Hello Kerryn,
I don't have their names at this time but I know ex-father-in-law George was born and lived in Huntly as a boy. He later moved to Glasgow, and married my ex-mother-in-law Margaret. I am hoping to call the crematory where he is buried to see if they have parents listed on their information like we do here in the USA.
Thanks for your post and I may be in touch again.
Dianne

More Sims from Eaglesham

I cannot see how my Eaglesham Sims were related to those already mentioned on this board. So here goes mine:

John Sim/Sim born about 1771 Eaglesham married Agnes Allan (B 1777 East Kilbride) in Bolton Le Moors (Lancashire, England) Jan 1799. Not sure why they married here - maybe they were too close cousins? He was said to be a dissenter.

John Sim's parents Robert Sim and Margaret Howie, both of Eaglesham. Agnes Allan's parents: Matthew Allan and Margaret Young.

John Sim and Agnes Allan's daughter Janet married Robert Allan (b 1818 east Kilbride) a cousin. They emigrated to Australia in 1852. These are my great X2 grandparents.

I'm searching for John Sim, said to have died at Carnoustie, and his wife, Agnes Allan. They had 9 children born between 1799 and 1819, the first in Bolton Le Moors, the rest in Eaglesham. Perhaps the firstborn was slightly before marriage although someone has submitted a neater version to the LDS :-)

I'm passing through Carnoustie in Sept 2011 (this year) and would love to visit his grave if it's in the area. Any ideas?

Jenni
Re: George Sim birth record

Hi Dianne,
I'm not sure if I've been of much help. My family and my husbands family heritage seem to be exclusively Scots with a wee branch from Ireland every now and again, not that that is much of a surprise as we're Scots born and bred.
The Scotlandspeople site is great and the speed with which you can uncover information seems to be phenomenal in relation to my family history friends who are trying to piece together their trees in England and Wales (where I now live). However, you can eat up credits pretty quickly.
I tend to do my research with several tabs open (Ancestry. familysearch, Scotlandspeople etc) and move from one to another to uncover the facts. If familysearch info is an extract taken from a local document, it's usually what you'll find via the Scotlandspeople site, if you are working in the OPR indexes you don't realy need to open them, so save yourself 5 credits e.g. birth , index entry tells you the christening date, names of both parents and the parish - full entry might tell you the fathers occupation, or whether the child was legitimate or not, but not much more in my experience. Ancestry only has census transcriptions, google maps or parish maps from the era on another tab might be useful if you don't know the placenames in the area.(some of the transcriptions are hilarious)Unfortunately, the Sims in my husbands tree (and George Sim in particular) date back over 2 centuries ago and the records relate to central Scotland (West Lothian and Stirlingshire) so I don't think they will be of use.
Happy and economic research!!!! If you get stuck just send me a message and I'll help if I can.
June

Hi June,
Thanks for your quick response. I had already done so much of the work on the Familysearch.org site and had dates etc, but not the actual birth, marriage, or death records. It was mostly what had been passed down the line from family and the census search from familysearch.org. I did make a couple of mistakes and lost about 8 credits, but found so much with the branches of my Scottish family. My mother was born and raised there, so her parents and everyone beyond that was easier. I married a Scotsman and his family (my daughters ancestors)were all Scottish with the exception of one family coming from Ireland. So from the sounds of it, I am on the right track going this route. I don't need certified documents and will continue working with the GROS etc.
I married a Sim whose parents were also born there. George Sim was from the Huntly, Aberdeenshire area. Here is what I have:-
George Sim,
b:-11 Sep 1929
m:-7 Dec 1951 to Margaret "Madge" Humphrey Finn
d:-14 Aug 2009
I have no further information about him except that he had a brother named Bill Sim. I have plenty on the Finn side, and would love to take that next step in George's family.
Dianne

Hi Dianne,
Not sure what George Sim you are looking for or where. There are Sims/Symes in my husbands paternal tree.
Just a note though, for Scots records unless you need a formal certificate for legal purposes you can download and print/save register entries for a few credits, which is a big saving in family history terms. The Scots have that advantage over the rest of the UK because you are only paying a fraction of the cost. The other side of the coin is that you can research and confirm info so quickly that it can eat up cash quickly. So if you've spent 100 dollars in a matter of hours you've either gained a lot of info, made a lot of mistakes or alternatively bought formal certificates that you don't necessarily need.
I'll help if I can.
June

George Sim birth record

I have the GROS data for George Sim and others in the family. I am wondering if someone could tell me if the fees are the same for both online or in a local facility? Also is there maybe a way to order by mail and lessening the expense? I have 3/4 of my family ancestors in or from Scotland, so this could add up in a hurry. I have already accessed ScotlandsPeople.gov.uk and burned up close to $100 in just a few hours! I hope someone can help me decide the best way to handle the expense based on the volume of records I want. Thx in advance. Dianne

George Sim - Jane Johnstone

I am hoping someone may be able to help me please.

My grandfather James Sim noted on his second marriage certificate to Beatrice in Australia, his parents were George Sim and Jane Johnstone, both born Scotland.

On his first marriage certificate to Eleanor Bates (in lancashire) the free bdm register only lists George.

My grandfather James Sim on that certificate says he was born in Newcastle England around 1872. I have been unable to find any birth records for James or anything re his parents George and Jane. I did find 2 census that had a George, Jane and son James (as well as other children) with Jarrow, Durham noted on them as the place of birth of some of the children which I believe is near Newcastle.

Just wondering if anyone can see any birth certificates/records for James or marriage certificate for George/Jane. I am after any information at all.

Thanks for looking for me

Kerryn

Hi Kerryn

I've posted the birth details for James on your Lancashire board query. On the 1901 census James gives his place of birth as Jarrow, so I think you've got the right family but his birth certificate would confirm that.

Edited to add:
A check of the 1861 census brings up no trace of George & Jane, so perhaps they were still in Scotland at that time (there are possible matches of unmarried George & Jane in Aberdeenshire) and their marriage took place there before the birth of their first child in1865, as there's no marriage record on the England & Wales register.

Best wishes

Linda

Hi Ian, thanks for your response. I have the following information about Alexander Sim, my gg grandfather. Alexander was born about 1846 in Dallas, Morayshire and was a blacksmith. His father may also have been Alexander and mother Margaret (maiden name unknown to me). My gg grandfather Alexander married Margaret Lang, born about 1851 in Kilbirnie, Ayrshire. Alexander & Margaret had the following children:

Margaret - born 1872 Elgin
William - born 1874 Edzel
James - born 1876 Carmyllie
Elizabeth - born 1877 Carmyllie
Alexander - born 1879 Carmyllie
David (my g grandfather) - born 1880 Carmyllie
George - born 1882 Carmyllie
Janet - born 1885 Elgin
Ann - born 1889 Buckie

Is any of this information familiar to you?

If so, are you able to tell me anything about Alexander's (1846) family such as other brothers and sisters and if you know his mothers maiden name and/or anything about her family, and of course anything else about the Sim line. I really don't have much information about the Sim family, only what I've been able to piece together from my g grandfather's marriage certificate as to the names of his parents and then cross referencing with census information found on this site.

Thanks
Liz

Sim's in Scotland

We are trying to locate family in Scotland.
Catherine Rutherford Balfour married George Sim in 1922, Catherine passed away in Glasgow in 1989 (info found on scotlandspeople website). We are unsure when George passed away. They had a son, also named George, born in 1923 and I believe his wife's name is Isabel but I could be wrong.
If anyone has any information or can direct me to who I should contact to help try and their family I'd greatly appreciate hearing from you. We've hit a brick wall.
