Hello from a fellow Shown! My grandfather was named Volney Shown. As far as I know, all the Showns are related. I believe that many of my family ancestors came from the Tennessee area. I'm researching the geneology now, and will look for the name you're searching.

I'd love to hear from you about your family history. My known family line is very limited: I'm looking for more history! Thanks so much.

Janet Shown
Littleton, CO

Hi! I have had a copy of your listing for Volney Shown for a while but can't find a record that I responded. My Volney Shown was in Matagorda, Texas on the 1870 census. He was 19 years old at the time. He had a brother, Benjamin and a sister Louisa. I think that there may have been another sister named Anna. Benjamin married my g-grandmother Forestier oin 1866. They moved to central Texas later as my grandmother was born in Taylor Co. in 1884. Don't know what happened to Volney but I believe they named a son James Volney Shown. Send me an e-mail address and I will be glad to compare more notes. Jean Sample. Amarillo

Re: William Carter Shown Mahulda Lindsay - TN

William Carter SHOWN, born ca 1830 in Johnson County, TN was married on 18 Nov 1849 in Campbell Co, TN to Mahulday LINDSAY. He died in Apr 1880 in Campbell Co, TN of Typhoid Fever and is listed on the Mortality Schedule for that County in 1880. The children that I have listed for this family are, Mary (Robirds Williams), Frederick, Saloma Catherine (Thomas Weaver), William L. (Nan Evans), John Wilburn (Nancy Ellen Cox), Nancy Jane (Wesley Tate Williams), Noah W. (Betty Cooper) and Arthur Frank (Ollie Brogen).

William Carter SHOWN, the son of Frederick and Sarah Salome (Burkett) SHOWN, is the grandson of Leonard (SHOWN) SHOUN of Johnson County, TN, and his wife Virginia Barbara SLEMP SHOUN. There is SHOWN-SHOUN-SHAWN Family Association and if you are interested I will send you a link to the website.

Some of these names are subject to error because this is not my husband's line and I don't research as much on the other children as I do on JOHN S. SHOWN and his son ANDREW BAKER SHOWN (SHAWN).
I am interested in the MARTINA SHOWN who married John MOLL. The only SHOWN that I know of that lived in Perry County, MO was William J. SHOWN who married Martha GLASS in Blount County, TN. They had a daughter named Tennesse "Tenny" Jane SHOWN. She was born 1 Jan 1870 in TN, but was deceased by 1907. I have no spouse listed for her, but her mother died in Perry County, MO on 7 Jul 1875 and William J. SHOWN married her sister, Susan GLASS. There was one child born of this marriage and that was Alexander SHOWN. William J. SHOWN married Martha Chapiel in Ste. Genevieve, MO on 24 Sep 1879. This family moved to Pottawatomie County, OK and William SHOWN (listed SHOWAN on is military tombstone) died on 19 Aug 1930.

Anita, I have been a genealogical researcher of this family for over twenty years because my husband descends from the Andrew Baker SHOWN line. Andrew Baker SHOWN was the father of William J. SHOWN and William was the half-brother of my husband's grandfather, Riley Doc SHOWN.

Yes, I did know about the three children of William and Martha GLASS SHOWN. James is buried in the same cemetery as his father, in Tecumseh, Pottawatomie County, OK. John has been more difficult to locate, but lived in OK. Alexander has descendants near Antlers, OK.

The only information that I have on Tenny was the census records and someone told me she died ca 1907. Did you take pictures of her tombstone?

Are you descended from Tenny? How many children did she have? She should be listed on the 1900 census.

I'll send you a copy of William's tombstone picture.

Go to this site to learn more about the overall family.
http://www.sirinet.net/~lgarris/emiller/shoun.html

Darleen,

What a pleasure, I haven't connected with anyone who knows anything about these Shown's!

Here's what I have:

I have William Shown on the 1876 Perry County Missouri Census in the Saline Township as head of household being then 29 years old.
There is no wife listed--I do not know who Martina's mother was but I guess it was a Glass from your email.

It lists as children

Teenie Jane age 6
James And. age 4
John age 2

In family records I find that John married "Teenie" Shone (Shown).

When I visited the Catholic cemetery at Belgique, Missouri right along the mississippi river John Molls stone was there as well as Martina "Teenie" J. Moll.

Further on the LDS Site, I find the marriage of John Moll and Martina Shown on 30 October 1887,

A trip to the Perry County Library this past Friday reveals that in Book 4 of Perry County Marriage Records ...

Shown, Martina, William (father)/-18y married Moll, John M. Claryville/jp at shown res.

I don' t know anything about "Tennessee" or the death of first wife or marriage to the sister. Neither do I know anything about Teenie's siblings, especially since I show one more than you were aware of.

I am hoping you can shed some light. If you will email me with your address I can scan some of these records to you. What do you have on this gal and how do you connect?

Check on Ancestry.com and tun "Tenie or Tennie (I forgot which) Shaun. Interesting huh?

Anita
