1770 Guilford County formed from Orange and Rowan County NC

This just came to my Attention that Winkfield Shropshire could not have been born in Guilford Co NC in the year 1761. This Shropshire family would have to be in Orange or Rowan Co NC if they were in or on lands becoming Guilford Co. NC

I am looking for the parents of my great-great-great grandfather, Hugh S. Shrophsire. He was born March 1882 in Tennessee, and died in 1966 in Rockwood County, Tennessee. He was married to Sophia Hance in 1903 in Cocke County, Tennessee, and together they had several children. He also lived in Campbell County and Davidson County, Tennessee. The only thing I've been able to find about his parents is that they are both from Tennessee. I've looked everywhere for information and have not been able to find it. I would much appreciate anyone's help in this. Thank you!!!!

Katie Labor
jlabor@mail.utexas.edu

I also point out that Winkfield Shropshire who died in Franklin County is on the 1812 Tax list, His son James Shropshire is an Adult and also on the Tax list with seperate places.

His son James Shropshire was also the executor to his will, which means again James Shrsopshire is and adult when his father died. I thnk Winfield Shropshire died in 1816 in FRANKLIN CO TN.

So James Shropshire Sr. of FRANKLIN COUNTY, could have already had a family under way in 1813.

Where did Nancy Rays parents live that he married and what Creek did the Shropshire and Hill families live on in Franklin Co. TN. as the land will hold your answers ( Check land deeds) Check where Rays lived in 1840 and where did Shropshires live.

THOMAS HILL, b/22 Dec 1759 near Dan River Guilford Co. NC

Winkfield Shropshire died in Franklin Co. Tn. is the son of Winkfield Shropshire abt 1725 died 1798 in Oglethorpe,, Georgia, and Jane Jones born in Rowan Co. NC. She died 1834 in Franklin Co. NC

Notes Tony, the Shropshires (the first to this area) lands were near the Virginia border of Rockingham/Henry County line on Buffalo Creek near Stoneville, NC. They attended Matrimony Primitive Baptist Church along with the Hill family of who many of them married up with. Winkfield Shropshire moved on to Georgia then on to Tennessee. Saint John Shropshire remained in Rockingham County and I believe died here and was connected to a Mary "Polly" Shropshire (who was possibly his daughter). Polly Shropshire also lived and died here in Rockingham County. Somehow Saint John obtained his brother's land and then either sold or lost it to Dutton Hill. Polly Shropshire purchased this land back and Saint John's name remained on the deed as "lands formerly belonging to Saint John Shropshire" for over 70 years on into the early 1900s. Polly had a daughter named Elizabeth Shropshire who also had children.

So, the creeks in Rockingham County was "Buffalo Creek" and it forks nearby where his land was located. Also, this Matrimony Primitive Baptist Church was very close to his lands.
Hope this has helped.
Sheralene

It is possible that James and Abraham are the same person. I don't know anything about them. However, Joel's widow, Mary (Polly) married Stirling May and together with their extended families, migrated to Johnson County, AR in 1838.

Do you have any information on James' children that you mentioned earlier?

Horace

Thank you for your contribution. I have no data on this James Shropshire (b. 1795).
I don't believe that he is a son of Joel (b. 1768) and Mary Johnson Shropshire. They had 7 childen including 3 sons: Hudson (1802, John T.(abt 1808) and Thomas H.(abt 1809).
I will appreciate any information about the above James.
I'm interested in this James Shropshire (born c1795) as well. Helping a descendant of James try to get the line back further. I think perhaps Nancy is his second wife, as he seems to have children that predate their 1843 marriage. Is it possible that he's a son of Joel Shropshire and Mary "Polly" Johnson?
Hope some one out there is familar with this James' parents.
Does anyone have any info on the international society of shropshire's. While at the mormon geneology center in salt lake city,Utah i found some booklet's on this society, but did not have enough time to thoroughly look thru them. I wrote down their address as Rt 2 box 298A Staunton,va 24401. They had a phone# which is no longer in use & do not have a listing in this city to contact them. Does anyone know if they have a web site for accessing their shropshire geneology? This is my grandmother bettie elizabeth shropshire's maiden name. My time spent at the geneology center was just not long enough as i live in alabama & we were visiting my husband's family. Thank you for what you can provide in this matter. Also do you know of anyone who is researching the samuel shropshire/ann dixie line. If i'm right i'm one of 13 generation's of shropshire's. Thanks

Hi Dottie:

Just got your message- glad to see there is someone out there who is connected. All is well (I think) with Aunt Lou and Uncle Lee... as far as I know! I haven't had a shout-out from Dad, so I'm feeling assured that all is well with Lou and Lee. There are days that I dive into the family tree and it can be hours chasing leads. I am sorta clear on the Shropshire's, but as you know, one thread can lead to a thousand and then its sorting them out. I am really trying to get a handle on Oliver S. Brown (Louise's first; but then you know that) and his father, so far I think I have connected him to Virginia- again a lead and a thread. One of these days, I hope to make it to Detroit to do some research. In the meantime, I sure would like to get a copy of any of the Shropshires. I never got to meet Louise and would love to know more about her and Lucille and Oliver S.

Hugs and affection from California

Your Cousin, Erick
I just ran across this post and was wondering if you ever got information on Eden (Draper) Shropshires. I am the daughter of Dillard Shropshire (deceased) from the Draper section of Eden. His father was Bland Millard or Millard Bland born around 1901, and his mother was Ethel Murphy Shropshire. His brothers were Garnet, Jerry, and Joseph. His sisters were Ruth, Vera, and Becky.
Sorry that it took me so long to reply but I haven't been working on my genealogy very much lately. I have been so busy!
I have a huge book on the Shropshires of Eden. I have photos of Bland and his parents and siblings and birth cert. and military records galore. I have met your father on several occassions and went to school with Derek.
My grandfather was Paul Shropshire. His father was Clint, and Bland was Clint's brother. Write me back to let me know that you got this and I would be more than happy to send you what you need!
Desiree

In particular I am looking for anything on John Thickins who married Rachel Telford at St. Marys in Lichfield 28 April 1800, but also any other Thickins of that time as I believe they would all be related in some way.

My great grandfather, Louis Alexander Cooper, married Laura Shropshire. I believe his brother George Cooper married Laura's sister Lonnie.

However, I am not descended from the Shropshire line. Before Louis "Alec" Cooper married Laura, he was married to a different woman and they had a son, Burl Cooper. This was my grandfather. The only problem is, we do not know who this woman was. Does anyone have information regarding who the first wife of Louis Alexander Cooper was? The only hint we have found is that they were married on July 13 1901. Please email me at cdc77@windstream.net

Thank you!

I too am always chasing leads. I haven't worked on my Shropshire line lately but do have quite a biton them. I have never tried to trace Aunt Louise's first husband but maybe I'll give it a try one of these days. What do you want a copy of? Records or Photos. I did meet Aunt Louise many times as we always stopped at her house on the way to Cave Spring each summer as a child. I remember my dad would drive up an old dirt road that was very steep and could only go so far and we would have to get out of the car and walk the rest of the way. She'd always be there waiting for us to make it to the top. I have a picture of her standing on a mound or mountain I believe. Do you have that picture? The one that I have is a copy though. I got it from Uncle Richard. I never met Lucille either. I think I found some records on her though. Our cousin in Chattanooga, Rosetta, knew them both. She knows a lot about the Shropshires. Maybe you should try to make it to our Reunion in Orlando (we almost chose Disneyland in California)in July. You could learn so much about our family. I'm sure Rosetta will be there. I'm hosting it and making all of the arrangements long distance from up here in Detroit. Let me know if you need the info. I'd be glad to e-mail it to you. And any other family info.
Great talking to you again.

Cousin Dottie

Morrall Family of Plas Yolyn

I have a will of an Edward Lloyd of Shrewsbury d 1790 - amongst the beneficaries are:

Cousin Charles Morrall of Chester surgeon
Sisters of Charles - Susan and Frances
Cousin Thomas Morhall - mercer of London
William son of Charles (god son of Edward Lloyd above).

I think that these are the Morrall family of Plas Yolyn and Kilhendre. In order for the above Edward Lloyd and Charles Morrall to be cousins there has to be a marriage between my Lloyds and the Morrall family.

According to Burke's 'History of The Commoners of Great Britain and Ireland' Tobias married Margaret Lloyd, sister of Sir Edward Lloyd of Pengwern. I was wondering whether this Margaret Lloyd could have been misidentified. More likely there could be another connection altogether.

I am hoping that someone may be able to throw some light on this matter.

Tony Wardroper
