My paternal grandmothers name was Verlie Sinks whose parents are William Sinks and Sallie Hughes Sinks. They are from Palmyra, Tn. near Ft Campbell, Ky. My father Fred W Gailor Was born I think in Brownsville, Tn. I have been trying to get the Cherokee connection here.Verlie was in a school in Nashville in 1907 age 14. I am close too. Maybe IF these are conecting families we can work together. My name is Kim Gailor Lakey

John Emanuel Sinkes

John Emanuel Sinkes was my 3rd great grandfather. He was born February 28, 1828 and died on December 18, 1892. He was first married to Hannah B. Bradley (b.3/21/1824, d. 4/8/1857). They had three children: Mary Rice Sinkes, Sealy Jane Sinkes, and William Daniel Sinkes. Following Hannah's death, John married Nancy A. Roales.

I'd really like to find John Emanuel's parents. Information on Hannah B. Bradley would also be appreciated. My grandfather seemed to think that the Sinkes family came from Scotland or Sweden.

Re: Henry, Arthur, George, Jesse Sinks

After much research, I can say that Henry Samuel Sinks and Arthur Byrd Sinks are brothers.
Coincidence #1: Henry Samuel Sinks married Alice "Allie" Holmes and Arthur Byrd Sinks married Oma Holmes (both Oma and Alice are sisters). The Sinks migrated from Arlington, KY to Charleston, Mississippi County, MO (some went to Poplar Bluff, MO and others went toward St. Louis, MO)
Coincidence #2: Henry Samuel Sinks' death certificate list his parents as Henry Samuel Sinks and Katherin Bremen; Katherin Breman first married Henry Samuel Sinks and then married Henry Jones (this is found on the 1880 census showing Henry Jones/Caty Jones/Arthur Jones and Samuel Jones (which should be Sinks). Note: Katherin Bremen's full name is Mary Kathleen Bremen (or Brannon). The next census (1900) shows Mary K. Jones with Samuel Sinks and her three Jones' children (Sallie/Edward/Thomas). Both census are in Arlington, KY. (Note: Mary K. Jones/Kate Jones, etc.-along with Henry Samuel Sinks and Alice Holmes then according to 1910, 1920 and 1930 went first to Charleston, MO and then to Popular Bluff, MO).
Coincidence #3: On Mary Kathleen Jones' death certificate, it listed the informant as Arthur Sinks. My great-grandfather Arthur Sinks died sometime after his mother (Mary K. Jones) died. It showed on the death certificate that he was now also living in Popular Bluff, MO and then eventually ended up back in St. Louis, MO.

Still the question is-who are Henry Samuel Sinks Sr.'s parents. One problem is the various census with Henry Samuel Sinks and Arthur Byrd Sinks show that their father (now known as Henry Samuel Sinks) was born in either Illinois, Missouri, or Kentucky. (The various census do not agree with each other). Some of this may have been that the two brothers did not know their father very well or have any specific information about him. Hopefully some of the answer will be found.

I am from the Arthur Byrd Sinks side (who is my great grandfather).

In researching on the Missouri SOS site, if you look for Mary K. Jones; you will find the informant as Arthur Sinks (this is from Popular Bluff, Butler County, Missouri).

My guess is that Henry Samuel Sinks (whose parents via the death certificate show Henry S. Sinks and Kathren Brenen) is the brother of Arthur Byrd Sinks. It looks like from various census' that Kathren Brenen is known as Mary Katherine Brenen-married to Henry S. Sinks and then to a Henry Jones. I see possibly two children (Henry Samuel and Arthur Byrd) with Henry S. Sinks and possibly three other children with Henry Jones. I saw census' from Kentucky and from Missouri.

Most of the census show that both Henry Samuel and Arthur Byrd were born in Kentucky (probably Arlington, Carlisle, KY) and that their father was born in Illinois and mother was born in Missouri.

I am trying to go further past Henry S. Sinks (his parents and so on).
Greetings,

I am not a relative, but am trying to find out where the "Powell Sinks Grocery" was located around 1861 ish for historical research purposes. I have a Provost Marshal record some of you may enjoy reading. The "Island #2" is helpful, possibly, in that there are numbered islands here near the confluence of the MS and MO Rivers. Someone ratted out Mr. Sinks as being a secessionist...and that is the focus of the research...If you want to email me at pcwink@yahoo.com and I will be glad to share this. There also is a Sinks Road in this area, but I believe it is named after the many sinkholes and not the family.

If anyone has any records regarding a grocery, I would sure appreciate any information.

-Cindy Winkler

I wonder who this Mary Hall is in the 1860 census Wayne Co, IL:

Name: Mary Hall
Age in 1860: 42
Birth Year: abt 1818
Birthplace: Illinois
Home in 1860: Township 2 S Range 8 E, Wayne, Illinois
Gender: Female
Post Office: Fairfield
Value of real estate: View image
Household Members: Name Age
Hannah Hall 68
Mary Hall 42
George Hall 22
Fanny Hall

David Hall is also listed in this census with his wife Mary A. Hall and in this same census is James and Mary Hall Sinks. SO I think it can be confusing and maybe the Mary in the Cincinnati Cemetery, Berry Twp., Wayne Co., IL. is not Mary Hall Sinks but one of the other Marys.
My husband descends from Powell Sinks born 1793 VA, through his son Peter Sinks, born 1855 IL

I have not heard of any native American connection to the Sinks family but it is certainly possible. I have heard that the Hart family that Peter Sinks and some of his brothers married into may have had Indian roots.

Sarah Atteberry is my great-great-Aunt because she married my Great-Great-Uncle Richard Thomason and she related to me because she is Sena's sister. Sena Sinks is my great-grandmother.
I'm also related to the Atteberrys on another side of my family. My great-grandmother was an Atteberry her family came from Ky. Cassandra Jarboe and James William Martin Atteberry were her parents.
Maybe David worked to help feed the family.

I was wondering about the info from the 1870 census.
Would Mary Ann (Polly) be trying to keep up a farm with
the help of her female daughters Ellen age 12 and Elizabeth
age 17? I can't figure out David working nearby at the
Hill farm and living there.
Perhaps she did go a bit crazy because her husband was
killed in the Civil War and she was 54 at the time of
the census and struggling to keep up the family farm.
P.S. Are you related to the Sinks or the Atteberrys?
Yes Sena and George were my great-grandparents. I don't know anything about her name. I don't know where she's buried. We think George is buried in the Essex Cemetery in Mo but not real sure of that. We know that they lived in Wayne, Il until at least 1895 but then moved to Stoddard Co, Mo but we don't know if Sena lived long enough to go with George to Mo. So not sure if she is buried in Il or Mo. He married Mary C. Corgan in 1899 in Mo. I think Sena is buried in Mo because it seems he wouldn't be traveling with two small children without her.
Maybe he had help many of the Thomason families moved to Mo so did David Sinks he was there by 1880.
From the Atteberrys, Mary Ann did go by the name
of Polly.
Mary Ann's parents I think are David Hall b.1779
Georgia and Hannah Phillips b.1792 North Carolina.
They were married in Maury County, Tenn. Jan.
17 1810. I confirmed that with records from
Maury County. Their first born was Richard and
he was b. 1811. They moved to Ilinois between
1811-1816 and Mary Ann was born April 29, 1816.
Are you a descendant of Sena Sinks? I am curious
about the name Sena.
Eddy I believe is Ellen from the 1860 census. Mary is listed as Polly in the 1860 census.
It's hard to go on census where their from because each census taker will put down a different state. If one is from person is from TN he might mark everyone from TN.
The 1870 has many mistakes in it.
In the 1870 census there is also a David Hall right age for being Mary's brother.
James was in Wayne Co in 1855/1865 census for Wayne, Co. Il
Can't find James in the 1850 census.

My reason I believe that Elizabeth is Sylvia's daughter is because she is living with her in 1850 and her other daughter Louisa is living with Nancy Lowry and Louisa I'm sure is her daughter. Syliva may have been married to a Sinks we know nothing about.
And then there's Zachariah Sinks/Mary Reed. He's one of the older Sinks.
I sometimes think Powell goes by Peter.
When trying to place where they come from it's hard because in each census it will be a different place.
James was in Wayne County. I can find him in 1860 with Mary (but she is listed as Polly which was a nickname for Mary) and their children Ceina (Sena?), Davis, Sally, Elizabeth and Ellen. James is in the Illinois State census in 1855 and 1865 (Wayne County.) In 1870 Davis/David is living with the Hill family as a farm hand and Mary is nearby (listed as Jinks but it should be Sinks. Here you are right - the information is messed up - the wronng age, birhtplace etc adn yet I think this may somehow still be the same family. Note she is listed as insane - she may have given bad answers or the census takers got it wrong. The ages of the kids are inconsistent with other census records. Again, I wouldn't rule this one out, I just think there were errors. Also I don't think Eddie was a boy. That child is listed as a female - so I wonder if it could be Ellie/Ellen and they again, just got it wrong.

There is a marriage record for James Sinks and Mrs. Mary Attebury. I think it is "orderable" from the IL archives.

That's what I have. Hard to follow.....

The Sinks family is hard to follow - really challenging. The used the same names over and over which makes it hard to follow AND in teh case of Powell Sinks, he HAD to have had more than one family going at a time which obviously makes it challenging! I have not linked Sylvia and Powell, but wouldn't rule anything out.

The first wife of Powell (born VA 1793) that i know of is Elizabeth Lyle Sinks. Two things that support this marriage in the biography of their son, George W Sinks, in the 1883 History of Henry County Missouri, National Historical Co pg 687 (names are stated in it) and also the dicorce records of Powell & Elizabeth Sinks in Jefferson Co. Ill. Further support to connect them is the 1840 and 1850 census in Jasper Ill. In 1840 Powell is listed as head of household and in 1850 Elizabeth is listed with her three children William, George W and Harriet. William was born in TN and the other two in IL. The neighbors match up in both censuses and the divorce record (Powell committed adultery)lines up in the timeline. The George in the biography is this George. SO we know that Elizabeth and Powell were the parents together of William - who I can't trace after this census, George - who went on to be quite documented, and Harriet who we know married Elisha Lowry on 23 march 1856 in Jefferson IL. Harriet is no longer listed as Elisha's wifein the 1880 census so I assume she passed away between 1870-1880.

I know Powell and Elizabeth had more children because the 1840 census lists another girl 10-20 years old and several boys but they are all out of the household by 1850 so it's hard to figure out who they were. I figured teh extra girl must be wither Julia Ann Sinks, who married David Lowry, or Elizabeth Sinks who married William Lowry, or Nancy Sinks who married Alexander Lowry.

I beleive other have placed Nancy as the daughter of Powell because she named a son Powell, but I'm not convinced she is his daughter. Elizabeth does live near them int eh 1850 census but I think the proximity MAY have been more of a Lowry thing than a Sinks thing. Her two daughters married Lowry's so it makes sense she would be near Lowry's in general. Nancy and Alexander also had a son named Zachariah.

I don't think the Elizabeth who married William is the daughter or Powell and Elizabeth because Sylvia was living with her. I assumed Sylvia was Elizabeth's mother.

I think Julia Ann, who married David Lowry maked the most sense to me right now as the daughter of Powell & Elizabeth . She is the right age and she seems to shadow the known siblings and Elizabeth in various census records. In 1860 Julia and Davis are right next to George and Mildred Sinks. In 1870 David and Julia are in Kansas.. Goerge and Mildred moved from Kansas in 1868 so they lived there for a while and it's possible they went there together.

Although I think Julia is the storngest possibility I wouldn't rule ANYTHING out. They could ALL be Powell's children with various wives/women.

Obviously the divorce record shows he committed adultery and Elizabeth kicked him out. He also had a relationship/marriage with a Mary Story, and his son Peter and several of Peter's brothers list Mary as their mother on their wedding records. Two of the brothers who indicate Mary Story was thier mother were born after the date that Powell married Louisa Mc Coy in 1857. It seems like Powell had Mary in one household and Louisa in another??

It has been hard finding Powell in records. I tend to think he tried to stay out of them. The best information I found on him is the 1870 census in Missouri - he is with Louisa and children of Mary and Louisa are in the household.

Very interesting. I'm going to have to take another look at Sylvia - maybe she fits in where I wasn't expecting to see her. Crazy!
There are several facts that aren't matching up.
Mary Hall Atteberry was born in Illinois not Tenn.
She was born in 1816.
She died on 4 April 1869 and I haven't heard of
a child named Eddy or Edward. The Atteberrys
think that she married a James Sinks b. about 1825
in Ill.at Gallatin, Ill. on Feb. 7, 1851 source Familysearch.org.
I haven't found any info about James and Mary
in Gallatin, Ill. after the marriage.
Did James Sinks live near the Atteberrys around
1848-50 in Wayne County, Il. probably Elm River Twp.?
Thanks.

Sylvia may have been married to Zachariah it's hard to figure out between Powell and Zachariah. I think I figured Powell because one of daughters named their son Powell.
Sena I am sure belongs to Mary and James Sinks. Can't find her with any of the other Sinks. I ordered Grant Thomason's marriage record and there was Sena on the marriage cert. as a witness. I also have a copy of George and Sena's marriage but no parents on there but they were married in the home of Sarah and Richard Thomason.
I have Sylvia living with Elizabeth (Sinks) Lowery 1850. Nancy Sinks Lowery living next door and Louisa Sinks living with Nancy.
In 1860 Sylvia is living with Louisa Sinks and hubby James Rayburn....
I have her in 1870 living with Louisa Sinks Rayburn. I believe all these girls are her daughters.
I also believe Frederick Davis is her father he lived to be 93 and is living with Louisa Sinks in 1870.
I have known for awhile that somehow the Davis family was connected to the Thomason and Sinks and I think this is how their connected.
That's my feelings about this family. Don't know if I'm right.

I did find her in the 1870 census. Here is what I have for the 1870 census:
Mary Jinks
[Sinks]
Birth Year: abt 1822
Age in 1870: 48
Birthplace: Tennessee
Home in 1870: Four Mile, Wayne, Illinois
Race: White
Gender: Female
Value of real estate: View image
Post Office: Long Prairie
Household Members: Name Age
Mary Jinks 48
Lena Jinks 16
Eddie Jinks 12

David is not far away working for Hill family. Sarah is just one page over from Mary and kids. Looking at the Lena on the page it does look like an S instead of an L. Can't find Elizabeth she may have married by that time. I know the last name if spelled wrong but I believe this is them.

James Sinks
Side: Union
Regiment State/Origin: Illinois
Regiment Name: 62 Illinois Infantry
Regiment Name Expanded: 62nd Regiment, Illinois Infantry
Company: G
Rank In: Private
Rank In Expanded: Private
Rank Out: Private

Name: James Sinks; James Siaks
State Filed: Kentucky
Widow: Mary Sinks
Minor: Davis Sinks

David did this pension thing after he moved to Ky. 1921.

Maybe there are two Mary Halls I thought I found another one before. It doesn't seem she would be buried under Hall and not Sinks.
My guess is that Mary was the Indian in the family.
Sarah also has a daughter named Sena. So does David.

I think Sylvia Sinks was married to Zachariah Sinks, not Powell (atleast the Powell that was born in the 1793 in VA). I have yet to figure out how exactly Zachariah & Powell were related. Some people have attributed Sena Sinks to Powell, but I think she is James & Mary's daughter, or so it appears from the records available.

Hi---
Thanks for your reply. Sarah Ann (Atteberry)
B. Jan. 27 1847 in Wayne was the last of the
6 children of John Warren and Mary Ann Atteberry.
Sarah Ann was the only children that remained with
Mary Ann after her divorce from John Warren.
Mary Ann died in 1869 so that is why you can't
find any more info about her after that.
Do you think that the Indian part of your heritage
comes from the Sinks side of the family or from
Mary Ann's family?
I don't understand why Mary Ann was buried under
the name of Hall.
I live in Idaho so I am not close to Illinois
to research info. The Fairfield Public Library
in Wayne County (618)842-4516 gave me some info
about the Halls and Atteberry families.
Did James Sinks fight for the Confederacy or for
the Union?
I wonder who cared for Elisabeth b. 1853 and Ellen
b.1857 Sinks after their father died in 1865 and then
their mother in 1869.

James Sinks is from TN on the census of 1860.
I find Mary Sinks in the census until 1870 then I can't find her. Their son David Sinks later appled for war pension from James Sinks.
My grandfather and his sons all said Sena was Indian. I still have one living aunt and she says the same thing. My uncles and my Dad all looked Indian. I really don't know for sure. All families seem to think they have Indian.
I believe Mary is Sarah Atteberry's mother also and that Sarah and Sena are half sisters.
I think James Mom and Dad are Syliva (Davis) and Powell Sinks. There are lots of reason's why I think that but to long to put on here. James Sinks did live in Wayne Co. The Sinks, Thomason and Lowery families were all close. At one time I think they all lived in TN.
Would be glad to share any information I have. I can't tell you for sure it is all right.

Living above them are Alexander Lowery and wife Nancy and I believe Nancy is a SINKS.
To all researchers of Powell Sinks:

I ordered the divorce records for Powell Sinks and Elizabeth Lyle and they were not able to locate them, but did send some court records, "continuances" refering to the case of the people vs Powell Sinks. He was charged with adultery, which is no surprise since it is more than evident that he was with more than one woman at a time, and more than once.

I was hoping for more info but thought I'd pass this little bit on.
Re: Louisa Sinks./Lowery family

Hi

I'll go back and look in my notes for Louisa. Awhile ago I spent some time looking at these Sinks - Lowery marriages trying to figure out who may have belonged to Powell Sinks and his wife Elizabeth Lyle Sinks. She was his first or second wife and he went on to marry or be otherwise involved with two other women, Mary Story and Louisa McCoy.

I know Powell and Elizabeth had at least three children: William, George and Harriett. William appears on the 1850 census with his mother and then I lose him. George married Mildred Lambert and is fairly well documented. Harriett married Elisha Lowery.

There were obviously more children born to Powell and Elizabeth, and they were probably born in Tennesee. The 1840 census lists another girl 10-20 years and several boys but clearly they moved out/ were married off before 1850 and therefore are not listed in their mother’s household. I believe additional children MAY include:

Julia Ann Sinks who married David Lowery

Elizabeth Sinks who married William Lowery - but I think she is probably more likely the daughter of Zachariah & Sylvia Sinks.

Nancy Sinks (yes, she is definitely a Sinks)who married Alexander Lowery (they had a son they named Powell but that doesn't necesaarily mean the older Powell is Nancy's father) but I have seen other researchers place her with Zachariah & Sylvia Sinks.

Let me see what I have on Louisa, born abt 1841 - I think she is probably Zachariah's daughter.

Does anyone know who Louisa Sinks belonged to. I find her in Jefferson Co, Ill 1850 at the age of 9 living with the Alexander Lowery family. I believe she may have married James Thomason but have not been able to prove it. I see many of the Sinks women married Lowery men. So I kind of think Nancy Lowery, Alexander's wife may be a Sinks also.

There is a Cora Sinks Marriage in Stoddard Co. to J.J. Hillman as family and gives consent as she has no parents or Gdn. : Married at Bloomfield.)

I don't know if Mary Sinks may be Cora's sister. Or if this Cora is the same Cora with James and Rebecca Suddarth.

The David Sinks I have is the brother of Sena Sinks and their parents are James Sinks and Mary Hall. James died in the Civil war and Mary was listed as insane.

I found a listing of the marriage on 21 Aug 1892 Z. Sinks - Sarah Short.

I believe all the Sinks in Ill and Mo are all related but I'm not sure how.

James Sinks and Mary Hall's children were:
Sena
David
Ellen
Elizabeth
Sally

Hello, I am a descendant of Charles S. Sinks, he was my great-great grandfather. I know his parents were Abraham Sinks and Rachael DeWoody, but that's all I can find, and I would love to be able to trace the Sinks name back further. I figured that his parents must have died, since he appeared to be living with his grandparents at the age of 4, so what you say about them being killed makes sense. I know you've said you have information about Charles, but if you have any more information about Abraham, I would appreciate it very much.

James Sinks/ Mary Atteberry/Arterbury

There is a marriage between James Sinks and Mrs. Mary Arterbury. I believe Mary was once married to John Warren ATTEBERRY. One of her children with John was Sarah Atteberry and she married Richard Thomason. Sena Sinks married Richard's brother George Thomason. On the census it shows Thomason families always living close to Sinks. James Sinks I believed died in the Civil War.
My aunt also told me that Sena was Indian.
