Looking for information on the James and Mary Silas family. They lived in Richland Parish, La and had 5 children: Caroline, Mary, Emily, Frank and Thomas. Mary migrated to Bolivar county, Ms with her son, Frank in the early 1900's. Very little information on the whereabouts on Mary, Emily, Caroline and Thomas. Caroline Silas married Ed Valentine in November 1886. Frank Silas married Sophia Briggs. Emily Silas married Henry Dickson (unsure about spelling). Thomas Silas married Lula ?. The only family line I have information on is for Frank Silas.

John Guy and Ellender Francina (Silas) Barr, Barbour Co., AL
Hi Silas Family!

I'm working on my 2nd Great Grandparents, my fathers maternal grandparents.

John Guy Barr was b. probably in VA in 1825. He may have gone by the name Guy Barr.

He married Ellender Francina Silas on Dec. 12, 1857. She was found on the census in the family of George W. Hollingsworth. Her possibly adoptive or step brother James Hollis Hollingsworth, Sr. was born in NC but died in Mt. Andrew, Barbour Co., Sep 18, 1900 indicating that her family at least lived there for a time. Francina Silas was b. Feb. 3, 1838 in Barbour County, AL. On the 1900 Census her DOB is Nov. 1837.

John was 5'5", dark complected with auburn hair and grey eyes (per Civil War documents). In 1850 and 1860 he was listed on the census in Barbour, Co.

The Children of John Guy and Ellen Francina Barr were (as far as we know, w/some census mistakes):

James F. Barr b. ~1854 in Mt. Andrew, Barbour Co., AL

Georgia A.B. Barr M b. ~1859 " " " " " (One of these 2 is a transcription error)

Georgia A. D. Barr F b. ~1859 " " " " "

Alonzo (Trans. error: Alonza) B. Barr M. b. 1861 " " " " " d. Apr 14, 1943 Barbour, AL

Edward D. Barr b. 1863 " " " " "

Luther O. Barr b. Oct. 1864 " " " " " d. 1929 Barbour, AL

Lula Jane Barr b. 1867 " " " " " d. Jan 1958 Jacksonville, Duval, FL

Anna Josephine Barr b. 1869 " " " " "

Notes: Civil War records state that he was enlisted as John G. Barr, Pvt. Co. H 61st Reg't, AL. He enlisted July 25th 1863 in Tuskeegee and was last paid from that Reg't on Oct. 31, 1863.

He was admitted to General Hospital # 9 in Richmond, VA on Apr 16 1864 then Chimborazo Hospital #2 Richmond, VA On Apr. 17, 1864, transferred to Farmville, VA. Disease listed was dyspepsia.

He apparently stayed on at the hospital as he was listed afterward on "list of white attendants on duty in second division." His name also appears on a receipt roll for "clothing" on May 10, 1864 He must have returned from Farmville at some point.

On Apr. 3, 1865 Richmond fell and he was captured, again a patient in the hospital and still suffering from "dyspepsia," probably ulcers due to the chronic nature of the illness. He was turned over to the Provost Marshall Apr. 19, 1865 at Libby Prison in Richmond then transferred on Apr. 23 to Newport News, VA. He was released at Newport News on June 14, 1865 and made his way home.

John Guy Barr died in 1868, after Anna was conceived. The only J.G. Barr I could find is buried in Pike Co., in the Richland Baptist Church Cemetery. The dates partially match, DOB on the gravestone is May 12, 1813, but the death date is right on (Oct. 16, 1868). A relative by marriage, Nancy (an aunt?) lived in Pike, so there's a firm connection with that area.

Ellender (Ellen) is found next 0n the 1870 census living in Monticello, Pike, AL with Nancy Barr (unk relative by marriage I think) b. in VA. making the VA to AL connection, Alonzo, Eddie, Luther, Lula, and (Anna) Josephine (age 2), as well as another boy, Thomas Barr (age 16), perhaps Nancy's son.

She is next found in 1880 living as a widow, her name on the census F. Ellender Barr, in Barbour Co., AL. with Alonzo, Edward, Luther, Lula, and Anna (Josephine).

In 1900 she is listed as Ellendor, head of household, in Barbour, Co living with 35 yr old son Luther. The census states that she had 7 children, 5 living. Luther is listed as a "merchant." She owns the home, a farm and Luther rents from her.

As I write, I'm discovering even more . . . In 1910 she is called Ellenda Barr on the census, visiting the J.H. Hollingworth family in Mt. Andrew. At 72 perhaps she was in ill health. J. H. Hollingworth's mother Amanda, age 69 is also there. George W. Hollingsworth (sic) had a daughter named Abbie! (Remembering that she was raised by a Holling(s)worth family.)

So, does anyone recognize this family? Do we know of any Silas families in Barbour Co.? I'm as interested in him as I am her! It would be great to trace both families!

Thanks!!
Tracey Miller Edwards

Silas Reunion
My dad, Willie Silas, died in 1999. Dad was born in Poplarville, Mississippi. He told me of at least four brothers he had--Clifton, Monroe, Henry and George. There were other brothers that I cannot recall. The last reunion he attended was in June 1996. I recently located a family reunion t-shirt from this date that listed some names that included George Silas, Henrietta Silas, Bud Silas, and Henry Silas, with large prints that includes Silas, Pittman and Harry. If there are members of the Silas family who can relate to this information, I would love to hear from you.

I am looking for information on James & Mary Silas from Rayville, Richland Parish, Louisiana. Rayville is near Monroe, Louisiana. They had at least 5 children: Thomas, Frank, Emily, Caroline and Mary. I have information on all children's spouses except Mary. In my research, all family lines end with the marriage of the children except Frank Silas. Any information available would be most helpful.

Jensen Beach area Silas'

Elbert James Silas Sr. (his children) & my grandfather’s half brother:

Elbert James Silas Jr.
Patrick
Michael
Doris
Debbie
Septimus Samuel Silas (named after my grandfather)

I was told that the family owned property in Jensen Beach, FL. They also come from a family of folks and their children down the line from a military background. The Silas’ are rich in music – either they sing or play instruments. Plus, they are spiritual and stay close to their church roots.

My grandfather was from GA then moved to Kissimee Florida and lived in the Florida area for awhile. After joining the military he'd travel to Mississippi (where my father was born - Greenville,MS)and then settle in Los Angeles where he died in June 1974. He is buried at the Veteran's Memorial Cemetary in Los Angeles. I found out that he married a fourth time in the late 60's to someone named Maria that had two children (girls) from a previous relationship. My aunt Brenda's mother's name was Rachel and she grew up visiting my grandfather.

*Note: What I have found is that the older generation kept a lot of family secrets. Regardless of race, wealth or not and location they had a lot of secrets. The unfortunate thing is that once you do these searches and after being somewhat successful in located a few family members. Everyone isn't receptive and unfortunately will hold you accountable for the poor actions of your ancestors. It's not my fault and like I told one person - "I am not taking anything away from you but added to you by introducting myself as your family." Can we all just get along people?

I have found at least 25 new family members on facebook and thank goodness they are receptive while we all get to know one another. One guy told it to me this way - "we are all related and if we aren't then biological doesnt matter but in the eyes of Jesus, we are all brothers and sisters, hello sister." This is the new generation where all of us really want and need acceptance.

-Peace

Ruby Silas/Billie Silas/Cora Silas information

Tis email was sent to me awhile ago but I didn't add it to this message board.

Here goes:

Aunt Ruby (the great aunt that you look like) did live in New Jersey. She was an excellent chef and made a lot of money. Sadly, she never had any children. I don't know of a great Aunt Cora or a great Uncle Elbert. They may not have been Ada Sweet's (grandaddy Septimus's mother) children. There was another great aunt by the name of Billie (whom they used to call "Bill"). Grandaddy Septimus was, indeed, the oldest of his immediate family. Great-grandmother Ada only had one son. Perhaps these are Thomas Silas's children (Grandaddy Septimus's father).
His name is also Charles and he would love to hear from either of you. He began working on the family tree many years ago and loves meeting family. I live in Detroit and dad lives near Pittsburgh. He will have to send them by mail, which I'm sure he will be glad to do.

So, my young cousin, what are you doing with your life? You in school, work, what?

Hi Ciara (cuz)

First, my name is Charles. I am the grandson of Eliza and Noah. I actually live with my grandmother (I called her mommo) till she died in 1967. My dad has some pics. In fact, he just sent some to our cousin Gerry Ellis in New Orleans.

I did not know Ben Sallis, but I grew up hearing the name Hattie B. I also grew up knowing our Uncle Sam Sallis and his children. He was a Pastor/Bishop who planted churches in PA, OH, and MS.

You are so right that our fam is scattered. I just met Gerry today by phone. She is going to a family gathering next month in MS. We are having one in Detroit next week which will be the descendants of Eliza and Noah. Wouldn't it be something if we could pull all of these strands back together. There must be close to 1000 of us who are direct descendants of Richard and Rannie Sallis. I know that they had at least 12 children. My grand mother Eliza had 8 and each of her children has at least great great grands, some more. At this point, only two of her children remain, my father and Uncle Gill.

Let's talk sometime soon. My number is 248 408 6117

My email is ceclark77@gmail.com

Look forward to hearing from you

Blessings

My name is Ciara. Eliza was my great great aunt. Her brother, Ben, was my great great grandfather. Ben's son, Albert Sallis, was my great grandfather. My grandmother is Hattie B Sallis. Does anyone have pictures of Eliza and Noah and their parents and/or siblings? I've been trying to find some but nobody seems to have any. Did you know about Ben Sallis' side of the family? Our family is pretty scattered.

Eliza and Noah are my grandparents. They had 8 children, two of whom still live. My father, Charles, is the youngest and still alive. I have found grandmother Eliza's parents and siblings in census records and confirmed them with my dad.

I would love to make contact with you.

I am looking for my ggg grandfather's grandchildren who lived with him in 1910. My ggg grandfather is Richard Sallis but he is listed as Richard Silas in 1910. He lived in Beat 2, Holmes, Mississippi at the time. On the census, there are 4 grandchildren listed: Hattie Silas, Edward Silas, T Booker Silas, and Jessie Silas. I'm assuming they are supposed to Sallis instead of Silas. I'm trying to locate their parents and find out what happened to them.

Re: Mena Silas

Hi Dene,
I tried to email you on your private address (but it didnt seem to work) about the musical score that Mena Silas wrote for my father. It is called The William Thomas March and I have the original hand written sheet music. This has just been unearthed and sent to me by my brother hence I am trying to find out something about the composer and my father’s connection with Mena and why such a lovely piece would be written especially for him. We are hoping that a relative who plays in a military band can get them to play it so that we can get a recording and hear it as it was meant to be played. A pianist has played it for us and it sounded wonderful. He was very impressed by the quality of the composition.
As for when and where my father knew Mena I have no idea. My father was born in Cheshire, England in 1909 went into the merchant navy in about 1926 and travelled all over the world for about the next 10 years or so, married my mother in 1937 and settled down in Cheshire. They moved to Wiltshire, England in about 1945 and then moved to Hertfordshire in 1954 where he was a maintenance man for an exclusive private school for young ladies called Downham. It was in 1962/3/4 that he moved to South Kensington in London and 1970 when he moved to Knightsbridge where he was a security man in the Natural History museum and my Mum was housekeeper for the Jardine and Tennant families in Knightbridge. In 1976 he retired and went to live in Western Australia where he died in 1983.
I would be very grateful if you could narrow down where they might have encountered each other. Was Mena in the habit of writing music for any casual acquaintance or would it have to have been for someone special do you know?
I am very interested in finding out more about Mena’s background and career and would be most grateful if you could help me.
Of course I would be more than happy to send you a copy of the music if you are interested and hopefully the recording when and if we get it.
I look forward to hearing from you
Kind Regards
Irene
I have been doing some research on Mena Silas and can probably send you some info. I have information from about 1886 to 1960's and it is quite involved. Could you be a little more specific regarding time frames and/or countries? Feel free to contact me directly if you like at dhilsen@san.rr.com.
hello. i'm aware of many mulattos as they called mixed people back then, are in my family. they are from sallis, ms which is of course named after the sallis family. it's easy yet complicated to find my ansestors. they made it a habit of using the same names over and over again throughout the generations and played with names by dropping a leter here or adding a letter there.

i know they come from ireland and england (according to my grandmother, born in 1922) she had a caucasion father named charles or clark and her mother was named alma. the list of names over the generations are: ressie (tressie, lessie, essie..., charles, milton, columbus, milton, melton, alma, and so on)

i also know that my great granmother was allowed to stay with her father, so on and so forth. i'm only 33 but there are bits and pieces i'm aware of. my picture is a pic of my mother. they are all.......mixed and she's like to know more about the sallis family. she's actually living in greenville mississippi, not far away.

i'm also aware of a mary elisabeth. i've found tons of familiar names but i'm really not getting anywhere.
