Hi! Diane,
My name is Linda Simmonds Patterson one of my relatives and I have been working on the Miles Simmonds. She is related to him by marriage of Lavina Wescoatt Simmonds Warner. We would like to be in touch with you as she lives in Washington State and me in Oregon. I would love to get you email address so I can invite you to see my tree. May be we can help each other out. My Grandfather was Ernest Lazell Simmonds, His father was Adelbert Eugene Simmonds, His Father was William Vincent Simmonds, and his father was Nicholas Simmonds. Now you have some of these as brothers? So not sure why that is. Miles and Lavina had 7 children together, Charles E., Henny, Quinton J., Adelbert, Alice E., William E., and Mary Kay. Which one do you come though. Adelbert Eugene is my Great granfather and he is the one that married Phebe Marie Hubbs, So am not sure Miles son middle name of Adelbert. Flora Behmer is my grandfather sister. When you look up my family tree you will see some of the same surnames you that you have. I really hope you get this and I hear back from you. We just maybe related too. Sherry is the one who found your post but she not a member of Ancestry so she emailed me this morning. Have a blessed day, Linda
bammie232010@gmail.com
I know it's been awhile since you had wrote so if you don't have ancestry I encluded my email for you. Hope to hear from you.

I saw a hint somewhere that we should look at the first son's middle name to determine if it is the maiden name of the mother. If this is true, then Benton would be Ruth's last name.

William and Ruth would have met and married in Lousiana as their children are born in Louisiana. Were there Cherokee Indians in Lousiana pre 1840?

Ruth was born around 1824 in Louisiana. Would her father be listed in the 1820 or 1830 Federal Census?

So many questions!!! :)

Amanda Hart
amandasuehart@live.com

Information I have on Simmonds of Indiana. Mary Elizabeth Simmonds, born May 20, 1859 (possibly Baker's Corners, Ind.) was the great granddaughter of Joseph Middleton, who was born Feb. 10, 1755 in North Carolina. Joseph Middleton's son John Middleton, born Dec 24, 1776 in Deep River, NC married Mary Mills, daughter of Amos & Elizabeth Mills. She was born may 12, 1779 also in Deep River, NC. They had 7 children, of whom their daughter, Rachel, was the youngest. She was born April 18, 1830 in Stillwater, Ohio. She married Samuel Simmonds, who family tradition says came from Maryland. He bought the property in Cedar Run, MI in 1881. Rachel (Middleton) Simmonds died june 23,1897 and is buried in Long Lake Twp cemetery. Samuel and rachel Simmonds had four children.
1. Joshua, m-1st Emma Baker; 2nd Cora Haywood. Children by 1st wife: a. Joseph Bart b-875 d-1937 m-Mary Reddy no children
b. Charls b-1879 d-1959 m-1st Inez 2nd-Pearl no children
c. May b-1877 d-1896 unmarried
d. Claude b- 5/01/1882 Cedar Run, MI d-1937i m- Alida Rhodes He had 4 children: Gertrude, Charles, Dorothy & Robert.
2. Mary Elizabeth, b-5/20/1859 m- William Clark Whinnery
3. Phillip, m-1st ? one son, Frank m-2nd Ora E. Cox one child, Olive
4. Elwood m-? children: Edna, Leota, Chole,

Hope this helps you in your search. I have a little more info on the Middletons, lots on the Whinnery's. It took us a while to figure out where the Simmonds came into our family but our search found my husband's mother's mother is Mary Elizabeth who married William C. Whinnery.
Hi
We are trying to make sense of all the FISH families in the world.
Jamie Fish has had more than 40 families do their DNA tests so far. The results has been able to connect families that otherwise would not be possible to connect.
The DNA study so far is mostly on USA families with some connections to England.

We need to extend the study to include a lot more English Fish families and Scottish, Welsh and Irish Fish families.

Would you please consider joining our FISH FAMILY DNA Project. My Fish family comes form Berkshire England 1700 and our DNA tests and results are already completed.

Please see Jamie Fish’s DNA website and see how you can contribute. http://www.familytreedna.com/public/fish/default.aspx

We will be most excited to have you as part of our study.
All you need is a male FISH family member so we can do the YDNA test.

By participating in our study, you might be very pleasantly surprised by the results, which can help you narrow down where your family comes from and what other Fish family branches you connect with. The connected Fish families might help you break your brick wall as well, so lots of benefits for joining our study.

Thanks
Walter in London, England

My 2x Grt. Grand Father was George Fox b1805/7 Bristol. He was a gardener according to his wife's death certificate. He was married to Jane Simmonds in 1830 Bristol. I have never been able to find a birth for him, and have purchased 3 death certificates to date for 1849 all dying in Bristol and they are the only George Foxs' for that year, none are him, so he obviously was still alive but not with the family. I haven't found him on 1851 census or 1861.

I am trying to discover where my 3x Gt Grand father Robert was born. I always imagined it was Winterbourne Bristol as he was a Hatter and a lot of Simmonds were bapt. there and worked in the Hat industry. However, he married in Southwark Middlesex, and was a Hatter at the time of his marriage, and his Wife Hannah Axtell's father was also a Hatter in Middlesex so now I think perhaps he came from that area and not Bristol. The family were living in Winterbourne in 1807 as his daughter Jane was born there. Maybe they came here for work. I have managed to go back another generation with the Axtells but have no idea where to begin with Robert Simmonds b1778. they also had a son Henry b1810 Winterbourne.

I've been researching my Family tree for over 2 years now and have manged to find a living cousin in Brighton England that's now 80 years of age. I've included my Family Tree website address for you to look at.
I don't have any connection to this family but found this while doing other research. I am posting hundreds of these “blurbs” because I believe it helps to see our ancestors as people rather than just names and dates.

This entry is from the Rockland, Maine Courier-Gazette of January 9, 1941 in the "Talk of the Town" column:

"Charles H. Simmonds of Jefferson, who had many friends in this city, was found dead in bed, yesterday morning. The deceased was a retired Philadelphia business man."

Hi, yep, i have a chart on ancestry.com, and if you could tell me how to look at them, i'd love to see others, but go to it and help yourself to whatever you need - yes, yes and yes, carpenters and theatrical stuff and auctioneers clerks: My dad Norman Sidney Greenwood Simmonds and brother Oswald both of Sydney: their dad was Sidney John Fawcett Simmonds b.1882 (address Marquis Road St Pancras) county of Middlesex (and this is where we get interesting) who appears to have had two brothers we knew nothing about - John Rewe Simmonds b.1891 and Herbert Guy Francis Simmonds b.1885. John Rewe Western Simmonds dad was Francis John Simmonds b.1839, who married Fanny Western b.1838 He was a carpenter/joiner. Does this help? Do I get a white Christmas yet?

My great grandfather was John Rowe Western Simmonds and he lived at 56 Marquis Road St Pancras Middlesex with his wife Emily Eva Fawcett Simmonds (nee Eyres) and my grandfather was Sidney John Fawcett Western Simmonds, my dad was Norman Sidney Greenwood Simmonds and my uncle was Oswald Simmonds. All are deceased (duh!) But there was rumour of another brother and I found a Ms Worner in the Knowwhere website but i cannot now, after nine years (I actually found myself and got excited, it was some note i'd written nine years ago!) get in touch with her - so if anyone knows anything, please let ME know. I'd love to find out more, i'd love to know there are Lords and Ladies in the family and a castle or two!! Going as far back to the middle ages would be great if anyone knows anything - I am really into Saxon stuff and i do strongly believe in genetic memories (if not reincarnation), alternatively, if i find a rellie or two in the UK, well, i loved it when i went there and i miss it terribly, and we can always houseswap...........would you like a sunny Christmas (we have a small pool). Alternatively if anyone over there feels like doing some research for me - - -

Hi Rich,

My great-great grandfather was Samuel Simmonds, born in Maryland, 1815. He married C. Rachel Middleton, born in Ohio, 1820. They children were all born in Indiana, Philip (1849), Joshua (1851), Elwood (1853), and 1 daughter, Mary Sarah (1859). Around 1884, the family moved to Grand Traverse County, Michigan, where they owned and operated a sawmill. They moved back to Hamilton County, Indiana in late 1899. You can read about their years spent in Michigan by referring to records from the Grand Traverse Herald 1885-89. There is an entry dated Jan. 11, 1900 that may be referring to your Claude Leslie Simmonds. "Claude Simmonds is now making his home with Wm. Whinnery. He has been working for Jos. Ayers of Oviatt." Mary Sarah Simmonds was married to William Clark Whinnery on May 5, 1888 in Long Lake, Grand Traverse, Michigan.
I would love to hear from you to know if any of these names are familiar.

S. Henry was a soldier and had children born in Chatham Kent 1837 and 1841 and Jersey 1843 and 1845. He was married to Nancy Marett, born in Jersey 1812/13, so they were probably married in Jersey. I am trying to find out if Henry was a Jerseyman or was born in England.

Death of Mrs. Revecca Simmonds

In Memoriam

Mrs. Rebecca Simmonds, mother of Mrs. E. M. Johnson, of this city, and S. E. Simmonds, of Philadelphia, author of “Shifting Shadows” died at her home in Wills Point last Friday morning from paralysis. Mrs. Simmonds was a pioneer of Terrell, moving here in January, 1875. Later she removed to Wills Point where she passed a quiet and happy life until the first of this month when she suffered a paralytic stroke. Shortly after the attack she came with her daughter to Terrell and spent several days. Returning to Wills Point apparently well, she suffered a second stroke of paralysis on the 12th instant, which left her entirely prostrate. She lingered a little over a week, never rallying to any marked degree from the depression into which the second attack threw her, finally breathing her last on Friday morning at 8:15 o’clock.

Mrs. Simmonds was 65 years old and was twice married. Seven children survive her, one of whom a daughter, lives in England. She was a noble Christian woman and her death is deeply deplored by all who knew her.

The following beautiful poem, entitled “My Mother,” and written by S. E. Simmond, son of the deceased, is appended as a fitting tribute to the memory of this good woman:

My mother, ah! how the old memories are stirred

In my world wearied heart at the sound of that word

How all the remembrance of childhood’s bright days,

Comes over my heart like the sun’s cheering rays

How memory’s bright thoughts weave with pleasure or pain

The scenes I have known to know never again.

How gentle your love and how tender first lisping prayer:

Ere my heart had grown bitter with sorrow and strife,

Or the shadow of morning had darkened my life.

Dear mother, the pleasure of life or its pain

Can ner’er fill my life with your presence again.

Ah! how the sweet love filled your dear eyes again

When I tossed in a torture of feverish pain,

How cool and how loving your hand oft caressed

My parched aching brow; while with never a res

The weary days passed, and yet ever the same

Your unwearied love; while with passionate pain

From the “shadow of death” your soul rose in prayer

That my unworthy life to your love might be spared.

You love me my mother; I love you. I bring

A love that surpasses all language to sing;

My heart throbs in safety for stronger and surer

Than all other love, and sweeter and purer,

Is young glorious love, that vibrates in vain

For some music as sweet or some answering strain;

For no music so sweet to my heart as your love

And its answering chord is the great heart of God.

And though you dear forehead is furrowed by care

And time has twined silver threads in your silver hair,

Yet never a face ‘mongst the faces I see

Is as tenderly loving and gentle to me,

An ne’er till my throbbing heart cases to beat

Will a voice ever cheer me with cadence more sweet.

My spirit is darkened with pain when I trace

The thought perhaps I may see your sweet face

In calmest repose; your brow cold and white,

Your loving lips still and the sweet gentle light

Vanished from your dear eyes; when God calls you above.

My hungering heart will be faint for your love.

My mother, if I should be counted among

The glad host who join in the glorious song

Of redemption, I know I shall be with you then,

And the old love grown sweeter will come back again,

And the strain of the music more happy will be

If your voice is the first that shall waft it to me.
My brother traced back a Simmonds family in Kent County, Maryland. Not sure of the year. My mother's maiden name was Simmonds, and her father was Claude Leslie Simmonds, born in Grand Traverse County, Michigan in 1892.
