I think that most of these children maybe Mary Shropshire's Children. I'm not sure if that is her middle name, another married name, or maiden name but at one time she was married to a James Whithorn and he changed his name to Whitton at the time of marriage or for some reason. Some of the children such as Silas changed his name at the time of seperationof Mary & James from what ever to Schropshire or maybe Shropshire. They had some children that I remember looking up as Walter, Cyrus and Silas and others. ILL., K.Y., M.O. and a couple of other places.

i just ran across your piece on the shropshire family. the names you mention are very similar to that of James M. Whithorn of Montgomery Co., Illinois. and his wife Mary C. Whithorn. they had children lillie, thomas newton, james f., wiliam jesse, sylas sylvester, and cyrus columbus. the elder james and mary divorced in 1903. the elder james married in 1906 to a helen (possibly helen harkness). can you explain how the whitton, whithorn and shropshire famiies are related. thanks, tony

My g-g grandfather Silas Shropshire told most of this info. to my dad when he was about 5 -7 years old. Silas said that his real name was not Shropshire but Whitton, Whithorn, Gaultney or Gwaultney, not sure, because of the sound. He mentioned that he was born in England and was put on a boat, at a very young age, being sent to the U.S. He may have been sent to live with a part of their family or adopted. With what I've been able to gather and trace, Silas was born Mar. 3, 1869 in England and died Mar. 9, 1956 in T.N. and buried in Luttrell T.N. Cem. Union Co. T.N. with Artil Funeral Home taking care of Funeral arrangements. He had been married about 4-5 times having around 24-25 children. His first marriage was to Nancy Jane Farmer born 1866 in T.N.
Silas and Nancy had several other children. They evenually divorced and he went on to married other women having more children. Silas's wives names were Nancy Jane Farmer(which I look just like her), Laura Breeding b.1913 Claibourne Co. T.N., Flora Thompson. I think that he had also been married to a Martha and maybe another lady. Some of Silas's childrens names are Belle, John Emmit(my g grandfather- b. May 28, 1891 T.N. died July 1, 1962 McKenny and Landreth Funeral Home took care of Funeral arrangements, buried in The Avondale Cem Cliffside N.C. along with his wife: Eunice Jackson born Jan 8 1900 in Coopers Cap N.C. and Died Dec 5 1984 buried in Avondale Cemetary, Rutherford Co. N.C. They had one child J.D. Shropshire Sr. Born Mar 29 1922 in Whitney, Spartanburg S.C. and died Oct 7 1990 buried in Sunset Memorial Cemetary, Forest City, N.C.), Lucy, Lawrance, Ocie, Roy, Ernest, Will, Woodrow, Maragret, Ethal, Lillie, Ervin, Bruce, Gracie, Ted, and others. One of Silas's daughters(my great great aunt Ethal Shropshire was born in T.N. She had been married twice. Her second husband was Jack Pressley. I spoke with her a few years ago and she told me several things about one of Silas's brothers. Clyde Moore Shropshire was born in 1866 G.A. and married Jesse Josie Egen b in T.N. both of her parents were born in Ireland. Clyde and Jesse had several children. Clyde was an attorney and was killed in Mossouri after he found a wallet near a barn of some sort. Ethal said that Silas had told her this information and I've looked some of it up and it was factual info. Clyde also was a opra singer and had other occupations. As a teenager or young man, John moved from T.N. to Saxxon, Saxton, Sexxon or Sexton Mills in S.C. with his mother, siblings and other close family members for mill work. Not only did Silas have one brother Clyde, but several siblings with info from S.C. census's of John and family members moving from T.N. to S.C. Some of these members include: Dennie B. Shropshire b.Sept. 1878, James R. Shropshire b.May 1852, Plinia H. Shropshire b.Mar. 1890, Rally Shropshire b.Jun.1894. I also just found out that one of my great grandfather Johns cousins Marie Shanks's (born in T.N.) mother was a Shropshire and that my grandparents had met one of her aunts Flora Shropshire here in Spindale N.C. back in the 70's. I will find out more about info. on this lady and see exactly how I'm kin to her. These family members maybe some king to your family in some way. If you have any info. that may connect me with further info. I would appreciate it.
Donna

donna - thank you for taking the time to answer my query. it is a most strange confluence of names and surnames, but your narrative does not seem to fit the family i had in mind. the family i had in mind was the family of james m. whithorn of montgomery co., illinois (b. 1841) who married mary c. shropshire of kentucky (b.1849) at Johnson Co., Missouri. the marriage names were recorded as james m. whitton and Mary Shropshire, but, in fact, his surname remained whithorn. interestingly to me, at least, until this generation was born, james' father and forbears generally spelled their names Whitehorn and this famly of Whithorns are fairly close relatives. what caught my eye is that the whitehorn/whithorn family is from va, ky, and in some cases, mo. james and mary shropshire had among their 9 children a Silas and a Cyrus, both names are unique in the whitehorn/whithorn setting and, who knows, may have had their roots on the shropshire side of the family to which your gggrandfather or other shropshires may be related.

I've sort of just been grasping for straws since I've been stuck on my g-g grandfather side of the family, (dead end). I will let you know some about my g-g grandfather and see if you may know any connection any way to your Shropshire side of the family. My g-g grandfather, Silas(or went by Silas) Shropshire told my dad a few things when he was a young boy. Silas said that he was put on a ship for the U.S. as a very very young boy. I'm not sure if he came to live with family or to be adopted. He said that his mothers name was Sally and that he didn't know his father. Silas said that his real name wasn't Shropshire that it was something like, Wilmoth, Waltney, Gwaltney or Gaultney, not sure. I never met him, he died Mar. 9, 1956. Silas was born, Mar. 3, 1869, he said in England. He was married to my g-g grandmother, Nancy Jane Farmer b abt 1866 T.N., d. Sept. 19, 1947 Spartanburg S.C. Nancys parents were Matilda and Gertherie Farmer. Silas and Nancy had several children including my g grandfather John Emmit Shropshire. Nancy(went by Janie)moved to Spartanburg S.C. bringing her children some had already moved out by: 1920 to, South Carolina Census
Janie Shropshire age 53 b.T.N.
Lawrence Shropshire son age 14 b.T.N.
Lucy Shropshire dau age 11 b.T.N.
Along with other family members such as Dennie B. Shropshire b.Sept. 1878, Grey A. Shropshire b.July 1887,
Dee Alston Shropshire Mar. 1884 neice to James R. May 1852.& Alice. Some of the other names are Plinia H. Shropshire b.Mar. 1890, Rally D. Shropshire b.Jun. 1894 m. Mae G. 12-7-73. Some was born in Spartanburg S.C., K.Y. and some in T.N.
Silas married Flora Thompson b. 1897 m.1916 not sure of their children. Silas was then married to Laura Breeding b.1885 d.1949 T.N. m.1920. Silas and Laura had several children. Silas and Laura are both buried Luttrell T.N. Cem. Union Co. T.N. with Artil Funeral Home taking care of Funeral arrangements.
My g-g Aunt Ethel Shropshire told me several years ago that Silas had a brother Clyde and that he had got killed in Missouri in the early 1900's. He was killed near a barn after finding a wallet. Other then this info. I can't find anything past Silas or anymore info. on Silas. He may have had another name, not sure. I'm not even sure to whether he made alot of this info. up. If any of this info. triggers any kind of info. that you know that could help me, please let me know. I appreciate any info.
Thanks,
Donna Shropshire Caviness
