By all means, restate that one should be careful with anyone linking up with nobility, royalty, etc. Ask someone who should have known better and just finished deleting about 2000 names from her family tree program. Some may go back in there but many will not. Many of the nobility and of course, royals are in wikipedia--along with their descendants.
However, I need some clarification. I have a Samson Sherman as s/o Philip Sherman and Sarah Odding. I have also seen this Philip and Sarah with only one child. Does anyone have any information on this family that they could share?? judi

I don't currently have an active membership to Ancestry but I do see that you have Ezra Arkland as the child of Henry D. and Louisa Sherman Arkland. I am interested in where exactly you got your information, because it's wrong. Henry Arkland was married to Louisa Keeler, daughter of Hiram and Mary Keeler of Ogden, NY. Please contact me with your information. I will provide the sources for my information if you will provide the sources for yours. Thanks. Henry is my 3rd great grandfather.

Edward (or Edwin) Sherman, Rockland, ME (St. John, N.B.) (1886)

I have no connection to this family, but found this while doing other research. This appeared in the Mar. 2, 1886 issue of the Rockland (Maine) Courier Gazette in the Folks and Things column:

“One week ago Saturday Edward R. Sherman, who formerly lived at the head at the Head-of-the-Bay (sic) was killed by falling from the deck of a vessel, in which he was employed. The accident occurred at St. John, N.B., where the vessel lay. Mr. Sherman was scuffling with one of the crew, and both fell over the vessel’s side to the flats beneath, a distance of twenty feet, the former striking on a post, fracturing his skull and inflicting other injuries from the effects of which he died Wednesday.. The body was brought here for interment, Mrs. Sherman and two children, and J.W. Verrill of Auburn, brother-in-law of the deceased, accompanying the remains here. The body and its sad attendants were detained during the snow blockade at Cumberland Junction. Kind ladies on the train, foremost among whom were our Rockland ladies and Mrs. Edw. Mallett of Freeport learned the widow’s sad story, and with a woman’s instinct soon discovered that she was but poorly prepared for so unexpected a delay. A purse was quietly made up, Gen. James A. Hall of Damariscotta, who was one of the detained, acting as spokesman. Edw. Mallett of Freeport, started the ball with $10, and when Mrs. Mortland of this city took the money to the mourning lady, the $10 had grown to $48. Such acts as these are oasis in the desert of human selfishness.

(Note: I found a bit more info. in some other records - in another record he is referred to as Edwin, while in the paper it was Edward. Also "Alfred" Sherman is listed as ordering the funeral services so I suspect he is either a brother or his father. Edward/Edwin is listed as being 37 years old and is buried in the Achorn Cemetery, Rockland)

My mother's brother died in Florida in 1974, in a tragic situation. He and his wife, Marie Sorenson divorced , likely about 1968. All I know is she was named Elizabeth. It would be nice to connect with a cousin I never met and share some family information on her father, as I knew about her, but no one in my family that I am aware of knew where she was. Our family is scattered all over the country, so it would be nice to find Elizabeth asn she and I are about the same age. Kathey

Anson Sherman was my great grandfather and Ella was, of course, my great grandmother. My maternal grandmother was Marjorie Ella Sherman. I have loads of family info, but it is a bit scattered about at the moment. I lived in Minnesota for 26 yrs. and visited Clitheral and the Clitheral Cemetary many times while living there. Many of our family are buried in the cemetary.

Jeremiah Sherman - Penfield NY to Crawford Co., Michigan

Looking for parentage of Jeremiah Sherman, b. 1825 or so, raise by Polly Sherman Woodbeck and her husband Jacob in Penfield. Was Polly (probably Mary) a sister, aunt, or other relative? Parents supposedly died young. (Accuracy of parentage listed in public family tree on ancestry of Wealthy Gates and Benson Sherman is doubtful.)Jeremiah's first son named Wiliam, so father could also be William. Some evidence birth may have been in Duchess County, but this has not checked out. I have Jeremiah's family bible and will exchange information if requested.

Normally I would just post that you'd have better luck if you included dates, but Brelsford is unusual enough that I searched. I found a death record (and veterans burial record) for Eva Brelsford: b. 28 May 1923 d. 28 Jan 2002.

Unfortunately, there are several Eva Shermans in the census records born in/near 1923. Do you know where she was born?

This is what I have on Charles Lester Sherman. Please let me know what you have. I am researching his family.

Rev. Greg Dawson
revgregdawson@hotmail.com

Charles Lester Sherman, born Dec. 7, 1847 in Providence RI. On Nov. 20, 1863, he enlisted in the Civil War at the age of 16, serving in Company B of the 1st Connecticut Regiment of Cavalry. He was promoted to Full Corporal on May 1, 1865. He served with his regiment until the end of the war, participating in many battles and skirmishes in Virginia, notably in the Shenandoah Valley. Charles personally observed the ride of “Phil” Sheridan which has been immortalized in poem by T. Buchanan Reed. Near the close of the war Charles served under General George A. Custer, who commanded the 3rd Division of Sheridan’s cavalry corps. Charles’s regiment was attached to the 1st brigade of Custer’s command. His regiment remained attachment until Lee surrendered at Appomattox. In connection with the surrender at Appomattox on the 9th of April, 1865, the Union cavalry under Sheridan and Custer rendered effective service in harassing the army of Lee. In one of the numerous engagements Charles personally captured a Confederate captain and received from him his sword. Charles also captured a confederate flag.

After the war, Charles returned home and in 1868 he joined Seymour Congregational Church in Seymour CT. He moved to NY. On Oct. 8, 1873, in Brooklyn, NY, he married Alice Hurd Gilbert. His mother Lydia lived with them until Charles moved out West. Alice died on Jan. 26, 1896 in Philadelphia, PA. On Nov. 21, 1900, he married 2nd, Marion Alice Cross. Charles died July 17, 1939 in Philadelphia, PA.
Robert B. Sherman ,86. LONDON," prolific, award-winning ,instantly memorable songs
2012
Robert B. Sherman.
LONDON (AP) -
Robert B. Sherman, one half of the prolific, award-winning pair of brothers who penned instantly memorable songs for "Mary Poppins," ''The Jungle Book" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" - as well as the most-played tune on Earth, "It's a Small World (After All)" -
has died. He was 86.
Sherman's agent, Stella Richards, said Tuesday that Sherman died peacefully in London on Monday.
Sherman, together with his brother Richard, won two Academy Awards for Walt Disney's 1964 smash "Mary Poppins" - best score and best song, "Chim Chim Cher-ee." They also picked up a Grammy for best movie or TV score.
Their hundreds of credits as joint lyricist and composer also include the films "Winnie the Pooh," ''The Slipper and the Rose," ''Snoopy Come Home," ''Charlotte's Web" and "The Magic of Lassie." Their Broadway musicals included 1974's "Over Here!" and stagings of "Mary Poppins" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" in the mid-2000s.
The brothers' awards include 23 gold and platinum albums and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They became the only Americans ever to win First Prize at the Moscow Film Festival for "Tom Sawyer" in 1973 and were inducted into the Songwriters' Hall of Fame in 2005.

President George W. Bush awarded them the National Medal of Arts in 2008, commended for music that "has helped bring joy to millions."

"Something good happens when we sit down together and work," Richard Sherman told The Associated Press in a 2005 joint interview. "We've been doing it all our lives. Practically since college we've been working together."
Their awards include 23 gold and platinum albums and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Alan Menken, composer of scores for Disney films including "The Little Mermaid," ''Beauty and the Beast" and "Aladdin," said the Sherman brothers' legacy "goes far beyond the craft of songwriting."
"There is a magic in their songs and in the films and musicals they breathed life into," he said.
Most of the songs the Shermans wrote - in addition to being catchy and playful - work on multiple levels for different ages, something they learned from Disney.
The Shermans began a decade-long partnership with Disney during the 1960s after having written hit pop songs like "Tall Paul" for ex-Mouseketeer Annette Funicello and "You're Sixteen," later recorded by Ringo Starr.

They wrote over 150 songs at Disney, including the soundtracks for such films as "The Sword and the Stone," ''The Parent Trap," ''Bedknobs and Broomsticks," ''The Jungle Book," ''The Aristocrats" and "The Tigger Movie."
The two credited their father, composer Al Sherman, with challenging them to write songs and for their love of wordsmithing. His legacy of songs includes "You Gotta Be a Football Hero," ''(What Do We Do On a) Dew-Dew-Dewy Day" and "On the Beach at Bali-Bali." His sons went on to popularize the terms "fantasmagorical" and "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious."
The Shermans teased songs out of each othe r, brainstorming titles and then trying to top each other with improvements. "Being brothers, we sort of short-cut each other," Richard Sherman said. "We can almost look at each other and know, 'Hey, you're onto something, kiddo.'"
Most of their songs were written quickly, but others took longer. The pair spent two weeks trying to nail down a snappy title for a song sung by the nanny in "Mary Poppins." They considered, and then nixed, "An Apple a Day" and "A Stitch in Time."
Sherman was based for the last decade of his life in London, where he wrote new songs for stage revivals of "Mary Poppins" and "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang."
2012 .

Thanks for responding. She was born in 1856 in either Vermont or Ontario Canada to John Cunningham and eudocia Fisk Cunningham.

It appears that she lived much of her life in Graiot county Michigan.

Family lore has it that she "had several families" and that she left each one --> records show numerous marriages (former spouses remarried so they apparently were not deceased) . Also gave birth to many children.
Spouses include:
Charles e. Sherman,
Peter h sweet,
Albert h smith,
Issac c sweet,
Noble Henry Sherman .

Family stories say we were related to gen Sherman, but I don't see it.
Both Sherman and sweet appear to be sibs.

Curious behavior -Especially for the times and in what seems like a smallish community
Any info would be interesting to me

Jwallace

Hi Jack - I am the primary caregiver for my mom who is 87. She is not well so all of my energy is focused in that direction right now as I'm sure you can imagine. If you don't hear back from me, in a month or two please e-mail me directly at megsateennow@aol.com and remind me. Take care, Cindy

Carol, you make my day!

This Orra was I think my great great grandfather. I'm interested to know if there are other Sherman relatives in the lot, even if they are not marked. We have some photos we could compare against and maybe identify a number of them. Would that be possible? Email me at ken.sherman@qconline.com please and I'll furnish you my mailing address. Ken

Hi Ken,

I got the photo along with so many others
from a family member, sadly many of them
had no names on the back. I would love to
send this to you, all I need is an address
and name and it's on its way to you!

Carol
CA

Mary Launce m. John Sherman

Anyone know the real lineage of Mary Launce who married Rev. John Sherman? I have found 3 separate different lines that lead her back into the royal family, all different. One leads her to Edward I, one to Edward III by a different path, one leads her to Alfred the Great. It seems like everyone was trying to fit her into the royal family and no one quite knew how.
