Fr Patrick Silke, Portland, Maine

Does anyone have a connection with a priest Fr. Patrick Silke (born about 1876). His father's name was John. Not sure if he was born in Ireland or the US. He served as a priest in Houlton, Aroostook and then in St. Dominics, Portland, Maine.

His housekeeper was Mary King and on one of her immigration records it states that he was her cousin. Anyone know of a King/Silke connection?

Hi Ray,
I am going to go thru my information and I am going to see about getting a copy of that nice reunion picture I have. The only thing about your dad is he turned his head as the picture was being snapped! Addie (Dooley) looks real nice in the picture. My mom (born in 1929 also) remembers her. I will call you soon to talk. I think you are in Long Island, my mother asked what city you are in. Also, I am about to turn 47 but have older brothers and sisters, I was wondering how old you are.
Thanks,
Kerry

Kerry,

This is exciting information. I remember visiting my grandmothers brother; Uncle Tommy down in NJ when I was young but lost touch with the Millet and Hall sides of my family. I know that I am named after my "Great' Uncle Raymond who as you probably know passed away when he was young. I was very close to my Aunt Adeline who married Mike Dooley but after Mike passed away moved to Florida with my Grandfather and Grandmother until their deaths. Aunt Alice Married twice and had 3 children; Betty Anne, George and Elaine.

I hope this email finds you well and thanks for the information.

Regards,
Ray
631-406-3268
ray.silk@verizon.net

Hi Ray,
Yes I would love to correspond. Libby's mother was Adeline Hall who married Thomas Millet and I am related through the Hall's, specifically to Adeline Hall's sister Elizabeth. Please email me at gemoftheyear@aol.com
I live in New Jersey, by the way. I would be glad to swap any information or photos. In the reunion picture from 1930 is your dad sitting in Libby's lap, next to Artie, also your great grandparents Adeline & Thomas Millet as well as Raymond, Tommy and there are some girls in the picture who are not named but I would think Alice and Addie are among them. A relative typed up the names of the people in the picture years later and unfortunately he could not identify some of them. Anyway, I look forward to hearing from you further.
Kerry

Kerry,

Hi, I am real new to Ancestry.com and am muddling along. Actually my Dad Artie was born in 1929 and my Grandfather was born in 1901. His friends called him "Otts" don't know why. My grandmother, Libby, was a Millet and was born in 1902 so I guess she is related to you....I am trying to figure everything out. They both moved to Florida and passed away in the 80's. My Grandmother had a sister Adeline Millet who I was very close with, Raymond Millet, Alice Millet and Uncle Tommy.

I would love to stay in touch and correspond. I don't have many of the photos you are talking about but I am going to look through my things a bit more. I am trying to figure this all out. Thanks.

Hi Ray,
So your grandfather was born in 1929 (same as my mother who stems from the Hall's). The reunion picture I have has Art and Libby with your dad sitting on her lap. It's from July 4 1930 and I also have a newspaper clipping of Addie and Tom Millett's 50th anniversary that my aunt gave to me in the past. Maybe you have these. Would love to correspond with you more.
Kerry

Seeking more information on my great grandmother REBECCA SILK (b. 09 May 1904-d. November 1968). Silk was born in Poland with the original name RIVKA SHELCO.

Rebecca married my great grandfather Abraham ROTH, originally named Avraham RUD (b. 15 April 1904-d.19 January 1945). They had two children, Norman ROTH (b. 14 October 1929-d. 20 January 2006) and Cecile Roth FRYEFIELD (b. 25 April 1935-d. 13 November 1999).

According to the 1910 Census in Fall River Ward 3, Bristol, Massachusetts, Rebecca's family name was spelled SILIK. They immigrated to the United States from Russia in 1907. She is the daughter of Nathan and Jennie SILIK, married approximately in 1885. On the census, Nathan is listed as a Yiddish teacher. She was 6 years old and the youngest of nine children at the time. Siblings are Hattie, Jacob, Sadie, Sarah, Bertha, Samuel, Sophie, and Molly.

Rebecca is buried in Fall River, MA. Any information you have on Rebecca's immigration to the United States, parents, and ancestry would be greatly appreciated.

Jamie Liner
jamie.liner@uconn.edu
Researching: Silk, Shelco, Roth, Rud, Fryefield, Packer
Re: Silk name history

2nd October 2009

To all friends who came Barrow way on 12th/13th September 2009, greetings, and a reminder why. Special thanks to Mary T., Siobhan and all the Doyles.

THE SILKES

Their origin is in East Clare, one of the families of the Dál Cais, of whom the O’Briens were the leading family, the MacNamaras being next prominent. Brian Boru (d. 1014), High King, has a claim to being Ireland’s greatest man ever. Our Silke family stems from Maircin (10th c.) son of Nárgal, the ancestral home being Labbasheeda. They are found as churchmen and lawyers in and around Killaloe diocese. The name Ballysheedy is found in Cos Kerry (nr Tralee), Tipperary, Limerick and Galway; testifying to land grants made to prominent Silkes. A Cairpre Ua Síoda d. 1097 was chief justice of the High King Muirchertach O’Brien.

Bishop Felemy Ó Síoda of Raphoe (c1132-c1152) was evidently a reformer, brought from the south by St. Malachy. Kings Conor O’Brien of Thomond and Cormac MacCarthy of Desmond were great patrons of this reform.

The Silkes were probably established in Co. Carlow under the aegis of the O’Brien High Kings, Turlough and his son Muirchertach (d. 1114), or perhaps in the reigns of Donal Mór (d. 1194) and his son Muirchertach. A Deed of 1781 mentions the placename Funshoge Muraghantida (the Ash-grove of Murchadh an tSíoda), near Old Leighlin (due W. of Leighlinbridge). How far back in the Middle Ages does this placename go? Murrough was evidently a man of note. At Dinn Righ, Ballyknockan townland, was the sole crossing of the Barrow, which connected the Dublin government with W. Leinster and Munster.

Were Bp. William Silke of Meath (d. 1450) and Margaret Silke, Abbess of Odder, whose abbey was expropriated by Henry VIII in 1539, of the Carlow Silkes? At any rate, the family is well established in Co. Carlow in the 18th c. In the barony of Uí Dróna (Idrone) and in Carlow town. Margaret Silke (d. 1832) and her husband James Maher of Donore in Muinebheag parish were parents of Anne (Mother Columba OP) who founded Cabra Hospital in 1819. She was a first cousin of the famous Fr. James Maher, PP of Leighlinbridge (1827-30), then of Paulstown (1830-2), finally of Graiguecullen (1841-74). His sister, Mary, was mother of Cardinal Cullen (1803-78), whose father Hugh came from Craan, Leighlin. Card. P.F. Moran of Leighlinbridge, son of Patrick Moran and Alicia, half-sister of Cardl. Cullen, was also grandnephew of Fr. James Maher and became Archbishop of Sydney (d. 1911). Was Margaret (d. 1832) the sister of Henry (I), husband of Joan?

A Deed of 1811 says that Michael and James Silke and James’s wife, Anne, of Rathellin (just S. of Leighlinbridge) sold their farm of 39 Plantation acres to Thomas Roche of Leighlinbridge for £63. Silke’s weir on this farm is where at Rathellin the River Madlin flows into the Barrow. Presumably this family are buried at nearby Dunleckney. Note that J.J.’s father was Michael and his brother was James, suggesting a close link with the Rathellin Silkes. Ballyknockan, three-quarters of a mile south of Leighlinbridge, Dunleckney and Rathellin are all near one another. At Ballyknockan Ione (Joan), wife of Henry (I), was buried. She d. 1766, aged 66.

Henry and Joan probably lived in Seskin. Their son Henry (II) was scourged from Carlow to Leighlinbridge in 1798, for refusing to inform. Other young men were flogged, some, including Hugh Cullen, uncle of the later cardinal, were executed. This Henry’s son, also Henry (III), 1808-81, farmed at Seskin Lower. We saw Silke’s Field, 100 yards from Seskin Cross, and a piece of wall, part of Silke’s house. He married Mary Carroll of Courleigh in 1853, and presumably moved to Courleigh, at a low point in fortune. He died in the Workhouse, Carlow; his wife Mary died in the Workhouse, New Ross, in 1887. Their son Michael, now of Courleigh, married Bridget Tobin in 1882. Their children were Henry (IV) who died in infancy; John Joseph b. 1884; Mary Bridget b. 1886; James b. 1889; Anastasia b. 1892 (who married locally in Kellymount); Michael; and Henry (V) b. 1899. All attended the Brigidine National School at Bornafea just north of Courleigh. So the family spread out to Creeslough, Muinebheag, Borris, Ballygar, then to Cork, Dublin, London, etc. etc.

THE DOYLES

A notable family (Dubh-ghall) in south east Leinster, of Norse origin. A bishop of Kildare and Leighlin (which takes in Co. Carlow and parts of Cos. Kilkenny, Kildare, Wicklow and Wexford) was James Doyle (‘JKL’), 1786-1834, a great Catholic champion. Fr. Willie S.J. (killed 1917) and Arthur Conan (whose grandfather was from Dublin) are other famous Doyles.

Mary Doyle of Courleigh married James (‘Jockey’) Doyle of Muinebheag, and so began a famous dynasty!

N.B. St. Lazerian (Molaise) d. 639 is the famous patron of Leighlin. He is also patron of Lamlash Bay (Molaise>Lamlash) on the island of Arran. Donald Mackelvie of Lamlash raised Arran Pilot and Arran Banner, which J.J. Silke made famous.

N.B. Courleigh may derive from Cuar Laoigh (‘the rounded valley of the calf’) or, perhaps less likely, Cumar (‘ravine’, ‘valley’, or ‘confluence’) Laoigh. Cumar na dtrí nUise = the confluence of the Barrow, Nore and Suir.

The house she and my Great Grandfather built went up in flames in July 2009 ( it was arson) my dad used to live there, the police still have not caught who did it. I don't have any photos of the silks and I would really love some as I have done the family tree on the information I do have. Maria ( aged sixteen) went to new york with her brother Edward ( the one you have) from Ireland then came here.
Lesley

Dear Lesley. I live in Sydney Australia but was brought up in Rockhampton. My Great-Gransfather on my mothers-side was an Edward Silk who I believe was married to Annie Doyle a hotelier from the same part of Ireland. The dates for his passing through Rockhampton are approximately correct, but I have no information of his ever having been in the US, but them I wouldn't have. I am checking with my cousin Helen Koch (nee Hamilton)who is a treasure trove of information. One of the Silk girls married James Hamilton who was one of the few males in the large family of David Hamilton and his wife Elizabeth Fraser of Inverness. They came directly to Central Queensland in the late 1860 but I have not been able to discover the name of the ship upon which they travelled. The Silks were wool growers in CQ, having fallen on their feet due to a drought.
Reg Boyle.

Perhaps someone here can help me. I'm researching my paternal grandmother's line and looking for any info on James F Silk. Through research that I've gathered, it appears he was born in Ireland around 1827, although the exact place or date is unknown, and married a woman named Catherine, b. 1834 in Ireland. They emigrated to New York in 1848 and settled first in Baltimore, Maryland in 1850 and then in Livingston Co., Illinois in 1880; among there seven children were Patrick H, James and John C. Several different branches of the Silk line have been discussed on this post, and I'm not sure where mine ties in, but any help would be greatly appreciated (we have hardly any info on the Silks)

I am seeking information on Peter Silk of Manhattan New York
He was born to Michael Silk and Bridget Murphy in Galway Ireland. Some family trees online post his birth date as July 15 1875 but hie WWI draft card gives his birth as Nov 1880. He emigrated to New York about 1900 (according to the 1910 New York census) and married Kate Nestor on Feb 15 1903. They had 5 children : Marion 26 Feb 1904, Catherine 4 Sept 1905, Thomas V. 25 Oct. 1915, Eileen 1918, and Eleanor "Ellie" 11 Dec. 1919. I believe he died about 17 Mar. 1932. According to the 1910 and 1920 Censuses he was a blacksmith and horse shoer. If you have any information about him and especially about his parents please contact me. Thank You

I have some corrections for your information. Caroline Bertucci and Hubert Silk had a daughter named Muriel. It's a long story but Muriel was sent to England to live with her grandparents Stephen and Hannah Silk. They raised her. She married and Irishman named O'Dea (sp?) and moved to Dublin. She had a daughter named Mary Hayden (sp?) who I spoke with recently. I can give you more details if you like.
-Stephanie

It is possible. My great, great grandfather (Peter Lawrence) was the Silk who came to the US from Liverpool. His father John is who we think went from Galway to Liverpool. Believe that Peter was born in Ireland. I don't know if Peter had siblings, but your Catherine would have been around the same age group as Peter, who named his daughter Delia Catherine.

Hey Dave

In fact, I believe this is the same James Silk. Your great grandfather's brother, Patrick H Silk, was my Great Great Grandfather, who had a son named Leo James Silk, who in turn had my grandmother Sharon Silk.

While I too have no idea where in Ireland James was born, I do have him arriving in NY on 28 Aug 1848 sailing on the Rob Roy. Unfortunately I have no death date for him, but an Ancestry member left a comment on my tree saying at least how he died.

Becci Bignell Thomas, from The Knight Museum and Sandhills Center in Alliance, NE, says that he died in a blizzard in Box Butte County, Nebraska and was buried in a local Calvary Catholic cemetery. His wife, Catherine, survived him until 1909 and was buried with him.

Not sure if we are talking about the same James Silk but most lilekly.
He would be my great, great grandfather.

The one I have been searching was born 1827 in Ireland (not sure exact location), arrived from Dublin to NY in 1848.Lived briefly in Baltimore before seetling in Livingston, ILL. He married Catharine and they had 7 kids.
One of those children James Silk (the second) would be my great grandfather. He came to Butte, Mt around 1900 and mined copper until he was injured when a cage dropped down a mine shaft around 1914. He died in 1916. His name is inscripted on a commemerative stone wall(to all the miners that died in Butte) here in Butte where I live and grew up.

Hope this helps. If you think this is the James Silk let me know. Would love some more info on him and where exactly in Ireland he is from.

Dave Silk

Butte, Mt

Karen,

Edward Silke (b 1883) immigration in 1910 is at EllisIsland.org
He was born Dunmore, co Galway, Ireland but migrated from (Wareham or Waverham? or something starting with M...) England where he resided. His sister Mrs. Palmer resided in New Rochelle. His brother John Silke resided Dunmore.
spelled Silke. Manifest image at that site.

In Ireland, Partial records of 1855 Griffith's Valuation search at
http://www.lalley.com/index.htm?griffith%27s.htm

1901 (Galway +) census search at http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com/1901census/census.shtml
There are Silke in Galway at Barony of Dunmore.
(Michael Silke's wife b. Roscommon)
There is a Thomas Silk (no e) family with sons John & Edward plus others.
Perhaps you can match up with known sibling names.

The England 1901 census does not turn up an 18 yr old Edward born in Ireland. So he migrated to England betw. 1901-1910.
http://www.1901censusonline.com/search.asp?wci=ei_search_wit...

There are no records of sailing from Ireland to England. He likely sailed from port of Sligo, Ireland.

Jan

Karen,

First social security card issued in 1936.
If his birth date is accurate, then Edward is not in the Social Security death index at familysearch.com.
He probably died in Westchester county between 1930 and 1936.

http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~nywestch/ is the Westchester county GenWeb site. Look at cemetery records and their other options.

Intermet.net is another site

Jan

Hi I am trying to find out more info on Edward Silk.

He was born in Ballinlough, Co. Roscommon, Ireland on the 16th Dec 1883. He left for New York. I have found him in the 1930 census living in New Rochelle, Westchester, New York with his wife Ella, 40 years old and son Edward W aged 12.

As far as I know they never returned to Ireland. Can anyone help me trace any of them in the US.

He had brothers and sisters also in New York. I have not traced these either yet, so I am hoping to start with him.

Thanks, Karen

Hi Kate
It's Pat here, I have had a look around on Ancestry too.Did you find the entry for Thomas Silk 1901 living in Longton Staffs? It records a Thomas Silk born Ireland living Longton Birmingham in Grosvenor Street .Head Mary Moran with daughter Winifred Moran, Bridget Casey Aunt and then lists lodgers Martin Weir ,Thomas Silk,Thomas Scolla,William Kelly. Thomas is listed as being 23 here but could be mistake and could be 28 which would make sense. They are all born in Ireland and feels like a "safe house" to me.Wonder if he was here as Thomas and at pub as John. Don't know if relevant but interesting. Pat

Hi Fred,

I was wondering if you can confirm the wife of Jonathan 1762. I have her name as Ann Keziah Coxhardy b.abt 1762.
I can't find that name anywhere else. Also do you have any pictures or stories for Eli 1801, Frederick 1827, or Frederick Eli 1861. I know my Frederick Eli sailed with the Royal Navy on a few ships. I have saved records in my ancestry.ca family tree. Do know of any living siblings of Fred Eli children Adeline or Mildred Allison? Anything on my branch would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know what to say other than I am Hubert Silk's grand daughter. I never imagined any other Silk's out there. I thought I was the last one in the family. If anyone has ANY information about the Silks, I would love to hear from you as I have very little info myself. Do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely, Stephanie Silk
Thanks Fred

I did know he had remarried and I had the names of the children. I wasn't sure if Alfred was fromthe 1st or 2nd marriage so thats nice to know. I don't have a lot of details so anything you can send would be great. Do you have any pictures of Frederick Eli & family, his parents or grand parents? Nice to meet you.
