Hello Jenny
I also go back to George Shorney and Sarah Shepherd via their son Henry. I am certain that George's parents are James and Mary Dibble from a family history written down in the 1930s and from parish register transcriptions. Further back to John and Ann Cridland is a possible.
Contact me if you are still watching this thread!
Daphne

hi andrea, thanks for that. I sort of came to that same conclusion unofficially. What info are you looking for? I am at the basic stages as such and havent proven anything as such. Which member are you following? From a later census Jane phillips was born in Brompton Ralph about 1782, ( 1861 I think she is living with Harriet her daughter who married a Chorley) Anyway let me know what you are after and I will see what I can help with. I think the Irish bit may be a myth, but I am open to any ideas.
Monika
I know that your inquiry is two years old now but better late than never.
Did you ever have a reply re the subject above.
At the time in question there were two James Shorney's of a similar age living in the Nether Stowey, Dodington, Overstowey, Charlynch, Spaxton area. Yes a James Shorney from Holford married a Mary Dibble from Doddington in 1760 and another James Shorney from Nether Stowey married Joan Rich from Spaxton in Charlynch in 1754.
The problem is that we know that one of the James's parents were John Shorney born Stogursey in 1688 who was married in 1717 to Ann Cridland born in 1686 in Nether Stowey.
The big questions are; who did the son of John & Ann Shorney marry and who were the parents of the other James and where did they come from ?
Get in touch with me on ted.shorney@talktalk.net

SHORNEY of the QUANTOCK area, SOMERSET

Six or seven years ago, there was a spate of correspondence on this board about the Shorneys of Stogursey, Charlynch, Nether Stowey, etc. Then it dried up because, I think, the participants took their discussion offline. I would really like to revive it, because I need some help.
I’ve traced a branch of my family back to John Shorney and Ann Cridland who apparently married in 1717.
While much of my data comes from IGI and from other online and cd parish record transcriptions, a few details (incl. the date of the above marriage) come only from OneWorldTree (OWT), which is often unreliable.
I believe that my descent is from John and Ann’s son James (bap. 15 Mar 1730, Nether Stowey), who married Mary Dibble at Holford in 1760, and then from their son George who married Ann Shepherd in 1792
I’m sure of my facts back to George and Ann, but I have only the OWT to say that a)George was the son of James and Mary, b) that James Shorney did indeed marry Mary Dibble, and c) that the James who married Mary Dibble was the James, son of John and Ann.
Can anyone help?
Jenny
Shorneys in Bristol

Hey! I come from a line of Shorneys that live in Bristol (and Portishead, etc.) I believe that my line of Shorneys came over from Ireland during the Potato famine, and then settled in Wales and the South West of England (??) My grandfather (who is in his 70s) was born in Wales, and had many brothers and sisters. The siblings all now live around the Bristol area. My gradfather's name is Thomas George Shorney (I'm Thomas George Kenneth Shorney!) and his father, I believe, was also a Thomas Shorney.

I'd appreciate any help in finding out more about my family tree, and whether they connect to yours...

Thanks, Tom

I've just read your reply to Rosalie. I think the marriage you're referring to was of John Shorney and Ann Davy, at Nether Stowey on 2nd February 1749. I'd noted this down, but not firmly connected it with our James.

Thanks, Jonathan. The names Pridham and Bridham are just two spellings of a number of alternatives. I've presumed the "P" version is correct from the birth certificates of several of Sarah's children, when she spells her middle name thus. Also, her own baptism spells it that way. However - you know what parish records are like! I now have the RICH family line back to the mid-1500s, thanks to a lady in Australia. If you e-mail me, I'll pass it on to you. I am at: kvilhaugveien@aol.com. (Don't be put off by a Norwegian handle on an American server - I'm in Bath!)

Hi everyone.
I am researching my g-g-grandparents Frank Shorney and Sarah Williams.According to the 1881 Census Frank was born in 1851 in Over Listcombe? (County not known). Sarah was born in 1854 in Exeter Devon. In 1881 they were living in Newport, Monmouthshire, were the family have lived ever since. Any help would be much appreciated, especially the whereabouts of Over Listcombe. Is this a mis-spelling perhaps
With hope, Barbara Marsh

Hello all, this is a reply to Roy, darn it I forget what he asked, because in the meantime I have copied every message on this board and pasted it into Word, so I can read it from beginning to end. Guys, we are going around in circles. Lets share our email addresses and write to each other as a group direct. Back to Roy, most of my pre 1850 Shorney information that relates to England was provided by Lesley Morgan. I had found some information from IGI and had some anecdotal info. but as Lesley took her info. from Census returns and Parish registers, wherever there was a variation, I have adopted Lesley's information. Where you have given me a private email address in the past, I will send you my tree and you can get back to me privately please and tell me how you think we all fit together. My address is shorney@omninet.net.au Rgards Rosalie

Shorney Family Tree

My mother's maiden name is Susan Shorney and my grandad was Clifford Shorney of Weston-super-Mare (UK), born 12 September 1913. His parents were Gilbert Shorney and Gertrude. Apparently they owned a guest-house in WSM and he was known as a local artist. I have just started to research my family tree but I can't find any mention of this part of the family anywhere on the net. I have an uncle John Shorney and cousins with this family name, mainly in the midlands area of the UK. Can anyone help?

Jonathan,
I would be interested to know more about your sources, since we clearly disagree about several important details. I have a lot of information about my ancestor Henry, from the censuses and his father's will. Where did you find Henry's birthplace registered as Dodington ? I have looked at the Cannington parish register several times and the entry for baptisms in 1818 is difficult to read and does look like James. I have no other evidence for a James in that family but the censuses and death certificate suggest that this person was Henry. I have not come across the other William either. Maybe we sould continue this discussion more directly since I find this bulletin board a bit cumbersome. My e-mail address is l.morgan@ucl.ac.uk but I am retired and live in Stogumber.
Lesley

Murder of Jane Shorney

Hi Richard, (was it? I can't go back to your email to check your name.)
Lesley Morgan of England is searching the Shorneys and now thinks there were 3 main families in Somerset. She thinks her branch were one of the poorer families and that my branch was the best educated of the 3.
Your John being in Stogumber would indicate either a connection or a huge coincidence.
As to Jane Shorney, I have the book published a couple of years ago, I think she must be from one of the poorer families. And my liberated nieces think the support for Walford is chauvenistic. After all, they argue that he did not have to unzip his pants. :)
Jane may not really have been half witted just a product of her time. So cheer up, we certainly had some very bright ancestors closer to my life time.
What did your father do, and grandfather etc. do? Assuming it is the male line that is your Shorney ancestors.
The name has died out in Aust. All descendants now come down female lines.

Richard, try using my email if you want to get back to me.
shorney@omninet.net.au
Cheers.
Shorney family tree

Rosalie,
I think there is a link between all of us on this Shorney message board, but some things don’t quite add up.
I believe James Shorney (my gggg-grandfather), who married Joan Rich in 1754, was the son of a John and Ann, but I don’t have Ann’s maiden name.
This cannot be the Ann Cridland you refer to if their first child was born in 1718 because this John was baptised in 1722, but I suppose he could be another of their children. I say this because my John was baptised in Stogursey, and the couple came from Bicknoller.
It is interesting you mention the Castle of Comfort because you may know of the celebrated case of a John Walford, born in Over Stowey in 1765, who married a Jane Shorney, but killed her one night on their way to the Castle of Comfort pub. After a trial at Bridgwater Assizes he was sentenced to death and became, it is thought, the last man to be hanged on a gibbet. This took place near the murder spot a short distance from the Castle of Comfort, and is marked on the Ordnance Survey as Walford’s Gibbet! Unfortunately, for us, all the accounts show public opinion very much on Walford’s side, because he had been forced to marry this “half-witted” girl after she had borne their child!
That's us then, descendants of labourers and half-wits!

Colin,
My records on this seem incorrect, as I have Samuel marrying an Agnes Bridham rather than Pridham, and having four children – all girls – namely, Sarah Bridham (presumably a middle name), Caroline (who married an N. Williams in 1852), Louisa and Agnes.

Shorney family tree

Lesley,
According to my information Henry was in fact the youngest child, or one of the youngest, of William and Rebecca. It does look as though the practice in these big families was to name the first boys John, William and James, presumably after their fathers, uncles and grandfathers. Henry comes further down the pecking order (although having said that, Jesse's first child by his first wife was indeed Henry!!).
William and Rebecca's children were Elizabeth (born 1815), James (1817), Jane (1820), Charles (1823), Christabella Withers (1826), Jesse (1828), Joseph (1828), Robert Withers (1834), William (183-), and Henry (183-) - the precise dates of the last two being unavailable.
Henry's birthplace is registered as Dodington, but apart from that I have no more information about him, but then I expect you do. It is interesting to learn that he too went to Weston, but I suppose that is to be expected because many seem originally to have been in the building trade in the Cannington area, several being described as master carpenters, and Weston must have opened up lucrative new possibilities.
My father, who is 85 this month, was born in Exeter Road, Weston, and remembers the building activity going on, although he believes it was at its peak at around 1900. In his youth it was on the wane but he moved away soon after his father died in 1928 and cannot say when it actually came to an end.
He remembers how they got stone from the local quarry, and there were builders' yards at the back of the house where the wood was left for years to cure. In one book I have seen, there is a picture of Jesse who is described as a demolition contractor, so it seems they knocked 'em down as well as put 'em up!
The houses are still there and seem to be very solid. They don't make them like they used to!
Please let me know if you have any more information about the Shorneys in Weston. I am sure my father would be interested - and it may jog his memory.

Shorney family tree

The Shorneys, under a variety of spellings, originally Shornway, date back at least to the 1500s in Somerset, which seems to have been the place of origin, dispelling a theory that the name was Irish. However, just what the source of the name is remains a mystery.
Several groups appear to have taken root in villages near the Quantocks and my ancestry dates at least from James Shorney of Charlinch who married Joan Rich in 1754.
The striking feature is the number of children these families had – ten was not uncommon – but then, let’s face it, there was no Coronation Street or Match of the Day in those days.
James and Joan had ten children, one of whom, William, married Elizabeth Hallet and had 11 children, one of whom, the unimaginatively-named William, married Rebecca Withers, who, true to form, had ten children.
One of these, Jesse, became a famous builder in Weston-super-Mare, building many houses in the Clarence Park area at a time in the late 19th century when the resort was developing rapidly. He was helped by his nephew, my grandfather Frank, who, alas, died long before I was born.
It is interesting to note how the Shorneys dispersed with the advent of the railways, while others emigrated to Australia and New Zealand. One even went down on the Titanic.
