Genter Family from Baden

Hi I'm looking for any info on the Genter family from Baden, Germany. My great great great grandfather Ludwig Genter immigrated to Massachusetts in the early 1850s and became a citizen in 1859. I know nothing on his family in Germany except he may have been from Oberachern and that his surname may have been Genther. Any info is appreciated. Thanks
-He married Mary Missett in 1865 in Brookline, Ma.

Re: Shields Family from Iowa

Hello,

I'm looking through family papers, and the list my Great Aunt Ruth (now deceased) sent me years ago has:

William Shields, Atrium County, Ireland, 1600
his son James born in Armaugh County, Ireland, 1635
his son William who married Jane Parker in 1692
his son John (Grandfather of 10 Brothers) no spouse info
his son Robert Shields who married Nancy Stockton in 1761

which sounds remarkably similar to your line, though we diverge after Nancy and Robert.

I'm a bit confused, though, as I have two Williams with a James between them. The timing seems right in terms of how old people would be when their kids got married and such, but it doesn't line up to yours.

I inherited this from my Great-Aunt who is now deceased so I can't ask her. I have handwritten notes rather than actual documents, so there is a high possibility of messing up.

Which were the ones who were sent to the Bahamas as slaves?

thanks,
Nicole Delessert née Shields

Does anyone have information about Fannie Shields born 10 Jan 1851 in I.T. Oklahoma? Died 1916 in Okfuskee County, Oklahoma. She married Thomas Harris and their daughter, Pearl Harris is my great grandmother. I can't find records of who Fannie's parents were and would love to communicate with someone if she shows up in your records. Family oral history report her to be from the Osage tribe but this may or may not be correct.
Thanks! Barbara

Shields family (Ohio, West Virginia, Virginia)

Hello Shields family descendants. I'm hoping someone has come across some of the line I'm from as I have been unable to trace it very far. My maternal grandfather was a William Russell Shields (1914-2002) born in Belmont County, Ohio. My great grand father, also born in Belmont County, was Andrew Marshall Shields (1876-1921)(m. Alta Belle Russell(1883-1963)). His father, William Carlton Shields(1814-1892), I have as being born in Virginia, which very likely would now be West Virginia. My 2 great grandmother was Hannah M McFarland(1843-1914) who was William Carlton's second wife. His first wife was a Sarah Huffman whom he had 5 sons (David W, James M, John L, Joseph E, and George W) and a daughter (Mary E) with. I lose the Shields line in the previous generation with a David Shields (m. Mary Cunningham). This is pretty much all I know of David other than he and Mary had at least 2 sons (William Carlton, and Samuel) and 2 daughters (Nancy and Hannah). If any of this sounds familiar I'd love to compare notes. Thanks

Hi Tommy, again: I've finally run down more info on Leander Shields Stephenson, born Sept. 25, 1838, in Bond Co., IL, twin son of Rob't & Catherine Shields Stephenson. I believe I may have finally found Leander's twin, Ruth Amanda, She may have died at the State Hospital for the Insane in Morgan Co., IL [divorced from a Wm R. Phipps]. Leander S. went to No. Calif. from midwest w/ wife Isabelle Wilson; then to Cowlitz Co., WA, where he died in 1887. The Ingram's Mill info in the CSU Chico files has him as "single," but he was very married then w/ children. Find census info in WA, tho' d.o.b's are wrong. I'm not near my files now; am still hunting for Rob't & Catherine's deaths + youngest son John Thomas, b. 1842. He may have enlisted in an Ohio Civil War unit; to Kansas after the war, but..?.. Please be in touch. --Shirley Mercer

I am a decendent of Gen James Shields.
The Gen had no children however he had several nieces and nephews.
My grandmothers- grandmother was Alice Jane Henson who later married Edward Howard Birk. Alice Jane Henson was a great niece of General James Shields.
If anyone has any information on this matter I am open for discussion. My grandmother is the main source of my information, I would love to find out more information while I still have her to answer questions. It is believed that Alice passed sometime around 1942. My great Grandmother Billie Birk (Grolmes) passed in the late 90's.
My Grandfather married Dorothy Dixon Hake(1899) I am also trying to locate the lines for the females, Burch, Shields, Ackerman,Dixon, and Leblanc. There must be some family out there. I have been able to connect to two distant relatives on the McKean side but they do not have info as far back as I need it.

My uncle's was done via FamilyTree DNA Company. They are doing some cross DNA with other companies in some manner. I believe different companies test different gene markers, thus the results are a little different. You might check with that company to see if this can be done. There would probably be a charge. There are a number of various SHIELDS, etc. surnames tested with that group from different DNA families.
Audrey
grannyapple1939@sbcglobal.net

It is quite likely that the Shields in my line were originally from Ireland. So far we have traced back to 1600s and are still in the Ayrshire area of Scotland and overflowing into Lanarkshire, Renfrewshire etc. I did see a tree where a William Shields left Ireland for Scotland but that was after our Shields were already in Scotland! The further back we go the name becomes Shiellie/Sheilie/Shiels etc.
I am always happy to hear from anyone who might be connected!

My uncle, Donald shields had his DNA added to the ancestry DNA register but although I have asked to be contacted by other Shields, have only had one response. My Shields line has been traced back to the Ayrshire, Scotland area and the R1B group of Artisans. Going back to the 1600-1700s the name was recorded as Shiellie or Shiels.

I just spent one evening going back through the US Census to 1830. I followed the Shields family the whole way. Your Shields's may have spent nearly 100 years living and farming in Washington (Edinboro), Erie CO. PA. Your greatgrandad Robert was in the 1930 census as Head of Household. His three children where Ralph 14, your granddad Glenn 12, and Clair 10. Roberts wife was Cora, 32 while Robert was 35. I have a lot more information and if you would like it you could email me at terry.wilcox54@gmail.com and I could mail you the papers.-------Regards---------Terry
