Hi Elizabeth

Would you be able to send me the details o how you fit into John Sinclair's family tree so I can add tem into what I am attempting to complete. Any photos sent as email attachments would be appreciated, too. My email address is allenh@chariot.net.au . I've been travelling to various places trying to glean information from local historians. It's time-consuming but a fascinating journey.

Regards
Heather
Photos would be good, too, if sent as attachments and labelled. I hope to create a photo book around them. Are you related to the Sinclair family?

I would like to have contact with any Thomas Douglas Francis Sinclair descendants.

Warm greetings,
Jeanne Lorf Linley Harding
jeannelinley2000@yahoo.com
Hi

I have the family bible of which you are writing! It made its way to Australia with either John or William Sinclair. It contains several hand written inserts about the family birth dates. I am presently working on updating the family trees of both John and William since their arrival in Australia in 1839.

regards

Heather

Only because she married Francis Marion Griffin in February of 1906 and Lewis Sinclair was born in 1905..so if he died it would have had to have been in 1905..I would think..He was quite a bit older than she,,and I always figuered he died..and that they were NOT divorced. Did he and Emma divorce?
I looked further on the Hiram's Sincler in Michigan..and you are right it is not of the same family..By 1870 Hiram who would have been the right age for your Hiram's father, was married to Julia..and stays in Michigan..also found his marriage to her. In 1807 they have two children, neither a Hiram..so that elemenants that one..and when I first saw it I thought bet this is it!! You are having the same trouble as I have had on my Holdens..Good luck..and I will keep my eyes opened for you. I have looked at the library in the county seat, Stillwater, but have not turned up anything on Hiram and Minnie. There are quite a few records on her sister and husband as they married in Payne county and stayed here in the county. D. Allen

First of all "HAPPY ST. PATRICKS DAY".

Thanks for the info. but this family I couldn't document as being the one connected to our family. If you check the family migration there is something there and I will recheck my research. There is a J.H. Sinclair from Payne County, Ok. with an Emma as a wife that I reviewed and I feel that Hiram and this J.H. is related maybe brothers or cousins as they seem to show up in the same city/states together such as Kansas & Ok. But to date I can't really connect Hiram and J.H. Sinclair. Why else would J.H. and Hiram live in Payne County, Ok. at approx. the same time. J.H. even has a wife name "Emma". Anyway I will recheck the info you sent me and I appreciate it.

I was checking the cemetaries in and around Payne but have only located Hirams daughters with Minnie Alice. I will keep you posted. On one of the obits for his daughter Bertha, Hiram was the only name used for her dad. When you wrote me earlier you had mentioned that you believed Hiram had died abt. 1906 why did you believe this???

Well first the good or bad news. Wiley was married to Hiram Sinclair. She was born in Kentucky if my memory serves me. She is my biological g.grandmother. Her name was sometimes misspelled so it would be Wyley etc. Emma and Hiram was my connection to Minnie Alice. The reason they had a picture of Emma may be due to the fact it was in Hirams personal belongings and maybe Minnie ended up with it after she and Hiram parted for whatever reason. If you have a picture of Emma J. Wiley I would die to see it. My g.grandmother was killed by a drunk driver as she walked to church. Could you scan and email to me. All we have left of g.grandmother Emma was the bible she carried to church that fateful day.

Your grandfather or g.grandfather Louis had another name do you know that other given name? I found a Louis/Lewis in the 1930 census in Independence I believe and it seems like it was close to the right birth year for your Lewis/Louis. He was born in 1905 is that right. Could he have been a Charles Louis as I found a Charles buried in Payne County, Ok.

Are you living near Oklahoma?

I have a picture of a woman that was in my grandparents pictures. The original picture had Wiley on the back-Oswego, Kansas.
The picture I am looking at now is a copy..but somewhere I think I have the original. Did the Wiley'sl Sinclairs come from that part of Kansas. I thought my grandmother had Wiley's on her side and had thought this picture to be on her side..but have never found anything on it. I cannot imagine though that my grandfather would have a picture of Hiram's wife's people, unless they were related somehow.
I cannot find anyone related to the father of my grandfather, Lewis Holden..so it could be possible that he was related some way to the Wiley's. He was born in Illinois. Do you know where your Wiley,Sinclair grandmother came from other than Kansas? I am like you, I keep hunting for my Lewis Holden Family,, and always run up again a dead ends..but sometimes it only takes a piece for the puzzle to fit together...I have had that happen before.
Re: Hiram Sinclair

My grandfather was Hugh Holden. His sister was married to Hiram..This is what I have on her..Minnie Alice Holden was born June 1, 1879 in Ks. She died of pneumonia on November 12, 1918, at the age of 39 years old, and is buried at Mt. Hope Cemetery north of Ripley, Oklahoma, Payne County.
Minnie first married Hiram (St.Clair) Sinclair in Ks. He was born April 1861 in Hartford, Van Buren, Micigan to possibly Wm. H. (St. Clair) Sinclair and Minerva. As of March 1885, he was living in Chautauqua, Ks., and was married to Emma Wylie. The children are believed to be Mary, Laura S., Sarah aka Suzy Delilah, Mammie Minerva and Nathan Carl Sinclair. In the 1900 census at Rifle, Garfield County, Co. we again find the Sinclair family. Hiram was married to Minnie Holden around the year of 1894. He was 39 years old and Minnie was 21. They have two daughters Minnie May age 5 and Ethel E. age 2. Daughter Bertha was born August 1900 shortly after the census was taken. By 1901 the family traveled to Washington State where daughter Zenobia was born. Son Lewis was born 1905 in Oklahoma. It is thought that Hiram died sometime around the year of 1905. Minnie Holden St.Clair married Francis Marion Griffin on February 6, 1906 at Ripley, Oklahoma,
Don't know whether I gave this to you before or not..but maybe there might be something to help you. I don't remember were you related in anyway to Minnie, or was it just Hiram's first family? Be glad to help you but this is all I have and know. I believe that you e-mailed my at billdeeallen1@suddenlink.net
that is my official e mail address now. Received this on the old one. D. Allen
Yes we did converse on Nate Sinclair as to the letter that was rec. by your grandfather but it has been a while. I am the g.great granddaughter through Emma Wiley and Hiram Sinclair, they were my g.great grandparents on the paternal side. Hiram is still driving me to distraction, Ha!! Can't move forward as he always used only the name "Hiram" and do not know what became of him. I never heard anything about him from my grandmother and like you said the relatives are long gone. As to my relation to Minnie Alice, I guess, if there is a sort of thing, she would be a step-grandmother as Hiram being my biological g.grandfather. Boy this gets crazy doesn't it. Ha!!! Anyway your feeling is that maybe he passed away, Hiram did in abt. 1905? I have checked some of the cemetaries in Payne County and have located nothing. If only I had two names on Hiram maybe I could rest but I won't give up.

Thanks.

Re: William Hogg and/or Ogg

Hello,
I think we share a common ancestor, and although I have no information for you, I am hoping you might have some to share with me!

My 5th great grandfather was John Ogg, born 1723 in Whaligoe, Wick, Caithness Scotlan, to a WILLIAM OGG, possibly your ancestor as well. There were SINCLAIRS that were witnesses to the christening in 1723. His wife was Mary (maiden name unknown) and they emigrated to Virginia from Scotland in July, 1752. John bought land in what is now Greene Co., then Orange Co., Virginia, most all of which he subsequently lost, and he died in Orange Co. in 1798.

Although the relationship is unknown, one of John's neighbors was Alexander Ogg, slightly younger, and family legend holds that he was John's brother. I believe this is the same Alexander, born ten years later, in 1733, likewise to William Ogg, in Whaligoe, Wick, Caithness, Scotland.

My 4th gr grandfather was named William Ogg, ostensibly for John's father, William, born in 1769, Orange, now Greene Co., Virginia. He married there, migrated to Kentucky less than ten miles from where I now live. He and his wife both died in 1851.

You might appreciate the fact that William had a son born in 1802 named SINCLAIR OGG, no doubt to honor that old Scottish family of which he was evidently very proud.

You can see that it is very likely we share William Ogg, father of my John, as a common forbear; this Wm would have been born ca. 1700, possibly earlier. The Sinclair connection is no doubt anchored by the fact that my 4th gr grandfather named a son Sinclair, and the fact that Sinclairs were witnesses to the christening of his father John in Caithness, in 1723.

I hope to hear from you at your earliest convenience. I have always hoped to find more about this family, and God willing, to travel to Scotland one day and visit the area where they lived. Call it a pipe dream!

I look forward to hearing from you,

Todd D. Moberly

Hello Maureen and Elizabeth. Lovely to see your responses.

I'm Canadian, so am not very familiar with Argyleshire. Can you make sense of these scraps of evidence I have for my Archibald fitting into your family?

This, in my grandmother's handwriting, badly written and with lots of parts crossed out:
"Died on Oct 11, 1864, of heart disease, Archibald Sinclair at age 63, the eldest son of the late Captain Archibald Sinclair of the 79th Highlanders and Royal Veteran Battalion, near ('near' is crossed out) Boulton near ('near' is crossed out again) Bath of Glen Molen, near Uriford, Argyleshire."

This marriage announcement in the British Medical Journal I found online, for Archibald's daughter, my great grandmother:
"Pooley—Sinclair.—On June 25, (1878) at Bath, Walter Moritz, only surviving son of Charles Pooley, F.R.C.S., F.S.A.. F.G.S., of Weston-super- Mare, to Isabelle Jessie, youngest daughter of the late Archibald Sinclair, formerly of Glen Mohr, Argyleshire".

I also have a penciled family tree that goes back to Archibald Sinclair and Jean McDonald.

But somehow the lieutenant became a captain. And do these place names - likely mis-spelled - approximate any place names that you know of?

A search on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk. brings up the marriage document for 08 Jul 1798, Stirling, Stirling. Its one line reads: "Archibald Sinclair serj't 79th Reg of foot & Jean McDonad". On the same page are many more military marriages. Possibly there was an army post there.

kind regards,
Adair

When men enlisted they should be single, if after signing up they wished to marry they had to have permission from the commanding officer.Thereafter the women were 'on the strength' of the regiment. It was common for wives to travel with the regiment, they worked helping the sick and wounded, and as servants to the officers, in fact there was often a ballot to select which wives would get to go.
This Friday I went in to NAS here in Edinburgh and discovered some sad news about Lieut.Sinclair, he had some misfortunes and had debts, he applied for a Decreet Cessio Bonorum, against his creditors. This is a remnant of Roman Law used in both Scots and French law to avoid the shame of prison, where you put your assets up in lieu of the debts. I am not allowed to post these copyrighted photocopies. I also visited the TNA at Kew and have a photocopy of his handwritten request to stand down from his post and return to the retired list.He writes of his general fatigue and past injuries in a fine hand, from Kilchoan Argyll, best wishes Mo

John, William, Margaret, Jean and Euphemia, your Archibald's siblings, came out to Australia on the 'Palmyra' and settled in South Australia and Victoria. I'm a descendant of John.
Haven't been able to find anything concrete about Jean's parentage but think she was born in St Ninian's, Stirling to Charles McDonald and Janet Galloway on 2nd June 1776. I think I found this in Scottish birth deaths and marriages. There is a book being written about the descendants of the Australian connections.
There have been a couple of photo posts, on this thread, which are the headstones of Archibald and Jean, and Donald, which were found in Kilmelford.
Hi.
It's amazing to find this information about Archibald Sinclair who was my ancestor as well. I'm descended from his second son, also Archibald, who was, according to the diary, born on the Alligator Transport - a troopship of the Royal Navy. Surprising that his mother, Jean McDonald (Sinclair) would have been on the troopship. Their first son Phillip who was born 1798. Perhaps he had died by 1801 when the birth took place on the ship. I didn't realize wives accompanied soldiers on tour. There is an anecdote in the diary of her in Egypt. How did she travel and have 9 children?? The children were all born in different places too.

I was trying to find Jean McDonald's parents, using scotlandspeople.gov.uk. It shows 17 Jean McDonalds born in Scotland between 1777 and 1779. Scotland seemed very good at registering births using both parents first and last names. But there were no hints amongst the 17 births. Where would she have met Archibald? Their first child was born in Inverness the year they were married. And their 3rd, Margarate, was also born in Inverness. Might Jean have come from Inverness. I assume it was a port for the navy?

So many questions.

Archibald the younger made his way to London - the Kent end. He married a Scot there in 1829 and had 2 daughters. On my great-grand mother's birth register it shows his occupation as black smith.

Love to hear more. Maybe someone will find that family bible!
Adair

I am looking for cousins connected to Jacob Sinclair above. When he was a widower (first wife was Mary Margaret Jane Harness d. 1846 in Washington, AR), he married Phalby Clary Daily 17 Nov. 1850 (2nd marriage)who was a widow in living just down the road and their combined families moved on to Texas. My G-Grandmother was born 1861 in Smith County, TX to this union and her name was Sally Sinclair Greer. Jacob had about 13 children total. I believe only 10 to 12 lived to adulthood. Out of them, I have four sons, two from each marriage.

Looking forward to corresponding with Sinclair cousins for more research. Sally Sinclair Greer's son, B William, was my biological grandfather.

Thanks!

Your best bet is to see if you can find the family on the 1911 census in Norfolk. That should confirm if William was indeed from Shetland. It would also be worth checking the 1901 census in Norfolk to confirm that they had moved to England by then, and cross check the birth location & date with the 1911 census.

The next step backwards would be to check out Scotlands People - this has digitised copies of all the census records, and birth, marriage, deaths in Scotland. Its pay per view unless you visit in person (its in Edinburgh).

The other option once you've got a bit further back on your paper trail is to try a DNA test. The Sinclair / St Clair project is looking for more UK participants.

http://www.stclairresearch.com/

Tests are done with FamilyTreeDNA
http://www.familytreedna.com/

Stewpapa, did the estate papers name any other children? I have brothers Keziah and John B., and also sisters Diana, Hettie, and Nancy. John B. Sinclair was in Civil War also, and is buried in Adams Cemetery, Panola County. If we can share info, I'd appreciate you emailing me at:
circler50@yahoo.com
Thanks,
Hugh
