Simon

I am looking for any information that could shed light on my ancestry. I was told my Great great grandfather was named Joseph "Red" Simon who was born in Canada or the Indies,(spain). The only thing i know for sure is that he was married to Ellen (dont know her maiden name), my aunt referenced a name of hers by Manuel, i dont know if it is her last name or part of her first name. They had quite a few chilldren. A direct decentdant of mine would be G. Edgar Simon, who married Cary ( i dont know her maiden name). Their union beget, Glaffey R. (Revaca) Simon or(siman) might be spelled wrong in the census, she always said it was Simon. The other children were Leroy and Ella Mae Simon. There were more but i wont post just yet. I know Glaffey, 20th feb. 1920, She had grey eyes and naturally red hair (which she use to dye by way of coffee grounds)(might have been referred to as mulatto as far as race)and her father Edgar (mulatto as well)was born in louisiana. Edgar also had other wives, Two following his divorce from Cary. Not sure, but one was Martha and the third was Arnela i believe. If any of this sounds familiar please contact me asap. thank you.

There are too many similarities for there not to be some connection. I had a first cousin Gladys (Goldie) who married Jack Simon. They originally lived in Plainfield, NJ but moved to southern California many years ago. I believe they had a daughter. Jack was in the egg business. I have all of Gladys's family history if we are talking about the same family. My home email is cymar@fea.net

There is a Mary Simon in our family tree. She is the sister of my Grandfather. I believe she, and her spouse lived in South Dakota with their family.

Could you, possibly, say where the family came to from Hungary? Our family came to Canada and settled in Saskatchewan. However some of the family moved to the USA, and to Eastern Canada.

If you guys run across a Mary Simon, please let me know. My g-grandmother came from Hungary and either married a Simon, or that was her maiden name. We don't know-- her first husband died and she married my g-grandfather. I saw Simon + Hungary and thought it was worth a shot.

Appreciate it . I am also related through my Paternal side.
We are Family and I know since Harrison was my Great Great Grandfather . You are closer then I am to Job Sr. Please do let me know
Cause it's frustrating taking my dads mothers side clear back to the Vikings and yet the Paternal side seems so illusive .
Some is clearly lack of very many children.
Would be very happy if you find more.
I started as a beginner too just to uncover what I could.
So just dig , dig , dig :)))
Keep in touch as I have so little for relatives to know on my dad
( Alton's side)'
Always happy to hear back from you !

Thanks so much! That is sad how you lost your hungarian. Dad has too quite a bit. I have not ever spoke the language othe than learning the phrase echt dem valad (not sure of spelling). Apparently this translates to God be with you.
I too have lusted after the idea of going to Budapest Hungary. I think it would be so great. I thought it would be great to go there with Dad as he is really getting on in age but still quite healthy. Why do you say that the Simon/ Simogy line is quite the mystery? Do you think some answers are held in hungary? do we have family there that you are aware of?
I want to thank you so much for your willingness to share information. What would be the best way for me to obtain this information?
Thanks so much for everything. Talk soon! Bye for now.

Hi Alison,
It will be my pleasure to share our family history with you. I have been compiling it (off and on) for since about 1987. (This includes my family history on my father's side, too, though.)
I could speak Hungarian, quite well, when I was younger. It was how I chose to converse with Grandpa and Grandma Simon (mainly because I thought they were calling me Teddy, instead of Terry lol). My mother taught me Hungarian, and some Hungarian songs when I was a child. Then, when I had my daughter, she taught her the songs and some Hungarian. However, after Grandma died, and Grandpa never visited often, I lost most of it. I can only say a few words now, and can understand some, but not very much anymore.
Are you able to speak Hungarian, Alison?
I have thought, many times, I would love to visit Hungary to trace family history there. It is quite the mystery in the Simon/Simogy line for us.
I really look forward to talking with you, too, Alison. It will be great, and even greater to meet you.
Hello Alison,

It is great to hear from you, too.

Aunt Ethel called me, last evening, with the request that I give you any information I have on our family. Of course, I told her that you had contacted me, and I am more than happy to share my information with you, and to assist you in our family research. :)

As for the descrepancy in our Great Grandmother, Terez (Teresa) Simody(i) name, it often happened when names were recorded by other people. The person, recording the name, spelled the name according to their idea of the spelling.
My information is from the passenger records on the ship on which the family arrived from Hungary, Alison. The names of all of the family, and their ages were recorded (on the ship passenger list) by officials. (This does not mean they were aboutly correct. However, the Hungarian Teresa, Theresia, Theresa, is often Terez or Tereza.)

Yes, I did meet your father, years ago, Alison. (I wish I could have met all of you, then, too.) He was in Regina working, at the time, I believe. He would go and have lunch with my mother, often, and sometimes, dinner, too.

Like you, I am looking very forward to meeting with you, in person, Alison. It seems strange to live in the same province and never to have met. (But, then, I just met a first cousin, on my father's side, who has lived and worked in Saskatoon all of his life.)

I will try to get copies of all of my information to you, asap.

By the way, you father's name in Hungary is Karoly. You may already have known this.
My mother's name, in Hungarian is Margit. :)

I am hoping to call you by the end of this week. Then, perhaps, I can get your address and send you the copies of all of the family records I have in my possession.

Talk with you, soon.

Terry

Hello there Terry! It is so good to hear from you! I just got off the phone with aunt Ethel who said she just spoke with you. I am so very excited about your kind and generous offer of information. Thank you so very much. I would love to have copies of any and all that you have.

Just a question though. Terez Simogy. I thought that I read somewhere that her name is Theresia Theresia Simogy. Have you seen that anywhere in your search? What do you think is the reason for the discrepancy?

Please feel free to call me anytime. Aunt Ethel told me that she gave you my phone number so please use it. I would love to talk with you. I remember my dad used to go visit aunt Margaret sometimes in Regina. Did you meet my dad?

I would love to meet you this summer. This is very exciting.
Talk to you soon!
Alison

Hello,
Your father is my mother's (Margaret's) brother. He had a twin sister named Caroline. (I have all of their family names in both English and Hungarian) and birthdays.
I have quite a bit of family history in Canada on both our Simon and Porkolab (Grandmother, Sophia's maiden name).
I have the family records of when the two families (Simon and Porkolab) arrived in Canada. Our great grandparents names were Istvan Simon and Terez Simogy.
As well, our other great grandparents names were Andras (Andrew) Porkolab and Sophia (Zsophia) Serestyen.
Also, Allison, I have copies of the homestead records for Grandfather, John (Janos) Simon, and will gladly share all I have with you.
It is nice to have another person researching our family history.
I am hoping to travel to Humboldt and Middle Lake this summer and get photos of the graves. It is a bit disappointing that the land passed out of the family. However, maybe we will still be able to get some information from residents who have remained throughout the years.
Talk with you, soon.
Your cousin,
Terry

I believe her father's name was Fritz, but I cannot be sure. I don't exactly the town she was from, but it was near/in Poland. Klara was born in 1874. My daughter and I are the only remaining Jews of that family. We are only daughters of only daughters for several generations. I am hoping we are connected.

I'm a Asian specifically Filipino. I was born ang grew up in the Philippines. I studied the history of the Philippines. In my elementary days, social studies subject. We are required to learn our countries history.
My lastname, from my father side is SIMON I always wonder there is a English name in the Philippines. Like my fathers last name. I knew he had a european physical appearance especially when he was young, so are my uncles.
I know also that 2 foreign nationals went to Philippines.
The Spaniards and Americans or European Americans.
My question is how did my fathers, fathers or grandfather got thier lastname. Are their son of weddlock from European Amecans,or Spaniards? Maybe not or maybe yes,but if they sons of wedlock, they will not give their lastname to them.
I read the reply here and the origin of my lastname. Most of my lastname origin came from Germany.
I also read a read that during Spanish period there are German,Ducth, and British or other European who is doing business and trading in Philippines.
Are this European are the one who is the origin of my grandfathers lastname ? Unknown.
The census data of Philippines is not compleate and I don't have access with it. The record was burned during WW2.
Of course my hair is black is black now. My eyes is brown.
The only European physical features I have is my big nose and big brown rounded eyes.
I know my fathers side attitude. When they got mad and scolded someone, they really scold someone. They have also the attitude that when they work, they want everything square, they don't like a work or job that is touch up only.
I remember my fathers older brother in the Philippines. He is a lawyer,He got a driver and he just got finished coming from work and he is going home to other park of the city, his house. The car did not work. He scolded his driver very hard. He told his driver "What are you ? you are my driver you supposed to take car of the car so that you can drive me? Now I'm in a hurry I don't have a car to drive.
I got so many business in a court to take care on.
Well, I said to myself, yes,he scolded his driver very hard, but he is right. The driver should check the car, battery and etc. Before my uncle arrive to drive him.
a driver job is not only waiting for the boss to arrive and drive him/her. Before the boss arrive he should check the car if it is in good condition. He is not dependable or maybe not really thingking what to do.
My personality also like my father side,I want a job that is good not a job that is fake.
I know and I have seen many people who does not do a good job,but I don't react because in my heart or mind that is the way they are. Every people are different.
They like Germans when they got mad. I heard that German are the most intelligent person in the world. If that is the truth, I'm happy that I have a German ancestry.
Without a lot of research I couldn't tell you how many Simons married Goetz/Gettz/Getz. I've found this to be a fairly incestuous bunch of folks. Just kidding! But the truth is that many families lived for generations in that region of the city named the "Neck". They intermarried over and over again through the generations. Not an uncommon thing at that time. I've had to repeatedly delete a record because I had an individual on my tree twice...once with birth family and then later with spouse. The Simons clan did eventually spread out in the city and surely some went to Germantown. The name sometimes was Simon and sometimes Simons.

Henry Simon and Sarah Madera are well represented on Ancestry. You'll find plenty of data on them.

Glad your tree will be public. Happy researching and ask for help if you need any.
Jane

Hi Cousins!

I have made my tree public. It's Willse-Simon.

An ancestry.com customer service rep told me it may take up to two weeks for the change to take effect.

I'm delighted to find so much information! And to meet you, too. I will likely have a lot of questions, so I appreciate your help in advance. :)

My first of many questions:
How many Goetz/Gettz/Getz family siblings marry Simons? I've counted three so far.

Do we have a Germantown connection?

Census records indicate that Henry Simon b. 1822 m. Sarah Madera b. 1826 and lived in Kensington. Could I have the wrong Henry and Sarah?

Many thanks!!
Christine
Well, no problem Cousin. I think I calculated it correctly and we are 7th cousins. Trinity Lutheran Cemetery is at S. 18th and Wolf Sts. in Philadelphia. Many Simons are buried there, but I don't believe your grandfather is, I am not sure. Your Simon line leads to our great, great....grandfather Johann Christoph. After John and Catherine Powers, your next grandparents are Henry George Simon and Sarah Elizabeth Madera, then John Michael Simon and Elizabeth Honnecker, then Heinrich Simon and Apollonia Gettz, then Johann Christoph Simon (1740-1798). That's as far as I've gotten. There are many cousins roaming around ancestry. Glad to meet another one. Therese

Thank you for your reply.

I am the granddaughter of George W. F. Simon (Son of George W. and Ellen) b. 22 Feb 1900, d. 07 Jul 1982 (m. Katherine Wheeler). My mother is George's daughter, and lived on Magazine lane until the 1940's. I have confidently traced my ancestry back to John Simon m. Catherine Powers, and their parents. I just want to confirm that I am on the right track. Both of their families trace back to Johann Christoph, correct?

Where is the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery?

I have not made my tree public yet, but if it would help, I can change that.

I appreciate your help!

There are many Simons from the neck. The line usually starts with Johann Christoph Simon, born 1740 in Germany and died 1798 in Passyunk. Many are buried in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, and for the most part were farmers. Do you have any leads of where you'd like to start, because much information is here on ancestry.

There's more than "one" Barbara Raskob.
The name is actually Barbara Nina Raskob. She married Charles Lyon in, I think, the late 1930s. She had 3 daughters, one of whome she named after herself (Barbara Nina Lyon).

This daughter, now 70ish, married Ted Bremekamp.
