Hi Robert

my line is from Thomas and Rachel, there son Thomas who married Abigail, there son Cook who married Alice, to my nan Gertrude shield who married George lee.

I've only been researching for a few years, my nan always said they came from Ireland but I'm still yet to find any link to there other than a surname back in the 1600.

Regards
Sarah

Hi Tony

Thanks for your latest message. Yes, I'm sure the Shield family you mention are all mine. Florence Margaret and John Frederick were 2 of the children of George Leonard Shield and Florence Elizabeth. I've now discovered that in 1930 Alice Elizabeth Shield was the wife of John Frederick.

I'm not sure, though, that they were actually living under the same roof as your Pippett family? It looks more to me from the house numbers as if they were living just along the road from them. So they would certainly have known them for quite a while.

I have found the Shield family in one or two later electoral registers, but only up to 1936, when they seem to be living at 6 Woodford Place, Wembley. Perhaps the Pippett family also moved house during this time?

I have quite a lot of work still to do on this branch of the family, as I had not previously realised that John Frederick had married, so thank you for pointing me in the right direction!

Have you any new information on your family?

With best wishes

Patricia

Hi Patricia
I have recently found some more compelling evidence of a possible connection between your George L & Florence SHIELD(S) and my CAMERON & PIPPETT families in Willesden.

I think you will agree that it is the same George L & Florence Shield(s) found in the 1891 census, living with James & Jane Cameron at 77 and 78 Villiers Road, Willesden and in the 1901 census where George L. Shields is living at 379 Chapter Rd a few doors up from my PIPPETT family (Pippett married CAMERON)

Now I have found them ALL, living under the one roof at 371A Chapter Road, Willesden.
In the 1925 Elec Reg - William Charles Pippett and Mary Ann Pippett also George Leonard Shield and Florence Elizabeth Shield.
The same entry goes for 1929 but there is also a John Frederick SHIELD.
__

371A Chapter Road Willesden.
1929 Elec Reg: Alice Emily Pippett, Amy May Pippett, Leonard Walter Pippett, Mary Ann Pippett & William Charles Pippett
ALSO living here are George Leonard Shield and John Frederick Shield.
Then a year later in the 1930 Electoral register there is George Leonard Shield and Florence Elizabeth Shield plus John Frederick Shield & Alice Elizabeth Shield and Florence Margaret Shield living under one roof with the Pippett family.

So if you could have a look at JOHN FREDERICK SHIELD & Alice
does he appear in your family records?

I'm trying to find later electoral registers on Ancestry.com for the mid and late 1930's and onwards but they appear rarer for Willesden in these times.

Anyway, sorry for a rather long message just to inform you about JOHN FREDERICK SHIELD and his family but all these
snippets in the long run may add up to something bigger and better!

With kind regards

Tony
Dear Tony,

Don't worry about rambling - family history is complicated, and it always pays to avoid jumping to conclusions.

My Shiel or Shield family came to London in 1837 from Berwick upon Tweed, where they had certainly been for 2 generations at least. I do have a Jane Shield born in Wooler, Northumberland, in 1842, where she married and remained for the rest of her life. I also have a Jane Thompson Shiel, born in Soho in 1850. I'm not entirely sure what happened to her - like you, I have one or two possible marriages for her, and I think I shall have to bite the bullet and get a certificate. Her mother's father (a Robert Malone) came from Ireland originally, but that is the only Irish connection I know of.

I'm afraid I've never been able to discover where the Wilson Cameron names came from in GWC Shield's name. He was born in Berwick in 1829.

It's interesting, anyway, that way back your family must have known my family - it all helps to flesh these people out a bit.

Best wishes,

Patricia

Hello Patricia.
Thank you for your reply to my posting.
Everything has been a bit of a long shot during many years of research but I'm sure I'm onto the last pieces of the puzzle.

My Great grandmother is WILHELMINA CAMERON (often known as Williamina, Minnie or Mina) who married John Edward Brown in 1878 in Camberwell, Surrey.

In 1871 census - with her parents James & Jane Cameron who, along with Williamina were stated as all being born in Ireland.
In 1881 census it states "born in Scotland"
In 1891 census states "born in Willesden".
However I'm convinced she was born in Co Antrim, Ireland
in or around 1860.

Her parents were James CAMERON and Jane or Mary Jane.
Her surname not immediately known but I sifted it down to 2 possibilities. One I have now been able to "put to bed" as being wrong (that was Mary Jane CHARTERS).

There is a marriage of James Cameron to Jane SHIELDS 6th August 1854 Belfast, Antrim. His father Alexander Cameron; her father David SHIELDS. However there is another marriage in Belfast between James Cameron and Jane Shields in 1855 !!
So I will have to plump to buy one of the certificates very soon.

Recently I viewed a tree by Joseph Jackson who has uploaded a small tree to ancestry which includes James Cameron and Jane Shields - also with all the Cameron children listed the same as I had found them.

I found in the 1891 census, James & Jane Cameron living at 77 Villiers Road, Willesden and immediately below them, next door to them at No 78 are George L & Florence SHIELDS, although the enumerator did not link them as they were in seperate properties.

I then found,in the 1901 census George L. Shields living at 379 Chapter Rd, Willesden and the PIPPETT family (of whom the wife, Mary Ann, was daughter of James Cameron) living at 371a Chapter Rd.

Although still possibly coincidentally, I feel I'm getting closer.

Now you message comes explaining about George Leonard Shield, brother of your great-grandmother Margaret Isabella Shield. Also you mention an uncle, George Wilson Cameron Shield. He could hold a key so shall search for him this ewvening.

NOTE: James and Jane CAMERON's family are as follows:- Williamina b1860 Antrim,
John Alexander Cameron born c1865 St Geo in East,
Mary Ann Cameron born 1866 St Geo in East, who married William Charles Pippett (aforementioned),
Annie Cameron b 1868 Maidstone,
James Robert Cameron b 1871 Kilburn
Alice Emily Gardener Carstairs Cameron born 1872, Willesden who married Arthur WIGMORE,
James Edward Cameron b c1876 married Annie Burrows, Henrietta Cameron born c1878

So to round it off, Jane Shields would have been born c1833 and married James Cameron in Belfast, Antrim in 1854 or 1855.

If this is true or not leads me to more research, and obviously if there is anything here that "ties in" somewhere with your research I would be very pleased to hear from you.

Sorry it's been a rather long ramble - but so has the research been!!

Kind regards

Tony

Dear Tony,

This was George Leonard Shield, brother of my great-grandmother Margaret Isabella Shield. You can find them in Chelsea in the 1881 census, though their parents were away in Margate on census night.

They had an uncle called George Wilson Cameron Shield, but I've never come across a Wilhelmina Cameron. What sort of date would this be? There's more than one Jane Shield in this Shield family, but I don't think they'd be likely candidates for Wilhelmina's mother, and I don't know of any Belfast connection.

Hope this helps,

Patricia Wightman

Thanks Sandy, I didn't have Mary, Margaret or Leonard in my tree. But I do have a James born 20 Jul 1789 who is my husband's 3rd Great Grandfather. You didn't mention him in your post. I have a photo of him actually as well as one of his son James and then his son James, our 2nd and Great Grandfathers. I was able to get the two latter from the Queensland State Library site.

Once again thank you for the new info. Much appreciated

Jenny

Hi Jenny,

I had tracked down James Shield's (1789) parents a while ago to be Leonard Shield & Catherine Walton but I have a different approx birthdate for Leonard. There were 2 Leonard's christened in Cumberland - Alston 17/11/1738 & Garrigill 4/2/1751 and I think the 1751 one is more likely and it seems to be the one favoured by descendants of the other siblings.
Given that the father's name for both christenings was William, maybe it was the same family and the 1738 Leonard died early and the name was used again when the 1751 Leonard was born.

So the info I have is:
Leonard c. 4/2/1751 Garrigill d.24/2/1801
Catherine c. 4/6/1758 Garrigill d.Abt 1798
Other Children:
Margaret 1776, Thomas Walton 1779, William 1782,
Leonard 1785, Mary 1793, Catherine 1798.

Regards Sandy
Hi, I saw your message from Mar 27. Thomas Walter Shield b. 25 Nov 1885 at Toowong. Ellen Alice Warwick b. 5 Dec 1887 at Taringa, Brisbane, Qld. they had 3 children. Jean Alice b. 20 Oct 1913 and d. 9 Jul 1964, Colin Albert b. 29 Jan 1925, Warwick Thomas b. 18 May 1919 and d. 9 May 1960 and possibly another child named Edna Hazel but I'm not sure about her. I picked up her name in the electoral roll so she could possibly be the wife of Colin. Jean Alice married a Thomas Gregory Buckle aft 1934. Warwick married Sybil Elsie Payne sometime after 1943. Our marriage records only go up to 1934 unfortunately. Whether any of them had children I know not. Hope this helps.

Jenny

Glad to have been of help. If you are looking for photos of James and Isabella or their son James you can go to the Qld State Library site http://www.pictureaustralia.org/ There are photos of both as well as their homes at Moggill and Brookfield in Brisbane. Good luck.

Jenny

The timing is terrific- I have done little research in recent months and at that not on Shield, but am just getting back to it.

I have to get my head back around the Shield ancestors- cannot recall whether what I had asked was a long shot or had good provenance. Thankyou either way!

David Campbell-Williams

James Shield who married Ann Kirk was born to Leonard Shield and Catherine Walton on 20 Jul 1789 in Alston, Cumbia. His Grandparents were William Shield and Margaret Wilson. No dates for them sorry. But his James' father Leonard was born 17 Nov 1738 in Alston and Catherine 16 Apr 1758 where I don't know. My husband is a direct descendant from William and Margaret (5th Great Grandparents) right down to James and Annie (Great Grandparents) who was a son of James and Isabella Fryar. I realise it has been some time since you posted your request but I hope this has been of help.

Cheers Jenny

I recently visited and took photos of the uniting Church, Brookfield, Brisbane, of which James Shield of Durham was one of the original founders in 1869 and also obtained a copy of an 1886 Queensland land titles map with the properties of James, two of his sons, James Junior and Thomas (my ancestor) Shield on it, courtesy of the Brookfield History group. I also visited nearby "Rafting Ground Reserve" on Moggill Creek where James, his family and many of their neighbours assembled logs into rafts to float them down the Brisbane River to sawmills in Brisbane. I trust this information is of interest to others who appear to be on the same "search". I am very keen, however, to find definite information about the ancestry of James Shield of Durham further back than just a couple of generations.
I am in Australia and my paternal grandmother was a Shield; the family came here from the UK in several groups between 1906 and 1910. Leonard (and James and Joseph) is a strongly recurrent name in my line too, and although the family spent from the 1840's in Liverpool Lancs. according to the various census records and migrated from there, there is no doubt they came from Durham originally. I have a marriage cert for James Shield b abt 1819 to Alice Sutherberry b abt 1825 married in Walton, West Derby Lancs. 2 June 1845. Importantly James was born in Durham, and his father (my 3rd great grandfather) was also a James, according to the marriage certificate. This older James would (by inference based on the age of the younger James)have been born by no later than 1800.
I would be very interested to see if there is a link with your James and Leonards

Ok this is only supposition - nothing is proved in any way!!!!
I read somewhere on the net that the difference for the marriage dates for James & Anne was that the bride & groom were from 2 different parishes and the marriage was entered into both registers. (It may have been Tony the starter of this thread)
I have Anne being born in Stanhope Durham which means that James was probably living in Alston Cumberland.
I have found a James Shield born Alston Cumberland 24/7/1789 baptised 6/3/1791 (LDS website) parents Leonard & Catherine Shield.
It was the name Leonard that caught my eye as it appears that the name has been handed down thru a few generations - James Shield & Anne Kirk's first son was Leonard and second son Joseph (Anne's father's name) so it is entirely possible that the firstborn son was named for James' father.

James Shield & Isabella Fryar have 2 sons with Leonard in their names (along with a number in the next generation too).
Leonard & Catherine Shield died abt 1801 & 1798 respectively, so wouldn't have been around when James married in 1812 (if I have the right people)
Repeat - this is only assumptions.
I'd love to hear from anyone regarding any of the above.

James and Isabella (nee Fryar) Shield lived in Gosforth , Northumberland, where James worked in a local colliery and suffered bad burns from "fire damp" prior to emigrating to Australia (via Liverpool 28 July 1854) on the "Stamboul" arriving in Sydney on 31 October 1854. The family moved to Newcastle where they lived for a few years prior to moving to "Moggill" (now part of Brisbane) Queensland which was then part of the colony of New South Wales.

James became the first storekeeper and postmaster in Moggill. He died, aged 80, 19 January 1901 and Isabella died, aged 86, 8 July 1906. James does not appear to have ever worked in mines after arriving in Australia. There is a memorial to them in the Pioneer Park/Cemetery in the Brisbane suburb of Bellbowrie (once part of Moggill). Many of their descendants still live in the brisbane area.

I am a direct descendent through their son Thomas and would like to find out more about James and Ann (nee Kirk) Shield and their antecedents.

Des Shield

Hello, there is a simple and inexpensive DNA test that can verify or disprove the claim.

However, you need to locate known male descendants of the two males in question, or even going back and finding known male cousins of the same name (Shields). I would start with a few sucesses: contact your uncles, or their sons, and test them to see if each line is related, and establish a baseline.

Then, try and locate some known male cousins of the 1st and 2nd Marriages (the dispute men) and see if they will participate- there you will have your match. Personally I find it hard to stomach that 10 years, 9 children would not be an easy thing to get away with, I like the explanation - who knows what I would say on my deathbed...?

Re: Descendants of Thomas SHIEL/DS of Scotland

I am descended from Thomas Shield, born c.1831 in Scotland. Thomas had a sister Isabella (1833) and a brother - Robert (1834) who were born in Cramond, Midlothian, but I have found no evidence to suggest where Thomas was born. His parents were Thomas Shield and Isabella Adamson and they had moved to Scotland from Co. Durham, England. They returned to Co. Durham before the birth of their next child Jane in 1839.

My Thomas lived the rest of his life in Swalwell/Whickham, Co. Durham and died in 1862.

I hope this enables you to eliminate a Thomas Shield, and if possible give some clue as to where my ancestor was born.

Thanks and good luck in your search.
Catherine

Re: Shield family

Hi. I have been looking for my grandmas family "Shield" coming from South Shields or thereabouts. My grandma was Dorothy Shield and her sister was called Ellen. Their dad was a John Shield and his dad called Peter. I am really stuck!! You say that "Shield" without the final "s" is not very common - don't suppose you know of any of the above?
Am I a Shield?

My grandmother married a widower in 1902, who had had no children during the 7 years of his previous marriage. A further 8 years went by without any children - then she had 9 children over the next 10 years! Her husband died in 1940 and she then married a long time friend of her husband. In 1959, on her deathbed, she caused absolute consternation in the family by announcing that all her children had been fathered by this man! As far as I know I was the only person of my generation to be told of this. Within a couple of days it was concluded that it was not true - that she'd said it because she feared the family wouldn't look after him (they didn't much like him). I was told never to talk about it.

Quite a story, eh?

My question is - are there DNA tests that can establish whether I have Shield genes?

Descendants of Thomas SHIEL/DS of Scotland

Is anyone out there descended from a Thomas SHIELS or SHIELD/S (etc.), born in Scotland between about 1829 and 1836? We have been trying to find the origins of our Thomas for years (he was born about 1833, came to Aus in the 1850s, died in 1910) but he has been very hard to pin down.

We recently made up a list of all the Toms we could find in Scots OPR births and baptisms, and any of the right age in the1841 and 1851 censuses. We have eliminated about 3/4 of them by finding them in later censuses or finding their deaths. There are still a few who are eluding us, one of whom we hope will turn out to be our Tom, but we need to cross the others off the list before we can be sure.

So does anyone have an ancestor of this name (in any variation) who might have emigrated to Canada, the USA or anywhere else, from Scotland? We also have quite a collection of death certs for men who fit this description but died in Scotland, if anyone would like details.

Thanks,
Loretta
