritage.com. Will give you permission to view. Need your e-mail address. My great-grandmother is Sophia Sherk Weiler (sister to Sarah Sherk Herner). I have been to the cemetery in Mt. Carroll, IL and have photos of Sarah's grave along with her daugher Nancy who happens to have married Adam Wiler (son of my great-grandfather Henry Weiler. So--son married daughter of Sarah Sherk and father married sister of Sarah Sherk. Adam Wiler's mother (Sarah Biehl) died in childbirth with 2nd child. Henry remarried to Sophia Sherk. I am in Stephenson County, IL where the Andrew Sherk family and Henry Weiler family lived. Have been researching now for about 10 years. Have lots!
Yes I'am her sister . Would you know Steven and if so could you tell me anything about him I'm working on my family tree and anything i get would be kept private.I think about him often as he was close to my son's age I lost my son in 1994 in a motorcycle accident and always wondered if Steven had a great life. I wanted to take him but the CAS would not let me have him.I did talk to his adoptive parents at one time and gave them some family info. As I said I still wonder about him.You can email me if you want at the email address at the bottom

from Carol Quibell O'Brien
cobrien77@cogeco.ca

I wonder if Matilda may be her middle name? Cannot find her born Sherk or Shirk 1828 anywhere. Will try to get to Cedarville, IL as that is where Ilgens are buried.
I don't believe there is any proof of Matilda's death date or place or even that she is the mother of John C. Ilgen. Her approximate death date is based upon the proof of her marriage on 2 May 1848 to John Joseph Emmanuel Ilgen (one of her descendants tracked down the marriage certificate) and the appearance of a young child (age 1) named Johbn Ilgen in the Andrew Shirk household in 1850 and the fact that the father (John Joseph Emmanuel) is now living back his parents and without a wife in the same census.

I would say that the evidence points in her direction and to no one else at this point as the mother of John C. Ilgen.

I would love to find proof of Matilda's death and her relationship (daughter?) to Andrew Sherk.

You are correct. Susannah did NOT marry John Ilgen.

She was married 3 times... the two you mentioned) Frederick Nestlerode and Laird Howard Haines) and the 3rd to Frederick Landau - m. 18 Jun 1911 in Silver Bow, Montana. She is buried with her 3rd husband in the military cemetery in Sawtelle, California (in LA County). I have visited her grave there.

John Joseph Immanuel Ilgen died 11 Nov 1907 in Illinois. One of his descendants from his marriage to Matilda Shirk (and their son John C. Ilgen) has done a lot of work on this line and has helped provide me with records. We just have no death record for Matilda Shirk.

Sarah Shaffer Ilgen died 12 Aug 1903 in Stephenson County, Illinois.

Emma SHERK: estate heir 1912

6 Oct 1912, Jacob K. ZIMMERMAN died at The Elms Hotel in Excelsior Springs, Mo., age about 70. He died leaving neither widow nor will but an estate worth more than a million dollars. It read like a serial in the Kansas City Star as people sent their family trees in hopes of proving they were a legitimate heir. In all, there were twenty-seven heirs, one of them was my gg grandfather, John Hancock MARTIN, a tailor in Kansas City and "nephew of the half-blood" to Mr. ZIMMERMAN. On the list of nieces of the whole-blood was Emma SHERK; no address was published.

Here is my family relationship to Jacob K. ZIMMERMAN: Jacob's mother was Hannah (Clark) MARTIN (1798-1875), widow of Thomas D. MARTIN; Hannah and Thomas MARTIN had one son who lived to adulthood: William Davison MARTIN (29 Jul 1820-2 Mar 1896) father of John Hancock MARTIN. Hannah was widowed in 1823 and was remarried to John ZIMMERMAN with Jacob K. born about 1841; Jacob had three sisters whose names I do not know. The MARTIN family, and allied lines, are to be found in Dauphin, and Lebanon Counties of Pennsylvania. A newspaper article places Jacob ZIMMERMAN's burial at "his old home in Hanover, Pa." Assuming the reference is to the town rather than several small townships, this would be York County.

Hope to contact a SHERK descendant to share notes about out common ancestors and perhaps a story or two about the inheritance. I have newspaper articles and family data I'd gladly copy.

The Nestleroad Family disinherited Frederick when he married Susanna. They wanted him to marry into a better family. This left them pennyless when he died. Her brother Jacob did adopt the baby and raised him as his. Young Frederick help this against his mother all his life aand never forgave her. He last husband was a veteran and they lived in California at the time of her death. I believe his last name was Ilgen or something like that.

She had a very hard life raising her remaining children then remarried my Great Grandfather Laird Howard Haines. Another bit of interest, her sister Christian married Laird's father Henry Haines. They also had several children together. Is question as to the father of their first child.

I have been unable to contact any family of Lucille Haines Richardson. One of them wrote quite a book on Henry Haines and the Haines family.

Jack Stewart is a good person to talk too.
Hi cousin,

I think I have some info from you regarding Susan Sherk Nestleroad. there is a wolf/nestleroad marriage license posted by Shirley hopper (genology.com).

We are finding that probably Susan's brother, Jacob, adopted Susan's son Frederick Sherk Nestleroad born 11 Sept 1863. Jacob was a bachelor and I guess had money. Susan was forced to adopt out her son as her husband died and left her peniless with small children.

For some reason I am finding that Susan died in some vetern's home in California? not for sure on this.

Yes, I have the lineage on the sherks. My great-grandmother, Sophia Sherk Weiler is buried in Dakota Cemetery in Stephenson Co. Illinois. I have seen the tombstone and will be photographing when weather permits.

Would love to exchange more info. I am searching so hard for my great-grandparent's family. Weiler changed to Wiler by my grandfather Charles. We are all here in Stephenson, Carroll, Winnebago, and JoDaviess counties in northern Illinois (west of Rockford).

I have info on Susan's sister, Sarah Sherk Herner. I think my great-grandfather had a first wife (Sarah Biehl) and they had a son, Adam. Adam married Sarah Herner's daughter, Nancy. My great-grandfather, Henry, married Susan's sister, Sophia as his second wife. My grandfather, Charles Wiler is one of their sons.

Enough for now. Let's talk again soon!

Pam Wiler
Box 112
Pecatonica, Illinois 61063

pamelakwiler@msn.com
