Hi Lisa,
Re: Images of gravestones in Pioneer Cemetery. My husband is a direct descendant of Roger Conant, and the ancestor line through his youngest daughter Fanny Conant who married William Annis. We believe that Fanny and William, and some of their children, have gravesites/headstones at Pioneer Cemetery. Would it be possible to obtain images of those headstones?
Thanks.
Elle/Glenn

Hello Hans,
I realize your post is quite old, but I just found it. There are literally thousands of Shipman's in the U.S. that decend from Daniel Shipman 1715 from Germany. No one has ever been able to make the jump back to Germany for him. If you can find or have found any information about this person, his brother Joseph, or his parents, would you please post that information here again. It would bring joy to the entire family! Thank you.

The birth date I have for my James could very well be wrong (that is simply the information I received when I started this project some four years ago) Though the confirmed marriage to a Delilah Greathouse would be a problem if the birthdate of 1825 is correct, but if my birth information is wrong, it's likely that's the wrong James altogether.

There's way to much family resemblence between your Lasander Shipman and the Shipman's from my line to be a coincidence, I think. I also know nothing about James Shipman entirely, whereas I have some semblence of an idea what happened to the other kids of Jacob and Susannah Shipman.

It's a conundrum for certain, but one that I intend to work out.

I have looked at that James Shipman b. 1817 several times and I just can't make the connection. I saw an 1850 Census with James b. 1817 and Susana b. 1822 (5 years apart). However I have an 1860 Census with James b. 1825 and Susan b. 1830 (also 5 years apart) which appears to be my James.

I also have a marriage record for James & Susan for 18 Oct 1849 in Switzerland Co IN. Also, it is recorded on my great grandfather Lasander Shipman's death certificate that his parents were James Shipman and Susan Welch. I cannot locate James past the 1860 Census when they lived in Nineveh, Bartholomew County, Indiana.

I think Susan may have been in Shelbyville, IL in the 1880 Census as a widow. I believe this is her since their son Lasander and his family were in Shelbyville IL at that time.

Interestingly enough though, I did find where an Abraham Shipman had a son James Oscar who also had a son Charles Oscar. I do not know if it is coincidence or not but Lasander Shipman had a son named Oscar b. 1885.

The 1860 Census has Lysander listed as a female b. 1853 but Lasander (male) was b. 1856. I made the connection in this Census from Fernando Holland Shipman who is on www.findagrave.com listing his mother and father as James Shipman & Susan Welch and says he was born in Switzerland Co IN. However, I do know for sure that Lasander had a brother Lee b. 1858 and he is not on this 1860 Census.

And so it goes. If you would like to view my tree on ancestry.com let me know and I will send you an invitation. I keep it private since I have not confirmed all information and don't want others to think it is all correct.

My connection to Lasander Shipman is two-fold. He is my blood line as great grandfather on my dad's maternal side. One of his son's from his first family was the 2nd husband of my great grandmother on my mother's maternal side. (no blood line connection since it was her 2nd marriage).

There's a possibility we might be from a similar line. I have researched the Shipman family in and around Switzerland County Indiana for sometime, and this is what I've been able to find.

The progenitor of this Shipman line is a Jacob Shipman, born in 1789 in Pennsylvania. He married Susannah Meddock (possibly Susannah Maddox) who was the daughter of Moses Meddock (or Maddox). After settling in Butler County Ohio, they had the following children I am certain of:

Thomas Shipman (b. 1811)
Keziah Shipman (b. 1814; married Joseph F. McGrew, died sometime around 1900 in Nebraska)
Sarah Ann Shipman (born 1816; married Ross Marsh, death unknown)
James Shipman (born 1817; married Delilah Greathouse, possibly had a second marriage to Susan Welch)
Abraham Shipman (my ggg-grandfather; born 1819; married Harklaney Russell in 1838. She died in 1847. Remarried a Mary, maiden name unknown, prior to 1860. Died in 1889)
Lucy Shipman (born 1821; married Galon Maddock)
Hiram B. Shipman (born 1827; married Rebecca Allen)

This is what I am certain of. The way you tie in possibly is through James. I cannot definitively find James past the marriage record of 1938 in which he married Delilah Greathouse. The original information I started from suggested that he died before 1850, but my research indicates it was Delilah who died, and that James likely remarried. If this is the case, then he could have very well remarried Susan Welch. I'm not certain on any children they may or may not have had, as I have not researched this family line yet, focusing more on Abraham and his kids.

I have also corresponded with a man named Frank Shipman, who gave me information out of an old Shipman family bible (that sadly was lost in a fire) that stated that the father of Jacob Shipman was Christian Shipman, who was one of the sons of the semi-famous Harmon Shipman of New Jersey.

Good Afternoon, I have recently been trying to go up the Shipman family tree to find out more about my ancestors and i saw your post so i decided to make contact. I would like to help you but sadly I know very little about them and I do not have much info to offer. Well thank you for your time.
John

Here's a copy of the Eulogy for Robert, given at West Point:
(Also contains some history on Rodden photography studio in Abilene: seems the studio didn't open until about 1924.)

Robert M. Rodden
No. 14079* 28 Jun 1922 - 30 Mar 2002
Died in Fairfield, CA
Interred in USMA Post Cemetery

Robert Morris Rodden died March 30, 2002, after a lifetime of commitment and dedication to the nation he loved. Born in New Mexico as the only child of Robert and Pearl Rodden, he moved at the age of two with his family to Abilene, Texas, where the family opened and operated a photography studio. Bob spent his entire childhood in Abilene and developed a life-long interest in photography.

During his last year in high school, Bob enlisted in the National Guard so he could experience the privilege of riding horses. A year later his unit was called to active duty and he quickly found himself stationed with the First Cavalry on the Texas-Mexico border. Twenty months in this assignment satisfied his enthusiasm for horseback riding for the rest of his life.

During his tour with the First Calvary, Bob continued to pursue his lifelong ambition to attend the United States Military Academy. Initially an appointment to West Point was not available, so he accepted an appointment to the Naval Academy. When an appointment to the USMA did become available just six weeks before the beginning of classes, Bob quickly transferred to the USMA Class of l945. This class was that reorganized and became a part of the class of l944 because of World War II.

Plebe year was rough and he wrote home that they could expect him back by Christmas. Once accustomed to the rigors of academy life, however, he had few difficulties. The one subject that truly perplexed him was French. He often would recall with a laugh how the professor would refer to him as lhomme de Texas because of his unusual pronunciation.

Bob was proud to choose an assignment to the Engineers and, after D-Day graduation, he completed the Basic Course at Belvoir before joining the 1346th Engineer Combat Battalion at Camp Polk, La. In March of 1945, the unit was transferred to Okinawa to prepare for the invasion of Japan. He was among the first American troops to enter and occupy Japan, an assignment that would last two years.

In June of 1946, Bob was transferred to the 8th Engineer Squadron of the 1st Cavalry Division. He returned stateside in July of that year to marry Betty Schaaff in Washington, D.C. Betty was able to join him four months later in Japan for the balance of his two-year tour.

While on leave between assignments, Bob received a change of orders sending him to the Armed Forces Special Weapons Project at Sandia Base, New Mexico. He unsuccessfully fought this tooth and nail because he had his heart set on another troop command. Later, however, Bob felt it was one of the best things that ever happened to his career for it redirected his focus into the Special Weapons field. During the family? three-year stay at Sandia, his two children, Robb and Betsy, were born.

1951 to 1954 saw three years of schooling: one year at the Naval Postgraduate School, two years at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1954 the University of California, Berkeley, awarded Bob an advanced degree in Bioradiology. He was subsequently assigned to the Atomic Support Agency in Washington, D.C. Bob?s duty at the Pentagon spanned six years, broken up by one year at the Command & General Staff College at Fort Leavenworth in 1957. It is likely that, of his entire career, he most enjoyed his years at the Pentagon. It was during that time that he felt he truly was making a specific, worthwhile contribution to the defense of the nation.

In 1960, Bob was assigned to the Army Standardization Group in London where he supported efforts to standardize methods and equipment with the British and NATO forces, though he felt the successes were few. As his tour concluded in 1964 orders came for the National War College, but with two children facing college, Bob felt it was best to turn down the commitment. This was a decision he seconded guessed for the rest of his life. Instead, he was assigned to go to Lawrence Radiation Laboratory in Livermore, California, where he worked on nuclear weapons delivery systems.

In 1965 Bob retired as a lieutenant colonel, receiving the Meritorious Service Medal, and began a second career with Stanford Research Institute. He became Director of the Institutes Center for Resources and Environmental Systems Studies, supervising a staff that included over 50 research professionals. Betty organized and operated her own learning disabilities education center.

In 1977, Bob left SRI and established RMR Associates, an energy consulting firm specializing in cogeneration. During the late 70s and early 80s, he consulted for U.S. petroleum producers and the Venezuelan oil industry, doing feasibility evaluation and preliminary design for small electric power plants.

In 1982, Bob and Betty moved to Carmel-by-the-Sea where ?We have a great view of the Carmel Bay and the Pacific Ocean, and enjoy watching ships and whales go by. Bob maintained his consulting business until 1990. Bob enjoyed golf at two clubs, was Treasurer of Meals on Wheel, and helped with fund raisers for the Monterey Museum of Art, and Monterey Institute of International Studies.

In 1992 Betty and Bob moved to the Cypress in Hilton Head, S.C. In spite of being diagnosed with Parkinson?s, Bob enjoyed his newfound freedom, travel, and the opportunity to walk out his back door and play golf. However, in 2000, with his entire family on the west coast, he felt it was time to move back to California and he and Betty relocated to Paradise Valley Estates near San Francisco. Tragically, one month after the move he had a disabling stroke.

Bob was an ardent and life-long supporter of the Army and West Point. He upheld with pride its traditions throughout his life. Reunions and time with classmates always had priority. He was active in Rotary, Seniors in Retirement, and Army Navy and Quail Country Clubs. His interests were many, but foremost were his love of family his wife, Betty, his children Betsy and Robb and their spouses, and his grandchildren, Bobby, Christina, David and Beth. He was a loving husband, proud father, doting grandfather, and a true friend. He will be sorely missed.

When Bob passed away, his enduring wish to return to West Point was granted.

Hoping someone on this message board might help identify these ladies. I have a photo of the three of them that's labled "Rodden" Abilene, Texas. I'm assuming Rodden was either the name of the studio or photographer. Given the age of the photo and their manner of dress, I'm guessing it was from the 1890 time frame, perhaps later.

The girls look to be in their late teens or early twenties.

Its one of a number of unidentified photos I've inherited from my family who lived in and around Taylor County, Texas.

I've found a couple of Shipman families living in Jones County, Texas about the right time frame, but no certain match for these three girls who appear to be sisters.

Thanks.
I am a cousin of your Eugene W. Shipman and have researched the Shipman family for many years. The last entries I have are Eugene W. b.ca 1915 with an entry he may have passed away in 1992 in Elmhurst Il. I also have a Sister Dodothy b. ca 1918. I was aware hs father Eugene lived in Chicago and ran a Company there in the 1920's.
I live in Canada just a short 20 miles from Almonte Ontario once called Shipman's Mills.
I've seen the information showing Clarinda M. born Oct. 25, 1854 - claiming she is d/o your Nicholas c. 1814 & Nancy. But she is not on the 1860 nor 1870 census, so my assumption is if she really existed and was Nicholas C's daughter that she presumably died before that 1860 census. I'm happy to share files with you - hope someday we can find more confirmatory evidence for this Shipman line. - Allan Griffith - magriffy@comcast.net

You've given me a bit more to research, and thank you. I'm going to have to re-research my census entries on Nicholas b. 1814. I do not have any siblings for him, at this point, and tentatively had his parents as Stephen b 1788 and Eleanor, no dates. Parents names still needing to be confirmed. As you can tell, you are further along in your research of this line and I'm not sure I can shed much light at this time. I have a note to also research a possible daughter of Nicholas, Clorinda Margory Shipman b. 1854 d. 1936? Don't know where she fits, if at all. I do have census for 1860 thru 1930 confirming my James b. 1858 and that's about it. Will keep in touch and thanks again for responding, Beckie

Beckie, I'm not sure all that is out there about our Shipman's of Indiana can be trusted... but if it can, then your Nicholas 1814-1893 had a middle initial "C" & was a younger brother of my ancestor, Elizabeth Shipman 1810-1893 (could those two siblings really have died in the exact same year?) - both children of Stephen Shipman 1788-1849 & Elenor "Nellie" Gifford (or maiden name Sturgeon?) 1787-1871. Those parents went back and forth between Indiana & Hardinville, (Crawford Co), Illinois. So, true or not, what about this other Nicholas Shipman born within 6 years of yours? 1808. For now, I'm showing Nicholas 1808-1891 is a young brother of our mutual ancestor, Stephen, but this is in my opinion still speculation. Many people seem to think Stephen 1788 & Nicholas 1808 are sons of Nicholas Shipman and wife Mary... but this is in my opinion equally speculative. P.S., my Elizabeth married Wm. Jefferson Moore, brother of Nancy Ann Moore who was in turn married to James Robert Shipman who was a brother of your Nicholas 1814 & my Elizabeth. I'd enjoy hearing your thoughts. - Allan Griffith, NEW Email: magriffy@comcast.net

We have a connection. My grandmother was Ocie Lena Shipman, daughter of Alpha Jane Trusler and Alonzo Shipman whose father was John Hollis Shipman. From John Hollis Shipman the line goes to John Bogue Shipman to Nathaniel Shipman to Abner Shipman and I think to William Shipman. This is where I am stuck. According to the information I got from Ancestry.com the next in the line is William Shipman, spouse unknown, to William Shipman and Hannah Brown, to William Shipman and Alice Hand, to Edward Shipman and Elizabeth Comstock and then to Edward Shipman and Mary Stecz. Is this correct?

Shipmans seem to be well documented, not so for Muckle/Meikle, Rogers and Smythe. Nancie was the last to proof and add to the family tree. Looking forward to hearing from you. Katherine PS Have belt buckle that we would like to send Bill.
