John Sidler 1823-1860

I am looking for any information on John Sidler. He was born in Germany about 1823. He died before the 1860 census. John was married to Magaret Petitt around 1848 in the state of New York. Margaret's parents were John B Petitt and Catherine R., both were born in New York. Margaret was born about 1830 in New York and died before the 1910 census. The only record I have found for John is the 1850 census for Irondequoit, Monroe Co., New York. However his last name was spelled at SADLER. The 1850 census included John, Margaret, Andrew (first son which was 9 months old) and an Andrew Shune?(can't make out the spelling) who was also from Germany.

In 1860 Margaret was remarried to a Joseph Grant and they were still living in Irondequoit, New York with 4 children Andrew, William, Teresa and Mary (Teresa and Mary are incorret names. Don't know who give the information on the family but the 2 girls are boys Henry and Fredrick.) In 1870 the family mored to Huron, Wayne Co., New York following Margaret's parents there. This census includes Joseph Grant, wife Margaret, Andrew, William, Henry, Fredrick and Joseph (son of Joseph and Margaret). On the 1880 census for Huron, Wayne Co., New York was Joseph Grant, wife Margaret, Henry Sidler and Joseph Grant.

Andrew Sidler was born about 1849 in Irondequoit, New York and died 1-2-1872 in Wayne Co., New York. He is in the Evergreen Cemetery in Wayne Co., New York

William Sidler was born 4-11-1852 in Irondequoit, New York and died 8-30-1926 in Wayne Co., New York. He married Lillian Rozella Demmon on 7-27-1877 in North Rose, Wayne Co., New York. William and Lillian had 6 children: Flora Virgina, Walter Demmon, Arthur Emmons, Harry Eugene, Mary Elizabeth and Nina Marguerite.

Henry Sidler was born Dec. 1853 in Irondequoit, New York. He is found on the census under Sidler or Grant. It seems he never got married.

Fredrick Sidler was born May 1854 in Irondequoit, New York. Believe he married Alice E. but had no children.

I am trying to find more information about John Sidler. I would like to find out who his parents are and if he had any brothers or sister. Where he was born and when he come to the USA.

Thanks
Katie

Re: Sidlers in South Western Pennsylvania

Hi Patty,
It has been a long time since you requested information from me on the Sidlers of Altoona. I just retired and will only be working part time, so maybe I will go back to doing some ancestry research. Sidler SW Pa Research, change of e-mail address, My e-mail address has been changed from keeferh@keeferh.com to keeferh@gmail.com. There is a lot of information posted on the Ancestry .com bulletin board dealing with the Sidlers. Hope that your research is going well. I am including some of the information which I have on the research. I hope that it is usefull to you.
Here is the information:
I am Robert H. Keefe, one of the sons of Clement F. Keefe and Veronica Cecelia Sidler Keefe. I have been doing a little genealogical research, and see that you are also researching the Sidler/Sitler linage in South Western PA. You may find the below information helpful in your quest. As you can see, my Great grandfather was Clement Sidler form Altoona and was a brother of Otto Sidler from Altoona PA as noted on his obituary, at the time of his death in 1913. This must have been Otto Sidler Sr. since there are no siblings listed for him on the ancestry. Com genealogical charts, but Otto Sidler Jr. has numerous siblings listed. These two are the only Otto Sidlers which I can locate in Altoona PA in the year 1913.
Mary Rodland Sidler's death certificate shows her father to have originally be Lawrence Rothland from Germany, and her mother's maiden name to have been Mary Sidler, and was to have been born in PA.
Altoona Tribune
Pg. 4; Column 2
Wed, Dec. 25, 1907

Mrs. Mary Sidler
At 5:25 o’clock Tuesday morning Mrs. Mary Sidler, wife of Clement Sidler, the well known night janitor at the city hall, died at her home, Twenty-fourth avenue and Fifth street, of dropsy after an extended illness. Deceased was born at Piney Creek, Blair County, on November 13, 1851, and had resided in this city for the past forty-four years. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church and is survived by her husband and the following children, James, Clement, Mrs. Mary Oswald, and Mrs. Catherine Dropp, of Altoona; John W., and Miss Clara, at home. She is also survived by these brothers and sisters, Henry Rodland, of Martinsburg; John Rodland, of Hollidaysburg; Mrs. Nancy Murray and Mrs. Elizabeth Killinger, of this city. The remains can be viewed from 7 to 9 o’clock this evening and on Thursday evening. The funeral cortege will leave the house at 9 a.m. Friday and proceed to St. Mary’s Catholic church where services will be conducted at 9:30 o’clock. Interment will be made in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Altoona Mirror
Friday, Mar. 14, 1913
Pg. 20, Column 1

Clement J. Sidler,
At one time night janitor at city hall and for many years employed as a janitor of the St. John’s church, died suddenly this morning at 7:35 o’clock of heart trouble. Deceased had been in ill health during the past few days and had been confined to his home, 522 Twenty-fourth Avenue, but his condition was not alarming. Mr. Sidler was born in Cumberland, Md., on May 22, 1846. He resided in Maryland during his early life, removing to Altoona forty-five years ago. He had been a resident of this city since that time. For a number of years he was employed at the old Central hotel, which was destroyed by fire Jan. 5, 1896. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church and also a member of the St. Joseph’s society. He is survived by three sons and three daughters: James L., John “W., Clement, jr., Mrs. John Oswold, Mrs. Catherine Dratt and Miss Clara Sidler, all of Altoona, and a brother, Otto Sidler, of Altoona, and a sister, Mrs. Joseph E. Metzgar, of Huntingdon county. The funeral will be held on Monday morning at 9 o’clock. Mass will be celebrated in the St. Mary’s church. Interment will be made in St. Mary’s cemetery.

Robert H. Keefe’s Great grandfather was Clement Sidler form Altoona who was listed in his obituary as being a brother of Otto Sidler from Altoona PA, at the time of his death in 1913. This must have been Otto Sidler Sr. since there are no siblings listed for him on the ancestry.com genealogical charts, but Otto Sidler Jr. has numerous siblings listed. These two are the only Otto Sidlers which I can locate in Altoona PA in the year 1913.

Clement Sidler b. May 1846 md. abt. 1868 Mary in Pa ~ b. Nov. 1850 in Pa. d. This Clem J. Sidler was born in Cumberland MD according to his obituary. However, according to his death certificate, he was born in Switzerland, with his parents being listed as Clement J. Sidler and Mary (maiden name: Gerald ) Sidler, both from Switzerland.
From Switzerland 1867
Clement Sidler b. May 1846 md. abt. 1868 Mary in Pa ~ b. Nov. 1850 in Pa. d.
Dec. 324 1907 (56)
in 1900 lived at Logan Twp., Altoona, Pa
Children:

James L. Sidler
John W. Sidler . ~ b. Nov. 1880
Clement Jacob Sidler ~ b. May 1883, md. Julia M., children, Albertha A.,
Julia A., Lucy C., Martha C., Anna H., Ruth E., Clement J. Jr., Fred V., Jane
E., and Joseph Sidler
Lawrence James Sidler, married: Cecelia Teresa Gallagher b. May 1878 d., July 29, 1955
Children:
Infant son d. Sept. 16, 1901
Lawrence b. Jan 1903, d. Aug. 30, 1903
Veronica b. May 24, 1904 married: Clement Francis Keefe, d: Oct. 1985 Children
Mary Francis Keefe Sarver, James J. Keefe, Robert H. Keefe, Vincent C. Keefe

I hope that you find this information to be useful in your endeavors. Our Sidlers are listed as coming from Switzerland and Pennsylvania in the mid 1800’s, with a possible link to Cumberland Maryland. Mary Rodland Sidler's death certificate shows her father to have originally been Lawrence Rothland from Germany, and her mother's maiden name to be Mary Sidler, who was born in Pennsylvania. Mary Rodland was the wife of Clement Jacob Sidler, my great grandfather. A cousin told me that Clement Jacob Sidler is the name that is assumed by succeeding generations. When the Sr. passes on the next Clement Jacob Sidler Jr. becomes the Clement Jacob Sidler Sr.

I am also looking for information on my grandmother Cecelia Teresa Gallagher Sidler’s family. She was born in Altoona PA on May 17, 1873 and died on May 14, 1907. Her father was James Gallagher and her mother’s maiden name was Rebeca Gary, (born around 1830, baptized at ST Vincent Parish, prior to the establishment of St. Vincent College, around 1832) with both listed as having been born in PA. Rebeca Gary was apparently descended for the Wallace's (descended from the Whitelaws of Vermont in the 1700s, and Gallagher's of the Fort Wallace period prior to the time of the American Revolution. One of the GGGGreats, Nancy Wallace, was born at Hannastown Fort located in Westmoreland County of PA, some time before the American Revolution. Those Gallagher (Gallaher) came from up-state New York, and their ancestors were from Northern Ireland; where-as, the Gallagher's in the later tree were from a county in southern Ireland.
Any information on any of these ancestors would be greatly appreciated.
I can be reached on the Internet at Keeferh@gmail.com,

Regards, Bob Keefe
Believe that my great grandmother Anna Schreiber (b approx 1877-1966) was of this family. (She married Louis Knecht--an orphan, also of Switzerland 1869-1941, and emigrated to US in 1906 with their son Hans and then had my grandfather Frederick) They lived in Bergen County NJ. Anna's cousin or nephew Zenon Schreiber (1904-89)(son of her brother?)also was born and lived in NJ.

My mothers maiden name was Sidler and her family came from Altoona PA and Hagerstown MD. I have been told by relatives on that side of the family that their ancestoire came from the same town that William Tell came from in Switzerland, and that they immigrated to the USA around the middle of the 19tn century. It is interesting to note that my Great Great on that side married a lady whose mother's maiden name was also sidler, but was born in Pennsylvania, in the early 1800s. I guess that there were Sidlers already here at that time the Swiss Sidlers imigrated.

All from Kussnacht Switzerland.

I've just started the SIDLER family research and do not have much at this time. I have some feelers out to some other family members.
Do you know Frank's parents?

My husband's mother gave us some papers when she moved, and as a result, I am in possession of a family tree.

A Joseph Carl Alois Sidler b. 1768 m. a Maria Josef Ulrich in 1811. They had the following children:

Oswald Alois Sidler b 1812 (no info on his desc.)
Josef Blasius Sidler b. 1814 (some info)
Maria Anna Josefa Sidler b. 1816 (no info on her desc.)
Marie Anna Susanna Sidler b. 1818 (no info on her desc.)
Clemens Josef Burhart Sidler .b 1820 (no info)
Franz Xavier Alois Sidler b. 1822 (no info)
Elizabeth b. 1825 (no info)
Alois Josef b. 1828 (no info)
Josefa Katharina b. 1835 (some info).

It is my understanding that they were from Kussnacht so your Frank could be one of the sons' sons. The tree goes back further.

Some of Joseph's femail descendents came to the US.

Maureen

I have a Josephine (or Josepha) SIDLER, born 29 Feb 1868, Kussnacht, Schwyz, Switzerland. Parents were Frank (or Franz) Dominic and Catherine Barbara MARTY.

Josephine SIDLER married Frank FLEISCHMANN 22 Nov 1894, Kussnacht Am Rigi, Schwyz, Switzerland. (Although one family story has them getting married in Minnesota. Still researching to see which is correct.)

She died 4 Sept 1934, Pierce County, Washington.

My two-fold purpose here is (1) to find out more about the SIDLER family in Switzerland and (2) to see if any of them emigrated to the United States.

Through the message board we have made contact with our Sidler side. They came from Austria and considered themselves Polish. They were first in NYC. The name Sidler is found mostly in Switzerland and Austria so there may be no real connection. I have been told thename of the town was something like Kolumea Austria. They arrived in NYC in 1900.

She has since deceased, but there are some family members about. She lived in the Bronx and had three sons. If this sounds slightly familiar feel free to e-mail me.
Good Luck,
Suzanne

Hi Barbara, My husband's grandfather was a Sidler. He came from Austria and settled in So. California. He did live in Redlands, CA. He had relatives in the LA area, but we don't know much about them. He and his brother Joseph were in the tailoring business here and in San Jose. I'm sure we are talking about the same family. We've lived in this area for over 60 years and we are not aware of any other Sidler's in this general area. We currently live about 15 miles from Redlands. I think we are dealing with a spelling change for Sidler, we believe Ellis Island changed it from Seidler. His first name was Max and we believe he had a brouther Joseph, and a sister named Minnie.
