Re: trying to find meaning of last name

Hello, most of my family is actually from mexico near the border with texas.
My dad never mention his grandfather but i know his dad lived in Houston for quite sometime. With my grandfather and his 5 sons (if not more) all have that same last name, kinda rare i would say. But im pretty sure it was modified or somehow related to the "Fuentes, de la fuente, C. Fuentes" last names. Im not sure how far back but i know for sure that the fuentes and the de la fuentes come from spain, altho my dad's family is dark and more mexican than spanish, most of the de la fuentes i have met tend to be spanish and light complected.
Just some extra facts, hope to help.

Marcelino Bautista Sifuentes - Notable Papel Picado Artist

Marcelino was born in Zacatecas, Zacatecas, Mexico and came to the United States as a young child. In the 60’s the civil rights movement was in full swing. As a child Marcelino was told that if he spoke Spanish he was stupid, for many years Marcelino avoided speaking Spanish and never discussed anything about Mexican tradition. It was as times changed and he matured that he realized how proud he is to be of Mexican descent. It is his love of History and his culture that has driven him to preserve the past. As Marcelino is often heard saying we all contribute to History and no ones voice should be silenced. It is with this belief that he strives to preserve all forms of art, history and culture no matter how unpopular it maybe.

As a family organization we are pleased to assist the Master Paper Cutter in the promotion of papel picado as a means of preserving both the art form and culture from which it is derived. The preservation of culture is important it is what makes us all unique and learning about different cultures gives us all a better understanding of the world around us. As Marcelino’'s father often told his children, “no te olvides de donde vienes, ni a donde vas” (don’t forget your origins or where you’'re headed).

It is our goal to preserve and promote the art of papel picado while helping to preserve culture and community. It is our belief that through education we will all grow into a more productive society.

For more information about our my father and our family organization you can visit us at www.mypapelpicado.com.

Hi my name is Noah Sifuentes. I live in Utah, and I have some information on our last name, not much but I hope it helps. Most people will tell you that our last name is spelled wrong it should be Ci Fuentes or Cifuentes and comes from Spain. It changed when we came to the united states and to keep the pronunciation of the name they changed it from cifuentes which if you pronounced it wouldnt sound right so they changed it to "si" fuentes. The name also comes from an area of central spain that has a lot of natural springs. Fuente gives reference to a spring or source of water. Anyway hope some of the info helps.

What I recall from my folks was the last name is usually translated as "Yes-Spring", but it is actually meant to stand for "By the spring" in reference to the location of the town.

The original meaning may have been lost due to the change/conversion in medival Spanish (Ladino)
