So grateful to hear from you. We've hit a bit of a brick wall. Will get my files to hand and be in touch. What we have is an ancestor, John Silcocks, whose father and grandfathers were Edward Silcocks - cottage weavers - and for some reason John ended up in Wales in 1831 census and never went back.. We would love to know when and why he went from Trowbridge and more about the family there... more... have a wonderful Christmas.

My mother didn't have much information about him other than he would be in his low to mid 60's and they were living in Virginia Beach at the time I was conceived in 1976.I know this is a long shot but with so little information to go on; I figured I would try anything at this point. I do have a picture of him as well. Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I am searching for the marriage and origin of a John and Mary Silcox who resided in Camerton, Someset Co., England when their son James was born in 1807. They also had a daughter, Harriet. There are a large number of Silcocks families documented as living in the neighboring Parish of Dunkerton, but I cannot locate a record for the marriage of a John and Betty in the appropriate time frame or for the birth of a John during the 1780 period.
Hi Terry,

Since you seem to know a lot about Silcox genealogy in your part of the country, I am wondering if you have ever run into a John and Betty Silcocks? They first show up in Camerton Parish (south of Bath) having a son named James in 1807. Then came a daughter Harriet in 1814. A possible brother, named Lewis, and his wife Betty (Elizabeth) appear having children in the same time frame (1809-1813). Unfortunately, I can't trace them back prior to 1807 when James is born. James, who lived in the coal mining area of Northern Monmouthshire in the 1840-50 era, had children there including a son, Lewis, born in 1837.

Thanks for any help you can provide. I've been trying to trace this line back beyond 1807 for some 40 years including visits to the Taunton Register's office years ago.

Dave Silcox
404 E.
Dana,

I am fairly confident that I have your John S* of 1813.

He and 9 of is siblings were all members of the Trowbridge Back Street, Baptist Church.
As you may know members of the church are not baptised until they are adults, BUT the church register, which is in the Wilts Record Office does usually record the date of birth of the chldren of members.

So we have John bn 21 Aug 1812.

His brothers include Andrew, JAmes, Edward, Solomon & Lazarus

Their Parents were Edward and Mary SLADE of Studley a suburb of Trowbridge.

Mary wife of Edward was buried Feb 1840 age 44y.

Edward might have been the son of Edward and Ann WOOD, but his baptism disagrees by a couple of years with his age at death (79y) and E & AW had three children of which two are recrded as being buried, "child of Edward" and "Child of Ann" after Edward senior had died.
I need to do some more checking of my records to be more confident.
I will look to see what more I can fill in before sending you more details, but it may take a few weeks, as I have several families and other matters to sort out.

Regards
Terry

How wonderful !!!!!!

We have wandered around Wiltshire Census for months!!!!!!! As you say - the Silcoxes don't make it any easier by continuing to use the same names over and over - my husband's Dad was Benjamin Howard Silcox and all the family called him John all his life. He named his eldest son David but called him John and my husband Andrew but called him James!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is what I know for certain:

My husband's grandfather was James Silcox born 1880 in Llangattock
He married Eunice Oakley, birth registered December 1884, Breconshire

James's father's name was Andrew Silcox born 1849/51 (can't get census to agree) in Llangattock
James's mother's name was Rachel (we don't know her maiden name) but we have her born about 1855 in Ebbw Vale.

We know all this is on the right track because Andrew's father and grandfather were living in Ebbw Vale before his Dad went into the RAF.

We then have John Silcox (changes farther back in census to Silcocks) born about 1813 in Trowbridge, Wiltshire
marrying Elizabeth (we don't know maiden name) 1846 in Crickhowell
and the later census showing children:
Andrew (OURS)
Ann
Elizabeth
Sarah and
William (ALTHOUGH - I'm not certain that this William is not a lodger....)

That is all we know and we would LOVE to know more - thank you SO muich
Dana and Andrew
--
Dana Silcox

Dana,

What dates have you for your John Silcox from Trowbridge.

John was I think one of the most popular first names in the 170o0-1900 period, so there are very many of them.

I have extensively collected data on the SILCOX and variants in Wiltshire and Somerset, including extracting parish records from Wiltshire & Somerset Record Offices and information from transcripts by Somerset & Wiltshire FH societies. I have also constructed a number of trees as well as my own which goes back to the early 17XXs in nearby Road (now renamed Rode)

Alway willingto exchange information.

I certainly have a tree for Lazarus SILCOCKS,(bap: 2 Aug 1821) shown in one UK census as Lascar. He was son of Edward SILCOCKS and Mary SLADE.

I have many census extracts, they just need to be assimilated into the trees.

I havebeen researching since 1994, but some years ago my trees were uplaoded to one of the commercial sites. Unfortunately, experience has shown that these were not always "correct" due to my lack of experience and knowledge at that time. Further it has proved impossible to remove them, as I have changed ISP since.

Having just recently rejoined Ancestry I will try to get them removed and corrected. I often get my incorrect versions quoted back to me as being the real version!!
That is very embarassing.

Terry Silcock
NW London , UK

To contact me directly, please E-mail me at
Scotts@one-name.org
Looking for any relatives of the Silcox family of Bitton, Gloucestershire. My great great grandfather was born Thomas Silcox. I believe his parents were Joseph Silcox and Anne Lewis. Thomas was born May 8, 1862. Last place he lived in England was Yorkshire before he immigrated to US. He was a coal miner in England and a coal miner all his life in the US. He settled in Curtisville, Allegheny County, PA and is buried in Tarentum. Any information would be appreciated.

Nil Silcox married Elizabeth Betsey Ann Wheeler 1855 Bath Co, KY

Betsey Ann WHeeler had a child Mary Isabel Wheeler in 1852 in Bath Co, KY. The child was born out of wedlock. In the 1870 census she is found with her mother new stepfather with the surname of Silcox. She is the presumed child of her mother's first marriage. The first name might be Uel or Ewell. There is an older Ewell Silcox living in Bath Co, KY, but he is not the one she married as he was married to the same person his age in 1850 and 1860 with two daughters born in the 1830s. Presumably the Silcox that got married in 1855 was the son of this man. Cannot find Betsey or Mary Isabel in the 1860 census. Does anyone know who this man is and if he is related to the Ewell Silcox of Bath Co, KY? Is Mary Isabel his daughter?

Hi,
I'm John Nelson, and am on the Clay County Florida Historical Commission. I would very much like to know if you have a Silcox family tree, family history or other historical accounts or 19th century records. We are trying to index the materials available for our county's pioneer families, of which, Silcox is a very important one.

A reply to johnenelson@live.com would be appreciated.
Thank You
John Nelson
