Couple questions for you. Was your Thomas born with the surname Sherratt? Do you hav his birth certificate?Which should have his parents names. Or, was he given his mother's surname, if you know?
Or the name of the orphanage?Manchester Childrens Home?
Adoption records? You can apply for records as well I think
Here are some websites in the uk
www.norcap.org.uk
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,253490.0.html

The FreeBMD has his birth surname as Sherratt and his mother's surname as Sherratt -- the best thing to do would be to purchase the birth certificate to see if there is any mention of a father. If you haven't ordered one before - I can explain the easiest way to do so :)

Ordering a UK BMD certificate online: First you will need: Registration Year:
Quarter:District Name:Volume Number: Page Number:
This information can be found my searching the FreeBMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk
or another BMD site like StaffordshireBMD http://www.staffordshirebmd.org.uk/
or UKBMD
http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/
If you have this information they will not need to do a search.
Once you have found this information visit:
GRO (General Register Office) online: http://www.gro.gov.uk
Click on order certificate online. You must register to order online. After registered follow the link to order certificate now. Choose the type of certificate. If you know the GRO Index Reference Number tick the circle and complete the form on next page. Fee: £ 9.25 standard or £23.40 Priority I have ordered many, many certificates this way. Delivery to Canada from the UK is usually about 10-14 days for standard service but may vary.

We have no record of mothers name as no one in the family knew he was adopted. Birth date is 7 Dec 1927, immigrated to Australia in 1955 from England, Manchester Lancashire. As far as i know there is no known sibblings. He left the Army and married Valerie Patricia Ockenden and moved to Australia none of his children or his wife knew of his adoption till he got sick. He passed from cancer in 2001.

I have this all sorted now and yes Eliza IS the Neice of the Skellern's.Eliza Skellern(nee Mellor) is sister of Eliza Shufflebottom's mother Jane Mellor...who died at about the same time Eliza was born.Waiting for Janes DC at present to confirm. Her Father was John Shufflebottom, but not sure which one yet.Out of the 5 of her children's BC's I have, she has used Skellern as her name on 3 of them and the other 2 Shufflebottom. It will be interesting to see what the other 3 say when I get around to ordering them.On James Walter's it is Skellern which you probably already know.
Would be interested in any info you have on James Walter, being my Grandfather's brother,my Grand Uncle.I have him married to Audrey Jones,is that right? If you send me a message through my tree I will give you access so you can view.

Hi

Enoch and Eliza are also my GGParents, my Grandfather being James Walter Sherratt.
I got stuck researching Eliza some time ago and just found your message having decided it was time to have another go.

Regarding the link between Shufflebottom and Skellern I have found Eliza Shufflebottom on the 1871 and 1881 censuses, age 3 and 14 respectively, where she appears with Charles and Eliza Skellern. Her relationship to them is given as niece. Not sure if you had that info.

Despite looking at the Skellern siblings I'm still having no luck tracking down her actual parents.
Yes yes yes..I finally have a link to the McDonald's...sooo pleased.Your Great Grandmother Annie Elizabeth Sherratt-Machin-McDonald was my Grandfather, Robert Henry Sherratt's oldest sister. She was the reason my Grandparents came to Aust.Annie came to Aust the year after the death of her first husband Jesse Machin,21 Nov 1913.I had a devil of a time trying to figure out why she was listed as a Machin in England when I knew that she married a McDonald in Aust. She had 2 daughter's to Jesse,Doris and Bessie.I have been trying to locate them but didn't think of them using the McDonald name.
No Enoch didn't come to Aust,he is buried in Leek Cemetery,Staffordshire along with his wife and some of their children and also his Mother & siblings.I am yet to locate his Father.
I am presently waiting for some certs to verify other info.
Would appreciate it if you could contact me...we ARE distant relatives....amazing.cheers Brenda
This article appeared in the Aug. 4, 1916 issue of the Lafayette, Colorado newspaper:

"Sherratt-Van Denberg

Miss Kate Sherratt and Mr. Martin Van Denberg were married at the home of the brides parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Sherratt last Thursday evening. They were the recipients of a number of presents. The Rev. Crane performed the ceremony after which the young couple left for Colorado Springs where they spent the remainder of the week sightseeing, returning home Sunday evening. They will make Lafayette their home."

I am not related to this family, but I do live in the area and have walked the Lafayette cemetery. You can find the grave markers for several Sherratt family members at coloradogravestones.org

I seem to belong to a lonely branch of the Sherratt family, there are other groups but my group seems to be coal miners from the Ford Green area of Norton-le-moors. As far as I can see there were very few male descendents and this branch of the family is now extinct. The last male, William Sherratt, purchased Ford Green Hall in the 1930's and this is now a museum. William fathered 5 girls, but I believe his half brother John (Jack) Sherratt (Scarlett) had a son called Joseph who died in about 1970.

I was at school with a Roger Sherrott and his brother Beverley in Ealing in Ealing until 1958. They were living in a motherless childrens home with several other freinds Geoffrey,Peter and Terry Dennison, Ronnie Hine,David Ingham,Alan Gomm etc and I have often wondered how they got on with their lives.
Well, I was finally able to find the correct Edward Mitchel I believe. He was born on September 30, 1887 in New York City and died in November 1970 in Flushing. It would have made him 29 years old in 1916 which matches Marguerite's birth certificate. He worked with the New York Stock Exchange for awhile. His name has also been spelled with the common spelling of Mitchell. I guess it could go either way. Hopefully, I can get beyond these two and go further back in the ancestry. Thanks.

Alta Sherrott (Mitchel)

I am trying to find out the parents of Alta Sherrott, who was born on April 28, 1889 in the United States. She had a daughter born on October 28, 1916 (died April 16, 1984) named Marguerite Alta Mitchel (last name spelled that way on the birth certificate), the father being Edward Mitchel of New York State...possibly from Manhattan where Marguerite was born. Edward Mitchel was born in either 1886 or 1887, as he was 29 years old when Marguerite was born. Alta died on December 4, 1978 in Lake Worth, Florida. She was schizophrenic and gave up her daughter for adoption, eventually taken in by Frances Wright (1896-1984). Marguerite (my grandmother) and her mother never got along, so she didn't talk much about her. She did mention that her family came over from Wales. I'm not sure if Alta is her first or middle name, but I am assuming it's her first name. Anyways, I was hoping that someone could help me out. Thanks :0)

Her second husband Neil Shirley is my Great Grandfather.
I have not managed to progress this line, but I have her marriage certificate which lists her parents. The 1881 & 1891 census (Anderston, Glasgow) gives her birthplace as being Spain. From her age on the marriage certificate (aged 22 in 1867) that would be about 1845.

Ant information on the Sherrat line, or her siblings would be most welcome.

Tom McEwan
