Try www.familysearch.org. It is free and you may be able to find your family in the censuses. There are lots of Silvias. Watch out for misspellings and errors.

Carol

I came across a Manual M. Silvia while I was researching another family. I think that he may be your guy. He was born in the Azores which are islands in the middle of the Atlantic. They were settled by Portuguese. If you go to www.familysearch.org you can look him and his family up in the censuses for free. Censuses often have errors so be aware of that while you research. Many Portuguese came to New England as sailors and fishermen.

Happy hunting!

Carol

Silvia in Rhode Island

I am looking for my grandmothers family. Sadly she died in 2010 before I really wanted to trace my lineage. Her name was Eleanor Jean Silvia, born in Rhode Island about 1930. She died in craven co nc August 2010. She married Lawrence Lemoyne Ramsey sr. I dont have first names for her parents but you can say father ?? Silvia, and mother's maiden name was Corey. Corey's mother was Marie A. Cordosa (maiden name). My father told me his grandmother (cordosa) did not speak english or hardly spoke english which means she was most likely from Portugal and the others were either born here or came here early in their life. Any help would be awesome.

Hi. Your assumption was correct.Manuel Silvia & Anna(Frates)Silvia were the parents of Antoine L., who was married to Lucy Ann(McPhee). Yes, there were at least 13 children born.
They were as follows: (not necessarily in the right order of birth). ANNIE, JULIA, TONY, JACK, LAURA, LUCY, FREDERICK, MANUEL, GRACIE, WALTER, MARY, EVELYN, and GLADYS.Gladys was my grandmother, who passed away 6/12/1990. Jack passed away in 2000. There are still members of the Silvia family that reside in Cohasset. The family of Jack Silvia. His wife, Lois and their four sons and families. I hope this helps.

My boyfriend remembers these family members living in or around Fall River, Massachusetts when he was a very little boy, (over 50 years ago), so his recollections are a little fuzzy.

From what I have been able to find out, she had 3 brothers: Manuel Marshall Silvia Jr, Joseph Marshall Silvia and Francis Marshall Silvia and 2 sisters: Mary and Kate. Parents: Manuel Marshall Silvia b.1874 in Portugal d. 1945 in Falmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts and Mary Miller Silvia b.1888 Providence, Rhode Island.
If you can verify any of this or know anything about it that could help it would be very appreciated. Marion was married three times, the last being to my grandfather Emzy Oren Mervin. It has been said that his sister, Myrna married Francis Marshall. I would love to find out my family's history not only for my benefit but foe my four year old son. I don't want him not knowing like I have.
Thank you very much.

A good human source of information on the Fratus family may be Norman Fratus. He grew up and was very active in Cohasset. He was an elementary school principal in Woodstock, VT where he may still live. His dad was a mason and firefighter.
Rose fratus owned several buildings in Cohasset, including two apartment houses and a gas station (across the street from St. Anthony's Church) in the Spring Street and South Main St. area.
The Cohasset Historical Society (106 South Main Street, Cohasset, MA 02025)
Has a lot of information and a very helpful staff. A small voluntary donation would probably move researching your inquiry to the top of their busy workload.
Good luck'
Rich

Good luck
Rich

Hi April. I just found your post from 2005 on the SYLVIA message board. These sound like some of the same people I have found connected with my research. In the 1860 census from Cohasset I have the following:

Family #1589
John JOSEPH 49 Laborer b.Portugal
Mary A. PEARCEY 25 b.Portugal(his daughter?)
Frank PEARCEY 21 Mariner b.Portugal
Wreatha JOSEPH 14 b.Portugal(I think she married LEONARD)
Joseph JOSEPH 21 Mariner b.Portugal
Antone JOSEPH 12 b.Portugal

Family #1707
Manuel SYLVIA 32 Mariner b.Portugal
Mary J.orG. " 35 b.Portugal
Family #1708
John SYLVIA 34 Mariner b.Portugal
Mary A. " 33 b.Portugal
Angeline " 16 b.Portugal(this is my ancestor and I believe she marries Joseph PIERSON in 1861). I think Joseph is related to Frank PEARSEY from the family # 1589. Frank becomes PEARSON/PIERSON in later census's.

Do any of these sound familiar? I have census info. from 1860 - 1880. And also some birth and marriage records. But the names keep changing and it gets confusing. I have nothing prior to 1860.

Margaret
Silvey, Pico Island, Azores to Massachusettes and then to British Columbia, Canada.

Our family name in British Columbia was once spelled Silvia, Sylvia, and other variations.

The Silvey family of British Columbia Canada had it's foundation roots start about 1860. Joseph Silvey jumped from a whaling ship off the mouth of the Fraser River. His destination was the rich gold pannings on the banks of the Fraser River, somewhere above Fort Yale. Joseph Silvey never made his fortunes digging for gold, but he stayed in BC as a saloon keeper, hotel-store keeper and fisherman and whaler. He made his fortunes in having family and friends. He lived his years having a big family and purchasing a beautiful tree covered island, some 300 plus acres. Several generations of Silvey's later, the BC coast is still home to many hundredds and hundreds of Silvey's; fishermen, loggers and many other contributing jobs, now that fishing and logging are going into history's locker.

Some information on our Silvey branch;

Some say our Portuguese Joe Silvey was born about 1828 and others say about 1830-40. We have baptisms from the church at Calheta de Nesquim on the island of Pico (thanks to cousin Brenda Silvey). The baptisms for Joseph and his 8 siblings are from one family between the years of 1819 to 1842. The parents listed are; Joao' Jose' de Simas and his wife; Francisca Jacinta. The paternal grandparents for Joseph Silvey and his 8 siblings are; paternal grandfather (unknown) and his wife Maria do Espirito Santo, and the maternal grandparents were Antonio Silveira Quaresma Maria Jacinta. All four grandparents were of the same Parish of Calheta de Nesquim on Pico Island.

Children (Joe and his siblings) from the baptism papers, from the church at Calheta de Nesquim on Pico Island, Azores;
1. Manuel, born August 21, 1819
2. Maria, born July 24, 1822
3. Joao, born February 22, 1825
4.Jose (Joseph), born April 23, 1828
5. Francisca, born April 3, 1831
6. Antonio, born May 18, 1834
7. Rosa, born January 26, 1837
8. Domingos, born August 25, 1839
9. Joaquina, born September 12, 1842.

The church at CALHETA DE NESQUIM, Pico Island, Azores http://flickr.com/photos/hilda/2276108392/ This is from Flickr, a wonderful site to look up any image of any pl,ace you wish to see

Pico Island images from Flickr (make sure you open all); http://www.flickr.com/photos/hilda/2276108956/

Note we are posative this is our branch as "OUR" Joseph had named his children every single name listed above, right down to Joaquina and Domingo (that was my great grandfathers name, he was born in Stanley Park, Vancouver in 1874). Another reason why we think this is our ancestor and his siblings (listed above), is because we had oral history of Josephs grandfather being a Scottsman who stayed in Portugal after a war. He was a Highlander and this fits, as the baptisms all don't mention the paternal grandfather.

If you feel you have a connection to this information or the follwing information, please contact me;

1. Birthplace; Calheta de Nesquim, Pico Island, Azores, Portugal.
2. New bedford and Massachusettes ports for 1800's whalers.
3. Maybe California (something in the whaling business made him come to the Pacific)
4. Whaling off British Columbia in the 1850-60's
5. Gold panning on the Fraser River of British Columbia, about 1860's.
6. Hotel, saloon and store keeper on Burrard inlet's Granville (Gastown), now called Vancouver.
7. Homesteading in Stanley Park, on Burrard Inlet, Vancouver, BC.
8. Living on a beautiful Gulf Island; Reid Island, BC, Canada and raising his family with his wife.
9. Death of Portuguese Joe Silvey in 1902, Reid Island, British Columbia, Canada
10. Our Joseph Silvey was very illusive on his birth year. It changed from each government document to another... sometimes the dates of birth are many years apart. I feel he changed birth years often so as not to be traced, as he jumped ship around 1860 and always felt insecure about that fact.
11. Joseph Silvey had his surname spelled many different ways, according to the English language and the dominated british and Scottish people who lived on BC's coast back in the 1800's. The surname "Silvey" was a result of many changes and different spellings, but it is close to his real Portuguese surname.
12.Portuguese Joe Silvey (our BC ancestor) recieved the name "Portuguese Joe", when three or 4 other Portuguese Joe's appeared on the BC coast. So to make himself different he too the name "Portuguese Joe #1", while all others fell into the number they took (each took a number to differentiate themselves from one another).

The following are some links to OUR Portuguese Joe Silvey on British Columbia, Canada's west coast. In the 1800's one could be lost on this coast, very easily... that fact is still prevelant today. So Joe Silvey could make a living but be hidden from civilization quite easy.

Please take some time and open up the following links. The first two links are on books about our Joseph Silvey and the following two links are ones I made on yahoo, some years ago;

http://www.harbourpublishing.com/title/TheRemarkableAdventur...
POW/MIA Korean War, SILVIA

I am searching for the family of a soldier who was killed in the Korea War. When he entered service he gave Newport County , Rhode Island as his home of record. His remains were never recovered.

Soldier: JOSEPH FRANCIS SILVIA
Born: Feb. 18, 1932, Caucasian
Date of loss: Feb. 11, 1951, Prisoner of War (POW)

When the Korean War ended the enemy never returned or accounted for over 8,000 of our servicemen. They died in their hands. That was over 50 years ago. Since that time DNA has been perfected and also they are recovering remains in North Korea. Our government is obligated to return those remains to the proper family. DNA samples have been obtained from most of the families of these missing soldiers. For various reasons some families have not been located. The Silvia family is one of those missing.

When the remains are recovered and identified they will be returned to the family for proper burial. I am just an old (76 years) Combat Veteran out of the Korean War and thankful that I did return. I consider this a very noble cause and I hope that you can help in some way to find this family. For more information on the project you may go to http://www.jpac.pacom.mil/. My part in the program is to match up the lost families with the proper agency.

I will be grateful for any assistance in locating this family.

Harold Davis
40th Infantry Division
Korea ’52-‘53
910-791-2333
hgdavis@bellsouth.net
The name on the stone of Anthony and Lucy Silvia is William Martin who died in 1952. I know that recently in the last few years a second name, his wife I assume, has been added to the stone. I dont have that name recorded. I was mistaken on the cemetery name, they are buried in Woodside Cemetery in Cohasset. Sorry about that.

Hi, I have an Antoine L. Silvia in my family tree. He married Lucie A. McPhee and they had 13 or so kids in Cohasset. I am speculating that Manuel Silvia and Annie Fratus were Antoine's parents, but I am not sure of that. I know Antoine is buried in Beechwood Cem. in Cohasset, and there is another couple's name on the stone but I cant think of who it is at the moment. If you can clear up or make any connections, I would love to know about them.

My granfathers name was Leo Silvia and his wifes name was Irece. They lived in Massachusetts, Boston I believe, and then moved to Louisiana. Leo died before I was born in 1971 from diabetes. They had to children Ronald and Joanne. I believe Leo's parents names were Leopold Otto Silvia and Gloria Munoz. If anyone could give me any information on family tree, it would be great.

Angelo Silva/Silvia/Sylvia family from Italy

hello, i'm trying to see if one day i may be able to contact family in Italy. My great grandpa, Angelo SILVA, came to the united states with his wife Ann, and his kids, whose last names were changed to SILVIA. his grandkids' last names were changed to SYLVIA.

On the naturalization papers, it says...

Petition Vol 12 #2573 Certificate # 1313774
Nato in Monofroli - Parrocchia
Citta di Monopoli
Provincia DI BARI

...which means something along the lines that Angelo was born in Monofroli in the city of Monopoli, and the Barium province of Italy (i'm almost positive, although i'm not fluent in italian).

The names and ages listed on the papers were Minzia (20yrs), Laura (19), Teresa (15), Angelo (15 or 13), Sebastian (11), Pietro (7), Maria (4), Louis (2).

my great aunt doesn't remember anything about Minzia, Sebastian, or Maria, so we think they were someone else's kids and came with my family.

If you know any information about Angelo SILVA, or the family, especially anyone in italy, i would love to hear from you! hope to hear from someone =]

-jess-

Your post looked promising to me...Might your grandfather have been named Antoine? My great grandmother was Mary Lavinia Silvia, her father was Manuel Silvia 1852-1897, her mother was Isabelle Pratt of Cohassett Ma. 1856-1927. Their gravestone is in Cohasset, Beachwood cemetary. It lists children Frank 1879-1880 Henry 1891-1891 Mathew 1878-1919 then it lists Antoine Silvia 1810-1897 Mary his wife 1810-1895 John Silvia 1855-1943 then under that children Mathew Silvia age 22years and Antoine V. Silvia I know my great grandmother had 4 brothrs that she grew up around Mathew, who is buried in Brockton, William, (Willy) John, and I forget the other ones name. Think there might be a connection? Mary Lavinia Silvia married Phillipe A. Iotte they had a son Manuel Iotte and a daughter, my g mothe Estella May Iotte born in 1900
